Book Description
Rockwell Kent is one of America's most famous graphic artists. He was also an avid traveler. Kent was especially fascinated by remote Arctic lands and often stayed for extended periods of time to paint, write, and become acquainted with the local inhabitants. Between 1918 and 1935, he wrote and illustrated several popular books about his travels. Voyaging, originally published in 1924, is the engaging story of Kent's sailing voyage to Tierra del Fuego. Kent is a charming writer and keen observer of both the land and its people. The book is beautifully and generously illustrated with Kent's distinctive woodcuts.
The first edition was published to great critical acclaim. New Republic wrote, "the land lives. A land where roses are as big as sun-flowers, where gales gnaw against bleak cliffs . . . At the end of the earth, there is the paradox of the dwarf and the giant." The Nation said, "Kent has caught the wild beauty of this ominous region -- iron crags ringed with the froth of blown surf, wind-tortured trees, distant peaks incrusted with dazzling snow; but out of the very heart of this bewildering beauty emanates a sense of unseen presences appallingly, implacably hostile to man."

Great Adventure; Thrilling Moments!.......2000-04-11
Armchair adventurers who love sailing, roughing it through forests, bogs and mountains in strange lands, and meeting new people in brief encounters will love "Voyaging," by Rockwell Kent. The book begins with a shocking confession in the Introduction, and carries the reader through 184 pages of high excitement and magnificent descriptions of one of the most desolate and forsaken places in the world -- the area about Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America.
The book's main characters are (1) Kent, about 40; (2) his mate, a Norwegian of 26 years who started his life by shipping to sea under his father when 14, who after a few months of beatings jumped ship, cursing as he went, apparently never to see his father again; (3) a lifeboat, which Kent bought for $20 and named Kathleen, and with a group of tradesmen modified to include cabin, mast and rigging for sails; (4) the West Wind, which whistled ceaselessly and tossed the little boat about dangerously, and (5) a menagerie of people along the way who extended hospitality, most with loving kindness, a few with malice.
A touching moment came on Bailey Island when Kent asked 20-year-old Margarita García, the name of her three-month-old suckling daughter. The baby has no name because she has not been baptized, Margarita replied. There in that inhospitable land Kent converted a dirty hovel into a cathedral and "baptized" the child, giving her his wife's name Kathleen Kent García. Kent writes that Father García, a murderer who earlier was released from a nearby prison after serving time, said "the ceremony had pleased him particularly as it was in truth the baptism of his child."
Characteristically, Kent illustrates the book well with black-and-white drawings of the stark landscape, and a few portraits of his new acquaintances. He also includes several maps by which the reader may follow the men's attempt to sail around Cape Horn -- an adventure that did not always go according to plan, as the reader will discover. -- Allen Long, Arlington, VA.

HISTORY CRIME BUFF.......2007-06-29
Marie Barrow the youngest of the Barrow children decided to tell her story regarding Bonnie And Clyde and brother Buck Barrow but unfortunately she died within 60 days of meeting her co-writer at the age of 81. The result was mainly rehashed stories that I had read in other publications. Not enough of her personal story was included which I attribute to her untimely death. To bad the book did not go real deep into Marie and her families personal perspective. I feel the co-writer felt he had to complete the book with recycled stories
Terribly Written!.......2005-06-11
I wanted to like this book. It was written by family of Clyde, so I thought that it might have some interesting insight into the minds of the two notorious criminals. But the book skipped from event to event without going deeper into the whys AT ALL. I did not enjoy this book one tiny little bit. I thought the writing was stilted. I thought the story lacked emotion and didn't get us involved with the characters at all. There are MUCH better books on the subject out there!
