Book Description
This entertaining guide directs travelers to the off-the-wall and offbeat destinations in Florida, home of gator wrestlers, school bus demolition derbies, Hemingway wannabes, the Fountain of Youth, the Nudist Hall of Fame, and a utopian community based on the premise that the earth is not round, but concave. Additional oddball attractions include a graveyard for roosters, the world's largest strawberry, the world's smallest police station, and museums dedicated to seashells, hamburgers, oranges, teddy bears, sponges, air conditioning, and one very old petrified cat. Documenting local oddities and forgotten history, this travel guide covers Florida in six regions with maps and detailed directions for each site as well as phone numbers, hours, web sites, and various photographs.

Book Description
Hailed as “the most important congressman in the House of Representatives during the Civil War” and still honored in Pennsylvania as the father of its public school system, Thaddeus Stevens grappled in his day with many of the issues that confront us today: racial and economic equality, affirmative action, and equal access to education.
Volume one of the projected two-volume edition of The Papers of Thaddeus Stevens covers Steven’s political career from his Vermont youth to the end of the Civil War. It includes letters and speeches from his early days as a Gettysburg lawyer and as a representative in the Pennsylvania assembly through his antislavery efforts to the 1865 passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, freeing all slaves.

Wonder Collection.......2001-12-08
Beverly Palmer has done a much needed service to history by collecting the works of one of the most important figures in American history. It is a joy to read.
Book Description
Most Americans regard "kids who kill" as a problem unique to our era. But in historian Joan Jacobs Brumberg's important new work, Kansas Charley, she reminds us that it is, tragically, a long-standing dilemma.
Through the moving tale of Charles Miller, Brumberg takes us into a world of poverty, tragedy, and abuse, of people and places that shaped Miller's behavior, his crime, and his punishment. Orphaned at the age of six, Charles Miller failed to find a safe home, and, at the age of fourteen, was riding the rails under the self-styled moniker "Kansas Charley." Then, on a September evening in 1890, when he was only fifteen, Miller shot and killed two other young men in a boxcar headed for Wyoming. Guilt ridden, Miller gave himself up. His trial lasted just three days, ending in a death sentence that resulted in his controversial 1892 hanging. Some Americans thought the boy's execution was barbaric while others hailed it as an act of justice. Brumberg tells Miller's story with clarity and compassion, suggesting that then, as now, the decision to execute was politically motivated.
Kansas Charley brings vividly to life a thought-provoking chapter in the history of American juvenile justice. It also sheds light on our contemporary predicament, encouraging us to think about what it means for the United States to continue to uphold the juvenile death penalty in the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
A Student in Good Hands.......2006-06-26
Since my son is taking a course at Cornell Summer College from Professor Brumberg, I thought I would read one of her books to get an idea of how she thinks and writes (a gross generalization that often works for me). I expected a scholarly but dry account of 15-year-old murderer, Charley Miller. I did not expect a dramatic and compelling historical novel that rivals today's best books. "Kansas Charlie," is extremely well researched and written in a simple, direct and contemporary style. Although she attempts to be fair and objective, it's obvious that Professor Brumberg wrote this novel to advance her own unarguably poignant point-of-view regarding juvenile justice and how little progress has been made since the Victorian Age. But, who can blame her when political maneuvering rather than an interest in solving an important social issue often blunts real progress? I'm certain my 16-year-old son is in extremely good hands.
Intriguing Book About Juvenile Murder Case.......2005-06-05
Well Researched book for a murder case by a juvenile back in the 1890's that can be easilly related to cases that happen today. This story of Kansas Charley is well written and a sad situation where a child that could not find a place in society had slipped through the cracks of the government that should of protected him.
A compelling historical drama.......2003-11-25
Kansas Charlie's life is a great reality check for someone who's read too many Horatio Alger books. I read this book very quickly. Dr. Brumberg tells the story well - the prose is lean and engaging, the historical details are perfect. (I can imagine a movie or documentary of this book). The book stayed with me long after I read it. What's remarkable is how little has changed in the last 110 years. Troubled, impulsive boys with access to guns still kill. Prosecutors' and politicians' desire for the death penalty for juvenile murderers is still politically motivated.
This is an excellent book.......2003-11-25
Kansas Charley is a fascinating book which ably combines American social and cultural history, developmental psychology, and legal studies. The book traces the story of an orphaned yboy who descends into impoverished and desperate circumstances. He ends up killing two other youths and is ultimately put to death. Kansas Charley recounts this history, but does more. The book paints a fascinating picture of 19th century social life and places Charley in context. It also does an excellent job of connecting modern day attitudes towards juvenile crime and punishment with their historical roots. This book is very timely given current debates over the fate of Lee Boyd Malvo and other children who kill. I'm a professor of U.S. cultural history and think this is a wonderful addition to the scholarship on the history of childhood and the history of American social life.
Over 100 years ago...so timely now!!.......2003-11-21
The simple title, "Kansas Charlie", belies what's between the cover of this scholarly, but extremely emotional saga. It is a sad tale that has vast implications for what we see a century later. Dr. Brumberg doggedly followed the trail of Charles Miller, accurately depicting the many stages of his personal tragedy. As a pediatrician and an advocate for children, there were times during my reading when I wanted to jump into the story and offer my help to this unfortunate youth. The author descriptively takes us back to a setting where the reader could easily say, "That was then...". Her arguement is persuasive enough where we could say, "Things haven't changed so much..."
The dockets in our juvenile courts are still full.
Despite this being a truly heinous crime, the conflict between political force and progressive social movements determined Charlie's fate. True to her profession as a historian, Dr. Brumberg succeeds very well in time transport for her readers, permitting them to gauge whether or not we've come very far in how we regard children. This is very readable history and very few readers will walk away from it without a strong opinion about juvenile justice.

