Book Description
Life on the Outside tells the story of Elaine Bartlett, who spent sixteen years in Bedford Hills prison for selling cocaine--a first offense--under New York's Rockefeller drug laws. The book opens on the morning of January 26, 2000, when Bartlett is set free and returns to New York City. At 42, she has virtually nothing: no money, no job, no real home. All she does have is a large and troubled family, including four children, who live in a decrepit housing project on the Lower East Side. "I left one prison to come home to another," Elaine says. Over the next months, she clashes with her daughters, hunts for a job, visits her son and husband in prison, negotiates the rules of parole, and campaigns for the repeal of the laws that led to her long prison term. Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam Records, says: "At a time when the prison-industrial complex is destroying African American families and neighborhoods, Elaine Bartlett is more than a survivor: she is a heroine. The future of our communities depends on women like her."

The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13
Unlike most prison stories which chronicle the lives of men caught in the system, Life on the Outside, sketches the life of Elaine Bartlett, a mother of four and victim of the Rockefeller Drug Laws. Jennifer Gonnerman, a Village Voice staff writer, draws an amazing picture of the hardships and suffering women face when they try to weave their way back into society after a long prison term without any training or support. Unmatched by any other book, Life on the Outside will give readers a glimpse of the multi-generational effect prison terms have on families.
Learned a lot from this book...........2007-02-03
I feel as though I've now had an intimate look at life in the ghetto. This story of Elaine Bartlett is written with honesty and has no happy ending. It is a story of Rockefeller's ridiculous drug laws and the impact they had on one family. If you're looking for justice, you won't find it here. Elaine and her family have had lives of struggle, poverty, anger, crime, prison, drug addiction, etc. Not pretty. It is a book every American should read. It is my hope (and I didn't see any mention of this in the book) that the author, Jennifer Gonnerman, has given a percentage of the profits from this book to Elaine Bartlett. Without her, there would be no story. I want to thank Jennifer Gonnerman for writing this book. I hope Elaine has decorated her apartment and has some extra money stashed away in a safe place.
Life on the Outside, Prison Odyssey of Elaine Bartlett.......2006-08-04
An important book. Several years ago, I read a lengthy rave review about this book in "The New York Times" and bought it. It's about "breaking the cycle" of imprisonment and poverty in families. At a time when governments do little other than epitomize Benjamin Franklin's definition of insanity ("doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results") this book makes clear why we should tell stakeholders to go to hell and do something other than Nixon-Bush's "tough on crime," "punish don't rehabilitate," etc. Buy it five copies at a time, read it, and pass it on (please)!!
Outraged Was My First Thought.......2006-01-24
I was outraged that a first time offense could land this mother in prison for 15 to life is that justice No matter fact Hell to the No. Are drugs bad in the community well of course Yes. Although what she did was wrong by carrying those drugs to Albany she and her children should not have had to suffer sixteen years without her even five years would have been stiff but sufficient. I read one reviewer state that she was committing welfare fraud by working under the table and a host of other things anyway. But different people look at things differently you see I was born where Elaine was born and when our mothers went out and worked under the table it was called survival. When young white teens are allowed to work under the table it is called "teaching them responsibility" People kill me how they are so ready to judge. Anyway I once again will reiterate that in no way do I agree with her carrying any drugs because my mother was addicted to drugs which royally screwed up my family BUT before anyone judges Elaine let's look at this a young mother with four children working on the side is very vunerable to be lured into the situation she was lured into by George Deets. And to think good people allowed this to happen and are still allowing this to happen cause' why is Nathan still sitting in prison for four ounces worth of cocaine.
To the Author I applaud you for writing Elaine's story with DIGNITY.
Prisoner Reentry from a Personal Perspective.......2006-01-03
Expertly crafted by Jennifer Gonnerman, this biography traces the life of Elaine Bartlett, a resident of a housing project in East Harlem, who at a young age was arrested for selling a small qualtity of cocaine to an undercover police officer in 1983. She was subsequently sentenced to serve 20-years-to-life under the draconian Rockefeller drug laws. From 1984 until she received executive clemency from Governor George Pataki, Bartlett spend the next 16 years in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, where she initially experienced some adjustment problems before becoming a model prisoner. Following her release on parole in 2000, Bartlett returned to a dysfunctional and stressful life and to a world that had undergone substantial changes.
While she availed herself of some educational and self-improvement programs during her period of incarceration, Bartlett was ill-equipped to deal with the complexities of urban life upon her release. Saddled with a questionable value system, Bartlett experienced difficulty in finding suitable employment, managing her limited financial resources, maneuvering the social service system, avoiding persons with criminal records, reestablishing herself as the mother of her children, and providing some semblance of order to her chronically troubled family. Were it not for a few responsible friends, a forgiving employer, and an understanding parole officer, she would have likely found her way back into prison.
Despite her personal limitations and the challenges she faced, Bartlett survived her period of parole supervision and was discharged in 2003. According to the author, Bartlett celebrated her release from parole "by going to the apartment of a former coworker and smoking weed."
Life on the Outside is a remarkable book in that the author has been successful in "getting inside the head" of her subject and, in doing so, she has provided an honest, revealing, and instructive case study into the life of an offender.
This is a well-researched book on post-incarceration issues, and it could easily serve as a supplemental text for a college course dealing with correctional policy.

