Book Description
Uncertain where to start, how to coordinate endless double feedings, or how to control the whirlwind? Don't worry -- Elizabeth Lyons and her "multiples" sorority will get you through. For real-world strategies on coordinating endless double feedings, getting the babies on a schedule (preferably the same one), and appearing to have it (and them) under control while out and about, Ready or Not...Here We Come! is the hilarious, tell-it-like-it-is resource no parent of twins should be without.
In her first humor-packed guide to raising twins, Elizabeth Lyons highlights the experiences and strategies of a group of friends who met in a multiples birthing class, and survived their pregnancies and first year with twins together.
Lyons provides the all-important feeling of camaraderie that will keep expectant and new parents of twins smiling and optimistic, and remind them through it all how blessed they are (even when they feel as though they haven't slept in weeks). Ready or Not...Here We Come! combines strategies that Lyons has gleaned from friends, doctors, nurses, and even perfect strangers to form one concise guide that will undeniably prepare those expecting twins as well as new parents of twins to complete that all-important first year.
Topics include:
- Preparing the Lair: Mandatory Gear for Babies and Mom
- Getting Organized: The Key to Success
- Getting Those Babies on a Schedule -- Preferably the Same One!
- Out and About with Twins: Methods of Appearing As Though You've Got It (and Them) Under Control.
"Ready or Not...Here We Come! is the advice you need in the short, funny format your sleep-deprived mind can absorb. Elizabeth Lyons tells it like it is in a laugh-out-loud look at the uncertainty, craziness, and absolute of your first year with twins. An absolute must-have for every mother who wished there were two of her to keep up with the two of them." - Lisa Earle McLeod, author of Forget Perfect
"Elizabeth Lyons' humorous yet realistic perspective provides new parents of twins with a great starting point from which to embark on that all-important first year." - Dr. Bob Covert, Leading Chicagoland Neonatologist
"Elizabeth Lyons tells it like it really is. From helping you survive back-to-back feedings, living with the stereophonic crying, and coping with a double round of diaper rash, she tells you what to do, what to buy, and what to ignore. My twins are now teenagers, and as a woman who felt like she was the only one coping with double Mommying, I would have sold my soul for practical, supportive advice like this. There is a light at the end of the twins tunnel, and Ready or Not will help you find it. Where was Elizabeth Lyons when my twins were little?" - Kristy Lucariello, President of Performance in Practice and mother of teenage twins
"Finally
a humor-filled, solution-packed, tell-it-like-it-is guide to the first year with twins!" - Betty Jean Young, BSN
Look for Elizabeth's second book, Ready or Not...There We Go! this summer.
Customer Reviews:
Good Plane read.......2007-05-29
I think this book is great; I enjoyed all of the anecdotes about the multiple society. Very good read although not very technically informative.
A cute, informative resource .......2007-04-11
I've read several books on life with twins, and they've all been at least a little helpful and funny. But this is the first I've read where the author already had a toddler before the twins came, and so it was nice to get her perspective and understand what that reality will be like for me. I like that the author really did have some good ideas and based on diverse experiences (she did breastfeed, and then switched to formula, so she understands pros/cons and strategies of both), and she has her circle of moms-of-multiples friends whose experience she draws on and shares as well.
One thing I noticed missing from the book was reference to or strategies for handling life with babies while they're stuck for a time in the NICU. I was looking forward to understanding how we might manage NICU visits with a preschooler at home.
I realize that there is no magic answer on how to deal with life with twins, but in my opinion, this book does indeed do a good job. If you're looking for another similar book to read, I'd also recommend Twinspiration by Cheryl Lage, especially if these are your first babies and you don't have other children at home. Also, for general multiples-pregnancy info, I highly suggest buying When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads by Barbara Luke.
Loved it!.......2007-03-21
This is a good book that I would recommend to anyone who is expecting twins or more. The author definately has a since of humor. This book gives you some good advise. It is also light hearted and fun to read at the same time. There were definately some laugh out loud moments while reading this book.
