Good for the tourist or a new resident.......2001-08-23
This guide book covers all the bases, and even includes interesting historical digests of various districts in the Los Angeles area, the high desert and the low desert. The information is organized to assist tourists on short or longer visits, includes lots of "hidden" opportunities to eat, sightsee, or shop away from the beaten path, and is even helpful for a new resident to the L.A. area, who may not be sure where to start digesting this incredible city or the landscape around it. Highly recommended.
Excellent Guide to Southern California.......2001-06-13
This guide gave me all of the information I needed to have a wonderful vacation. The information was candid, and thoughtfully presented. There were many tidbits of information/ sights I would never had thought to see if it wasn't for this book. My vacation consisted of renting a car at LAX touring along the coast (stopping at places recommended in the guide) Heading down to San Diego and then returning to LAX by traveling inland and seeing Temecula etc. It was a fun filled 10 days and all I used was this guide. If you just want the basic tourist jargon, buy a Frommers guide, not a hidden one... :-)

Book Description
From the bestselling author of Financial Peace, this companion volume to More Than Enough is a step-by-step guide to building wealth while strengthening your marriage and family.
In Financial Peace, Dave Ramsey showed readers how to get out of debt. Now he uses the same blend of down-home wisdom and straight talk to take readers to the next step: building wealth. But success means more than money--it means having a happy marriage and family. In How to Have More Than Enough, Dave Ramsey guides readers down the path to true success.
Rather than gimmicks or quick fixes, Ramsey's method for achieving financial and familial stability focuses on ten traits essential to creating prosperity, teaching children about money, living debt-free, and achieving marital bliss when it comes to finances. His easy-to-follow workbook illustrates each of these traits and allows readers to frequently assess their progress and honestly evaluate their situation. How to Have More Than Enough offers readers and their spouses the chance to work toward building wealth and strengthening their families.

exceptional book.......2006-11-03
Consumer debt has long been a problem of most americans. The writer is very explicit about those things which cause us to go into consumer debt.
One of the things he addresses is greed, not having the patience to wait
for the money in our hand to purchase items. I am a baby boomer and our generation has been known to want things microwave quick. This book addresses the dangers and pitfallsof that thinking. It will set you free from stinking thinking!
How to Have More than Enough : A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Abundance .......2006-02-25
********wonderful*******
Especially appropriate for Christian families.......2004-11-10
I very much appreciate Dave Ramsey's putting financial matters in the context of virtuous behavior. This is not just a "get out of debt" book or a "make real money" book. It is a book that reminds its readers how many of us stray from fiscal health, suckered in by the 'race to get ahead and then fall behind' values common to the vast majority of Americans - materialism, status, name brands, immediate gratification, antagonism, impermanence, gluttony, lack of responsibility, even lack of contentment. Ramsey knows all too well that when it comes to fiscal restraint and good money habits, this is not a virtuous society. He recommends solid values to counteract the mainstream of American life - patience, delayed gratification, humility, cooperation, peace, communication, contentment and, of course, paying CASH. I wholly applaud this philosophy.
But, merely as a qualifier, I do want to let the prospective reader know that Mr. Ramsey's work is not secular. Bible passages, a Christian perspective and religious messages (such as suggesting prayer and counsel with clergy) set the tone much of the way, and the book is geared (not entirely but mostly) toward traditional and fairly conventional nuclear families.
As a more daring and thorough departure from those seemingly ubiquitous American go-getter values that lure so many into dire straits (such as 'the more you buy the more you save'), I can heartily recommend the popular classic "Your Money or Your Life."
ABSOLUTE MUST READ!.......2000-10-05
This book is extremely benefial to read. Its easy reading joyfully guides you how to build a good foundation for success, personal wealth, and good family relationships. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The touching story of a deaf puppy who finds a loving home........1998-10-25
The story of Ceasar is based on a true story. It is an endearing story of a deaf puppy who is given a second chance to become someone's beloved pet, rather than being "put to sleep" as an unadoptable stray. It is shows the triumph of determination, on the part of his human companion, to train Cesear despite his handicap. The companiaon tape recording enhances the reading experience.

