            Book Description

This new edition of a classic hiking guide to Pennsylvania's heartland features 11 new hikes. Veteran trailblazer and outdoor activist Tom Thwaites, the author of two other 50 Hikes guides to Pennsylvania, has completely revised and updated this guide to the central portion of Penn's Woods. A wonderful area of wild country and wildlife, this region offers a vast network of maintained trail systems, yet is nevertheless lightly traveled. The author has added 11 new hikes to reflect changing trail conditions, and has rehiked and checked each of the remaining hikes for this fourth edition. Each hike includes a topographical map, information on mileage, rise, and difficulty, and narrative on sights you'll see along the way. 11 new hikes in this edition, 40 black and white photographs, 51 maps, index.

3 out of 5 stars Practical, but uninspiring.......2004-11-15

This is a decent book describing the basics of 50 different hikes. The book has two pages of text plus a small map of each hike. The text tells you how long the hike is, provides basic driving directions, and indicates whether the hike is rocky or wet. However, I felt uninspired after reading about the hikes. I was left wondering whether it was really worth a two hour drive for some of these out of the way hikes.

The author does not present this book as the 50 best hikes, only as a list of 50 decent hikes. I would have liked to see color photos, better maps, a better list of what to look for on the hikes, rankings of the most enjoyable hikes, and a numerical rating of aspects such as rockiness, steepness, and wetness, so I could better determine how certain age groups would fair on the hikes.

            3 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2004-07-25

This is an good book describing several trails in the area. Some of the trail descriptions are a bit on the short side, but overall it does a good job locating overlooks and trail descriptions.

The only thing I could suggest is setting up a website to go along with this book. Something that could keep track of errata and trail conditions along with a messageboard and such. The first time I used this book, we did hike #6, the Maple Run Trail and found out that the book says to go out 2.8 miles out Maple Run Road for the trailhead, but in reality, it is only 1.3 miles. We lost a day of hiking because of the error. If there was an easy way to monitor such errata, it would help.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource--we owe a lot to the author.......2002-07-23

Tom Thwaites has done a lot for the Pennsylvania trails, and is the father of the Mid State Trail, which is my favorite trail to day hike. This edition of 50 Hikes in CPA is nicely updated from the last edition, and the hikes are all excellent. Dr. Thwaites loves great views, and so do I, and this book will get you to the best of them. One thing I especially like about this book is the careful research that has gone into relating the history of the areas you are hiking in--it's nice to know a little something other than where you are! About the only complaint I have about this indispensible guide is the fact that some of the suggested hikes are quite arduous and long for me. I'm a big guy, so I wear out easily, and this may not apply to you. What I've done, though, is used this book in combination with the MST maps to make my own day hikes with the same destinations. I've also done some of his recomended hikes as overnighters. Between this and Jean Aron's "The Short Hiker" you have a great start on hiking in this area. Kudos to Dr. Thwaites and his efforts!

5 out of 5 stars a definite must for any PA hiker.......1999-11-23

I only began hiking at the end of September but have done 6 hikes so far. I've done 2 hikes in this book (Bohen Run (#36) Pine Trail and Hemlock Mtn (#41?)), which were my first hike and my most difficult hike respectively. I've also done 4 hikes in Thwaites' Eastern PA book. This author is almost always very precise and descriptive. Even as a beginning hiker I found his text so easy to follow. He points out neat things to check out, side trails, etc. but also leaves some surprises out. Some are good, some are not so good. Sometimes his descriptions leave out things like climbs, which beginning hikers need to know. And some trails are badly blazed or have hunters, which should be noted. Some trails need to be updated. But overall, I can't recommend his books enough. Thoroughly interesting, accessible, and informative. I always feel completely safe with his book in my hands. I still don't see how he did Pine Trail and Hemlock Mtn in only 6 hours though! He must be in great shape! We usually finish about an hour less than the hike time, but that one was difficult. He is definitely the authority on hiking! I hope he keeps writing and finding new trails for us to explore!