Marriage venting not advice.......2007-02-04
The author seems to spend the more time complaining about what her husband doesn't do then giving real advice. I was very disappointed it the book.
more for entertainment than for advice.......2006-12-15
As others have said, I read this while I was pregnant and it didn't mean much to me -- then after the babies were born, I found myself scouring it for anything that would help me cope. I found that it contained mostly comic relief, rather than practical advice, but that's useful too. One of my few memories from the foggy "fourth trimester" is of reading parts of the book out loud to my parents, laughing at how completely she hit the nail on the head. I agree that she gives breastfeeding very short shrift, so if you are already BF or determined to do so, don't follow her advice -- get a good book like "Mothering Multiples" and a good lactation consultant. Contrary to a previous reviewer's claim, she does, however, tell you how to go to the supermarket, though I still recommend waiting till DH gets home and then going by yourself (or napping on the couch while he goes!).

Book Description
Details Hale's long and close relationship with the famous comedian.
Customer Reviews:
Romantic and Sweet.......2007-08-05
This is a very beautiful memoir about Charlie Chaplin. Hale fell in love with Chaplin's tramp character, "Charlie." In her memory, it happened as a young girl when she first saw him at the movies, but one can suggest that it really happened when she co-starred with him in the "Gold Rush" in 1926. They had a close off-and-on romantic relationship for the next 17 years.
Hale wrote this in the 1960's, when she was in her 60's and had not talked to Chaplin for over two decades. Still, the pain and pleasure of her relationship with him seems quite fresh.
Unfortunately, she seems to be seeing the relationship through the prism of her Christian Science ideology. It is hard to say if she really loved "Charlie" the artist, but hated "Mr. Chaplin" the Hollywood businessman, as she insists. This might be a later interpretation that she imposed upon the relationship to suppress the very real contradictions that the relationship must have held for her. We should remember that she was in constant competition with hundreds of beautiful women for his affection and companionship. She desperately wanted to be special for him. The only thing that seems to have made her special was her love for Charlie the tramp character. One can say that Chaplin loved her for her love of Charlie.
She does give a fascinating dream account towards the end of the book in which she marries Chaplin and moves to a small village in Greece with him. Obviously, there, she would not have faced the terrible competition for his affection that she faced in Hollywood.
Heather Kiernan has done a wonderful job of editing this work into a narrative whole from what was apparently very choppy and incomplete manuscripts.
A Loving Tribute.......2005-10-10
This book is everything I expected it to be and more.
Too many books on famous faces are filled with stories of their sexual exploits. Too many of these books lose their credibility due to bad writing, unrealistic situations, and a tell-all attitude which cheapens the information presented. This book is not like that. It is classily put together like an old movie that never showed sex but smartly implied it. Hale does not blatantly throw her longtime love affair with Chaplin in the reader's face; she forces one to read between the lines and to still realize that there were barriers like marriage that she did not cross.
Along with stories about Chaplin, Hale reminisces on her life before and during stardom. She tells of winning a beauty contest that took her to Hollywood and meeting Chaplin on the street one day. She tells about filming The Gold Rush and her passionate love for Chaplin ever after.
More than anything else, though, this book gives its reader total insight into Chaplin as a man. He was tempestuously moody and difficult, yet insanely insightful. This all comes from a woman who knew him well for much of his life. So many books dismiss his personality to dissect his genius as a film maker but only glance at his behavior outside of that. This book looks into what Chaplin was like socially by a woman who was not only close to him, but is representative of the many women in the comic's life.
Miss Hale comes off as an annoying know-it-all bragging about Chaplin having an attraction to her during The Gold Rush in the Unknown Chaplin series. However, reading this book gives a whole new perspective on her. It helps one to understand that she was not bragging about Chaplin's affections; she was simply reveling in a tiny glimpse of hope that he might feel even a fraction of the love she felt for him. This is an honest, emotional account.
