3 out of 5 stars Recent Gide to Israel.......2007-01-21

We visited Israel for 15 days in December 2006 and had a wonderful time. In all honesty, I prefered the Frommers Guide to Israel better. It is more candid and it told us about terrific restaurants and hotels. I also preferred the descriptions of the important sites to see.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......1999-05-19

We took a trip to Israel and, before we left, we bought a copy of Fodor's Israel. It was an excellent resource. Even though we had a relative making reservations for us in Jerusalem, the guide was a lifesaver when we headed to Eilat.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2003-03-22

Joseph T. Robinson had an interesting career, being elected to Congress in 1902, elected Governor of Arkansas in 1912, in 1913 elected by the Legislature to succeed Jeff Davis (who is the subject of a really outstanding biography: The Wild Ass of the Ozarks: Jeff Davis and the Wocial Basis of Southern Politics, by Raymond Arsenault), and served in the Senate till his sudden death on July 14, 1937, having been the vice-presidential candidate on Al Smith's ticket in 1928. While the early chapters of this book, telling of Robinson's early years and his rise in Arkansas politics are interesting, the account of his Senate years is pedestrian and uninterestingly written. The author has a superficial grasp of the times in which Robinson lived, and while the book is well-footnoted and has a good bibliography, the book is actually a published thesis and was a disappointment to me. I have read a lot of senatorial biographies and must rate this one of the poorer ones.

                    Book Description

In May 1845 Sir John Franklin sailed westward from England in search of the Northwest Passage and was never seen again. Some thirty-five years later, Heinrich Klutschak of Prague, artist and surveyor on a small expedition led by Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka of the 3rd US Cavalry Regiment, stumbled upon the grisly remains at Starvation Cove of the last survivors among Franklin's men.

Overland to Starvation Cove is the first English translation of Klutschak's account. A significant contribution to Canadian exploration history, it is also an important anthropological document, providing some of the earliest reliable descriptions of the Aivilingmiut, the Utkuhikhalingmiut, and the Netsilingmiut. But above all, it is a fascinating story of arctic adventure.

This work is not as accurate as the work in the Herpetocultural Library Series regarding the temperment of some species. However, it does not give poor advice regarding husbandry. It is also thorough in covering every species and subspecies of Nerodia, providing wonderful full-color photos of every representative of this interesting Genus which makes it a great field guide. A must have for the pictures alone.

Don't plan on getting a lot accomplished for the first week or so that this book is in your house. It may be a reference, but it behaves like a sponge, sucking up any and all attention you happen to cast its way. Take, for example, the chapter called "Botany for Gardeners." High-school biology was never this interesting. The chapter on "Plant Conservation," which includes sections on plant diversity as well as vanishing plants, is frightening. Ever think you would be frightened by a gardening text?

Reference, however, is the key word here--for this is a reference, and not a final word (should such a thing even exist). With chapters devoted to natural gardening, kitchen gardening, ornamental gardening, indoor and city gardening, and safe pest control, this monster-size book (and undertaking)--more than 800 pages--is the place to start looking for just about any kind of information on gardening and plants. It's the desk version of Think Globally, Act Locally in that it gives a fairly good idea of where to go to flesh out any information. One regret: the short shrift given mushrooms, whose only appearance is among poisonous plants. One can usually expect more of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden than this kind of backhand to the chops.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden couldn't be a better place to launch such a project as the Gardener's Desk Reference. It has been a pioneer in gardening publications for a century, and gardeners everywhere owe it a real debt. --Schuyler Ingle