            4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......1998-07-21

Mostly a very good resource. Speaking on a pure scenic level, the author shows you some fantastic views and pretty trails. However, he fails to tell you sometimes when the trail is incredibly rocky or steep. Overall, though, definately worth the money

For more than fifty years, Willie Sutton devoted his boundless energy and undoubted genius exclusively to two activities at which he became better than any man in history: breaking in and breaking out. The targets in the first instance were banks and in the second, prisons. Unarguably America’s most famous bank robber, Willie never injured a soul, but took on almost a hundred banks and departed three of America’s most escape-proof penitentiaries. This is the stuff of myth—rascally and cautionary by turns—yet true in every searing, diverting, and brilliantly recalled detail.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Willie Sutton was an amazing man.......2006-09-27

I stumbled upon this book in the library, and thought it looked pretty interesting, so I checked it out. Little did I realize how interesting it would be. This book details the life of Willie Sutton, bank robber extraordinare, a man who held the #1 most wanted spot for over two years. I expected him to be a thuggish man, but boy was I wrong. It turns out he was quite a gentleman and intellectual, who had some kind of compulsion to rob banks. He never fired a gun, never physically harmed anyone, and managed to steal so much money from the government that they made him their most wanted man. When they caught him and sent him to prison, he spent his time reading Kierkegaard, Kant, Victor Hugo, etc. He then escapes from a maximum security prison which no one has escaped from in it's 100+ year existence, and works in a nursing home while trying to lay low, because he wanted to help people. He gets caught again, escapes again from a maximum security prison, makes the Most Wanted list, and is finally caught when he is in his 50's. He ends up with three life sentences. He decided he was too old to escape from prison again, so instead he spent a few years reading all the law books he could get his hands on, appealed all of his court decision, and had all of them overturned on technicalities that he had come across while reading. He spent the last 10-15 years of his life peacefully, as a law abiding citicen. Quite an interesting story to say the least. When asked by a reporter why he robbed banks, he supposedly said "Because that's where the money is." Hence the title of the book.

I did a little research on Sutton after I read the book, thinking that perhaps he had just tried to make himself look good. It turns out that he spent his post-jail life lecturing on prison reform and helping banks increase the level of their security. Mr. Sutton is perhaps the only class act robber I have read of this side of Robin Hood.

              Overall grade: A

5 out of 5 stars Review of Where the money was........2004-08-23

This book was a great read.I remember hearing about Willie Sutton when I was a child.I have also read I,Willie Sutton which was written in 1953.This is by far the better book.Willie kept the code until the latter years of his life. After reading both books I saw the truth in this publication.Highly recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced Reading!.......2002-01-26

This book makes you feel like you are side-by-side with Willie thru the planning, bank robberies, getaways, and even prison breaks. It is written in down-to-earth language and makes you feel like Willie is your buddy, and you are sitting there listening to him tell his story. Willie makes you feel like it was okay to rob the banks, and you find yourself rooting for him. It was amazing how his mind worked, so methodically planning breaking INTO the banks, and the same mindset is what helped him break OUT of prison.

              "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"

                    Book Description

FOR THE LOVE OF ROTTWEILERS celebrates its magnificent subject in word and image. One hundred photographs of a prestigious group of pet photographers admiringly contemplate the Rottweiler as a living companion at work, at play, and at rest. The text by the eminent dog writer, Robert Hutchinson, elucidates with unprecedented clarity the hitherto obscure origins of the breed in Germany at the turn of the twentieth century. This is a book to be reckoned with by all students of the breedand chewn like a sinewy schnapps by all Rottweiler lovers.

The first chapter ticks off the awesome design features that mark the Rottweiler as a triumph of genetic engineering. The second chapter recounts the firsts from the dawn of the breed (1882-1905): first written mentions, first images, first standards, and first dog show appearances. Hutchinson shows that all the specimens of this earliest phase were distinctly longer in the leg and muzzle than our modern Rottweiler. This lanky conformation was eliminated from stud by the triumph of a breed club that was formed in 1907 to advance the cause of a radically new mastiff-like conformation corresponding to that of the modern breed. The third chapter calculates maximum rates of point change attainable in dog breeding programs and concludes the modern Rottweiler could not possibly have been derived from the early Rottweiler by inbreeding alone. The final chapter presents a best-fit scenario for the development of the modern Rottweiler breed by successive outcrossings of a traditional long-legged herding type to two established breeds: first to the robust Leonberger, and then to the stocky early Boxer.

As the title indicates, Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours is a book with a friendly, lighthearted approach. Author Kevin Leman (The New Birth Order Book) speaks directly from his experiences as a father of five and a practicing psychologist. While you won't find specific studies or statistics here, you will find straightforward, practical suggestions that often get right to the heart of troubling situations.