Book Description
Brash, iconoclastic, controversial, intelligent and "the best actor of his generation," all have been used to describe Sean Penn. Throughout his remarkable career in the dramatic arts, as well as his occasionally explosive personal life, Sean Penn has proved he rarely plays by the rules. A tumultuous marriage to Madonna, stints in jail, and other forms of hell-raising marked Penn's younger years, along with some stunning performances on film. Later, Penn emerged as a brilliant director, devoted father, contentious political activist…and reluctant actor, capable nevertheless of breathtaking performances (Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown, Mystic River, and 21 Grams). Illustrated with over seventy-five black and white photographs and drawing on exclusive interviews with Penn and his family, friends and colleagues (Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, Woody Allen, Susan Sarandon, Bono, Christopher Walken, Angelica Huston, and many more), Kelly creates an engaging, richly detailed and multi-faceted portrait of an uncompromising American artist in this exclusive and engrossing authorized biography.

A fascinating biographical survey & "window" into the career and personal life of the accomplished actor & director Sean Penn.......2006-04-05
Sean Penn: His Life And Times - The Authorized Biography by journalist Richard T. Kelly is a fascinating biographical survey and "window" into the career and personal life of the accomplished actor and director Sean Penn. Exclusively documented and informatively written, Sean Penn: His Life And Times explores many interesting intricacies of the friendships, career moves, family and landmarks of Sean Penn's life, including interviews from his colleagues and friends Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, Woody Allen, Susan Sarandon, Bono, Christopher Walken, Angelica Huston, and many more recognized and praised individuals. Very highly recommended reading for all Sean Penn fans, as well as Hollywood film buffs interested in behind-the-scenes realities of the Hollywood film industry. Sean Penn.
Readable, interesting and insightful.......2006-02-17
Reminiscent of the classic HEAR ME TALKIN' TO YOU by Nat Hentoff in which musicians themselves talk about their music, this is more about a single subject - SEAN PENN - and less about the craft of acting. To that extent it tends towards the hagiography but interspersed is much interesting insights into acting, the film making process, and 20th century history in the USA from the perspective of some very interesting characters not least of whom include the subject's father LEO PENN and mother EILEEN RYAN PENN both vital, fascinating, and vivid individuals. Quite a good read especially if you are a fan of PENN's films eg, THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN, MYSTIC RIVER and 21GRAMS
More than a character actor, but an actor with character!.......2006-01-26
Sean Penn seems frightfully young to have his biography in print, however, in terms of career, he is an old Hollywood hand, the proof -- is rather well documented by his contemporaries..Penn has been schlepping in showbiz for decades, with an eclectic/eccentric body of work, he started early and with certain purpose..And acting is overwhelmingly in his genes, his mother Eileen Ryan Penn was once a noteworthy stage queen, is in fact regarded in select theatrical circles as the quintessential Blanche Dubois, over and above even Vivien Leigh..Penn's father Leo was a tireless, trouble-shooting Hollywood television series director, known for the 60's hospital episodics like "Ben Casey," and "Doctor Kildare"..And Leo was the victim of an unfounded HUAC blacklist, that froze his career like a nuclear winter, having once been peripherally named as a Pinko sympathizer by a "friend"..In actuality, Leo was a decorated veteran, a tailgunner, having flown three dozen successful bomber missions during WWII..Ironic?..Most people don't know Eileen was both Irish, and Italian, and Leo was a non-practicing Russian Jew..You began to appreciate why Sean is naturally versatile..And Sean grew up in a Hollywood/Malibu household that supported the brothers in all their endeavors and passions, but don't wrongfully assume Sean was the benefactor of orchestrated nepotism, as Leo's kid..Sean studied his craft for years behind his parent's back, toiling in LA workshops, and relocated to a cockroach infested flat in New York to more seriously refine his skills..When strapped for cash, Penn camped out with other starving actors, slept on their couches for months on end, on both coasts, and in time made positive noise accepting showy parts in off-Broadway plays, relentlessly on the prowl for agency representation, that inched along like a North Sea iceberg..No joke, Sean was spurned by every major talent agency in the country at one juncture or another..In fact, when Penn's parents first saw him act, they asked themselves, does Sean realize he is so awful, yet, no doubt unafraid?..Obviously, Sean evolved into a dedicated method actor..And his coharts generously toss the words loyalty and integrity around to define his character..This biography is a series of interviews, an oral history by both Sean Penn and the many actors he's worked with over the years (ala Christopher Walken, Elizabeth McGovern)..You won't want to put this book down for an instant..It's a marvelous recap how Sean Penn made the grade from obscure "bad boy" actor to A-list bankable star, despite a disruptive detour with Madonna and Johnny Law..And a penetrating insight into how the "Hurly Burly" Hollywood system operates..Read it!
