grandma takes a ride.......2006-10-02
This is one of those must have items when you're facing a trip with your grandkids (that's TWO generations away from your own days on any wild ride) and I must say this guide to the park was enormously helpful even before we got there. Thanks a lot! Our trip was a huge success and Ms. Wiley's book gets a lot of the credit.
A must have if you're taking kids to Walt Disney World.......2006-03-02
I first read an earlier version of this book several years ago, and Kim's sound advice has stayed with me, several trips on.
If you want to learn which rides to stay away from with young children, and what the must sees are, this is the book to read. And don't ignore Kim's most important tip of all. If you're travelling to Disney World with children, make sure you take that afternoon nap.

very helpful!.......2005-09-21
This is a really useful book, tons of tips, saved me a lot $$ and time. The most valuable thing I learn is to rent a multi-family vacation house with my friends, 16 people for $199 a day. We all enjoy the stay at a luxury emerald island resort. check this out: http://www.cyberrentals.com/index.cfm/property/126687
A Huge Help.......2005-08-27
I purchased this book as a guide to help plan a 5 day trip to WDW with my family. We just got back and let me tell you this book saved us a lot of waiting time for the rides, helped us know what to see and where and how to focus our energy. Ms. Wiley is right on the mark in her descriptions of the attractions and her tips about getting around the parks. The book was so helpful, I tore out the sections about each park and took it with us into the park. This version is missing info that wasn't available at the time of printing about some of the newer shows Disney has put in for its 50th anniversary celebration. The Cinderellabration show is wonderful especially if you have a princess lover in your family and the Wishes fireworks display over the castle in the Magic Kingdom. I would highly recommend this book even if you've been to WDW before.
Don't leave home without it............2005-08-09
This book is a must read before and during your trip. It has great money saving ideas and is easy to understand. The scare factors are extremely useful if you have children under 10.

Book Description
In Education of a Felon, the reigning champion of prison novelists finally tells his own story. The son of an alcoholic stagehand father and a Busby Berkeley chorus girl, Bunker was--at seventeen--the youngest inmate ever in San Quentin. His hard-won experiences on L.A.'s meanest streets and in and out of prison gave him the material to write some of the grittiest and most affecting novels of our time. From smoking a joint in the gas chamber to leaving fingerprints on a knife connected to a serial kiler, from Hollywood's steamy undersde to swimming in the Neptune pool at San Simeon, Bunker delivers a memoir as colorful as any of his novels and as compelling as the life he's lead.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and thought-provoking book.......2007-09-13
This is an incredible true story, about second (and third and even fourth) chances, and prove that it's never too late for someone to change their life. Today, there are thousands of kids just like Edward Bunker, and there are fewer ways for them to find a second chance, a way out of a life of crime.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who works in the criminal justice system, especially with juveniles.
Great, Have a tissue handy.......2007-09-09
The Education of a Felon by Edward Bunker is very touching. We sent a copy to
our grandson in prison for getting into fights in bars every time he is released from prison. He was so taken with the material that he now attends AAA and has started going to Church. He also let several other inmates read it and they too are working on changing their ways.
Sincerely,
Ol'wdb7777
street and book smart.......2007-08-14
Bunker puts you right into the prison life in this book. Although at times it seems a little rushed if not abrupt, this is a good page-turner and not too much is left to the imagination. It's a good memoir that at times can make you feel as nervous, angry or happy as the author felt.
great autobiography........2007-02-12
unlike the psychopathic rantings that fill jack henry abbott's "in the belly of the beast," this book about the life of a man who rose from a life of crime to the life of a successful writer is without self-pity, without self-justification. and, also unlike "in the belly of the beast," it is great writing with a great narrative drive. a story is built out of mr bunker's life, in clear direct prose, free of psychiatric babble. this is a fantastic book that deserves a wide readership. so go ahead and read the thing.
Education of a Felon.......2006-08-12
What justice James Frey (A Million Little Pieces) did for a drug addiction and rehabilation experience, Edward Bunker exceeds with his memoir of life in jail and as a criminal but with undulated truthfulness. His prose and descriptive talents make the reader wonder how Bunker could have maintained such a delicate artfulness through years of violence and rebellion. His diction and clear interesting reproductive detailing of events, as far back as early childhood and up to the heinous race wars within San Quentin penitentiary of his late teen years, manifest and validate his true genius and talent as a brilliant writer. Bunker pushes the reader so close to the experience of jail and on the streets of Hollywood, that one almost wishes to spend a day inside the brutal prison walls, or with the heroin crazed call girls, pimps, thieves and drugs dealers of the late night. As horribly frightening and intense as the scenes are, unspeakable situations of misfortune and crime, Edwark Bunker will have you dreaming to see it, and do it all yourself.