Leman's technique, which he refers to as "reality discipline" is based on a particular passage from the Bible, and his book is liberally sprinkled with his religious beliefs. These references will make this book a particular favorite for some readers; his stance that parents' authority comes directly from God is a fundamental principle of his text, and some parents may prefer a less evangelistic approach. That said, it's hard to disagree with suggestions such as "train yourself to be a good listener" and "give your children direct eye contact." Nearly every suggestion is coupled with a real-life example of the behavior in discussion, making for an easy read, and every chapter ends with questions labeled "to review and apply" as well as a short section of concepts to put into practice. The section dealing with divorce suggests you make a list of the chapter's suggestions you find difficult and create a plan to implement them. Leman assumes that anyone reading this book can find the time to create such plans themselves, and doesn't provide his readers with any step-by-step charts. If you're not up to creating your own action plans, you may prefer a more detailed form of help than this book offers. --Jill Lightner

                                      Book Description

Raising children these days can be daunting. But if anyone understands why children behave the way they do, it's Dr. Kevin Leman. Equipping parents with seven principles of Reality Discipline--a loving no-nonsense parenting approach that really works--this internationally known psychologist, author, and father of five shows parents how to: understand why children misbehave and what to do about it; foil finicky eaters, turn off temper tantrums, and minimize sibling rivalries; set suitable allowances, curfews, and privileges; and much more. Real-life examples, questions at the end of each chapter, and a discussion guide for individual or group use make this book an engaging read for parents, teachers, and child care providers. With over a million copies in print, readers can't go wrong with this classic and continual best-seller-now in a fun, new package.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK ON RAISING KIDS.......2007-07-16

I ONLY WISH I HAD HAD THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS RAISING MY OWN CHILDREN. I READ THIS BOOK AND BAUGHT ONE FOR EACH OF MY CHILDREN. THEY TOO THOUGHT IT WAS THE BEST BOOK THEY HAD READ. I RECENTLY BAUGHT IT FOR A FRIEND WHO WAS HAVING GREAT DIFFICULTY WITH HER TWO OLDER KIDS, AND SHE TOO FOUND IT TO BE VERY HELPFUL. LIFE IS REALITY, WHY NOT HELP YOUR CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THAT FROM THE BEGINNING.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh! Not my Cup of Tea.......2007-05-13

Call it buyer negligence if you choose but for some reason, I really thought this book would give tried and true methods to help me with my child. Instead, I get bible passages and references back to the previous bible quotation. I don't need bible thumping. I was looking for advice.

5 out of 5 stars This book affirmed my instincts about parenting.......2007-05-12

My instincts for raising my 2 1/2 year old son have always been to apply loving discipline. However in moments of doubt I would take on an authoritarian approach. As a result, I was completely inconsistent. Those inconsistencies were obvious to my son and he responded accordingly. I now feel informed and affirmed about how to guide my son in learning to accept the realities of life. My son's behavior immediately changed once I consistently applied the principals discussed in this book.

5 out of 5 stars ONe of the best books on Parenting.......2007-05-04

I read this book years ago when my girls were small. Now I have bought it for my daughter and some other friends with small children.
The book is about choices. We all make choices and learning there are consequences for our choices. Kevin is a great writing and very easy to read. He has a great sense of humor.

3 out of 5 stars Preachy and Too Simplistic.......2007-04-15

The overall strategies in this book have some clout, but the overwhelming religious preaching is a nuisance at best. Leman assumes everyone is religious and everyone who is religious is Christian. Constantly quoting the New Testament as if it were a Christian Bible class is a huge turn off in this book. Not to mention his blanket approval of spanking as long as you say you love them afterwards....
I like many of his approaches but his way is only one way and I found he speaks as the ultimate authority leaving very little room for the many children that are not "cured" by his theories.
I found he speaks much more about God than he did about sibling rivalry a huge issue in many homes, and probably expects you to buy his book specifically about that.

                                                    Book Description

An intimate look at renowned painter Thomas Kinkade's life and art, including never-before-seen paintings and photographs. Thomas Kinkade is America's most collected living artist. His mass appeal surely stems from his unique ability to emphasize simple pleasures and convey inspirational messages through his paintings. The Thomas Kinkade Story celebrates the twentieth anniversary of Kinkade's first published work and includes an intimate look at the artist's life and paintings through the eyes of Rick Barnett. The book examines each period in Kinkade's career, beginning in his early days as he meets the mentors who will influence him, moving on to his life in the eighties as he becomes a recognized painter and a husband, and continuing through the nineties as he paints groundbreaking scenes of national parks and San Francisco, and progresses from his English Cottage period to his use of soft light and broken color. The book also showcases never-before-seen private photographs and paintings, including new works that embody Kinkade's 21st century style.