Great talks on a great actor.......2004-12-30
Having seen Sean Penn up close in Sam Shepard's The LATE HENRY MOSS, having flown up from San Diego, first-row, watching him and Nolte battle one another, was for me a once-in-a-lifetime experience that started, like the book, in the beginning: Taps, 'Fast Times,' 'Bad Boys'...this book is one long rambling conversation about the art of acting, the art of Penn, and all the details of his life. Integrity is a word that reappears and could be applied to choices this great actor has made, even by going to Iraq to see what was going on over there! We should all be curious enough to question. This is a book about stories, about what movies could have been made, should have been made, about paths crossing, told straight and sober. This is an actor who is getting better and better, more honest, organic, raw even. Just wait 'til 'Richard Nixon' comes your way, let alone the masterful last year's 'Mystic.' If you love this actor, love his performances (my brother's favorite is Kleinfeld in 'Carlito's,' mine: ALL, ok, I thought 'Hurlyburly' is as good as it gets to becoming scarily real). Get this book. If you love acting, and the stories of projects put together, riding on that integrity, staying close to what you believe in, this book on Penn is definitive, told by those real close, told by those who talk now by the great actor whose lineage is from the great ones (the great one who recently passed: Brando). I love this book.

Loved by millions in his heyday, exiled into obscurity in his middle age, and worshipped anew in his final years, Charlie Chaplin has been the subject of many biographies. In this book, Kenneth S. Lynn focuses on Chaplin's personal, political, and romantic associations. Lynn sees Chaplin's obsessive egotism and brutality toward women as a result of his obscure London upbringing and the torment and embarrassment his mentally disturbed mother caused him. Lynn also takes a fresh look at Chaplin's alleged victimization at the hands of immigration officials in the 1950s and performs an intriguing psychological reading of Limelight, which he considers Chaplin's most autobiographical film. Along the way, Lynn provides mini-histories of issues and events that shaped Chaplin's life, including a consideration of the tramp in early 20th-century America, biographies of famous silent film stars, and an account of the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
Book Description
This astute biography of Chaplin's life and times delves into his childhood, career, and often controversial relationships with four wives and a slew of mistresses to illuminate his elusive genius and cinematic output, as well as his sometimes reprehensible personal behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Unpleasant.......2006-03-01
Kenneth S. Lynn's "Charlie Chaplin and His Times" is an almost-unmitigated piece of ugly character assassination. Focusing obsessively on Chaplin's romantic/sexual liaisons and his "radical-left" politics, it is not Mr. Chaplin so much as Mr. Lynn himself who ends up as the unlikeable figure: narrow-minded, prudish, politically-unbalanced and, ultimately, unfair. By the book's midpoint, the only reason to continue reading is to marvel at the insidious viciousness with which Lynn pretends to accurately portray Chaplin [a task which pays dividends on nearly every page]. Chaplin was surely no saint, but Lynn's account allows Chaplin no quarter, continually twisting incidents in such a way as to render Chaplin as little more than a libido-driven, communist-duped, ungrateful egotist-and while these elements may have been present in the man, obviously he was much more. Lynn gives us precious little of the "more." To add to the book's ineffectiveness, it offers few insights into Chaplin's films themselves. Scrambling for a positive statement about the book, the best thing one can say is that it is rather gracefully-written. In sum, Kenneth S. Lynn's biography of Charlie Chaplin is a one-sided, mean-spirited, entirely unsympathetic book which does no one any good. Not recommended.
One-Sided, Hateful Biography.......2006-01-10
This will be short because much of what I have to say echoes previous reviews. Kenneth Lynn dislikes Chaplin to the the extent that he has written a biography of the man that is patently unfair and one-sided. Lynn is often shameful in attributing hateful and narcissistic motives to as many of Chaplin's career and life decisions as he can. Lynn focuses obsessively on Chaplin's sordid sex life at the expense of his exquisite art. (Lynn doesn't know much about film, it is clear). Lynn writes of Chaplin's political leanings in terms that would make all but red-baiting Joseph McCarthy, the Junior Senator from Wisconsin, blush. Its almost as though through Lynn, McCarthy has returned from the grave. Read this book only if David Robinson's "Chaplin: His Life and Art" remains out of print, and then read it skeptically and as a last resort.