Totally misleading title.......2004-09-22
From the title of the book, one would expect intimate (i.e., sexual) tid-bits to be explored in this book. Forget it, Georgia Hale was almost without doubt Chaplin's mistress for several years but this prudish, virginal woman inexplicably chose to present herself as a chaste, untouched maiden, all the while living in Charlie's Summit Drive estate in Hollywood. Georgia Hale was Charlie's co-star in his immortal 1925 film "The Gold Rush;" she was discovered by Chaplin and she owned her entire career to him. She also fell madly in love with him but claims that she held off sleeping with him because of his (miserably unhappy) second marriage to Lita Grey. Her morality supposedly prevented her from taking the plunge with the Little Tramp. Yeah, right.
Georgia writes poorly, wanders all over the place in her style and tells the reader very little about Charlie besides the fact he was moody, brilliant, beautiful, sexy, maddening and immature. Oh yes, let's toss in genius to the mix, but we already knew all of that. Hale was in a unique position of revealing much about Charlie during a pivotal period in his life; she was undeniably close to him and he trusted her and treated her better than he treated many of his other paramours. But she muddies the water with an insipid and irritating style and the absolute crusher is the final chapter. It's an idiotic dream sequence which goes on forever and is both banal and bizarre.
The most interesting story in the entire book is when she briefly reunites with Charlie at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1972. Oona leaves the room and Chaplin asks her, "Have you ever married?" Even after 40 years, Georgia is still hopelessly besotted with Charlie and breathlessly intones, "After you, Charlie, no man could compare." Naturally Chaplin adores this line and showers her with kisses. One senses this was Georgia Hale's greatest moment since Charlie threw her over in the early 30's.
In short, a poorly written book, a tome of missed opportunities. Oh, what could have been!
Intimate Close-ups: Charlie Chaplin.......2000-04-11
I'm a huge fan of Charlie Chaplin's and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Georgia Hale was a "hidden" love of his and this book gave me a lot of new info on him. If you like Charlie Chaplin and want to learn about another part of his life, this is the book to read.
Georgia Gets Her Man- For A Time.......2000-02-01
I am a big Chaplin fan, so I try and read whatever I can get my hands on. Georgia Hale was Charlie's leading lady for The Gold Rush, and unbeknownst to me, one of his major loves off-screen. Their relationship was on-and-off again for several years, but he kept coming back to her. I enjoyed reading about Georgia's childhood and her search to meet the man (she claims) who completely saved her life. Her accounts with him are surprising, endearing, memorable. I only wish she would spend more time talking about herself as an individual, instead of Charlie's companion. This accounts for gaps in time and information since it is apparent that she feels the times not spent with Charlie are not worth mentioning. She also ends the book on a rather uneventful and abrupt note which is dissatisfying. You learn more about Georgia's post-Chaplin life (but not much) in the introduction by the author. However, it is a touching recollection of her times with this amazing man, hence my 3 stars.

Book Description
"COVERED CALL WRITING DEMYSTIFIED" is a timely and profitable tutorial investment program written as a novel, primarily for investors who have some knowledge of stock market investing but are new to covered call writing. It is the first work on this subject to simplify, fully explain, and instruct investors on how to use covered call option writing on common stocks. It may offer one of the best opportunities to achieve double-digit investment returns in the slow growth or no growth stock market expected by many experts in the future. This strategy works best in such a market environment. The investment approach of writing covered call options on stocks, a more conservative investment strategy than just owning stocks alone, has been available for decades. Until now, however, it has mostly been unknown or misunderstood by many investors.
Why is "COVERED CALL WRITING DEMYSTIFIED" needed? Many nationally recognized investment experts believe that the U.S. stock market in the future will most certainly produce significantly lower returns than the high returns of the past for many years to come. Some noteworthy examples:
* "The long-term prospects for equities in general is far from exciting." - Warren E. Buffett, The Chairman's Letter, Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. 2000 Annual Report, Page 3. "If you own equities, over the next twenty or thirty years you'll get a reasonable return
maybe its 6%, maybe its 7%. People who expect 15% a year are doomed to disappointment." - Interview with Warren Buffett by Maria Bartiromo of CNBC TV; May 3, 2003
* "Over the next century you should expect your share prices to average 6% (return) a year. Over the next five years, ten years, I think you'll be lucky to come out even on share prices." - Sir John Templeton, pioneer in the mutual fund industry, Business Center, CNBC TV Interview; October 1, 2001
* "The Dow has gone absolutely nowhere for three, coming on four years now. I think this will last maybe for another ten years." - John Bollinger, noted technical analyst and creator of the "Bollinger Bands," CNBC TV Interview; October 29, 2001
"It's wise to have realistic expectations on the overall returns you can expect in the stock market, which over time should clock in at about 6% to 7%. The days of double-digit annual returns are probably over for some time to come." - Suze Orman, "The Financial Connection."