Pygmalion up to Date!.......2005-10-30
I thought this was a really off-beat and original twist on the Pygmalion story. In a reversal of the original, modern-day girl Sarah Little creates the perfect boyfriend out of clay. Clay Newman is charming, handsome, ripped... and kind of boring to have around. There are only so many compliments a girl can take. Fortunately, Sarah's old friend AJ is around for some human relief!
not (exactly) what I expected.......2005-06-24
Let me start off by saying that this is in no way a "bad" book. It merely was the light hearted book I'd expected. From the very begining of "A bird, a Bloke, and a Boyfriend" I felt as if I had missed out on important events leading up to Sarah and A.J.'s current friendship issues. Throughout this book I often carried a confused facial expression. I never really got the humor of the book. I mean, what was with the "creep camp" and blood sucking coconuts?
In the end I was disapointed that we never got to hear what Mrs. Wolf told A.J. that scarred him for life. (must have been pretty bad.)
I think this story had lots of potential and could have easity been turned into a 5 star book- if only it were'nt so confusing.
I'm willing to give this author another shot. I just hope the next book wont be as confusing.
A Triple Threat.......2005-06-16
This book was cheesy, predictable, and unbelievable. I bought this book because I had read other SMOOCH books and had enjoyed them. This book had cheesy inside jokes, a predictable plot, and the fact that The Boyfriend is actually a clay mold that the main character Sarah Little made... makes the story unbelivable. I did give it 2 stars because i didn't actually fall asleep while reading it.
a bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.................2005-04-23
Sarah Little is back in Australia for while. Since she last left, things have changed. Her old best friend A.J is now a total hottie, is dating Sarah's old enemy, and is totally akward around her. Just to tick him off, Sarah decides to work at the same summer camp as him. There, she uses her talent at art to create a sculpture of the perfect man, titled "The Boyfriend". When he magically comes to life and becomes Sarah's ardent suitor, A.J realizes that he doesn't like her with other guys. Will Sarah actually fall for the clay hunk, or will she and A.J. get a clue? And why is A.J so uncomfortable around Sarah....does it have anything to do with an incident from the past and the reappearance of a less than friendly neightbor?
A Bird, A Bloke and A Boyfriend.......2005-04-13
Being AJ's buddy is better than nothing, right? Well, if you want to be his bird, it's almost worse in Sarah Little's opinion. A bird is Australian for girl, as in girlfriend. Since she last saw her buddy, he turned into a hot bloke, and she would like to be his, but there's the little problem of Clemmie, his girlfriend, Miss Perfect. In frustration, Sally turns to the classics, and forms the ideal man in clay, ala Pygmallion and Galatea. Before her statue can be fired, it vanishes. However, a perfect man shows up shortly thereafter, Clay Newman. He is utterly devoted to her, making statements such as he has no memory that does not begin with her. Even with the obvious play on words in his name or his engimatic, yet obvious words, she doesn't get it for a long time. All this time, AJ looks on, wondering if he's too late, if he's lost Sally to this perfect guy.
Though somewhat predictable, this is a sweet story that exposes American readers to a bit of another culture as well as brings a classic tale into modern terms.

Customer Reviews:
Informative & practical, easy-to-implement activities!.......2007-04-12
My daughter will be attending a Montessori preschool in a couple of months [she's 2], and I wanted a practical manual that would introduce me to Montessori methods I could implement at home. This book is full of practical ideas, and is filled with activities and games thatare easy to implement in the home, and as a follow-up to preschool learning. The book covers topics like who is Maria Montessori, what is the essence of the Montessori method, how to use the Montessori method, planning your home around your child[child's bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, hall &stairs, games & activities] , exploring the neighborhood[in the backyard, in the park, in the countryside, in the city, going to school], & discovering about the world[the human family, journeys & explorations, the universe]. There are lots of practical & useful activities & games that one can implement with relative ease in the home or outside. The ideas in this book go a long way to helping stimulate a young child in line with the Montessori method.