Bonnie and Clyde: Definitely not a family story.......2003-04-22
If you've seen the movie and liked it, but wanted a little more detail and background info then you should really check out The Family Story of Bonnie and Clyde by Phillip Steele and none other than Clyde's own sister Marie Barrow Scoma. This book really takes full advantage of Marie's first hand knowledge about her brother and runs with it. Although, if you have a problem with violence or gruesome details i would probably avoid this one. Clyde Barrow's life begins near Teleco, Texas where he spent his early years often left to the care of his older sister Nell. He and his 6 other brothers and sisters were often unintentionally neglected by their parents. Even as a young child, Clyde loved movies with outlaws like Jesse James and would imagine himself to be these outlaws for weeks after seeing the movies. His family never stayed any one place very long, and, as a result, the kids didn't attend much school. The family soon moved to West Dallas, a homeless and vagrant area. Clyde left school at age 17, and, being handy with cars and machines, he easily found work. His first crime was merely taking a few turkeys from a neighbor's yard, but not long after that he pulled his first armed robbery. Then, teaming up with his brother, Buck, and a few other friends, he robbed the Buell Lumber Company. Soon after this is when the Outlaw Gang was formed and they robbed a few more shops before getting caught. When this happened, Clyde decided to clean up his act and he opened a family gas station with his dad. Clyde met Bonnie in January of 1930. Bonnie Parker, who had just suffered a divorce, was helping a friend who had broken her arm when Clyde stopped by to visit the girl he also new. "It was apparently love at first sight for both of them." Clyde spent the night at the Parkers and must have been pretty embarrassed when police showed up with warrants for his arrest. Bonnie wrote Clyde in jail and pleaded him never to do anything like this again, but she later aided in his escape by slipping him a gun that he and an inmate used on the guard. This marks the beginning of the infamous duo known as Bonnie and Clyde. Over the next few years, the 2 partners in crime, along with various other gang members, successfully rob over 100 businesses. You probably already know or at least have heard about the dramatic finale, but just in case, I'll leave it to you to read the book. I will tell you, however, that the tragic ending involves over 200 bullet holes. This book altogether gives an in depth background to each member and has incredible action along with humor and drama. I enjoyed The Family Story of Bonnie and Clyde tremendously. Even if you haven't heard, read, or seen anything about Bonnie and Clyde, this book covers everthing from A to Z( even whether or not Clyde was homosexual)in a way that is fairly easy to follow. I would recomend this book to anyone who enjoys action and a gripping tale of love, hate, betrayal, comedy, and two wild outlaws.
The facts without the fluff.......2003-03-21
It was a pleasure to learn more factual details about Bonnie and Clyde. What a fascinating account of the lives and deeds of this notorious pair. I certainly recommend this book.
Bonnie and Clyde Story.......2002-11-09
As a newspaper editor and historian in north Texas, "The Family Story of Bonnie and Clyde" by Phillip W. Steele was extremely helpful in my research. This book provides a wealth of important details that, taken with other records, helps provide a deeper understanding of these two outlaw icons. I look forward to seeing Mr. Steele's next release on Bonnie and Clyde. Tony Swindell, Sherman (TX) Herald-Democrat

Book Description
This volume presents the latest research on herbivores, aquatic and terrestrial mammals and insects. The Second Edition, written almost entirely by new authors, effectively complements the initial work. It includes advances in molecular biology and microbiology, ecology, and evolutionary theory that have been achieved since the first edition was published in 1979. The book also incorporates relatively new methodologies in the area of molecular biology, like protein purification and gene cloning. Volume II,
Ecological and Evolutionary Processes, also opens up entirely new subjects: The discussions of interactions have expanded to include phenomena at higher trophic levels, such as predation and microbial processing and other environmental influences.
Both this and Volume I,
The Chemical Participants, will be of interest to chemists, biochemists, plant and insect ecologists, evolutionary biologists, physiologists, entomologists, and agroecologists interested in both crop and animal science.
Key Features
* Presents coevolution of herbivores and host plants
* Examines resource availability and its effects on secondary metabolism and herbivores
Studies physiology and biochemistry of adaptation to hosts
* Includes tri-trophic interactions involving predators and microbes
Book Description
Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis.
In Stitch 'n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch 'n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch 'n Bitch group.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, even if you're just starting out.......2007-10-11
I purchased this book during the summer and found the instructions very eash to follow. I was brand new to the knitting world and was suprised by how quickly I was able to complete my first project.
A must have for the new knitter!
Fun!.......2007-09-17
Reading this book makes knitting seem fun and exciting. Very easy to understand directions. Good for beginners.
Easy to follow instructions.......2007-09-05
I had very little previous knowledge about knitting. This book proved to be of tremendous help. Lovely humor and very easy to follow instructions.