"COVERED CALL WRITING DEMYSTIFIED" is unique because:
(1) A detailed investment program is outlined for personal implementation to assist investors in achieving consistent double-digit returns utilizing covered call writing on common stocks. This investment strategy is most effective in a slow growth or no growth stock market, as is projected in the future by so many investment experts.
(2) The entire subject matter is centered on a focused area of standardized options...covered call writing on stocks an investor owns or acquires in the future.
(3) A complete education on the subject is provided.
(4) Unlike other books about options, it is easy to understand by any investor. The book is written as a novel, which increases reader interest and ease of comprehension.
(5) Numerous easy-to-use Microsoft® Excel templates on a CD/ROM for PC use as well as manual worksheets are provided with the book to assist in making specific investment decisions regarding which covered calls to write on stocks, to effectively track results, and for other planning purposes.
(6) Practical application exercises are included at the end of the chapters to personalize the information provided and assist with profitable planning and execution.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth the money.......2004-01-11
I generally will not trash a book that is targeted at the novice but this will be an exception. First, I am a novice at options investing so should have been right in the middle of the target market for this book. Fact is, I learned more just searching the Internet while I was waiting for the book to arrive than I learned from the book. It is just too simplistic. All the knowledge contained in this book could have been conveyed in a 20 page pamphlet rather than this 300+ page puff piece with its wide margins and large fonts. A true disappointment.
waste money and time.......2003-09-13
Too simple. Explain simple points in length boring stories. It wastes my money and time.
Low risk strategy only with the right timing tools.......2003-09-07
I am a professional trader, in other words I have been making a living exclusively trading stocks and options for the past few years.
My experience has been that covered call strategy is low risk only if you have the right timing techniques to alert you to reversals. Unfortunately this book lacks in that area.
Let us take the example where you get a $1 premium on a $20 stock by selling a covered call say at a $20 strike. It is true that if the stock declines to $15 you lose $4. If on the other hand you had the timing techniques that could alert you to a reversal , you should have bought the $20 strike call back with say the stock at $19 for $0.25 making a $0.75 profit and sold a $15 strike call for $4+ which you can then close for a profit when the stock goes to $15. Waiting for the option to expire is not always the right strategy. The issue is how can you tell if there is a pending reversal and this is where timing is critical . Using these strategies you can indeed achieve double digit returns just by taking advantage of the stock short term movements.
While this book is a good introduction;to get the most benefit from this book you need to supplement it with another that focuses more on timing.
Too much emphasis on Return, not enough on Risk.......2003-09-02
This book is a good overview of covered calls for investors new to this strategy; one of the best I have seen. However, the book discusses primarily return, and minimizes discussion of risk, which I believe is a disservice to new covered call writers. Covered call writing is NOT a low risk strategy. It is LOWER risk (i.e., lower than simply owning stocks), but it is not LOW risk, and there is no guarantee of achieving the double digit returns which are advertised as being presumably easy to attain. Covered call writers still assume ALL the risk of owning stocks, less the call premiums received.
For example, it is very easy to view a $1 premium on a $20 stock as a +5% return when the transaction is initiated. But if the stock declines to $15 upon expiration, the total return is actually -$4 (-20%), which would wipe out several months of gains from other successful covered writes. This outcome is a very real possibility, even though in this book there is little discussion of this outcome or what to do about it, or, better yet, how to prevent it.
