An excellent beginner's guide.......2000-02-25
This book's wonderful clear, color photos make this book an excellent guide for beginners or casual wildflower observers.
Book Description
Before the Civil War, southern planters were among the wealthiest people in America. Many plantation owners lived extravagantly and fashioned their surroundings lavishly. Those grand and graceful homes now remain as tributes to the planters and the slaves who helped build these homes. The histories of 34 of Louisianas plantation homes are described here. Arrigo highlights the homes’ architecture and traces their restorations, some of which continue today; his vignettes illustrate some o the unusually details in the homes. He also relates the histories of the homes’ owners and their illustrious and infamous visitors and gives us hints of the home’s curious legends (including some ghost stories!)
Customer Reviews:
LOUISIANA.......2007-02-04
Louisiana is blessed with some of the most beautiful plantation homes in the South. This book gives insightful text and vivid images. Pre Civil War Louisiana was full of these sugar cane plantations on the Mississippi. It's nothing short of amazing how many survived considering how neglected they were for a century. It's a tribute to the slave labor that built them, the white artisans that designed them and the cypress wood that was used to craft them. Highly Recommended.
The Majestic and the Mysterious.......2000-03-29
This beautifully written and illustrated book renewed my interest in the history and beauty of the plantations on river road. I have lived in the New Orleans area my entire life and until I read this book I had no interest in visiting the homes. Now I do! This book invoked the history and mystery of these majestic homes. If you can't visit these homes in person, buy this book, and it will be as if you had.

CONSENSUS BY DIKTAT AND THE POLITICS OF PERVERSION.......2004-03-26
These are the author's own phrases characterising Blair's premiership, so first a word about who he is. Leo Abse, now in his late 80's, is a retired Labour member of parliament from the mining community of South Wales. He is the author of a similar study of Margaret Thatcher, but what I had mainly remembered about him was the story of a meeting he addressed in his own locality at which the chairman referred to him as `Mr Abs'. His surname has two syllables, so he murmured in the man's ear `Call me Abs-ey', to which the chairman replied `That's very nice of you, call me Jonesy'.
He has a fine sense of humour himself, and some of the cattier sideswipes at various figures in this book are very entertaining. This is a study from a psychoanalytic viewpoint, and it takes in not just The People's Tony himself but his wife, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, the fearsome former Downing Street media supremo Alistair Campbell, Blair's political Svengali Peter Mandelson and certain others. The book originally appeared in 1996 before Blair came to power under the title Tony Blair: the Man Behind the Smile, with updated editions in 2001 and 2003. The problem for me with a psychoanalytic account is that I do not have enough knowledge of the technique to form an independent judgment of my own. Abse's approach is distinctly partisan and hostile, as his phrases that I have used in my caption to this review make very clear. It is all easy enough to understand, it is coherent, systematic and seemingly well-researched (sources are listed at the back) but there is no question that this is a full-scale frontal attack on Blair as a politician. An analysis using this technique belittles its subject, as this book is manifestly intended to do, and ordinary detachment and fairness suggests that there must be at least some temptation, for someone fluent in the terminology, to use it to promote a point of view rather than carry out a genuinely objective enquiry.
Abse is `old Labour' as he says himself, and he draws his inspiration from the post-war Labour government whose socialising approach he believed Blair could have emulated. Among more recent Labour figures he singles out the late leader John Smith. I had the honour of knowing John personally long before Abse did, and all I can say is that if he really was the conflict-unaverse full-blooded socialist that Abse depicts he must have changed a good deal since I used to know him. Whether Abse is precisely `left-wing' is questionable, and he is manifestly unimpressed by certain recidivist trade union leaders of the kind who made the trade union movement as deeply disliked as it became in the 1960's and 1970's. He is basically a fair-minded and decent-minded socialist who believes that Blair and his motley outfit of modernisers have, in his own words, stolen the soul of his party. He recognises explicitly that the kind of social legislation he aspires to is not going to be achieved without conflict. However as he sees fit to characterise Gordon Brown as being willing to face up to anyone except himself (Brown, that is), I suppose I can legitimately question whether Abse in his turn is really facing up to the sort of obstacles his own preferred policies confront in this day and age. This is a book review, not any kind of political statement of my own. What I would have wanted from Abse is his own honest answer to the question `Given that Britain is a member of the European Union, and given even more the extent to which governments are in the hands of international capital, do you think you will achieve anything except disaster by taking on hopeless odds?' If the political will is there, anything might indeed be possible. Can he honestly claim to detect it at this stage of the world's history?
There are real touches of brilliance in this book and it is in the main well-written, so much so that I shall ask - can there really be such a word as `aggressivity'? There wouldn't be if I had anything to do with it. There is categorically no such word as `wreaked', the word is `wrought'; it is a solecism to use `proportions' to mean dimensions; and does he mean `atactic' or `ataxic'? I enjoyed the book thoroughly. The sincere sense of disappointment that comes through it is shared from various political standpoints, not least from the prevalent view that we have no visible alternative government.