                                Book Description

The ultimate gardening reference work compiled by two dozen of the world's leading plant experts under the auspices of one of the world's greatest botanical gardens. Brooklyn Botanic Garden Gardener's Desk Reference is a milestone in garden publishing, the kind of groundbreaking work that appears once in a lifetime. No gardening reference--ever--has combined this scope of information in a single volume. The coverage in most gardening reference books falls into a few standard horticultural categories. The Gardener's Desk Reference unlocks the door to a vast assortment of plant knowledge from around the world. There is enough information in this single volume to serve any plant enthusiast--beginning and professional alike--over a lifetime. For easy use, the wide-ranging material is divided into twenty different sections--from "Botany for Gardeners" to "Kitchen Gardening" to "The Horticultural Traveler" to "Weights, Measures, and Conversions." The hundreds of indispensable sidebars, graphs, tables, plant lists, maps, and illustrations found throughout the reference make it even more accessible and attractive. To do justice to the continent's breathtaking diversity of climates and plant communities, all plant lists are organized by region, and every recommed species or cultivar has been chosen by an experienced landscaper tested by years of gardening in the area. Never before have gardeners had access to the breadth and quality of information in this authoritative reference.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate, but not the best...........2001-05-21

As much as I admire Janet Marinelli (STALKING THE WILD AMARANTH -- which I highly recommend) and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, I cannot recommend THE BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDENER'S DESK REFERENCE as THE reference book for the average gardener. A much better buy, though half again as much is AMERICA'S GARDEN BOOK, also from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. AMERICA'S GARDEN BOOK is a true reference which lists plants by type, and recommends plants sure to work in the average garden. Actually, AGB is a stunner. I use it all the time and rarely does it lack some kind of answer to my question.

DESK REFERENCE is geared to the middle-to-advanced gardener. Different sections of the book deal with ecologically sound gardening practices whether one is dealing with a backyard bog or the desert edge. All gardeners should undertake organic gardening as soon as possible (get rid of your lawn to begin with) as it makes for a better planet and you're less likely to poison yourself, but generally, Rodale's offerings are much more practical and detailed and therefore easier for the novice organic gardener to follow.

DESK REFERENCE is printed on pulp paper, contains some drawings but is devoid of photographs. AMERICA'S GARDENING BOOK is printed on top grade slick paper and loaded with photos. If you can afford both go for it, but if you can afford only one book buy the latter.

4 out of 5 stars a good reference, but not for quick lookups.......1999-07-27

A novice gardener, I bought this book when I needed to get some plants in the ground in my new house; for that it was a disappointment. Don't expect to use it to look up "clematis" and find out how to plant it or how often it needs watering. However, it is a good overall reference.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, one-stop referencing for all gardening questions!.......1999-01-26

It was with great joy that I opened this book for the first time. The book is a marvelous compendium of knowledge for all gardeners, no matter the level of skill. The writing is clear and concise. Subject matter is well planned and pleasing to read. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of this book is the index. The references and cross-references are so complete. I give this book my highest recommendation.

The Lost Daughters of China is that rare book that can be many things to different people. Part memoir, part travelogue, part East-West cultural commentary, and part adoption how-to, Karin Evans's book is greater than the sum of its parts. Evans weaves together her experience of adopting a Chinese infant with observations about Chinese women's history and that country's restrictive, if unevenly enforced, reproductive policies. She and her husband adopted Kelly Xiao Yu in 1997, and anyone curious about adopting from a Chinese orphanage--which houses girls and disabled boys--will learn about the mechanics and the emotional freight of the two-year process. Borrowing an image from Chinese folklore, Evans conveys herself, her husband, and their daughter as tethered by a red string that yoked them across an ocean and an equally awesome cultural divide.

The elegant prose is spiced with bits of ironic cultural dissonance. A discount shopper, Evans "felt more than a little strange buying China-made [baby] clothes with which to bundle up a tiny baby, one of China's own, and bring her home." On a bus tour through southern China, she is one of a "bunch of Americans with Chinese infants singing 'Que Sera Sera' in the middle of a sea of traffic. Will she be happy? Will she be rich?" To suddenly hear Doris Day over the horns of a Kowloon traffic jam is heady stuff indeed.