Another good book on Covered Calls is "New Insights on Covered Call Writing", which more thoroughly explains the risks involved with a covered write investment program.
As with any investment strategy, it is best to (1) learn as much as possible, (2) make sure both reward and risk are understood, and (3) practice on paper before jumping in with real funds. Toward this end, I found both books very helpful.
DON'T MISS THIS IF YOU ARE NEW TO CALL WRITING.......2003-08-13
This book has gotten a bum rap from a couple of people who consider themselves experienced covered call writers. Didn't they read in the book description that this book is designed for people that are new to this discipline? That's what I was until I read two of Kadavy's books on covered call writing. They are a lifesaver. So don't be misled. If you are an expert at this already, you probably don't need this book. But if you are new to the subject and want a detailed program for how to do it and make steady solid investment returns, this is the one.
Book Description
In industrialized societies, professionals have long been valued and set apart from other workers because of their specialized knowledge and skill. But has their role in these societies declined? Of what significance are they today?
In this concise synthesis of the major debates about the professions since World War II, Eliot Freidson explores several broad questions about professionalism today—what it is, what its future is likely to be, and its value to public policy. Freidson argues that because professionalism is based on specialized knowledge, it is distinct from either bureaucratic or market-based forms of work. He predicts a rebirth of the professions during which practitioners lose some of their independence and become more accountable to standards of a professional elite. And, defending professionalism as a desirable method of providing complex, discretionary services to the public, Freidson argues that market-based or bureaucratic methods would impoverish the quality of service to consumers, and suggests ways the virtues of professionalism can be reinforced.
The most accessible survey available of almost fifty years of theory and research by the scholar whose own work helped define the field, this book will appeal to the growing international body of scholars concerned with studying and theorizing about the professions.

This book takes a theoretical essay approach to professionalism in its attempt to mesh personal opinions with an array of information and citations that cover about half the book. The rest is a crude attempt to tie it all together; the result - the least comprehendible book I've ever had the dipleasure to read.

Book Description
With its unique ability to fulfill personal and professional goals, social needs and corporate objectives, volunteering is much more than its own reward. But just how much more depends on the thought and planning that go into the process. That's why, as more and more nonprofits and for-profits pool their resources in volunteering partnerships, the development of an effective approach to the design and management of these programs is essential.
This comprehensive book/disk set provides not-for-profit leaders, for-profit business executives, individual volunteers, community leaders, and others with the systematic, hands-on guidance they need to maximize the benefits of volunteering for everyone involved, from front-line volunteers to community members.
Focusing on the crucial concept of "return value," the workbook offers solid practical advice on recruiting, training, and retaining today's volunteers. It examines volunteer program planning and implementation for both not-for-profit and for-profit organizations. And, most importantly, it ex-plores how these entities can forge strategic alliances that match the nonprofit need for motivated, business-wise volunteers to the corporate desire to boost staff teamwork, time management, and other key skills.
The workbook comes complete with easy-to-follow procedures and checklists, plus worksheets and sample documents that are also included on the IBM-compatible disk. Simple to use and ready to implement, The Universal Benefits of Volunteering is an invaluable how-to tool for tackling a full range of volunteering challenges.
"A practical, well-designed publication that can help to increase volunteering and philanthropy through educating individuals on both the joy of serving others and the significant personal value that can be derived from the experience." —Patricia F. A survivor's story.......2002-04-10
This book is about Eugene Hollander, a survivor of the Holocaust. He survived under the most harsh conditions which were starvation, lack of sleep, being beaten, being overworked and living in the most horrendous facilites. Whenever he was given food, it consisted of bread crusts and watery soup. He weighed less than one hundred pounds when the war was over. His bed was a wooden plank and the showers were turned on for two minutes at a time. When the shower was turned off, he had to exit immediately or he would be shot. He was moved from one concentration camp to another, and during the war years he was in many different camps. The names of the some of the camps included Auschwitz and Mathuesen. This book was an excellent description of the Holocaust for teen age readers because it described in great detail his life story and how people were treated when the Nazis ruled western Europe.