Great intro book.......2007-02-23
We bought this book to get us familiar with the Montessori method of teaching. Our son is about to start at a Montessori school and we wanted to get educated in the teachings as well. It's a great intro book and I especially found the exercises fun and interesting.
great for moms, teachers, etc.......2007-02-12
I am a medical student, single parent and needed something to introduce me to Montessori instruction. I plan to enroll my 36 month old soon, but at this time, she is fine in the care of her grandparents and in the evenings, with me. Until she begins Montessori, I want to begin instilling some of the instructions. I ordered this book along with one other you will notice in my reviewed items. Both books are very good in my opinion, and all that I need. Even if I never enroll her in daycare, preschool, this is adequate. It gives great ideas that a parent or caregiver can share while with the child. Very good quality book.
A Good Read For Parents.......2006-03-18
This is a good book for parents not just those with toddlers and preschoolers. It gives insight into the montessori method and really shows you the interelationship between how a child deveopls intellectually and physically. I wish that I had gotten it earlier because it has good insights into toddlerhood - tantrums and all. My son is 21/2 and we are hoping to send him to pre-school in September, so we wanted to get a guideline so to speak about what we should be looking for and the best kind of learning at his age. Also we were looking for new ways to engage him, so I'm anxious to try out the activities. He's in the 'I want to be independent stage' and after reading the book I have adopted some of its advice on how to help him acheive this. All in all I would say its a good buy, quite informative.
Excellent Montessori resource for the home.......2006-02-18
I was looking for a good way to teach my preschool son at home using some elements of the Montessori method. However, I wanted to go at my own pace and in a relaxed way. If you need a more regimented and structured Montessori method at home read Elizabeth Hainstock's books. Leslie Britton's book is well-written, concise and hits all the main points. I really like the games and activities designed for children from two to six. I am able to pick and choose and with home materials to teach my son at home. My son is two so he's only able to participate in a few exercises. Can't recommend it enough.

Book Description
Star of TV's longest-running World War II series, "Combat!", Rick Jason has conquered television, stage, and film in a career that spans five decades. In his autobiography, "Scrapbooks of My Mind," Rick provides an intimate look at Hollywood's star machine, sharing his unique perspective and memories of MGM, 20th Century Fox, and the other big studios in their heydey.
Rick Jason recounts with wit and humor his youth in Depression-era New York and his WWII army life, where he narrowly escaped imprisonment at Fort Leavenworth. From Broadway in the '40s to Hollywood in the '50s, Rick worked beside the stars of the day: Orson Welles, Jayne Mansfield, Hume Cronyn, Linda Darnell, Ricardo Montalban, Charles Bronson, and more! He shares behind-the-scenes stories of his film and TV work, especially on "Combat!" with co-star Vic Morrow. A feast for fans, this autobiography captures Rick Jason's taste for life, as he even shares his favorite recipes.
Customer Reviews:
A Fitting Farewell.......2001-09-04
The late Rick Jason, best known as Lieutenant Gil Hanley of Combat! fame, wrote and released this book shortly before his death (by suicide). In it, the man - who was much more multi-dimensional than simply playing a World War II soldier - breathes life into what many thought was just another Hollywood story. Coming from a New York family of privilege, one of whom was involved in founding the American Stock Exchange, Jason threw it all over for an acting career. Handsome, articulate and talented, Jason impressed many in his early career, eventually leading to his selection as co-star, along with the late Vic Morrow, on Combat!. The stories of Hollywood days gone by, reminisces of family and friends, and the obvious love he had for his wife make this a book well worth reading, not just for the Combat! fan, but for anyone wanting to know more about what an actor is really all about.
Scrapbooks of My Mind - A Joy to the Senses.......2000-09-02
Whether you've admired Rick Jason since his early roles on stage and film, or first set your eyes on him in "COMBAT!" - the longest-running and only one hour television series about World War Two - you'll love "Scrapbooks of My Mind: A Hollywood Autobiography".
Mr. Jason has had an acting career spanning 50 years. His stage career was launched to impressive critical reviews. He then went on to star and feature in Hollywood films, make two television series, and become a regular in America's longest lasting soap opera, as well as guest starring in numerous television shows.
Mr. Jason is the consummate storyteller and his depiction of the rise and fall, then phoenix-like rebirth of the Jason family fortune offers a fascinating look at urban American life in the 1930s and 40s. And you'll be stunned at how the family's future balanced on the prophecy of a psychic during the Great Depression.