Excited about Starting.......2007-08-13
One Friday I had the overwhelming need to learn to knit; go figure!?! The title intrigued me and the repeated praise of others convinced me. I adore this book because Debbie was an adult when she perfected her knit, which gave me hope for myself. Debbie's style of writing makes me feel as if she is sitting across from me casually answering my questions and soothing my concerns. I said it before and I really mean it,I adore this book!!
Love It!.......2007-06-27
I checked this book out of the library initially. When I found myself resisting returning it, even when others were waiting for it, I figured it was time to buy. This is a great resource for a beginner like me and contains at least 10 projects I'd like to make.

Fantastic Ideas.......2007-06-12
GREAT book! Lots of ideas, easy to implement with super results. I have used this both at home with my son and in my high school classroom!
Excellent advice.......2007-05-29
Donna Goldberg gives good insight of the disorganized student. She offers solutions that are practical and easy to understand.
Review of The Organized Student.......2007-05-21
This book is very helpful. My son has just gotten into high school and has been very disorganized ever since [...]. I had no idea how to help him get organized and this book has some great suggestions and ideas, as well as explaining the phenomenon of an intelligent student being so disorganized that grades and self-esteem suffer. Thanks.
Organize the organizer.......2007-02-04
This book has some helpful hints for helping students to be better organized, but the book itself is poorly organized. It didn't need to be nearly so long. It seemed as if the author felt the need to justify writing the book by fluffing the first chapters with fillers. I was constantly thinking "just get to the point already". Also, some of the comments about going to your child's school to help clean out lockers is just not realistic. Likewise, the recommendations to wait until your child is ready to cooperate are not really helpful. As a teacher, the demands on students today to get organized and stay on track and up-do-date are overwhelming.
Connecting with your child's teacher and forming a partnership is the best way to communicate to the student that we are all in this together, and there really are few alternatives to "getting it together". Patience and gentle but firm prodding are the order of the day most days.
The real nuts and bolts.......2006-09-20
A great find. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't need this book. My [...] year-old saw it on the table and picked it up and found it helpful--though I think it's too dense for most kids. An important feature of the authors method is to have your kids participate in the process which will help cement it. Especially helpful if you have a child entering middle-school where the big changes of multiple schedules, moving classrooms and intense homework take place for the first time.
Book Description
As presented here with "blood, and bone and sinew" (Times Literary Supplement), the story of Caravaggio is the story of a wild and tempestuous life that was a provocation to a culture in a state of siege. The end of the sixteenth century was marked by the Inquisition and Counter-Reformation, a background of ideological war against which, despite all odds, brilliant feats of art and science were achieved. No artist captured the dark, violent spirit of the time better than Caravaggio, variously known as Marisi, Moriggia, Merigi, and sometimes, simply M.As art critic Robert Hughes has said, "There was art before him and art after him, and they were not the same."AUTHORBIO: PETER ROBB was born in Australia and has lived in Naples and Southern Italy for most of the past two decades. His first book, Midnight in Sicily, was a New York Times Notable Book and a New York Public Library Book of the Year.REVIEW: "It is clear that Caravaggio is Robb's oyster, and he makes him ours too." (The Boston Globe)REVIEW: "Partisan, sharply personal, and well worth reading." (The Wall Street Journal)REVIEW: "His biography....comes across almost like an eyewitness account. His commentaries on the paintings convey a kind of informed passion in confrontation with genius....his account achieves both intimacy and vibrancy because of the richness of layering, its nonstop accumulation of analyzed detail." (Richard Bernstein, New York Times)REVIEW: "Robb's ambitions are lofty and, plainly put, it is hard not to be seduced by his prose." (The Washington Post)REVIEW: "Passionate, perceptive....[Robb] succeeds brilliantly in bringing to life one of the handful of figures in art history whose genius blazed so brightly that it illuminated an entire age and changed forever the course of European art." (The Baltimore Sun)REVIEW: "That rarest of hybrids, a cerebral thrill ride, and its indulgences are more than balanced by the brilliance of insight." (The Village Voice)REVIEW: "A feast of art appreciation, storytelling, and witty speculation." (Bookpage)REVIEW: "Just as Caravaggio took art to the edge, Robb takes biography there." (Publishers Weekly)
Customer Reviews:
a very impressive book.......2007-09-03
Even though the historical part of the book seems to be disputable, the part devoted to M.'s paintings is extremely well written. The broad public needs more books like this one. The book was written with skill and true passion.