This work is the equivalent of a chocolate sundae for the eyes.....you BET it is popular.....but unless you consider fast food to be fine dining...lets dispense with the superlatives accorded these artbits. As a more "healthy visual feast"I suggest as a starting point the work of Gustav Baumann or Christopher Burkett(photographer extraodinaire!) if you enjoy beauty in the landscape as your subject of contemplation. After seeing their work you may be embarrassed at your admiration for this stuff.Come on people....get OUT more!!

Have you ever heard anyone scoff at Kinkade's work, because it is "too commercial" ? There are many who disdain work that is embraced by "the common man", and work that is reproduced for a mass market. So be it, but I do not agree with this elitist viewpoint, and think that in many years to come, Kinkade's work will be far more valued than some of what is "fashionable" in art circles today.
This is a magnificent coffee table book, with thick glossy pages and excellent color reproduction, and a well written text by Rick Barnett. I pored over this volume with a magnifying glass, examining the details, the brushwork, and the evolution of Kinkade's work over the years.

Part I, "The Early Years": Born in 1958, Kinkade was drawing before he could walk, and his first mentor was the Bay Area artist of renown Glenn Wessels, who in 1974 moved to Thom's Placerville, California neighborhood. Later while studying at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, he painted "The Prince of Peace", which he saw in a vision, and it is a powerful piece.

Part II, "20 Years of Published Work":
"The Early Works, 1984-1989". Many of these pieces are massive scenic vistas and city street sceenes, and my one and only complaint of this book is that it does not give the dimensions of the original paintings.
"The Artist is Recognized, 1989-1993". On page 55, is a piece I find startling, "New York, Snow on Seventh Avenue, 1932", painted in 1989; with its extraordinary perspective, and skyscrapers bathed in the light of the setting sun, it captures the feeling of another era and there is a palpable sense of movement in it...and it is a painting I could look at for years and never tire of.
In 1990, during a family trip to England, the cottage paintings were born. The one that I find incredibly lovely is "Spring at Stonegate". The graceful slope of the roof, and the dappled sunlight are beautiful.

"Chasing the Horizon, 1993-1997". The Kinkade family moved to the South Bay area of San Francisco, and the plein air paintings took flight. My favorite of this genre is "Wailea Pool, Maui" (1996), with broad free strokes, the wind is ruffling the palm trees, and the clouds seem to be dancing.
There also seems to be a heightened idealism emerging during these years, which becomes even more evident in "The Golden Era, 1997-2000", where the landscapes take on a misty, eerie light. In the world of "Cobblestone Bridge" (2000), Kinkade says "man and nature live in God's perfect balance".

"Light of Freedom, 2000-2004". Inspired by a dream, Kinkade painted "The Light of Freedom" in 2002 as a tribute to 9/11, and from 2001, "San Francisco, Lombard Street", with an entire vista of the city, is a marvel; another treasure is "Desert Sunset" (2002), with its red sky and magical twinkling lights in the distance.
Motivated by his faith, and dreams and visions, Kinkade's gentle world of peace and light is sure to shine for many generations.

By M.J. Trow and Taliesin Trow
                                                    Review by Robin Kichnet