Get This Before You Get Your Puppy!.......2005-11-19
We recently got our first ever puppy and bought several books to learn what to do and what to expect, but none of them are as good as this book. Bonham's book is thinner than some of the others I have, but she packs more practical information in her book. Her writing style is easy and friendly, making the reading of the book fun as well as easily understood. She includes practical tips on everything from traveling to training and getting through those early days. I also am thrilled with the lists and charts in the appendix, which will make care of my new pet easy for a long time to come. I wish I had bought this book before we got our puppy, but I'm glad I at least have it now.

Best Book.......2007-10-06
I love this book. A friend at my work showed it to me and told me how great it was and I've bought it for all my knitting friends. They love it. The projects are small and illustrations are gorgeous.
Nice, easy to make, but expensive!.......2007-09-02
Many of the gifts in this book are gorgeous, don't require a lot of sizing, are easy for a novice, and use lovely, livable color combinations. My only criticism is that with the luxurious all-natural yarns she recommends, the gifts can end up quite pricey! One gorgeous blanket is double knit with alpaca . . . even using a discounted wool blend the yard costs came to over $200 and that was before I bought the needles or spent the time making the gift. As a student who was hoping home-knit gifts could be a way to save money but still show I cared about the recipient, this book did not always fit my budget.
This is a GREAT book to own!.......2007-08-24
Lately I have been * very * selective about the knitting books that I purchase,,, as there is such an overabundance of knitting books on the market that are same old /same old,,, nothing new~
I have taken this book out of the library on numerous occasions when I want to consider knitting a gift for someone special.
I finally have come to the conclusion its time to buy the book and add this to my personal knitting library!
True, most of the projects are easy enough to figure out on my own but its the inspiration that is the factor here,, it helps with IDEAS ~which is what I need!
This book has it broken down into approx hours it takes to knit up a gift,, and covers many different TYPES of gifts you may give thru out the course of the year.
Sometimes,,,, I just want to knit * easy* and * fun* items ,,,to go ahead and have reason to purchase just 1 or 2 skeins of that REALLY soft cashmere??~...(and save the cables and intarsia for a project that ISN'T a gift!)
Weddings,,,there is one LOVELY lovely throw in there( that I * may* just make for a friends daughter who is getting married)
Same goes for my mother,,she would love this throw...
Baby showers???
Lately,, I have been going to a lot of baby showers ~
Presents that are quick to make in a luscious yarn,,,,,are very much welcomed by me!
This is covered in the book ,as well as small OR large presents to give to that special man in your life.
(There are a couple projects in there that I wouldn't mind giving to myself as a gift)
I think what I like most is that the author and designers are truly frugal with your knitting time ,and knit quite a few of the projects circularly therefore saving you endless hours of sewing up time~
I love the way the author shares her ideas on presentation of the actual presents ~ to me ,this is very important if you have taken the time to knit a gift!
I have taken this out of my local library for the last time,,,its August ~ and I was thinking of Christmas gifts *NOW*,,,so its time for me to finally break down and buy this book!
Great book to give as a gift.......2007-07-08
There are some very good patterns in this book, like the beautiful scarves, and it strikes me as a great gift for a knitter. The photos are lovely and it is a pleasure to read this book. I'm not sure when I'd have the patience to knit up a gift bag, although that may come with time, but I sure do enjoy looking at it.
A knitting library must have!.......2007-06-09
Great book! Full of excellent and clear patterns. The author also includes an informative section on color at the beginning of the book.
Book Description
A special two-book set exclusively available to Amazon.com customers: two premiere knitting titles from STC Craft/Melanie Falick Books, publisher of beautiful and practical knitting and craft titles.
A fractal is a complex geometric figure made up of patterns that repeat themselves at smaller and smaller, or larger and larger, scales. In nature, they're found in fern leafs and corals. In this book, they're found in the pattern for a scarf, the cables of a pullover, and the intricate hemline of a skirt. The pentagon is a familiar five-sided figure that, in nature, can be spotted in the starfish or sand dollar; in this book it's spotted in the yoke of a pullover, the textures of a cardigan, and the shape of a shawl. In nature, water waves and chemical waves abound; in this book, they flow as the patterns in a hat and mittens and in the gores of a skirt.
Knitting Nature is a singular book created by one of the most innovative and respected designers working today. Norah Gaughan, who got her degree from Brown in both biology and art, has combined her knowledge to compile this book of 39 fabulous designs inspired by patterns in nature. With each design, Gaughan first explains where in nature the pattern can be found, such as the spiral in a ram's horn or seashell; then with step-by-step instructions she shows how she rendered that pattern in a skirt or tunic or coat. Complete with exquisitely beautiful photographs, this sophisticated book is truly one of a kind.
Today's knitters are chic, smart-and busy. Although they love to knit and enjoy making gifts for family and friends, they're constantly faced with the challenge of finding enough time to actually finish what they've started.
Last-Minute Knitted Gifts solves this problem. Joelle Hoverson, owner of Purl, the hip knitting supply store in downtown Manhattan, has designed more than 30 fun, fresh, beautiful patterns, most of which can be made in less than ten hours-some in as little as two!