The Lost Daughters of China is at its best when describing Evans's tally of emotional loss and gain. At one point the bureaucratic adoption process is unaccountably delayed, but her father dies during that time and she's able to sit by his bedside. The most mysterious example of this emotional calculus is Kelly's birth mother. Evans invents many plausible scenarios that caused this unknown woman to abandon her three-month-old daughter at a market. These incomplete, necessarily provisional stories help give a face to the larger cultural processes that compel new parents to abandon 1.7 million girl babies annually. The stuff of headlines--human rights, infanticide, rural and urban poverty--is rendered personally relevant in Evans's compelling book. --Kathi Inman Berens

                                  Book Description

"This book calls attention to the pressing issues of abandoned baby girls in China, the result of a combination of historical and cultural prejudices against women and the current draconian, one-child policy. The Lost Daughters of China is an evocative memoir that will not only attract parents or would-be parents of Chinese baby girls but will touch the hearts of us all." (Chicago Tribune)

Proclaimed an instant classic upon its hardcover publication, The Lost Daughters of China is at once compelling and informative. Journalist Karin Evans tells the story of adopting her daughter, Kelly, who was once one of the hundreds of thousands of infant girls who wait for parents in orphanages all over China. Weaving her personal account with extensive research, Evans investigates the conditions that have led to generations of abandoned Chinese girls and a legacy of lost women.

With a new epilogue added for the paperback edition, this book will appeal to anyone interested in China and in the emotional ties that connect people regardless of genes or culture. In the words of bestselling novelist Amy Tan, The Lost Daughters of China is "not only an evocative memoir on East-West adoption but also a bridge to East-West understanding of human rights in China."

All I can say about this book is that it really opened my eyes. A couple times while reading I thought to myself, "Could this be real?" The statistics and information given in this book are mind blowing. The book delivers the information in an organized, easy to understand way. After reading so much about the adoption process it was a nice change to read about the culture my child will be coming from. I gained historical and political perspective as well a real understanding about the way things "actually" are in China. I have to say that anyone adopting a Chinese daughter should read this book. I can only imagine it will also help me answer some questions that may arrise as my daughter grows.

A must read. Very informative on China and how the adoption process came to be what it is today & why. Sad and heartbreaking at the same time. Did not agree w/all aspects (belief system of author) but apart from that, it is a really good book.

Since my own daughter is in the process of adopting a baby from China, I thought this book would give me insight in the whole process. The author is from the Bay area so we had much in common. The book was very informative.

I found this book to capture a lot of the concepts involved in the path to adoption. The style of writing is very good and enjoyable and easy to read. I have sent this book out on loan to many of my friends and family to open their eyes to the "big picture" of adoption. There was a bit of repartition in a couple of spots but that's about all I could critisise. A great read to help prepare for the whole process.

This is still the preeminent resource. I have read so many memoirs, stories, studies and the like in this subject area. I want to be very informed as I have adopted from China. I read this one before I went to China and was awaiting our referral. Some of the material is a tad dated but the essence still holds true. There isn't a better resource to read in my opinion. The Children Can't Wait by Laura Cecere is also fabulous but more stilted but well worth your time if you can find a copy. The Lost Daughters of China is fabulous and worth your time.

Nicole Mones doesn't waste any time getting to the heart of the matter in her first novel, Lost in Translation. Within the first 10 pages we discover that protagonist Alice Mannegan, an interpreter based in Beijing, has a yen for sex with Chinese men. By the time we reach page 20, we've learned that Alice is in full flight from her father, a racist U.S. congressman, and about to start working for Adam Spencer, an American archeologist on the hunt for the missing bones of one of the century's biggest scientific finds: Peking man. Having set the stage, Mones steps back and lets her characters do the work as she proceeds to spin a tale that is part mystery, part love story, and part cultural exchange. Alice and Spencer travel to a remote region of China, accompanied by Dr. Lin Shiyang, with whom Alice falls in love. Mones spends a fair amount of time on the team's search for the bones, whose mysterious disappearance during the Second World War has never been explained, but her main focus is less on finding Peking man than on exposing the skeletons in her main characters' closets. As Alice, Spencer, and Dr. Lin move forward in their quest, they are forced to reckon with their pasts. Each, it seems, has an ulterior reason for being where they are and doing what they do, and it is in the subtle play of personalities, motivations, and misunderstandings that Lost in Translation finds its rhythm.

