A Great Book.......2003-01-17
I'll keep this short: It is a great book, one I expect to be very helpful to me in the future. (Christians: Beware of reviews of Christian books by people who are not Christians. They are entitled to their opinions, but they cannot possibly be objective.)
Blasephemous.......2002-03-14
The book slurs and blasephems the divine name of G/D. I found it offensive and a waste of money and paper.

When Mark Arax was 15, his father, a Fresno, California, bar owner, was killed by two gunmen in what appeared to be "a hit." Arax became a journalist in order to acquire the skills he needed, and then 20 years later returned to Fresno to ferret out the truth about his father's murder. His book is a detailed and absorbing account of multiple generations of his Armenian family and of his quest to come to terms not only with his father's death and life, but also with his own obsession with the case. As the Los Angeles Times writes, "Almost every American town harbors some brutal secret, but few produce writers like Mark Arax with both the courage and artistic talent needed to coax the story out and shape it into fine literature. Of course, Arax had an extra incentive: the footsteps he followed ran straight through his own family, straight through his own heart."
Book Description
On January 2, 1972, Mark Arax's childhood came to a sudden, explosive end when his father was shot to death at his nightclub in Fresno, California. It was one of the most sensational murders in California's heartland, and it was never solved.
Mark, only fifteen years old at the time, was left with a legacy of questions: Were the rumors about his father true? Had he led a double life? Was he killed because of his dealings with the underworld?
Mark Arax, an award-winning journalist at the Los Angeles Times, now writes a searing, intensely personal account of his twenty-two-year search for answers about his father's life and death, and his own identity.
As the oldest child, Mark was thrust into the role of patriarch. His quest for answers began in high school, when he sought out his father's father, an Armenian immigrant. His grandfather opened a window into an old country world full of promise and heartbreak -- and four generations of eccentric family members.
Two decades later, Mark uprooted his wife and baby and returned to Fresno under an assumed name to try and determine who killed his father and why. Fearing for his own life, he discovers his father was murdered just before he was going to make a startling disclosure.
More than a true-life murder mystery, more than an exploration of family and culture, In My Father's Name is the poignant story of one man's remarkable journey as he uncovers long-hidden secrets about his father, his family, his heritage, and the town he once called home.

Valley boy returns to the scene.......2007-06-10
This is a wonderful book about the Armenian community in Fresno, a search by an adult newspaperman into the circumstances of his father's unsolved murder, and policital corruption in the 70's. Mark Arax also co-authored a biography of a politically powerful large scale cotton farmer named Boswell located near Hanford, where I grew up. Highly recommended.

A Father's Murder Leads to an Authentic Identity.......2005-05-24
Mark Arax has written a superb novel chronicling his zealous search for the
identity of the men who gunned down his father in his own bar in Fresno
back in 1972 when Mark was 15. The gripping story takes us from Fresno to LA
to NY to Mexico and Anatolia, the Ottoman empire, 1915, San Francisco, and
back to Fresno to circle around the little city of corruption and crime,
related to the pernicious drug trade. Armenia, a nation of people erased
from its ancestral homeland, submitted to genocide by the Turks
and dispersed in this American century, to America which promised freedom
and opportunity, delivered new strife, leading to new crises.
This epic saga tells of three generations of Arax family members overcoming
impossible odds to finally make a decent home for themselves in Fresno only
to have it shattered by a cold blooded murder on a Sunday evening in a
shady bar just before Mark's dad was to have made a public announcement,
naming names, letting the public know what went on in city hall and at
police headquarters. He was executed Mafia style with a son left in its
wake holding on to a bag of questions and a burning desire to get some
answers.
And yet, this state is endemic to the Armenian existence in its diaspora.
The resonances between Mark Arax's saga and that of every post-genocide
Armenian are loud and clear. Why were over a million of their forefathers
so brutally and systematically slaughtered like cattle at the turn of this
century? Why was the life of every Armenian in the Ottoman empire so cheap
and worthless? What had Armenians done to deserve the racist wrath of
Turks, Kurds and other nomadic bands of brigands in the Anatolian plains,
the ancestral homeland of all Armenians? Why do Turks today not admit what
is so plainly true? Why the denial and historical revisionism? How are
dignity and justice to be restored when nations place economic or strategic
considerations before the demands of historical truths? How can
democracies and free nations join in the Turkish lie that nothing happened
in 1915, it was just war, things like that happen all the time, let bygones
be bygones...?
Mark Arax would not stop asking his haunting questions either. His father
was murdered. The police never even tried to solve the case. Mark would
do his damnedest to get to the bottom of it himself, and he would do it at
any cost. Mark Arax was rewarded for his quixotic aspirations by much more
than he could have imagined. While the minutest details of his father's
murder are still unresolved, what Mark discovered was more precious and
more lasting than the particulars of a case of a Fresno drug mob and city
hall -- about to be exposed -- hit. Mark Arax found the true identity of
his people, the Armenians in the Californian diaspora, and their struggle
to preserve their traditions and rich heritage. Through all this, Mark
fathered himself to become a gifted professional journalist, a responsible
father and husband and a conscientious citizen. The long and persistent
journey that he took makes for a great read. The story is compelling and
gripping, yet it is filled with true human drama spanning three
generations. His is not a murder mystery with bought off politicians all
the way to Sacramento, with its rich source of drugs supplied from Mexico.
No, that is only part of the story. His is not the chronicling of how the
Hell's Angels distributed marijuana to all points north and south in the
60s and 70s, with the marijuana being air-dropped into the vineyards of
Fresno. No, that is only part of the story. His is not the story of a
"crazy" grandfather who was a businessman who held fond attachment to
communist ideology, who had big dreams and bombastic demeanor and yet
failed as many times as not in all his business ventures. His uncles,
great uncles and his own struggle with American or Armenian identity all
mix in to produce a unique story of love and redemption. A boy who has to
be the rudder in a cracked up society, a disintegrating yet ever expanding
town and a broken home. What Mark Arax achieves with his own life is a
courageous feat. To defeat the forces of decadence that took his father
away by rejecting that underworld and that easy life. To enter the ranks
of the successful the hard way, by dedication, talent, sweat and toil.
Ironically, Mark might very well have ended up a two bit hood himself and a
cheap hustler hanging around his dad's bar or the golf club, dealing,
racketeering and begging for trouble. Instead, his father's loss jolted
him into a state of permanent revulsion at that seedy world he was just
beginning to get comfortable in at the age of 15. By correctly identifying
it as the prime seducer who claimed his father, Mark avoided that scene and
kept it away from his family. Instead, by finding his deepest roots he has
been able to set some of his own. Let us hope that his tree flourishes
under that hot central California sun and that his children know their dad
for the American hero on the pages of "In My Father's Name," that he surely
is. Read for yourself and see!
An Amazing Story.......2003-08-26
When I first started this book, I was amazed at the description that Arax gives of Fresno. Being a life-long resident of Fresno, I can imagine everything he describes. Then I read about the corruption that I'd heard about all my life, and see the proof of it all. I was shocked beyond belief.
Then I read about these supposedly upstanding citizens that I've heard about all my life (who has community centers and arena's named after them here in Fresno) and I feel like a veil has been pulled from my eyes.
Mark Arax tells a story of life in a lot of small, and large, cities. The one part of the story I wish would have been included (but it is safer for him NOT to include, being that he is still a resident of Fresno) is not only the corruption of the past, but the corruption of the present as well. He describes how the city of Fresno was built upon corruption, ran in corruption for many years, and hinted to the present day corruption, but had to stop. Hopefully he will write another book about Fresno, and reveal something to everyone.
If you like to read, and you like to be trapped by a book, then I suggest you purchase this book.
Author Connects The Dots For Reader.......2002-07-18
I'm originally from Fresno, California and at the time of this murder, my grandfather, Ted C. Wills Sr., was Mayor of the city. When I picked up this book, I didn't know what to expect. What I found was validation.
For years I struggled with the bits and pieces of recollection I had regarding this period of my youth. Arax's book not only validated my experiences, what I had witnessed, but connected many of the dots regarding other incidences related to my past. The cover ups, illegal activity and silent handshakes were a part of my youth and Arax described this perfectly.
The author's well placed words painted one vivid picture after another about a mystery which is reality based. At the end of the book, the pictures come together as one complete "town" portrait. In doing this, he brilliantly exposed the "dark side" of not only my history, but of a town bent on keeping up appearances, at all costs. Secrets were taken out of the closet and placed squarely on to the laps of the public at large. "If we do not expose our secrets, we are bound to repeat them."
I strongly suggest this book to anyone interested in seeing how organized crime on a local level works. Along with this, I hope that readers will appreciate how the author was able to weave powerful Armenian history with not only his own family of origin, but with the political and criminal drama of a small town.
Very compelling.......2002-04-07
This is a fine exploration that reads like a crime novel. Arax's quest to find out the truth about his father's murder goes further, raising intriguing questions about family secrets and how a father influences a son.

Welcome to Danita's World!.......1998-08-24
Like 'The Dark Card', 'D, My Name Is Danita' expresses the feelings of a young teenage girl, only this book doesn't have a dramatic plot to it. In a way, it does talk about friendship and family. It looks boring when you read the plot and look at the cover, but never judge a book by it's cover! This isn't an excellent book and I must confess that, but it's good!

Best Alzehiemers Book.......2003-02-23
Father Sheehans book is the best I've read. Those of us trying to care for a parent with Alzehiemers can relate to this book and get great comfort from Fathers writing. The book is easy to read and filled with all the emotions we experience trying to cope with this disease. The book is short which is another blessing.Trying to keep up the pace of caregiving while remaining faithful to daily reponsibilities can be overwhelming. This length of the book is perfect. The content is real, spiritual and helpful in countless ways. Many thanks!!!!!!
A touching look into the life of a son, and caretaker.......2000-03-03
Not only is Father Jim a caretaker of the poor and of his people, he is also someone's son. This book, an easy read and heartfelt story, brought tears to my eyes. Something happens when our parents change roles with us that shows us that life really is an unending spiral. No matter what our parents do to us, or how we are treated, their love for us becomes a part of us, and we must all learn to be able to give that back in their time of need. Please read this book and understand what I mean.

The rating for the author if not the book.......2003-09-04
Before I begin this review I should lay my cards on the table. I met Morse Hamilton once and was very close to one of his daughters. I only began to read his work after his death. His work is difficult to find but I enjoy it and have never been disappointed.
If you have never heard of Morse Hamilton you should look into his work. His children's literature is excellent and his young adult literature has a bite to it that, at first, may make you take a step back but will quickly grow on you. I encouage everyone to read his entire body of work making sure not to miss Effie's House, Yellow Blue Bus and Belching Hill. As a history teacher I have found his cultural insite to particular periods of time outstanding. Hamilton was a first rate writer and I have heard a first rate teacher. Both are evident in his work.

A Delightful, Well-Written Story.......2005-03-03
Sixth grader Mitch MacLeod is picked on at school for being small and for having trouble with reading. Even though Philip and Siobhan challenge him about something every day at school, Mitch maintains his sense of humor in this delightful story. However, more challenging problems loom on the horizon. His divorced mother calls Mitch's estranged father "The Creep," which makes him an abstract, unknown shadow in the scheme of things until he suddenly appears on the scene. This realistic account of a kid coming to terms with school bullies and absent fathers will resonate well with middle school students and those of us who remember what it was like not to be part of the "in" crowd when we were in the sixth grade.

What can I say. We have a stray cat that my daughter and I just love. My daughter has been dieing to figure out what sign our cat falls under since we don't know when our cat was born, being she was a stray. I found this book and it has proven itself an amusing and pretty accurate means of deciphiring our little fluff ball's zodiacal causes of behavior. My daughter claims it to be one of her favorite books. Worth every penny spent to see her smile.

Customer Reviews:
pretty damn good.......2007-10-11
This book is amazing!! And unlike what some people are saying, the rest of the book is full of little tips that anyone can use (for example, the top 5 pieces for work and top 5 pieces of statement jewelry everyone should have). This book is a thousand times better than the British version with Trinny and Susannah (who have a weird obsession with wearing dresses over pants and... um... hair accessories that look like mobiles). The only way this book could be better is if they showed like 9 different looks for each body type instead of just 3. stacey and clinton, we need more advice!!
Pay attention to the dissenting reviews!!!.......2007-10-10
I love What Not to Wear, but I was very disappointed in this book, especially after reading the reviews. The In Style or Lucky Manual has much more useful information. While this book has information for all types of bodies for men and women, as well as a must have wardrobe list, it is seriously lacking because there will not be more than three pages that pertain to you. If you can borrow a copy from a friend or library, and then take notes on the tips, then do that - because buying the book is a huge waste of money. The information is so limited that will be of any use to one person that it quite simply is not worth buying.
Dress to Impress!.......2007-10-06
Yes, this book will teach you how to dress to impress. But I also highly recommend another awesome book- How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You Both books are the ultimate beauty resources that are a must have for every woman!
Great Breezy Read, But . . ........2007-09-28
I love Stacy and Clinton's witty banter and usually sane fashion advice on their show, so when this book came out, I was thrilled. It was (and still is) unavailable at my public library, but after two or three read-throughs, I will probably be donating them my copy. The basic concept of the show is repeated here: Three workable looks for a variety of challenging body types are modelled on 26 actual people who are a stunning array of ages and sizes. It was truly amazing to see these 'plain' Janes and Joes transformed by clothing and a little grooming. However, as others have pointed out, 26 bodies doesn't begin to cover the gamut of potential figure problems out there. Clinton & Stacy are unfailingly kind and encouraging, which is refreshing, coming from their backgrounds in the snarky, body-conscious fashion world. But their biases as lifelong New York fashionistas show through in some of their selections--do most women in America need 3-inch metallic heels for day? Is your average American guy really going to wear a Godfather-style topcoat out on the town? Also, I like many readers have more than one major figure problem; what is a girl to do if she is top-heavy, with more than a little in the middle AND has short legs? My pet peeve with this book would have to be Stacy and Clinton each posing in it as a catagory. At 5'7" and a size 4, Stacy is representing the 'Average Curvy' body type. I submit that there isn't much either "Average" or "Curvy" about Stacy, who has scant need of the tips on 'creating a slimming line' in her spread. Please! What does the woman weigh, 115 pounds? Clinton is the men's "Tall" feature. At 6'4" the boy is indeed a tall drink of water, but his looks are essentially Clinton (= sartorial choices for a NYC fashion maven who is a gay man). This is a perfect glossy read for an afternoon, and has some valuable advice but is too bulky to take shopping, and too limited in scope to refer to very often. Borrow this, or share a copy with several friends.
One time read.......2007-09-03
I really liked this book but I wouldn't recommend buying it. I would try and find it at a local book store and look through it, making notes. The sections pertaining to each body type are very short. The most useful information for my type consisted of three whole pages, the rest of the book being useless for me. Once you read "your section" or body type you don't really need the book any more. Just my opinion.

Quite a good book!.......2001-08-06
This is a pretty good book. It has both host and larval plants, and tells which butterflies are attracted to each. The USGS actually has a great web site that you can go even further with in this area. Its a good book though. Unfortunately it doesn't indicate which plants are native to the US versus non-native. Because its so very important to plant native it would have been nice if the author hadd either indicated which were native or just included native plants in the recommendations. Native plants grow and bloom at the time when the butterflies/caterpillars are ready to take advantage of them. Non-native plants are timed for the insects in their natural area (usually Japan/china). In any case, its a good book that will certainly peak your interest in butterflies and serve as a good guide for setting up that garden
The best butterfly gardening book.......1999-08-09
This wonderful book provides everything you need know to plan & maintain a beautiful garden designed to attract butterflies. Information on conservation, photography & history of butterfly gardening is included.
Charts and diagrams present the information most effectively. Two tables list nectar sources for adult butterflies & larval host plants. Below each plant the butterflies that use it are listed.
There are 5 complete garden plans tailored to different regions of the country, with tips on design, plant selection, water & pest control. Regional butterfly books and contact information for enthusiasts are also listed.
The last section is the best. It contains beautiful photographs of over 50 different butterflies. The range, habitat and favorite plants are given for each species. I love these beautiful gardens with the butterfly bonus.