Loved 1/2 the pack.......2007-05-30
I loved "Last Minute Knitted Gifts", and have to admit that I first saw this book at the local library. I borrowed it and then knew I needed to buy it.Having said that, I am a beginnerish knitter. The hat designs in this book are really good and I've knitted a number of them as gifts for family. Its got a good selection of simple and quick to knit gifts to choose from, so all my 4 stars go to this book.
The second book in this pack "Knitting Nature" - sorry I can't recomend it.The patterns were way to hard for me and the designs definately not to my taste.(I think I'll donate this one to the library)

The Gardener's Guide to Growing Fritillaries (Gardener's Guide)
ASIN: 088192511X |
Book Description
North America is home to approximately four dozen bulbous genera. Among these are some very popular rock garden plants, such as Calochortus, Erythronium, and Fritillaria, which have never had anything substantial written about them in book form. Others, including Calydorea, Hypoxis, and Muilla, are not as well known outside specialist collections. The characteristics that make bulbs so desirable in gardens include their great diversity of flowering time, color, size, and form; their ability to adapt to a wide range of environments; and their capacity to multiply and spread without a gardener's intervention. Amateur botanists and horticulturists, particularly those with an interest in alpine and rock gardens, and travelers planning a field trip to choice plant-viewing sites all over the continent, will be inspired by this firsthand account of native North American bulbs. More than 100 impressive color photos illustrate the 11 original chapters.
Customer Reviews:
Descriptive information identifying the various species.......2002-07-11
The North American Rock Garden Society is an organization of amateur botanists and gardeners drawn from around the world who are devoted to all aspects of the plant species grown in rock gardens. This unique horticultural society commissioned Jane McGary to compile a wealth of contributions from expert contributors to present a comprehensive reference on North American bulbous plants that would be suited to the geographical ranges, soil varieties, and moisture regimes found throughout North America. In addition to descriptive information identifying the various species, practical information is provided for growing these plants from seed, as well as tips for viewing them in the wild. Superbly enhanced with more than one hundred full color photographs, Bulbs Of North America is a core addition to any personal, professional, academic, or community library horticultural and gardening reference collection.

Book Description
The classic of child therapy. Dibs will not talk. He will not play. He has locked himself in a very special prison. And he is alone. This is the true story of how he learned to reach out for the sunshine, for life . . . how he came to the breathless discovery of himself that brought him back to the world of other children.