The key to the novel's success is Mones's in-depth knowledge of China's culture, history, and politics. The question of cultural identity is at the core of her tale, and she skillfully weaves various aspects of Chinese life--from ancestor worship to the Cultural Revolution--into the personal relationships of her characters. By novel's end, readers have discovered a great deal about archeology, China, and most especially about the unmapped territories of memory, desire, and identity. Lost in Translation is a fine first novel, the first salvo of a promising literary career.

                                  Book Description

A novel of searing intelligence and startling originality, Lost in Translation heralds the debut of a unique new voice on the literary landscape.  Nicole Mones creates an unforgettable story of love and desire, of family ties and human conflict, and of one woman's struggle to lose herself in a foreign land--only to discover her home, her heart, herself.

At dawn in Beijing, Alice Mannegan pedals a bicycle through the deserted streets.  An American by birth, a translator by profession, she spends her nights in Beijing's smoke-filled bars, and the Chinese men she so desires never misunderstand her intentions.  All around her rushes the air of China, the scent of history and change, of a world where she has come to escape her father's love and her own pain.  It is a world in which, each night as she slips from her hotel, she hopes to lose herself forever.

For Alice, it began with a phone call from an American archaeologist seeking a translator.  And it ended in an intoxicating journey of the heart--one that would plunge her into a nation's past, and into some of the most rarely glimpsed regions of China.  Hired by an archaeologist searching for the bones of Peking Man, Alice joins an expedition that penetrates a vast, uncharted land and brings Professor Lin Shiyang into her life.  As they draw closer to unearthing the secret of Peking Man, as the group's every move is followed, their every whisper recorded, Alice and Lin find shelter in each other, slowly putting to rest the ghosts of their pasts.  What happens between them becomes one of the most breathtakingly erotic love stories in recent fiction.  Indeed, Lost in Translation is a novel about love--between a nation and its past, between a man and a memory, between a father and a daughter.  Its powerful impact confirms the extraordinary gifts of a master storyteller, Nicole Mones.

This has to be one of the most engaging bi-cultural novels I have ever read!. Alice Mannegan, a young woman who for various reasons has come to be a free-lance interpreter in Beijing, is asked to interpret for an American paleontologist who is seeking to recover the remains of Peking Man, which, during the turbulence ensuing from the Japanese invasions of the 30's and 40's, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. (So far all historically true!)

Author Mones interweaves the psyches of imaginary present-time persons with the historical facts about the disappearance of the remains of Peking Man, which involved the French Jesuit philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and his spiritually (at least) lover Lucile Swan.

The result is a wonderful narrative within which Chinese and Euro-American communications collide, negotiate, and occasionally transcend certain cultural and speech differences. Because of the originality of the characters and the plot, the story is always unfolding and never fully predictable, which makes the book hard to put down.

As a cultural anthropologist whose first-hand experience with China extends over 20 years, I am extremely critical of much writing about China. However, I LOVED this book! I thought Mones understanding of cultural differences and how they manifest in communications and behaviors is extraordinary, and I now look forward to reading her other books A Cup of Light (2002) and The Last Chinese Chef (2007).

5 out of 5 stars A biased expat loved this book........2006-01-04

I loved this book, but I am biased. I am the same age, physical description, and emanate from the same geographical region as Alice. I also read this book while I was living in China and found it to be an accurate view of an American woman living in China. Alice is a woman who tries very hard to escape from her heritage and her past by immersing herself in the Chinese culture. This is also an approaching middle age story. Alice 36, has spent all her adult life in Beijing, and is pondering what she has to show for it all. Alice also agonizes over lost love, her biological clock running out, reconciliation with her estranged father, and future career plans.

The author manages to create novel around an actual historical event. The plot is built around a hunt for the bones of the Peking Man. They were stashed away for safekeeping during the Japanese invasion of China on the eve of WWII. They mysteriously vanished and remain unaccounted for to this day. I was so intrigued that I read some non-fiction books about the discovery of and disappearance of the Peking man, one of the oldest complete skulls ever found, and its disappearance. Fortunately, the archeologists made a plaster cast of the skull and it survived.