You'll get a kick out of Rick's description of his time in the Army during World War Two. You'll learn how one officer's anti-Semitism landed Rick in the stockade! You'll marvel at how the timely intervention an Army friend and the judicious application of theatrics saved him from a life sentence! What a loss it would have been to movie and television audiences everywhere if Mr. Jason's fascinating talent hadn't been allowed to flower.
Mr. Jason's Hollywood experience demonstrates how the old studio system made or hampered careers, for reasons that had nothing to do with actors' talent. And Rick is refreshingly candid about his five marriages as well. And he reveals for the first time to the public how these women profoundly effected his personal growth and career.
Rick writes about his time on "COMBAT!" and tells us about his relationship with the show's co-star, the late Vic Morrow. Mr. Jason describes the nature of their friendship and how he felt (and still feels) about that actor's tragic death during the making of the 1982, "Twilight Zone: the Movie." In addition, Mr. Jason tells about his longtime friendship with the late Dick Peabody, a fellow cast member on "COMBAT!"
A pleasant surprise awaits you at the end of Rick Jason's autobiography. For this successful entrepreneur is not only a multi-talented actor and craftsman, but a gourmet chef as well. To our everlasting delight, Mr. Jason shares his favorite recipes with his readers. And these are real gems! I've already tried several and can honestly say that I don't know how I could have lived so long without Rick's succulent scones with English Double Devon cream or eaten buffalo (as I do) with Rick's Quick Game Sauce.
Mr. Jason's acting career may not be over yet because as fans from the U.S. and Canada ready themselves to attend the October 6-8 "COMBAT!" cast reunion (aka Recon 2000) in Las Vegas, they also eagerly anticipate the making of a "COMBAT!" movie. A film Bruce Willis has expressed an interest in making, I hear. As one of these fans it is my fervent hope that Mr. Jason will have a theatrical role in the remake of "COMBAT!", the best dang one-hour program to EVER hit television.
But most of all you'll find that Mr. Jason is a man to respect and admire. A man who simply would not compromise his autonomy and integrity!
From Walnut Creek, California, this is your friendly 349th Heavy Weapons Crew (aka Nancy LionStorm) saying good night as I cuddle up to re-read the jubilant, "Scrapbooks of My Mind: A Hollywood Autobiography" by Rick Jason.
Combat! fan likes book.......2000-08-23
I am a fan of Rick Jason from when he was a star in the ABC television show, Combat!, which was popular back in the 1960s. I am in the process of reading this book and am enjoying it a lot. I haven't even gotten to the part about when he plays in Combat! and I am relishing reading about Rick's childhood in New York City and his early career. He sounds like a wonderful person, not at all the stern lieutenant he played in Combat! opposite Vic Morrow as Sgt. Saunders. This is a terrific book, highly readable and a must for Combat!/Rick Jason fans.

Irish diaspora in 17th-18th Century Europe .......2006-03-03
I discovered this book's existence from a bibliography in a similar book about Hugh O'Neill, the Earl of Tyrone (that of the Flight of the Earls), by Sean O'Faolain. This is a related story about the similar exile and diaspora of the Ulster clan McDonnell around Europe, following the Protestant usurption of Catholic James II in the Glorious Rovolution. It details the different cadet branches of the of McDonnell family from different generations who left Ireland and formed Irish Regiments, fought for foreign kings, aswell as supported the Jacobite cause from abroad.
It is a truly astonishing tale of Irish family history aswell as personal narrative European history of the conflicts and wars fought within Europe throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.
However, because of the former it did seem to be a book that can only be fully appreciated by fellow McDonnells and not necessarily by the general reader, who could, through certain tracts react by exclaiming, "so what?" to it all. Because of this I have to say I also struggled to remember the different McDonnells and their kinsmen despite three genealogical charts contained in the book.
The research is excellent, however, using the Stuart Papers at Windsor and several other archives around Europe. The writing is clear and concise and despite the complicated narrative which travels from one family and time period in each chapter I felt I came to understand a small part of Irish history in Europe.
Irish emigration in the 17th and 18th centuries.......1999-08-18
This book examines the problems confronting the Irish immigrants to Europe by concentrating on the lives of a series of emigrants from one Irish family, the MacDonnells of Antrim. A continuous succession of MacDonnells served in the armies of Spain, France and Austria between 1600 and 1820. One of them kept a diary of his experiences with Bonnie Prince Charlie in the '45 rebellion, another was a Spanish admiral at Trafalgar. Other Irish families covered by the book include the O'Neills, Magennises, O'Briens, Maguires, Butlers, Wogans and Sarsfields.