Amazing description of psychotherapy.......2007-08-27
I have read this book several times because it always refreshes my enthusiam for the possiblities that psychotherapy can offer. The sesnsitivity of the therapist in her interventions illustrate beautifully how non-interference and genuine feeling can be such a helpful way to help a person become in touch with themselves.
great book.......2007-06-27
I didn't truely u/s the impact of play therapy till i read this book. it is dated, but it is a classic and a must read for therapist etc.
Interesting, but Completely True?.......2007-06-06
This is the allegedly true story of a five-year-old boy. His name has been changed to protect him, but in this book he is called Dibs. His parents are wealthy and very well educated. They are baffled by their son, who is in a special school for bright children even though he seems to show no signs of being bright. He almost never speaks, and when he does it is mainly during tantrums, and in short babyish sentences. Dibs' parents think he may have some sort of mental retardation, but his teachers at school don't see the symptoms for mental retardation in him. He seems to listen, although he pretends he doesn't. He studies things for long periods of time, and sits with books as though he is reading them. However, he avoids interacting with people and becomes very agitated when he has to leave school for the day and go home.
Dibs' parents are at the end of their patience. They are willing to try anything to get their son's behavior under control, and to figure out if he is a normal child with behavior problems or if he does have some sort of problem. They agree to the consultation of Dr. Axline, a child therapist specializing in play therapy.
This book chronicles the play therapy sessions Dr. Axline has over the course of about a year with Dibs. As Dibs becomes more and more comfortable with her and with their time together, he begins to let more and more of his feeling out, which reveal what his home life is really like and why he has withdrawn so dramatically into himself. As these sessions go on, Dibs begins to emerge as an extremely bright and articulate boy who just needs to feel safe in order to blossom.
It was interesting to read the actual conversations the doctor had with Dibs. It made me think twice about how I interact with young children and how they might interpret my reactions. However, I was skeptical about the complete validity of this book. I found it astonishing that such a small child could have such a command of language and of the world around him. I found myself wondering if the things he said had been embellished or edited in such a way to make him sound brighter than he was. His intelligence in this story made me doubt the realism of the rest of the book.
Great read!.......2007-02-18
I absolutely loved this book. It gives the reader an up-close and personal perspective of the power of play therapy for children. I had to read it for a class on play therapy I was taking, and I read it very quickly. It was hard to put down. Definitely worth reading, especially if you have an interest working with kids or in play therapy.
A classic!.......2006-06-26
"Dibs" is an awesome classic every counselor and/or play therapist will love! And even if you're not in the helping field - its a GOOD read!

A book you will remember.......2005-12-07
As a bookworm growing up, I pretty much read everything I could get my hands on, including all my mother's college textbooks and required reading. My mother went to college to become a nurse when I was in elementary school and this is one of the books that made it's way home with her. Since I had already been reading her child psychology textbooks, she gave me this to read. I fell in love with the book and I've read it at least one hundred times since then. I never tire of it. The true story of this amazing and misunderstood little boy will touch your heart.
great!.......2003-03-11
I'm 12 years old, and one time while looking through the library i found this book. The cover is a bit misleading, but its one of the best books i've ever read. It tought me about life and feelings and a little boy who had a very rough childhood. I recommend this book to any age, though its probably inteaded for adults because of some of the words. Its very hard to explain this book to someone without giving too much away, but if I like it, then anyone would...especially since i barely ever read. Just read the first couple of pages (amazon lets to read them) and you'll be hooked too. =)

Virginia Lee Burton's name may bring to mind a steam shovel and a man called Mike Mulligan, a charming little house, and a snowplow named Katy. Yet to speak only of Burton's achievements as a picture book creator would be to paint only part of the canvas of her life. She was also a dancer, an illustrator for an early Boston newspaper, and a musician, designer, sculptor, and printmaker.
Together with her husband George Demetrios, Virginia enjoyed a full life. They raised two sons, gardened and kept sheep, entertained friends, and taught art and design classes. Led by Burton, the design classes made up of local artists evolved into the Folly Cove Designers. A cooperative of sorts, this group created elaborately intricate designs of rural scenes and other natural elements, which they would carve into linoleum and print onto fabrics.
Simultaneously, Burton began her career in children's book writing and illustration. The early success of her first books, Choo Choo, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, and The Little House, as well as other books was an auspicious beginning for Burton, and the books have become classic and lasting examples of the fine art of children's book creation.
Well-known children's literature expert Barbara Elleman introduces the exuberant life, art, and books of Virginia Lee Burton, complemented by family photographs, illustrations, and other images of her inspiring work.

BETTER THAN BEAUTY tells the story behind the work of a highly-original 20th-Century California painter, Jeanne d'Orge. d'Orge was a unique and unconventional figure whose art and poetry are as earthly as they are mystical. Her creative career began in mid-life, after a drastic move. d'Orge left her husband and family (including her daughter, the famed children's book author Virginia Lee Burton) to begin a new life of love and creativity with the young inventor Carl Cherry in Carmel, California. She became a painter and poet of extraordinary vision with profound messages of liberation and authenticity for readers today. Jeanne d'Orge was recognized for many years as an "ancient, honorable citizen" of Carmel. With her second husband, whose invention of the Cherry Blind Rivet revolutionized aircraft building in the 1940's, she established the Carl Cherry Foundation, now the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. Jane Wilgress' perceptive study revives the artist's remarkable life in a beautiful, full-color volume filler with d'Orge's independent, courageous spirit. Wilgress conducted research in California, England, and Scotland to capture the artist's spirit and work. Archivist, librarian and student of the arts, Wilgress for ten years was Curator and Director of the Carl Cherry Foundation and Gallery, home to d'Orge's works.