Tricks of the Trade: From Best Intentions to Best in Show, Revised Edition.......2007-08-26
Good book, easy to read with plenty to learn for the beginner to the more advanced handler. This will be a book that I will read again, there is so much to get out of it that I expect to continue to pick up more each time I read it.
Wow!!! .......2007-05-13
If you're interested in breeding quality dogs, you need this book!! This is a fantasic resource which includes everything from making unbiased decisions regarding your own litter right up to the Best In Show ring. Pat writes with an easy to read and often humerous style. I was surprised at how much I learnt from this book. I lent it to friends who all got a lot out of it. It's packed with " Tricks of the trade" (things that no one will ever tell you) and so much more. Again if you plan on breeding or even buying a show dog- read this first!!
Great for all dog people!.......2007-04-23
i love this book. it is easy to read and has so much information. i have already read it twice in less than 3 weeks! i learn something new everytime i pick it up. it is not a long book describing how a dog show works; this book teaches you about the dog you are showing in the ring. lots of little bits of tips throughout the book as well. i highly recommend this book to breeders or exhibitors working with dogs. you will not be sorry for purchasing!
Great Book!.......2007-03-13
I have bought just about every "How-to" show dog book out there, and this would be the only one that I would recommend. It is by far the best book of its kind on the market. I agree with the previous reviewer as well--it's not just for show people. There is a great deal of information that is valuable for any dog owner. All of my other books went straight to the bookshelf and stayed there. This one is sitting on my kitchen counter, and I have gone back to it time after time.
Packed Full of Information and Wisdom.......2007-02-07
All dog owners should read this book, it's not just for show dog folks! Great solutions, suggestions, and explanations for common issues. The combined years of experience from the authors provide the reader direct access to today's experts. Easy to read and very informative.

Must Have.......2003-10-15
You must get this book. I've met Pat Hastings in person and if her book blows you away when you read it, when you meet her, she'll knock your socks off. I've never met anyone as intelligent about dogs and structure as Pat. She knows it all, though she doesn't quite think so. This is an easy to understand book and you'll wonder how you ever got along without it when you're done. It will all become clear after you read this and the K-9 Structure book she recommends and paid to have reprinted!
Great Book!.......2003-04-13
I was very pleased with the "tricks" supplied in this book. I have raised and shown dogs for over 20 years and some of the ideas in this book cured problems that nobody else could. The book was written as a ready reference for exhibitors and I found it to be very informative. The rating would be higher if the author had included information on how to obtain some of the suggested items such as the whitener for coats, which I could not find at any store in my area. Overall, however, it was filled with useful and quick fixes to frequent problems!
DogRead book of the month.......2001-10-31
This book was chose to be on the prestigious 'DogRead' as a book selection of the month. We only do 12 books a year and this was NOVEMBER 2000. The author comes on line for the whole month to answer questions on the book. It was very well received by our 3000 member email group. The author was very knowledgeable and easy to understand even though also very in depth.

An inspiring little treasure........2000-10-19
Bonsai Miniatures offers a refreshing alternative to the fairly large bonsai that often require two people to move them and an equally large porch or patio on which to grow them. The miniature bonsai (some as small as two inches in height) depicted in Zeko Nakamura's book open a whole world of possibility to those budding bonsai aficionados who have only a small deck on which to grow plants and who don't want to launch into a major undertaking.
Aside from creating miniature bonsai out of the standard bonsai plants such as cypress and Japanese maple, Nakamura suggests looking at other possibilities: a common houseplant, a garden perennial or even a dandelion. In this 62-page book, just enough information is provided to successfully create miniature bonsai, yet without overwhelming the reader with a lot of technical detail; the diagrams are equally sufficient. Finally, the numerous color photos (31 in all) found throughout serve as inspiration

Sharing Nine Secrets to Ensuring a Happy Life.......2007-09-17
HOW WE CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY dispels the myth that we have emotional set points and are stuck with whatever level of satisfaction we normally feel, in lives primarily influenced by luck of the draw.
Authors Foster and Hicks traveled the world to interview the happiest people referred to them in each town they visited, discovering that the happiest people in the world have made nine life choices in common. Significantly, it became clear that when these nine principles are adopted, they radically improve peoples' happiness in life regardless of what is going on around them.
The realizations in HOW WE CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY are so clearly stated with abundant examples of people who are merely cheerful, or in denial, rather than genuninely happy that their nine principles become more clearly outlined.
The big idea here is that happiness is a choice, or more precisely a series of choices, and when we choose to move our lives toward happiness by making changes to ourselves from the inside out, we can experience tremendous improvements in feelings of increased inner joy, peace and health.
Our health and wellbeing lies in our happiness... and when we realize that our happiness is a new way of life, this book becomes a much-needed guide to finding out just how good life can be. I give this book my highest recommendation.
best book read in years.......2007-08-01
please read this book and do the exercies! it will help you and make our world a better place for everyone to live in. thank you.
Reality.......2007-04-09
Not some made up set of rules. The research in this book is thoughtful and can be applied. Easily.
Worse than useless........2007-01-16
This half-truth of a book is fundamentally flawed -- and its flaws are such that they exacerbate the difficulties and problems that people who are attempting to deal with unhappiness and become more happy must deal with. Its formula, simply put, does not work. What's worse is that when the authors' suppositions about how to make oneself happy fail, their recourse is to blame the victim ... an activity that serves only to make bad situations worse for the people who would be most inclined to look to this book for assistance. In short, this book is worse than useless. It fails in its stated goals and, in failing, inflicts more harm than good to those it purports to help.
Wow! I Love This Book!.......2006-09-24
What a wonderfully enriching book that gives us nine reasons why people are happy. Brought a wonderfully certain sense of clarity to an elusive dream for most but a core life principle for the lucky few. I would recommend this book to anyone but especially those who need a sunny book for a rainy day.

The portrait of a human being who represents the ambiguity of the 1970s. Fuentes reflects the life and death of the actress Diana Soren, so beatiful yet so lonely and so strong yet so weak.
Customer Reviews:
