5 out of 5 stars Great book for a weekend trip.......2006-03-12

I bought this book before I read the reviews, and I'm glad I did. The Hudson River Valley is expensive. That's why no cheap lodgings are in the book. We stayed at the Peekskill Inn and found it very affordable as well as charming. The book is small enough for an easy carry - as befits a weekend tripper. It's nicely divided into possible weekend trips so the reader can choose which area fits their mood. Each area gets a thorough review of what it has to offer - not just food, lodging, cultural events, but an understanding of where the area has been and what it has to offer the traveler. The icing on the cake is that the book is fun to read, e.g. "Woodstock feels like an unmade bed - comfortable but disheveled."

    2 out of 5 stars not a primary guide.......2005-11-03

I am a Lonely Planet enthusiast and usually use them as my main source during trips and collect them for armchair reading. I saw this and picked it up since I live near the area and have not ventured there in a long time.

This book should only be purchased if you already have the Moon Handbook to New York. I just got the Moon after using this and another guide on previous trips and I feel foolish.

First of all, the money you save by buying this little diary may very well be spent anyway since Ms. Williams doesn't seem to have any interest in anything but high end B&Bs, so if you are on a budget and don't mind a clean but boring room there are no listings, that's none: zero. I found places like this but at random, and almost stayed in a dangerous area because I knew of no alternatives. Moon lists all acceptable motels and B&Bs and lets you decide what you want and how much dough you have.

Second, Ms. Williams likes cool coffee shops, eatieries, shops, but doesn't seem too keen on turning out much copy on historical and cultural sights, so there is precious little coverage. Moon's background info is superior and again, they list all the options and let you decide. Moon New York has more overall info on Hudson Valley despite the fact that it covers the rest of the state as well, and if your car can go over 40 mph I'm sure there's something in a neighboring area that suit your tastes.

And I know LP has other regional guides, but would it kill them to throw in more coverage of the Catskills? We're not talking about Miami to Greenland here, just what's within a two hour drive.

3 out of 5 stars Moderately helpful but a bit thin on details.......2004-08-20

I just returned from a trip to the Hudson River Valley using this book as my primary guide. WIlliams' style was entertaining, and her restaurant advice terrific when it came to The Calico Restaurant in Rhinebeck (we had a fabulous meal) but important details were neglected.

WIlliams' accurately described the town of Hudson, with the town center choc-a-bloc full of antique shops, surrounded by urban decay. With a love of antiques, I planned a trip to Hudson to for an extensive 'tique crawl only to discover 99% of the shops are open ONLY Friday-Sunday. Hudson being far north of my base, the travel time ate much of the day making a last minute change of plans a real challenge.

Likewise, she neglected to mention in any detail the Institute for Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, which is a fascinating place with an excellent perennial garden and very pleasant, helpful and knowlegable staff. Fortunately, we stumbled onto this place by accident, but it was a trip highlight.

Short shrift was similarly given to the many wineries in the area, merely mentioning their existence but with few details.

The maps were helpful, and as I mentioned earlier, our lunch in Rhinebeck at the Calico Restaurant was divine so she gets credit for that. Otherwise, think of this book as a basic intro only and plan on doing much more research before you depart for the Hudson River Valley.

5 out of 5 stars Running With Bonnie & Clyde: The Ten Fast Years of Ralph Fults.......2007-08-15

A must read for anyone interested in Bonnie and Clyde, Ray Hamilton, Joe Palmer or about American crime in the 1930's. A well written review of an amazing life, offering a new angle on the story of the infamous Barrow Gang and the long term results of the 1934 Eastham Camp 1 breakout. A great book that takes you on a journey that you can see being played out before you. Buy it, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Most factual book as far as research........2007-04-10

I know this for a fact by the author. My dad, Ralph Fults is who the book is about. John Neal Phillips did not just take my dad's word on the events in the book, he interviewed many people to back up the details of each story. If you want to encourage a young person, who thinks they cannot turn their life around, please give this book to them. It will be a great encouragement to them. If my dad can turn his life around, anyone can.

      5 out of 5 stars A very informative book.......2006-08-09

A very thorough book on Bonnie and Clyde. More in-depth than others I've read.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for Bonnie and Clyde fans.......2006-06-26

Mr. Phillips is currently considered the foremost authority on Bonnie and Clyde, and for good reason. He is also the editor of Blanche Barrow's recently published memoirs (GREAT). I enjoyed the detail included in this book. His premise is that Clyde was driven in his life of crime by his desire to raid Eastham Prison - one of the worst prisons in Texas. As an historian myself and huge Bonnie and Clyde fan, I would have to say that the raid on Eastham was certainly a part of Clyde Barrow's larger plan (if indeed he had one), but not the sole driving factor. I also appreciate the fact that Mr. Phillips was able to interview Ralph Fults face-to-face, but Mr. Fults seemed to be a bit-part player in the story of Bonnie and Clyde. All in all this book was worth the read - the research is incredible and many former publications' myths and mistakes are straightened out.

5 out of 5 stars Ralph Fults was my friend.......2005-07-03

I knew and worked with Ralph Fults at Buckner Children's Home in Dallas in the 1960s. He rarely volunteered stories, but was always ready to tell about his experiences with Bonnie and Clyde and other members of the gang when asked, as well as share his scrapbook of pictures and memories. He always emphasized that he was not with them when anyone was killed. Perhaps even more memorable than the Bonnie and Clyde stories were his experiences on death row and how he was eventually pardoned by the Governors of two states, thanks to the dedicated effort of a small group of active Christians. Ralph always used his stories to emphasize his strong Christian faith, and spent many years working at Buckner's where he could help kids. I often encouraged Ralph to write a book, but was not smart enough to offer to write it with him. Now I am glad I didn't. His story is preserved in an excellent book, better than I would have written, thanks to an excellent author. I highly recommend it to anyone with interest!

The first time I went on this way of eating (it is NOT a diet) I lost 44 pounds. I felt SO much better! It is a way of eating for the rest of your life. You must be very dedicated and diligent in keeping on this way of eating as you make everything. Fresh vegetables, fruits, homemade breads with flours from the health food stores, that are buckwheat, rice, etc. that have no wheat gluten or yeast in them. It is so worth it, though. Illnesses that you have just disappear! I would recommend this book to anyone that has been sick for a long time, and doctors tell them that it is in their "head", which is what I was told. Or, people with high colesterol, high blood pressure, and many other ailments. I HIGHLY recommend this book! I also strongly suggest that you get the cookbook along with this one, as it has a lot of great different receipes to cook from!

                    1 out of 5 stars Quaaaaak.......2007-06-10

If eating nutritional yeast supplements (dead) or yeasted bread (dead) could cause totally unrelated species of yeast (c albicans, living) to overbloom on your body, this would be a scientific watershed, and this finding would have appeared in a peer-reviewed scientific journal instead of a self-help book written at the third-grade level without citations, evidence, and plans for further research.

This book encourages readers to think that they can control a virtually unlimited range of maladies by applying a one-size-fits-all quack cure. It thus discourages readers from getting safe and effective help from real healthcare professionals.

I believe this shows an utter lack of ethics on the part of the author.

Readers would be better served by reading a history of medical science (e.g. The Cambridge Illustrated History of Medicine) or an introduction to critical thinking (e.g. The Power of Critical Thinking: Effective Reasoning About Ordinary and Extraordinary Claims).

This book opened my eyes to the evil that moldy/yeasty/sugary foods can do to the body. Don't get me wrong, I still struggle with sugar addiction, BUT this book was the first to make me see how all the emotional turmoil I experience each month could be eliminated or minimized with the help of the M E V Y diet (Meat, Eggs, Vegetables, Yogurt). It is amazing how cloudy thinking, mood swings, energy levels, skin, could all be related to something as simple as sugar, but there your are. Thanks to you William G. Crook!

i bought the book and learned a lot from it... i followed some of the steps in the book and realized how effective removing certain things from your daily diet has a remarkable affect on the body. i would recommend reading it and using it as a guide to what you wish to achieve... even following some of the steps helped me.

                    1 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.......2006-03-25

First of all, I didn't think the book was very well written - it needed much tighter editing. Many points are repeated over and over again, and I found several typos. It is also heavily aimed at Americans with poor diets.

However, I did it, although I had to go to 3 doctors to find someone who would prescribe the necessary drugs, and then only reluctantly. I have just finished 6 months on it and am going to stop now. It has helped none of my health problems, and I have in fact had new fungal rashes develop while I was doing it. The food restrictions make it very hard to lead a normal social life.

According to his questionnaires, I am a prime candidate for candidiasis, but this treatment did not make any difference. No harm in trying it, but don't put too much hope into it.

                                  Book Description

Coming of age in Paris in the 1920s, film and stage actress Lois Moran was a rumored paramour of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald and the inspiration for the character of Rosemary in his Tender Is the Night. As a young girl, Lois moved to Paris with her mother and thrived in the artistic and literary glow of the city. She danced with the National Paris Opera at age 14 and also was cast in two French films. Samuel Goldwyn, on a European tour in search of new talent, saw her work and was impressed. He cast her in what would become one of the best-known films of the era. With her performance as Laurel, the emotionally conflicted daughter in Stella Dallas, Lois Moran became an overnight sensation and took Hollywood by storm, and on her own terms. The author corresponded with Lois Moran during the last five years of her life. He had full and exclusive access to her journals, scrapbooks, and photos. In telling the Lois Moran story, Buller illuminates the history of film, theater, and television. He also includes a thorough and unique account of the actress's relationship with Fitzgerald.

5 out of 5 stars Lois Moran, Of Thee I Sing.......2006-10-09

I suppose I first encountered Lois Moran as most people did, via Scott Fitzgerald's portrayal of her as Rosemary Hoyt, the ingenue in his tragic 1934 romance TENDER IS THE NIGHT. Since Arthur Mizener identified Lois Moran as Rosemary's "original" in his 1950s biography of Fitzgerald THE FAR SIDE OF PARADISE, her name once again became recognizable, and we began to think of her as a silent film star who must have beeen cute, but surely without talent otherwise wouldn't her performances have survived? Now Richard Buller steps forward with this biography of the actress herself, both in and out of her relationship with the great novelist, and his book shows us that she's perhaps even more interesting when considered as an actress alone, and not just a Lolita-like playtoy.

Buller explores the bond between Gladys (Lois Moran's mother) and her daughter, and rebuts the myth that Gladys was a conventional stage mother who disliked her daughter's interest in married men. Gladys is worthy of a book all of her own! She took Lois from their settled life in Pittsburgh and brought her to Paris as a teen to escape the repressive US climate of the day, and to show her daughter life in big beautiful capital letters.

Stardom in the movies was only a sort of lagniappe to Lois, who abandoned Hollywood when she married in 1935. And she was signally a free-lance player, one who evaded the contractual obligations of any one studio (except for a brief and not too happy contract with Fox). That may have precipitated her withdrawal from cultural memory, however, for I think in the classical cinemaa the studio really built their stars up, and the ones who played it free-lance aren't as well remembered today. (We know Clark Gable, for example, better than we know, say, Irene Dunne.)

Buller has uncovered three short stories that Lois Moran wrote about Scott Fitzgerald, it's a shame that his publishers couldn't have authorized their publication in an appendix, for the excerpts he quotes are fascinating. Just as tantalizing are his descriptions of some of Moran's movies. I for one am going to go on a hunger strike until Turner Classic Movies schedules a showing of WEST OF BROADWAY with John Gilbert--the ultimate "bad luck" movie from Buller's description.

Lois Moran went to Broadway and starred in two Gershwin musicals (OF THEE I SING and LET 'EM EAT CAKE), then married an industrialist who ran Pan Am, Clarence Young. In the Youngs' luxury apartment here in SF's North Beach, on Vallejo Street, they hosted a secret wartime conference with FDR, Lindbergh, and other luminaries. I'm going to go there later today and try to talk my way into the graces of the current owners of the building and photograph the room where it all took place. After Clarence and Gladys died, Moran's later struggles with alcohol make for sad reading. What a story! And what a woman!

5 out of 5 stars "Of Thee I Sing for Lois Moran"........2005-06-30

Lois Moran's life and body of work, so carefully portrayed by Richard Buller, are a living tribute to the wonderment of Lois Moran, the person. Here is a portrait of some eighty years of giving without reservation to the people of this planet.

The author's insightful and diligent research, coupled with some memorable findings in her journals, papers and photographs, have made this book a true and masterfully constructed literary achievement.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A life worth reading.......2005-06-21

Richard Buller's knowledge seems to have no bounds. With clarity and confidence, the author presents key moments in the life of Lois Moran. He also spends a third of the book exploring her relationship with F. Scott Fitzgerald. Buller had a vast amount of information at his disposal: Moran's journal and autobiographical notes, her son Tim, and Moran herself. Plus, he researched numerous books and contemporary newspaper articles. Intimidated? Don't be. Buller pulls all the pieces of the puzzle together for us, in a seemingly effortless flow of historical events. Don't know the works of Moran or Fitzgerald? Buller provides clear summaries. Then, he takes us to the next level by analyzing how Moran influenced Fitzgerald. In addition, the book provides many pictures with helpful captions. Even if you've never heard of Lois Moran, this is a "must have" for anyone interested in F. Scott Fitzgerald, movies, or the Jazz age.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A New Old Friend.......2005-06-14

I had never heard of Lois Moran - now I am a fan! Richard Buller's fascinating account of this remarkable woman is brilliantly researched and beautifully written. Why more has not been made of this shining Hollywood star is a curious mystery. Happily, Mr. Buller fills us in with style. He describes the era adroitly and offers surprisingly intimate historical nuggets, sly humor, and a deep poignancy that moved this reader to tears. I felt as if I were walking with Lois every step of the way. Like meeting an old friend for the first time. Her gleeful, almost childlike kinship with life attracted sparkling people and events; yet her "grown-up" values guided her to always hone her gifts and to help others. A unique example that despite our heartaches, we can indeed create a "beautiful fairy tale" of our lives. A delightful, revelatory read. Inspiring.