Philip Van Munching sounds like a pretty cool dad. True, he'd rather his daughters steer clear of drugs and alcohol and avoid having sex until after he's dead, but he's well aware of the fact that they're living in the real world. In Boys Will Put You on a Pedestal (so they can look up your skirt), this father of two offers practical advice to teenage girls in a series of fresh and funny chapters on everything from Fate to Faith to Boyfriends, The Internet, and How to be Happy. Consider what he has to say about Tattoos: "If you ever seriously think about getting one do yourself a favor first. Go to the drawer where you keep your T-shirts and take a good look at them. What's on them? Got any designer names or funny sayings? Or do you have T-shirts with pictures of cartoon animals? Wait, of course you don't: you had the animal T-shirts a few years ago, but you've gotten rid of them. You outgrew them." To further prove his point, he suggests checking out "your folks' old high school yearbooks" for more evidence that what's cool today won't be forever. One thing his girls can likely count on to remain constant, however, is their dad's obvious love and respect for them, as Van Munching appears infinitely curious about their current lives and the challenges they will face in the future. -Patrick Jennings.

Life can be pretty tricky when you're a teenage girl.
New things matter: Clothes. Parties. Boys. Suddenly being liked and being popular don't mean the same thing. Your parents get completely bizarre when the subject of dating comes up. A friend you've had forever stabs you in the back for no good reason. Everybody you know seems to feel free to comment on your constantly changing body. Drugs and alcohol go from being what you see "bad" kids doing on television shows to what you see your friends doing when no adults are around. How are you supposed to deal?
Since life doesn't come with a set of instructions, it helps to turn to people who have been through the stuff that you're facing. Even parents can help. (Really!) In Boys Will Put You on a Pedestal (so they can look up your skirt), former teenage boy -- and current dad of two daughters -- Philip Van Munching helps guide you through some of life's most confusing topics. From Beauty to Grief, from Sex to Fate, Van Munching covers the things you most want to know about and, in his wise, warm, and funny way, offers advice on how you can become the young woman you most want to be.

Dads, talk to your daughters...........2007-07-10
This is pathetic. Cute. Funny. But should never be a substitute for developing and nurturing a relationship with your daughter. As 1 of 4 girls growing up and the mother of 2 daughters, I know what a girl needs: open communication with her father; unconditional love and support; and the self confidence it takes to judge each situation rationally and self assuredly. Dad, if you have to give your daughter this book to read so she knows what to do when the S-word becomes an issue, then you're NOT doing your job as a parent.
Not to mention that my son (whose older sisters, mother and father certainly made sure he respected girls!) would be totally insulted to know that any one would think he is only interested in the opposite sex so that he can get take advantage of her?? He and his college buddies think girls are great just because they are. And once he's read it, I'm sure he'll be happy to share his opinion!
This book is pretty much for silly parents who aren't comfortable raising their kids. Or for woman who are NOT ok with making sound judgments about men and simply saying, 'no, thanks'. It is certainly not appropriate as a 'advise handbook' for young girls.
I read it to my 2 1/2 year old~!.......2007-01-26
Although my daughter doesn't quite appreciate nor understand it, I enjoy reading this simple yet touching book. Yes, most of it is common sense, but not everyone has the mind to write a book of sound advice for their kids.
A must read!.......2006-12-08
Funny, yet interesting. It opens up lots of topics for discussion with my daughter. Really a must read.
Good book for pre-teen and teenage girls.......2006-11-03
My daughter really enjoyed reading this book. He helps young girls to see that they are valuable and important and should examine what boys are thinking and saying to them carefully. Although it's nice to feel boys find you attractive, he helps them understand in a really clean way why its more important to feel attractive from the inside out. It is a book that can help your daughter feel stronger about herself and her place in the world of dating and boys. It is probably more helpful for older girls but my preteen daughter got a lot out of it. I will save this one for her to read again when she is a little older becaue the advice will still apply. Overall, it's a good book because its says what most parents would like their daughters to hear if they could just get them to really listen--it's so much nicer when you have a nice, funny book to help you.
Funny! Great! I LOVE it!.......2006-10-15
Okay, I just turned thirteen. So for my birthday, I get to go to B&N. (I'm a book worm) As I'm looking through the teens area, I notice this book. Ah, what the heck, couldn't hurt to take a peek, Right? Wrong. Hurt very much. That is to say that I was Laughing so hard, I was sure my sides were going to split. My dad is a major Worry Wort. I understand why he worrys, though. This book is just like my dad, only much funnier. And my dad is pretty funny. So this book is great. I highly recomend this for teen girls. No I'm not saying you have probs, but if for nothing else, It's a funny book. The things he talks about in the book ARE important, and it is important to wipe the tears out of your eyes so you could read it. My mom was busting up and nodding her head at the same time. My dad aproves of it as well. My sis is eight, and I'll give it to her when I'm done with it. So it's good for every one. I don't think boys will like it very much, though...
Book Description
Nominated for the Pulizter Prize, "the definitive biography of Arshile Gorky--lucid, persuasive, intimate and refreshingly clear-eyed" (Andrew Solomon, The New York Times Book Review)
Born in Turkey around 1900, Vosdanik Adoian escaped the massacres of Armenians in 1915 only to watch his mother die of starvation and his family scatter in their flight from the Turks. Arriving in America in 1920, Adoian invented the pseudonym Arshile Gorky-and obliterated his past. Claiming to be a distant cousin of the novelist Maxim Gorky, he found work as an art teacher and undertook a program of rigorous study, schooling himself in the modern painters he most admired, especially Cézanne and Picasso. By the early forties, Gorky had entered his most fruitful period and developed the style that is seen as the link between European modernism and American abstract expressionism. His masterpieces influenced the great generation of American painters in the late forties, even as Gorky faced a series of personal catastrophes: a studio fire, cancer, and a car accident that temporarily paralyzed his painting arm. Further demoralized by the dissolution of his seven-year marriage, Gorky hanged himself in 1948.
A sympathetic, sensitive account of artistic and personal triumph as well as tragedy, Hayden Herrera's biography is the first to interpret Gorky's work in depth. The result of more than three decades of scholarship-and a lifelong engagement with Gorky's paintings-Arshile Gorky traces the progress from apprentice to master of the man André Breton called "the most important painter in American history."

