Customer Reviews:
Indispensable.......2004-12-31
The Spartacus and Damron guides have their place on any travel bookshelf but this book has something that they do not...namely, very detailed, firsthand descriptions of the venues listed. The authors descriptions of the West Coast cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver) are pretty much spot on. For example, when in Vancouver I noticed how young all the clubgoers were and when reading the entry on that city I saw that this was not just my own perception but reality. He describes the scene in Portland, perhaps the most underrated city on the West Coast as "scruffy" but not in a perjorative sense, but rather endearingly. Each city chapter is logically broken down into nightlife, eats, sights, etc. Aside from being a cutie (based on his back cover photo) the author is always funny and perceptive in his comments. This is one of those books that I pull off my bookshelf fairly regularly and it's tragic that it is currently out of print with no new edition in sight. Early editions aren't too hard to come by but good luck tracking down the last (3rd edition) which I recommend without reservations!
Good research.......2002-11-18
I'm glad I have this book to refer to. No matter where we consider traveling, I have this handy book to know what's "out" there for us.
A great general guide to places you might miss..........2002-06-27
I bought this book back in 2001 for a trip to New York. Not knowing anything about "the city", I needed some help. Along with this one, I purchased a few other guides focusing on gay oriented places in the U.S. and New York, but this one was far better. With it's insightful mini reviews of places shown in the guide, I got ALOT from this book. From places to stay, to places to see, it'll give you a great base to start with when trying to find nightlife, or otherwise, in ANY new city. I'm taking it back with me again to New York and to Seattle this time. But, be weary, as with any guide, places change, and what you read might not be as bad as it says it is, or it could be worse! Thanks for reading.
The listings are right but misnamed ........1999-08-18
Just looking over my hometowns review I found them correct in substance but wrong in form. Cleveland has a neighborhood called "WEST PARK" that the book names WEST EDGE>. While not devastating to the overall value of the text it would leave a visitor here asking for a place that residents wouldn't recognize. I'm not sure if the other cities reviewed suffer from similar mistakes. Going to Orlando 8/24 and San Francisco 9/3 so I'll note any discrepancies.
I'm gay and I'm proud of it!.......1999-05-15
This book enabled me to have incredible experiences with the most beautiful guys from the USA! If you want to enjoy your life with other gay people such as me, this is the place you should go and this is the book you should buy.

Book Description
Royal governor of New Jersey and Massachusetts, Francis Bernard (1712-1779) was one of the most controversial-and misunderstood-figures in American colonial history. In this first modern political biography of Bernard, Colin Nicolson reappraises his significant role in shaping the course of events that led to the outbreak of the American Revolution.
Based on extensive documentary research, Nicolson reexamines Bernard's relations with colonial factions and the imperial elite, his attempts to enforce Parliamentary authority, and his influence on British government policy-making. He shows how Bernard undermined British-colonial relations on the eve of the Revolution and effectively set the stage for war.
After reviewing the formative experiences of Bernard's life in England and describing his modest success in New Jersey, the author then focuses on Bernard's tenure in Massachusetts between 1760 and 1771. Nicolson explores his turbulent relationship with the popular party and reveals how personal ambitions for himself and his family exacerbated his disagreements with the colonists. He also discusses in detail the turning point of Bernard's administration-his failure to effectively represent provincial interests during the Stamp Act Crisis.
Nicolson's research reveals facets of Bernard's governorship that are little known to most historians. He tells how Bernard was responsible for depicting Bostonians as rebellious to British ministries, but points out that discrepancies between Bernard's ideas on colonial rule and those of the British elite refute any alleged conspiracy against colonists' liberties. He also suggests the existence of a more significant pro-government faction in Massachusetts than has been recognized and proposes that Bernard's inability to cultivate the support of colonial "friends of government" eased the way for rebellious elements.

The Ultimate Golden Retriever, Second Edition
ASIN: 0876051840 |
Book Description
Northern New Jersey has a new local hero on its cultural crime turf. He's Andy Carpenter, the Paterson defense attorney who can sling a quip as fast as he can outmaneuver a snarling prosecutor. Acclaimed author David Rosenfelt's first novel, was nominated for an Edgar Award, now in this new novel, the intrepid lawyer is thrust into the spotlight where he risks becoming a media victim...of the most fatal kind.
His streak of murder case acquittals made him a regular on cable talk shows. His recent $22 million inheritance bought him a dog rescue operation named the Tara Foundation after his own beloved golden retriever. Yet after turning down cases left and right, Andy Carpenter thinks he's facing a midlife crisis.
When a friend, a newspaper owner, calls in a favor and asks him to protect his star reporter, Andy is less than thrilled. His new client is Daniel Cummings, a journalist who is being used as a mouthpiece by a brutal serial killer. Things only get worse when Daniel is discovered near the body of the murderer's latest victim. And after Andy himself starts collecting anonymous death threats, he hears the news every defense lawyer dreads...and moves to within a dangerous keystroke of becoming tomorrow's obituary.
Customer Reviews:
Great!!.......2007-09-19
Another great one from Rosenfelt. I enjoyed his first two books more than this one, but still a wonderful entry into the Andy Carpenter series.
A fun read........2007-05-12
Great wit and fast paced. The characters just become more rich with each book.
Rosenfelt Scores Big Again!.......2007-03-14
Rosenfelt succesfully follows up his first two novels, Open And Shut and First Degree, with Bury The Lead. Rosenfelt has become one of the freshest voices among today's mystery writers due to his ability to provide interesting plots, credible courtroom drama, lots of humor and well-developed major and minor characters. Andy Carpenter, the main character who is a wise-cracking suburban New Jersey defense attorney, is one that stays in your mind even after you finish the book and is one that I'm looking forward to 'hang out' with in his future legal adventures. Plus, his dog, Tara, is one I wish I had. The only factor that keeps me from giving Bury The Lead a 5-star rating is being able to guess who the murderer is a bit too easily; although figuring out the motive for the murders will, I think, keep you guessing. Despite this very minor criticism I highly recommend Bury The Lead when you're in the mood for a fast-paced, easy read. However, you might want to first consider reading Open And Shut and First Degree, which I think will further your appreciation of Bury The Lead.
Preppie versus Predator.......2006-07-28
Andy Carpenter is a politically-correct (except when it comes to sports and vegetarianism) yuppie lawyer who runs a rescue mission for dogs and dates a woman who can beat him up. He doesn't practice much law, only handling cases that interest him. He can do this because he's independently wealthy, having come into some $22,000,000.00 through no fault of his own.
As Andy whiles away the hours doing whatever he pleases, a serial killer stalks the women of his community, strangling them, taking their clothing, and cutting off their hands. When a local reporter gets arrested for the murders on seemingly ironclad evidence, Andy takes the case as a favor to a friend. Aided by an ensemble cast of recurring characters (this is the third book in a series), Andy seeks to free his client, find the real killer, and watch as much football as possible. The plot takes a number of Byzantine twists and culminates in a climax which is something of a mixture of Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler.
The writing is brisk and immediate, being done in the first person and the present tense; the humor is fast-paced; and the courtroom narrative is completely out of touch with reality. During the trial, which begins with the prosecutor giving an opening statement that should have resulted in a mistrial, Andy spends almost as much time watching sports and cavorting with friends as he does defending his client. Despite the author's apparent unfamiliarity with the inside of a courtroom, the plot sweeps you along to the deus ex machina climax.
I could not help but compare this mystery to John Maddox Roberts' SPQR series. Roberts brings Ancient Rome to life, Rosenfelt does the same for present-day Patterson, New Jersey. Roberts surrounds his protagonist with an ensemble of remarkable, interesting characters, Rosenfelt surrounds his protagonist with an ensemble of remarkably shallow characters. Roberts' plots begin slow and accelerate to a breakneck pace and an exciting conclusion, likewise for Rosenfelt. Lurking in the background of Roberts' stories are the Machiavellian Julius Caesar and Pompey, the mob boss Dominic Patron does the same for Rosenfelt's story. I prefer Roberts' Ancient Rome to Rosenfelt's Patterson, New Jersey, but I find Andy Carpenter sufficiently interesting to want to read the rest of the series.
Mystery with humor.......2006-06-27
Fast paced mystery with some humor. A well written light read with plenty of surprises.

Customer Reviews:
I take this book to card shows because of the checklists.......2003-05-13
First off, I like the size of "The Official 2003 Price Guide to Basketball Cards," which at 6.88 x 4.21 is below what we would have called standard size for collectible card price guides. This is of prime importance for collectors such as myself who want a book that we can take to us with card shows. If not, then you can still use this guide to put together your want lists. I am in the process of finishing off a 1972-73 Topps set of basketball cars (five cards to go, all commons), and will be getting serious about the 1971-72 Topps set next. So I do not need to know how many types of Kobe Bryant cards came out this season or who has the first "official" LeBron James card, because I have a preference for tracking down the older cards, go to shops and shows to try and track down what I need, or searching on eBay. A big part of the fun is just finding what are you are looking for, and not by opening up pack after pack of cards to find the exalted specialty card du jour. The prices are really a secondary consideration to me, because what I want to know if whose name goes with which numbers because that means the difference between looking through a stack of commons or having to track down star cards, especially if you are trying to deal with those triplet cards Topps put out in 1980-81.
That is why the boxes to check off for each card are exactly what I need, whether it is the exalted card from that 1980-81 set where the three players were the rookie "cards" for Magic Johnson and Larry Bird but also Dr. J. This is the book that will tell you that if you are looking for the first basketball card ever produced then you need to track down the 1948 Bowman card of Ernie Calverley. There are about two dozen card companies covered in the 50,000 cards for which prices are provided, which means Topps, Fleer, Hopps, Bowman, Sky Box, Ultra, Upper Deck and all the wannabee companies. As is always the case with the Beckett volumes, there are tips on how to buy, sell, and care for your cards. These are valuable whether you are in it for the fun or the economics. The prices are always the least important aspect of these books for the simple reasons that the prices are out of date by the time the book hits the stands, which is why Beckett publishes a magazine on basketball cards. However, while that will give you current prices it will not tell you who was card #40 in that 1972-73 Topps set (Bob Rule of the Philadelphia 76ers). For the younger fans the magazine will undoubtedly suffice, but for those of us who remember the red, white & blue ball of the A.B.A. and when players in the N.B.A. knew how to shoot the orange ball instead of just dunking it, this Beckett book will fulfill all of our needs.

Fantastic introduction to art.......2007-08-28
We bought the 4-box collection which includes this book, and have bought many of the others since. My daughter loves them, and they are a wonderful addition to any child's library.
interesting .......2007-07-16
My 16 month old son enjoys this book very much. He is fascinated by the images and he likes to listen to the rhymes as well. An excellent introduction to art.
Bright colors for baby, actual art for parents!.......2007-05-16
Little ones love these colors, Van Gogh used a lot of vivid colors and they are just as stimulating as Seuss illustrations. Finally a book parents can ejoy reading to their kids!
In the Garden with Van Gogh.......2007-03-09
I am a preschool teacher and enjoy teaching three year olds about art and artists. One artist that we recently studied was Vincent Van Gogh. The children painted sunflowers just like Van Gogh. They loved looking at this book and hearing the story that went along with it. They spent a lot of time studying his sunflower painting in this book and then painted beautiful sunflowers of their own!
Wonderful book for toddlers!.......2006-10-04
Our son has had this book since he was about 19 months old, but he's just now becoming really interested in it a year later. This book is fantastic. The rhymes are a little awkward, but they hold a toddlers attention. The best part though, is that it introduces children to the works of one of the great masters! My son can now see a print of a Van Gogh (or tapestry, or whatever medium the piece is recreated in) and he'll run up to it and yell "Van Gogh!" It's a pretty spectacular thing to see, and what a wonderful gift for early learning!

