DID THEY OR DIDN'T THEY?..........2003-01-22

This is a beautifully and lavishly illustrated, textually rich book. Its glossy pages demand the reader's undivided attention and are sure to enthrall all mystery lovers, Everest aficionados, nostalgia junkies, history buffs, and climbing enthusiasts. This book is sure to provide the reader with many hours of enjoyment.

The book chronicles the search for George Mallory and Andrew Irvine by the 1999 Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition. It juxtaposes the dramatic turn of events during their expedition with those of the 1924 British Everest Expedition which saw Mallory and Irvine attempt a summit climb, only to disappear into the mists of Everest, never to be seen again. It makes for a spell binding narrative, as past events are woven through present day ones.

The 1999 Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition was a meticulously well-prepared and well-organized venture. With its discovery of George Leigh Mallory's body, it enjoyed much success. The research and analysis that went into its ultimate, well thought out conclusions were comprehensive and fascinating, with its strong reliance upon forensics and deductive reasoning. Their reconstruction of Mallory's and Irvine's last climb is riveting. Unfortunately, the ultimate question still remains unanswered. Did they or did they not reach the summit of Mount Everest back in 1924?

The beautiful photographs of the personal effects found upon Mallory's person underscore a certain poignancy about the discovery of Mallory's well preserved body. The photographs, which memorialize this discovery, are amazingly lovely and tasteful, considering its subject matter, and hauntingly illustrate the finality with which Everest may deal with mountaineers, no matter how accomplished.

The photographs also highlight how ill equipped for the harsh climatic conditions were the early Everest expeditions. It is amazing, and a credit to those early expeditioners' courage and fortitude, in braving such an inhospitable and harsh terrain with the inadequate clothing and equipment available to them at the time. Mallory and Irvine were certainly intrepid explorers!

This book is sure to provide the reader with many hours of enjoyment. Its Spanish translation will ensure that speakers of Spanish will also be able to enjoy it, as well.

This book is a fitting tribute to two men who sought to make a historic summit and, in their attempt, would forever be a part of Everest.

The official history of the Later Han dynasty (AD 25-220) contains eight so-called Treatises, traditionally regarded as accurate descriptions of the dynasty's institutions. Practically all literature dealing with the bureaucratic system, the geography, the religious beliefs or the calendar of the first two centuries AD is based on these Treatises, even though their value as source material has never been critically examined. This study subjects each of the Treatises in turn to a detailed scrutiny. If you had to summarize Fail-Safe Investing in three words, it would probably be these: Embrace the obvious. Look at your job, Browne advises. You get ahead because of your experience, education, and common sense. Your job is the reason you have money to invest in the first place. So the first of Browne's 17 rules is, "Build Your Wealth upon Your Career." Don't jeopardize your career; it's going to take many years of smart investing before your earnings will surpass what you earn at your day job--if they ever do.

The other rules aren't quite as obvious, but equally simple. Browne explains the difference between investing (making a long-term plan and sticking with it) and speculating (betting that you can beat the overall market during a specific period). He shows how life savings are easily lost when you borrow money to invest rather than investing only the money you already have. Browne also suggests a portfolio that he says is the simplest and safest possible for continual, steady returns above inflation: an equal division among stocks, bonds, gold, and cash. That covers an investor in times of prosperity (stocks), inflation (gold), deflation (bonds), and recession (cash). While many investment analysts would undoubtedly gag if you presented them with a portfolio that consisted of a 50 percent investment in gold and cash, Browne nonetheless makes a compelling argument that such an allocation makes it easier to sleep at night. Every book written by Harry Browne is worthwhile, and this is no exception.

'Fail-Safe Investing: Lifelong Financial Security in 30 Minutes' should be required reading for anyone considering investing their funds with 'hot' fund managers, 'winning' advisory services or 'can't miss' trading systems. It also lays out a solid, common sense foundation for lifelong fiscal responsibility and profitability, and should be required reading for all high school students.
Harry passed away last year at the age of 73, and he will be dearly missed by those of us who treasure his legacy of liberty, independent thinking and personal responsibility. His life was a one of a kind gift that God blessed our world with.

I learned some good, basic investing advice. I will be a lot more skeptical about supposed new ways to make money in the market. The plan is conservative but rightfully so considering the U.S. banking system and the U.S. dollar are based on fraud. The book gives explicit advice on how to execute the proposed plan.

The value of this book is in the nuggets of wisdom it contains. He stresses the importance of diversifying and not trying to predict the future. As other reviewers have noted, his strategy is to put your assets into 4 categories, each of which can do well during a particular econonmic climate. Whether or not you buy into this strategy doesn't really affect the enjoyment of this book, as his real purpose here is to debunk myths and impart general wisdom. It's a short book, 150 pages or so, and can be read very quickly. I think the other reviewer who looked at 1993-2002 and concluded that Browne's ideas are way off misses the point. Browne's ideas are intended to work over a lifetime of investing, not a mere decade. Browne would likely argue that any one investment class can do well for a decade, but not your whole lifetime.

Why I thought this was a good book.......2005-10-11

If you follow his advice, you won't get rich. However, you will protect the purchasing power of your savings, no matter what happens to the markets. This book is for the person who wants to invest his/her money in such a way that you can simply leave it in those investments - with occasional adjustments when one part or another becomes too large a part of your portfolio - and then turn your energies to more interesting or useful pursuits. You essentially become independent of all the investment hullabaloo and can put all your concentration on your collection of cigar rings, or whatever suits your fancy. I agree with H L Mencken who said that the value of money is greatly overrated (with my addendum - as long as you don't have to worry about it).

The book had wonderfully simple, step by step directions on how to raise a lot of money through events, including how to create a budget, how to recruit participants,and how to make your cause compelling. The information in the book could apply to almost any event. Very practical, yet powerful information. I would recommend it without reservation to anyone interested in raising a lot of money...from a small school to a large nonprofit.

This book is a collection of essays that explores the dark side of Jim Morrison. It is good for its essays which provide details and a plausable theroy of Jim's death as investigated by Albert Goldman. It is also fun to read due to other accounts of his life as told by lesser known writers and girlfriends such as Nico.