Right Wing Diatribe.......2005-05-30
Two stars because the biography is a thorough life examination & extremely well researched. Is this a biography of Charles Chaplin or a ceaseless right wind diatribe against all things "left"? Lynn sits atop his comfortable ivory tower of academia and deigns to lecture instead of enlighten. Lynn seems infinately more interested in pushing his extremist agenda than he is presenting an understanding of Chaplin's art and genius. Lynn's biography is unprofessional & unscholarly: hateful, insulting, condescending, name calling, accusatory, assumptive and filled with convenient monday morning quarterbacking. He uses words like "seems" "perhaps" "maybe" "apparently" and "possibly" far too often. Lynn feels perfectly comfortable jumping to conclusions and cherry picking his research to support them. I wasn't aware Prof Lynn's expertise extended into analytical pychology & mind reading. Repeatedly, he makes a point of damning with faint praise or blank faced dismissiveness Chaplin's tremendous achievments in comedy, drama and filmmaking. In discussing the Communist witchhunts and blacklisting of several suspected reds, including Chaplin, Lynn's attitude is a rather airy "gotta break some eggs to make an omelete." That Chaplin was, in many ways, a horrid person, is hardly news. His narcissism, dishonesty, unpatriotism toward both Britain & his adopted country, prevarication, petty tyranny, meanspiritness, cheapness, disrespect for his fans, professional ingratitude, bitterness, self loathing, and misogyny have been thoroughly documented. What I was hoping for was a biography that would at least say, "Sure he was a jerk but he was also a brilliant artist." Lynn focuses on the jerk & all but ignores the artist & the reader is poorer for this lack of insight.
The Tramp was a Red!.......2003-12-23
The best thing I can say about this biography by Kenneth Lynn is that counterbalances the 1992 biopic of Chaplin's life. In this film, Robert Downey Jr portrayed Chaplin as an artist-hero who was martyred by the political right. While the Chaplin movie didn't ring particularly true for me, Lynn's biography appears to go too far in the opposite direction. This biography is not about Chaplin the Tramp, Chaplin the filmmaker, Chaplin the comic. Its about Chaplin the sputtering, spastic tyrant, Chaplin the felon, Chaplin the sex fiend, Chaplin the Red.
This book reads more like an indictment than a biography. Lynn makes his case persistently and repetitiously. He grants weight to negative accounts of Chaplin's character while positive accounts are brushed aside, or are relegated to the footnotes. (A typical example: Lynn gives an account of the problematic relations between Chaplin and Brando. Lynn relies on Brando's account of an interaction between the two men, which reveals Chaplin as a petty tyrant. Then, in the footnote Lynn slips in a completely contradictory account of the same incident by another source. The footnoted source, which depicts Chaplin in a much more favorable light, seems far more credible than Brando's. Lynn repeatedly dismisses the veracity of Chaplin's autobiography. But when he comes to Brando - now there's a reliable memoirist!)
In some cases, Lynn delivers jabs at his subject which seem quite pointless (for example, Lynn states that Chaplin "ignorantly" named his Modern Times heroine the Gamin. (the word is correctly spelled gamine). To me, this sort of criticism seems petty and overly personal. In sum, this mean spirited and poorly informed biography of Charlie Chaplin can be safely bypassed. David Robinson's Chaplin biography remains the primary recommendation.
beware: author hates subject!.......2000-01-12
This book is factually wonderful. More details about Chaplin's life are discussed here than in other bios. But, I gradually wondered what it was that was bothering me about the writing. Suddenly it dawned on me. Kenneth Lynn hates Chaplin! I dont know why, but there is an overwhelming sense that he is doing his best to knock Chaplin down wherever he can, but Chaplin's genius is always sticking it to him in the end. Read with the knowledge that the author is in no way in love with his subject (a strange concept to be sure) this book can be read through and enjoyed with reservations. Without realizing this fact though, the reader can get a very unfair view of Chaplin.

John Gielgud tells the story of his life in the theatre, from the time of the great actor/managers like Tree and du Maurier and star actresses like Sarah Bernhardt and his own great aunt Ellen Terry, to his famous partnerships with Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson.
Customer Reviews:
Moderately interesting autobiography, but too much on his early career.......2007-05-10
Heard the taped version of AN ACTOR AND HIS TIME, written
and read by Sir John Gielgud.
Gielgud, arguably the greatest Shakespearean actor of the 20th
century, is perhaps best known by modern audiences for his
starring role in ARTHUR . . . however, he appeared in well over
120 other movies and TV productions--in addition to his stage work.
While I found AN ACTOR AND HIS TIME moderately interesting,
I was disappointed that most of its emphasis was on Gielgud's
work on the English stage . . . I would have much preferred
more emphasis on his latter work.
In addition, I enjoyed hearing about such modern performers as
Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson . . . that said, tales of his
own great aunt Ellen Terry (also a star actress) were of little interest
to me.
The fact that AN ACTOR AND HIS TIME was narrated by Gielgud,
who still had a magnificent voice at the time of taping, helped maintain
my interest.