A unique view of the nineteenth-century American West.......2003-06-12
The collaborative effort of Michael J. Gillis and Michael F. Maglian, John Bidwell And California: The Life And Writings Of A Pioneer 1841-1900 is an informative biography that draws upon pioneer John Bidwell's own writings about the time he lived in (which included the Gold Rush years), the history of the state of California, and a great deal more. Occasional black-and-white illustrations enhance this scholarly account, offering a unique view of the nineteenth-century American West through the eyes of a man who called it home. John Bidwell And California is a welcome and valued addition to Western American Frontier Studies reading lists in general and California History reference collections in particular.

Book Description
The Gold Book came into being in response to our customer's most frequently asked questions regarding gold bullion coins.
It is a comprehensive, authoritative gold guide for professional and novice alike. It follows a systematic, easy to follow format in its description of more than 100 popular gold issues. Life-sized pictures of both the obverse and reverse of most coins appear on the outer edges of each page to assist readers in quickly identifying a particular gold bullion piece.
Included in the specifications of each coin are the following: Total Weight, Purity, Gold Content, Fineness, Diameter, Thickness, Edge, Mint, Strike, whether or not the piece is Legal Tender, the Mintage Period, and the Designer (when available). There are also descriptions of the designs which appear on the obverse and the reverse of each piece.
Six appendicies appear in the back of the book. They list the coins included in the book in a variety of ways. For instance, one appendix lists the coins by diameter and thickness which is very helpful to jewelers who make coin jewelry. Another lists the coins by purity. A third by gold content which is very useful for those wanting to compare the gold content of one coin with that of another. A fourth lists the coins by total weight. The others list the coins by country. The Gold Book is intended for use by appraisers, attorneys, bankers, coin dealers, investors, jewelers and anyone else buying, selling, appraising, inheriting, or accepting gold as collateral. It answers many common questions about gold coins and bars.

Treat Your Own Back.......2007-09-30
This has been one of the most helpful books I have ever read. I have suffered with low back pain for several years and have been treated by several pain specialists. The exercises and information in this book have made a great difference. What a relief. I would recommend this book to anyone who suffers from lower back pain.
Too much to read for the content.......2007-09-08
The method described can be covered in 2 pages. It just takes forever to get to the point.
The method/ back exercise worked for me to some extent in the first week. Not a lasting solution.
This was not an expensive book so I did not feel that bad about buying it.

treat your own back by mckenzie.......2007-08-30
I tried this method and also in physical therapy. My back continued to hurt and as a result of the push-ups in the program, I got carpel tunnel in my hands. I dropped out of physical therapy because they couldn't help me and then I had two problems to deal with. I would recommend Healing Back Pain by John Sarno, M.D.
Painful.......2007-08-29
I tried this approach with a therapist and it was very painful. Basically it involves some use of extension positions like cobra. I stopped doing it after a few weeks of increasing pain and now after a period of rest my back is getting better.

Product Description
"Low back pain which affects nearly every one of us at some stage of our active adult life, is one of the most common ailments afficting mankind. It is described in many ways such as fibrositis, slipped disc, lumbago, arthritis in the back, rheumatism; or, when it causes pain extending into the leg, sciatica. To most people low back pain remains a mystery. It often starts without warning and for no obvious reason; it interferes with simple activities of living, moving about and getting a comfortable night's sleep; and then, just as unexpectedly, the pain subsides. When in acute pain we are usually unable to think clearly about our trouble and simply seek relief from the pain. On the other hand, as soon as we have recovered from an acute episode, most of us quickly forget our low back problems. Once we have developed recurrent low back pain, we cannot do anything else but seek assistance, time and again, to become painfree. Usually, due to a lack of knowledge and understanding, we are unable to deal with present symptoms ourselves and certainly have no way of preventing future low back problems. The causes of most kinds of low back pain are quite clear. First I will explain why low back pain may occur. Then I will suggest how you can avoid it; or, if at present you are having low back pain, how you may recover from it and prevent it from recurring. The main point of this book is that the management of your back is your responsibility. Of course, you can call on people with particular skills---doctors, physiotherapists or chiropractors---for treatment but in the end only you can really help yourself. Selftreatment of low back pain is now widely accepted; it will be more effective in the long-term management of your low back problems than any other form of treatment. Many publications set out to tell you how to look after your own back and you may well wonder why yet another one is now offered. The reason is that this is the first book to show...." In this comprehensive overview of Woody Allen's filmmaking career, Julian Fox covers each period of Allen's artistic development in detail. Particularly fascinating is Fox's account of sequences that were cut from Allen's finished films. For example, in Take the Money and Run, Allen initially intended his character to be killed in a Bonnie and Clyde-style shootout, while Annie Hall was originally conceived as a murder mystery! Also interesting is Fox's focus on the financial aspects of Allen's professional life: his earnings, the cost of his movies, and their profits or losses. A filmography and bibliography are included.

Many see the Victorian era as Britain's heyday. Certainly some of the nation's most exceptional citizens lived then, not least, of course, Queen Victoria herself. In all fields, pioneers were at work, among them Isbard Kingdom Brunel, Florence Nightingale, John Ruskin, William Morris, Sir Robert Peel, Sir John Stuart Mill, Michael Faraday, Edward Lear, and Charles Darwin.