Book Description
Vincent van Gogh is one of the most popularly admired and critically acclaimed artists of all time -- exhibitions of his work draw record crowds and his paintings fetch astronomical prices. Of his hundreds of canvases, landscapes and paintings of gardens and flowers remain the most beloved. From the sweeping wheat fields and gnarled olive branches of Provence to extravagant bouquets and fantastic details of irises and sunflowers, van Gogh captured the breathtaking beauty, expansive color spectrum, and complexity of nature at its most compelling.
Using van Gogh's eloquent personal letters and dazzling paintings as his foundation, writer and master photographer Derek Fell brings van Gogh's theories and visions of the garden to life in this lavishly illustrated volume. Fell's own expert photography not only captures the countryside, farmland, cottage gardens, and village parks that van Gogh so passionately loved but also brings to life the horticultural world that the artist dreamed of creating. Complemented by a superb selection of his greatest paintings, Van Gogh's Gardens is a marvelous celebration of nature's brilliance and one man's genius.
Searching out fragments of van Gogh's world still in existence -- the sunflower fields he tramped through, the courtyard garden of the hospital where he sought treatment -- Fell shows us that the colors and textures of the Impressionists' Provence remain with us today. He also delves deeply into the letters van Gogh wrote and gives us a wonderful discussion of the artist's color theories: Mix geraniums and poppies to create a stunning combination of red, pink, and green, he advised his sister in Holland, or interplant sweet heliotrope and roses to generate a dramatic color harmony between orange and violet.
Fell extrapolates on van Gogh's vision of gardens and plants by going one step further -- and the result is a revelation. Rigorously following the advice offered in van Gogh's letters and duplicating the garden motifs he depicted in his paintings, this exceptional gardener has brought the great artist's ideas to vibrant life on his Pennsylvania farm. Van Gogh died in abject poverty, too poor to plant a garden of his own -- but Fell's plantings and photographs show us in dazzling glory how brilliant van Gogh's reflections on color and nature really were.
In addition to offering special sections on van Gogh's favorite structures, his bouquets, and the theme gardens he painted, Van Gogh's Gardens includes a fully illustrated, alphabetical listing of the painter's favorite plants -- from arum to yucca. Both exquisitely beautiful and eminently useful, this marvelous book offers readers the opportunity to create van Gogh's artistic beauty in their own backyards. With a brilliant mix of paintings, photographs, and text, Van Gogh's Gardens allows us to see this master artist's paintings and theories as inspiration for the most beautiful gardens.

The perfect book to help you give your oppositional-defiant child the help he or she needs.
Customer Reviews:
Great Doable Parenting Skills.......2007-05-13
This book was a very easy read. It was very insightful and had a lot of useful information when dealing with a defiant child. All of the parenting advise was doable and very adaptive.
Informative Read.......2007-05-07
The descriptions of the ODD child's view of the world were quite insightful. I also liked the idea of holding children accountable for their actions, something that doesn't seem to happen enough. However, I have a feeling that most parents will balk at the extremes they will have to go to in order to get their child to change. They may intellectually understand what needs to be done, but if people had the stamina to enforce such consequences in the first place, there wouldn't be so many ODD children needing help. Still, a very informative book that I will recommend to others.
A must for raising teenagers.......2007-04-04
This book became my "bible" for raising my teenage daughter. All parents of teenagers should read this book!
GREAT PARENTING MANUAL FOR ODD CHILDREN.......2007-03-31
This is a fantastic book to help parents parent ODD kids. It is easy to use and the techniques work very quickly. If your house is in chaos because your kiddo has taken over and ruling the roost, this book will help you gain control again and YOUR SANITY.
Dealing with Defiant Teen........2007-03-31
I sent this book to my sister, and she found some of it helpful, but not all because of the unique situation she has with her teen. She has gotten a bit saturated with advice, which is not always so helpful.
Book Description

She was a young, promising artist who was already experiencing a certain amount of respect for her work in Italy and Sicily. As she left Italy to travel to America, she never knew what was going to be in store for her. The obstacles and the hardships that would befall her would challenge her both professionally and personally. But Gregersen never let go fo her dreams and her story is unforgettable.
"The Ocean-My Railroad: Diary of an Artist 1973-1999" is an autobiographical look at Era Gregersen's life from the day she set out for America. Originally, she came to America by invitation, never realizing what was in store for her future. Once there she tried to live the American dream and become a successful artist. Along the way, she realized that the American dream does not come without a few bumps in the road.
Gregersen tells the details of her life story in dramatic detail. Using material she kept in her journal, she allows the reader to experience the actual emotion of events in her life as they happened. Gregersen went through many hardships in search for her dream including: legal hassles, immigration nightmares and the everyday struggle of a person in a foreign land. Through it all she remained determined to never give up hope. "The Ocean-My Railroad: Diary of an Artist 1973-1999" is more than just a testament to Gregersen's resolve, it is a painting of her life as only she could create.