I have always been intensely curious about the middle ages as played out on the island from which has sprung the largest share of great minds the world has ever known. Crime novelist T.J. Trow has briefly opened a peep hole for history voyeurs such as myself and invited us a look. If books can produce a sound or a smell, I am sure I heard the shrieking cries of filthy inmates through the grates of old Clink prison as their pitiful pleas for mercy floated through the crowded streets of London. Well-traveled roads of the urban Rennaissance that meandered, sometimes on course with the murky Thames, often found their way to the play houses and the pubs of the writers, the scholars, and the thinking men; covert clubs where undoubtedly the seeds of conspiracies were planted and plans hatched in whispered voices swearing oaths but death to those who violate.
One such scholar, to whom these favoured dark alleys often felt the weight of his boot, was a poet, a Cambridge man, known to his friends as Kit. To the rest of us, who speculate, dream, and debate, we will only know him as Christopher Marlowe; contemporary to Shakespeare. Author M.J.Trow, has put together in true crime style, all the little sketches of Marlowe's life of which there simply isn't enough. In an attempt to satisfy a real Rennaissance mystery full of intrigue, secret societies, a powerful queen, and murder, Trow performs admirably. Using a modern detective's eye, Trow looks 400 years behind him at a culture wrestling to break free of the unenlightened centuries stacked behind it. He provides the reader extra large snippets of Elizabethan society to aid him in this journey, and in a way that is often as meandering as the Thames, brings us to a great reckoning through his book: Who Killed Kit Marlowe?
Potentially a playwright as great as Shakespeare, Marlowe was cut down in the prime of his life as his career, notoriety, and finesse with a quill had just crossed over from adept to brilliant. He left us wanting more and he left us wanting to know why he did not live long enough to give us our desire. This author is completely aware of the reader's wonder. His research seems skillful enough as he provides extensive notes and a lengthy bibliography, all the while supplying us with text carefully woven through the pubs, playhouses, and alleyways of Elizabethan London and the surrounding countryside.
Understanding that he must dissect the theories that have gone before him, Trow's book is portioned into chapters starting with what is known about Marlowe, to what has been conjectured. His skepticism of old research is usually not without some original sources, historical prowess, and plain logic to lend the possibility that he might be on the right track. For example, Trow has expressed disappointment with other writers and what he believes to be their skimming-over of the true significance of the damning Baines note, a surviving document. Richard Baines made 19 charges against Marlowe in a note that was sent to the authorities just days before the playwright was murdered. Trow believes that Baines was telling the truth because of the content of the 15th charge, (minting money, a treasonable offense) which does not seem to have any relationship with the other atheistic charges. With the support of other documents referencing Marlowe's dismal attempt at producing a coin, Trow believes the other charges of "atheism," which in the Rennaissance was a broad term for corruption or nonconformist, could certainly be true.
Although the largest part of Trow's book is written clearly with a specific historical perspective to illuminate it, along with source documents to shore it up, occasionally he fails to give the reader an accounting of the source of a few of his conclusions. While pondering what might have happened to Marlowe's possessions immediately after his death, Trow mentions that the "unfinished poem, Hero and Leander," lay where Marlowe had left it, at Scadbury, the manor where Marlowe spent his last days. In an earlier chapter he states the poem was, "three quarters complete." The latter thought is pure speculation in that several other Marlowe critics have thought the poem ended as Marlowe wanted it to end.

The last chapter in Trow's book ends with a cryptic reference to the possible conspiracies surrounding the death of Princess Diana. It is understood that among academic circles there is little value in the belief in conspiracy theories and discussions about them are only met with derision. It is unclear by his references whether the author is telling his readers that political conspiracies were a commonality in long ago England and not today, or that they exist in as big a force as ever. Trow does seem to be telling us that his interpretation of events logically point to Marlowe's life and death as not being mere accidents. But no matter, the players in this possible conspiracy have long ago been left to molder in the bog of an ancient cemetery.
With these minor details aside, the glimpse into the intrigue and seamy underside of Elizabethan London with notes and references for further study, make this true crime novel worth the trouble of speculating on a murder four centuries past. Undoubtedly, Trow's aim is to help voyeurs of history understand the strange and scandalous world of an enigmatic Christopher Marlowe; just one of the many inscrutable minds that English has produced.

4 out of 5 stars Quite an interesting book.......2001-10-14

On May 30, 1593, the acclaimed playwright Christopher "Kit" Marlowe (b.1564) died in the home of Eleanor Bull, having attacked another man over who would pay for the day's drinking. At least that's what the coroner ruled. The authors of this book believe that Marlowe earned an important someone's ire, and was murdered.

The book follows Marlowe's life, as he lived in the turbulent Elizabethan England. In an often-rambling narrative, the authors meander from topic to topic, giving the reader a fascinating look into the seamy underside of this "Golden Age." In the final chapters, the authors examine competing theories concerning Marlowe's murder, and then present their own explanation.

This is quite an interesting book. The authors reveal a great deal of information on Elizabethan England, the sort of information that you will not find in most history books. My one complaint is that the wandering narrative sometimes proves disturbing, making one wonder where the authors are going. But, that said, I did enjoy this book, and am glad that I read it.