Book Description
To Thomas Carlyle he was "not worth his weight in cold bacon," but, to Queen Victoria, Benjamin Disraeli was "the kindest Minister" she had ever had and a "dear and devoted friend." In this masterly biography by England's "outstanding popular historian" (A.N. Wilson), Christopher Hibbert reveals the personal life of one of the most fascinating men of the nineteenth century and England's most eccentric Prime Minister. A superb speaker, writer, and wit, Disraeli did not intend to be a politician. Born into a family of Jewish merchants, Disraeli was a conspicuous dandy, constantly in debt, and enjoyed many scandalous affairs until, in 1839, he married an eccentric widow twelve years older than him. As an antidote to his grief at his wife’s death in 1872, he threw himself into politics becoming Prime Minister for the second time in 1874, much to the Queen’s delight.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Author in his Dotage.......2006-10-05
As those before me have said, DONT BOTHER. It's sad that so great an author as Christopher Hibbert was allowed by his publisher to put out this book which is just a rehash of a book he wrote about Disraeli 30 years ago. Except that mostly it's with a lot of additional material that is only excerpt from letters he wrote and those written to him.
Soooo much of the book is wasted on discussions of people who meant nothing to him in his later life and seem like nothing but fill. If this was a student paper it would fail.
There is a very good short bio by Edgar Feuchtwanger, and two monstrous volumes (over 700 pages) by Robert Lord Blake, and Stanley Weintraub.
There Is No Reason to Read this Book.......2006-08-28
This is not so much a biography as an itinerary. Benjamin Disraeli went to a country house in High Bascombe-on-Boring, the seat of Lord Irrelevant Nobody, and his wife, the daughter of Viscount Who Cares? and the cousin of the mistress of the architect of another country house Disraeli visited ten years later. Oh, and he was vain and self-promoting, but gave great speeches. Or so he says, in his letters, which (as noted in the other reviews) appear to be the author's exclusive sources. We don't know what they were about, but, boy, did he ever think they were great! I don't know what the author thought, either, about Disraeli, or why he wrote such a book. What puzzles me, and what I have yet to figure out, is, who is the intended audience? Who would ever want an utterly non-political book about Benjamin Disraeli? His only interest to posterity -- which is substantial yet ignored here -- is as a politician and statesman. Everything else -- and especially his travelogue and endless fetes with foreign dignitaries --is unworthy of our attention. This is an astonishingly lazy book by a writer who apparently only wanted to add another impressive title to his bibliography. Fine. But leave us out of it.
michel wugmeister.......2006-08-10
An embarrasing and lazy pastiche of quotes from Disraeli's correspondence woven with an old fashioned snobbish viewpoint. There is no historical context and no discussion of what made Disraeli the importasnt figure he was. Disraeli comes off as a self-serving, superficial and useless fop, lusting after high-class recognition. This bojk should have been rejected in manuscript. Whatever reputation Mr. Hibbert may have had, it is vitiated by this piece of sophomoric drivel.
Tired, Superficial Work, Unquestioning of Its Own Premises, Poorly Edited.......2006-07-31
A miserably rendered biography of one of the most complex men in British history. Hibbert writes from within his comfortable, unexamined cell of "Britishness." He superficially dismisses Disraeli's Jewish upbringing with a wave of the hand, showing not a whit of insight or interest into how it may have affected Disraeli's adult behavior--his choices of dandyism, novel writing, and even his peculiarly powerful oratory. Hibbert just neatly fits Disraeli into categories he, Hibbert, pulls out of his own experience from within what's normal and usual in British life. Moreover, the book quotes huge, unedited swaths not only of Disraeli's letters and journals (somewhat defensible) but also from other recent biographers. So it reads like the work of an undergraduate. Ultimately, Hibbert is not at all inquisitive about what led this man of many and great parts to find such a singular way to live, and to succeed in what, in the book's only success, we see was a terribly hostile social environment for a Jew(populated by powerful anti-Semites like Carlyle and Dickens, Trollope, etc.). This is poorly done work.
Dizzy.......2006-07-16
Mr. Hibbert strings together quotes from letters written by Disraeli and other sources to tell a social history of this great personality of the age of Queen Victoria.
Readers seeking a political biography, or at even some basic historical context for the daily life of this politician/author, will seek in vain. Best for those wanting insights into how the rich and powerful (including the good Queen) of the time whiled away their insipid days.
The saving grace to this book is the many examples--mostly from Disraeli's pen--it provides of that era's beautiful use of the written English language.

Book Description
It was a time of industrial triumph, it was a time of empire, it was a time of social decorum and a very mighty Queen: few periods in British history could rival the Victorian age for its color and energy. That’s because so many people put their hearts and souls, their blood and sweat, their guts and determination into changing the English social landscape. Meet all the big players who administered the British Empire, as well as the artistically obsessive Edward Burne-Jones; the inventor of the sugar-processing machine (who also worked out how to mass-produce steel); the founder of the Raleigh bicycle firm; the discoverer of the electron; and the man who almost beat the Wright Brothers into the sky.