Gorky comes alive.......2003-11-18
I became interested in Arshil Gorky after watching, "Ararat," Atom Egoyan's masterful film about the Armenian holocaust. I knew nothing about his art or his place in the annals of art history. Hayden Herrera does a wonderful job giving us a portrait of a troubled eccentric who is also a genius. In particular, she does a terrific job showing his complicated relationship with his homeland. His wife didn't learn until after Gorky was dead that he was Armenian. He told her he was Russian. Herrera also does a good job of interpreting his art, helping the reader make sense of his semi-abstractions. The book includes more than one hundred prints of his artwork and that helps show his artistic journey.
The book is less successful in providing a look at the milieu of New York City art world. There is much discussion in a summary way about the conflicted role Gorky held in relationship to the surrealists but I didn't get a good sense of who the surrealists were and how they interacted with Gorky. Nor are we sure of how Gorky interacted with the abstract expressionists. Some of this failing maybe intentional as Herrera focuses on Gorky's marriage in the nineteen forties and quotes extensively from his wife's letters. Herrera may feel that her job is to help us understand the man through the most significant relationship in his life rather than by focusing his relationship with his peers.
Despite these failings, I think this biography provides an extremely vivid portrait of Gorky the man and the artist. Although his life was often hard and he died relatively young (at age 48), Gorky emerges from these pages a glorious artist who created art that was both self-consciously derivative and highly original. Go figure!
A Fitting Successor.......2003-07-23
This book is a fitting successor to Frida. Both books tell the story of tragic lives made triumphant through art. Both brilliantly evoke their respective art worlds in the first half of the last century. They also evoke the tumultuous political, economic, and social world of the times. The writing is graceful and clear. Herrera talks about paintings, realistic and abstract, with believablity and intelligence. The great empathy she shows for her subjects also illumines the aesthetic discussions. This is an heroic story of an artist overwhelmed by circumstance. Herrera's understanding of how experience molds character, how character lies at the foundation of art, her restraint and eye for significance, her effortless prose, make this as fine a biography as Frida. Both artists are lucky to have found such a biographer!