By the way, I noticed some criticism from some Asians who didn't like the premise of the story. I ask that they keep in mind the target audience and the cross-cultural aspects of the story. If Alice were Chinese it wouldn't be much of a story. While I was living in China I happened across a book written by a Chinese man who had attended Vanderbilt University. It was a bilingual book about how he "discovered" my city. I read it with great interest because I was curious to know how an outsider viewed my city and my culture. While it was basically a positive book I respect the fact that the author wrote about a few negative experiences he had in my city.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent debut for Nicole Mones.......2004-07-20

I have a confession to make. I grabbed this off the bookshelf because I thought a movie of the same title was based on this. When I saw it (the story) was based in China, I only thought Coppola might have modified the story a bit so she can film in Japan. Well, it turns out I was wrong! The book has nothing to do with the movie.

This book, apparently, is Nicole Mones' first attempt at novelwriting. And I have to say she did a good job. The whole story and parallelism of Alice, Dr. Spencer and the Peking Man was well done and very original. Pacing was a bit slow though and I found myself struggling a bit to finish the book. And the ending could have been better. Mones' lines are very good though. Natural and not out-of-place and unnecessary.

It's a good first attempt but there is still room for improvement. But it's still a good read, especially if you like reading about other countries and cultures.

3 out of 5 stars Connecting within and without.......2003-02-25

The key to this novel lies in its epigraph, a quotation from Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a French anthropologist and priest whose explorations of fossil hominids in China in the early 20th century forms the backdrop for this ambitious novel. "...it would seem that we have only got to look at ourselves in order to understand the dynamic relationships existing between the within and the without of things at a given point in the universe. In fact so to do is one of the most difficult of all things." Mones's novel is not only an anthropological, quasi-Indiana Jones search for relics (in this case, the remains of Peking Man), but it is also a novel about its main character's search to make the complicated connections de Chardin speaks about in the quotation. Alice is an American interpreter living in China in an unspecified time period close to the present. Alienated from her Congressman father because of his overt racism, Alice seeks to leave America behind and become Chinese. As she joins the search for the skeleton of Peking Man, Alice confronts her own demons. The book works at more than one level, but never fully succeeds as a thriller or as a character study. Nonetheless, the title captures quite well the difficulties of trying to move between cultures, never being sure what has been lost in translation. In fact, as wenavigate between thewithin and the without, don't we all lose something in translation, an insight the book portrays rather well. This is a novel worth reading and worth discussing with a book group.

3 out of 5 stars Weird but educational........2002-07-28

Let me begin by saying that I did not enjoy the heroine of this novel. She's very vain and seeks only Chinese men for her love conquests. In fact, it kind of creeped me out how much she only focused on Chinese men. The only redeeming thing about this novel was that it taught some information about the Chinese cultural practices of mourning a family member, drinking tea, eating, and speaking Chinese in a respectful manner to other Chinese people. However, I think I'm just going to stick with reading Pearl S. Buck novels, because unlike Pearl Buck, the heroine/author of this novel was way too much of a poseur. The whole time you're reading this book you get the feeling that the heroine/author is trying to convince you that she was Chinese in a previous life. Well, she didn't convince me of this and she was way too cheesy in her approach.

Exiled in Paris provides a compelling look at the personalities who fueled the literary and philosophical dramas of postwar Paris: James Baldwin, Alexander Trocchi, Boris Vian, Maurice Girodias, and many others. James Campbell provides a fresh look at Samuel Beckett's early career; reveals the facts behind the publication of the scandalous best-seller The Story of O; and tells the poignant story of Richard Wright's years in exile. He captures the sense of deliverance that Wright, so accustomed to daily humiliations in his own country, experienced during his sojourn on the Left Bank, where, for the first time in his life, he was treated as a great man of letters. Here, too, are all the circumstances surrounding Wright's mysterious death, which many close to him regarded as suspicious.

After the end of the Second World War, a number of African Americans, including many of our most talented intellectuals, decided that America was just not a sufficiently hospitable home. Those who could left for Europe. Many, landed in Paris, which provided a far more civilized society.

Literary giants like James Baldwin, Richard Wright and other intellectuals found a place where their worth was determined by things more significant than skin color. This is the story of their experiences.

                                          Another book worth searching for.