Is the world flat ?.......2006-09-29
It might have appeared so in Carravagio's day but like Robb, he was not intimidated by so called dusty 'scholars' and 'fusspots'. Carravagio's 'style' and his rejection of the establishment are what make his work so interesting today. There is no doubt Carravagio's work was wildly controversial in his time. Robb dissects the evidence, such as it is, and invites conclusions in a direct manner from the reader. The fact that Robb's book has drawn a response from `noted historians', 'grammar nerds' and other sundry 'desk polishers' is a credit to the work. Carravagio, if he were around today might give a wry twinkle of a smile to one of his subjects.
Robb includes well-selected and compelling illustrations in the book to aid his view. He does not mess around. Robb goes straight for the aorta of the reader. Carravaggio wasn't popular with his recklessness and Robb has a get there quick style that leaves the scholars and critics in his dust.
Hitler said, " A man with no sense of history is a man with no ears". Robb has a sense of history in spades. So called 'historians' and flat-earthers will no doubt continue to criticise, like the Vatican in Carravaggio's day. Gallileo had imagination, so does Robb. The earth was not flat. Gallileo was right. The Vatican and its legions of scholars, scribes and `dust collectors' were wrong. Read the book. Ignore the pseudo intellectuals. *****
A Masterpiece.
Pure Imagination.......2006-01-08
As Amazon organizes reviews by date, the sole review (writen by noted Caravaggio scholar David Stone) which attacks this book for its unscholarly tendency to unashamedly make things up is buried deep on the last page. Therefore, I thought I'd add another to make this fact a little more visible to the casual shopper. A few others have noted the appalling grammar and syntax, but the real crime is the baselessness of Robb's conclusions. Does no one care about evidence any more? Do none of you who loved this book find anything wrong with Robb's practice of examining complex, vague, and contradictory sources, choosing the most dramatic answer possible, and presenting it as an irrefutable truth? Caravaggio was an unconventional, brilliant man who lived a wild and crazy life--stick with the evidence and you'll still be amazed.
A Superlative Read!.......2005-09-26
This book has it all - erudition, polemics, irreverence, controversy, intrigue, irony, eroticism, romance, depravity... the list is endless! Meticulously researched and annotated, soundly argued and reasoned, Mr. Robb is a gracious champion to the very complex artist who is historically reduced to a one-dimensional churl who happened to have a way with a paint-brush.
Caravaggio was a pioneer (a very dangerous occupation during the counter-reformation), - the manner in which he approached his subjects, the lighting (or relative lack there-of), his refusal to sketch out a work before painting it, his perspective, his "earthy" handling of religious themes; these approaches became both his claim to fame, and his downfall. A downfall facilitated by jealous contemporaries, greedy art collectors, and Caravaggio's own sexual and social indiscretions.
Not a light read by any means - make sure your thinking cap is well positioned, and your seat belt is tightly fashioned - you're in for one hell of a ride!
A thrilling story and a great art book.......2003-01-11
Peter Robb has managed to achieve a miraculous symphony in this long (500 + pages) book: It's a biography, a detective story (little is known about Caravaggio's life), a social history of Rome, and a definitive art book. As a result, you can read this book on many levels. I read it first as a "beach book" for the story, and then again, when I took a vacation to Rome and tried to see as many of his remaining paintings as I could.
Robb explains how Caravaggio was a breakthrough painter in his use of light, and in his use of recognizable local models (almost all of whom Robb has been able to identify) to express the religious art of the day. Mannerism died at his hands.
Moreover, Peter Robb builds a credible portrait of Caravaggio's brittle personality--it's easy to see why people were out to kill him. At first I thought the title "M" was a little contrived, but by the end of the book, I realized that it's cipher for the real man behind the familiar name. (Calling someone "Caravaggio" after the town is like giving someone the nickname "Boston").
The reproductions are carefully chosen and richly presented. You'll enjoy reading--and re-reading--this wonderful book.
