Celebrating the Wild Mushroom: A Passionate Quest.......2002-08-20
Celebrating the Wild Mushroom: A Passionate Quest written by Sara Ann Friedman is a fascinating little tome. All about a journey, an infatuation into the world of fleshy fungi. This book takes the reader on a road less traveled, a road of little-known, somewhat mysterious and remarkable, to a world about the collection of mushrooms.
The author has a somewhat lyrical narrative throughout the book as she describes how she collects, draws and cooks the mushrooms she collects. She has many delightful recipes within the book as you read... many of these recipes are a collection of themselves and are culled from other devotes collectors around the country. As she describes the delicious edibles, you can imagine the unique flavors as you see the richly detailed illustrations. This book can be used as an illustrative supplement to a field guide as she writes about spore color, size and shape; usually the most important determining factor to many closely look-a-like mushroom species.
If you can find this jewel of a book around, by all means, it is well worth the money. As this is a very literate, readable book for the person with a mycocentric bent, and a very wise adjunct for all mycophiles to own.

friendly and factual.......2006-01-16
I found this book to be most helpful on a quick jaunt into this lush, charming area. The information and guides for Campeche and environs were most precise, including the most sophisticated and elegant restaurants, hotels and day trips. What I felt was strong research helped lend an air of authenticity and credence to the areas we visited, steps above other books that seemed to be mostly backpacking guides to this lovely area.

Book Description
In an attempt to find a middle ground between the ultra-conservatives who believe in pure capitalism and the ultra-liberals who believe in pure communism, the author documented the lives of 101 people and/or groups which have made us realize that the extremes have provided nothing but struggle and strife for a whole century.

Customer Reviews:
I know this man.......2007-04-20
Over the past 10 years, i have referred hundred of patients to "Elliot". He is an excellent cardiac surgeon and 5 years ago performed a five vessel bypass on me. And I am not even Italian. On a holiday no less 3 months after 911.
Had I had my coronary arteries "cauterized " mentioned twice on page 230, I would not be in good shape. Catheterized is what is meant. Also, Simon Dack at Mt Sinai was not a surgeon. He was a cardiologist and actually the founder of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology"
Reading the book is a bit like looking into a bowl of spaghetti in which each strand has a name. A tangleled web of Italian names intermingled and many slurped away eventually by the fork and spoon of Rudy. Would have liked more on Il Dottore and less on Mafia. I am surprised the book is not yet a movie.
Apologist for thugs, but an interesting story nonetheless.......2004-10-08
Although I strongly disagree with Mr. Felber's characterization of the American Mafia, I must admit this was an interesting story. It is also an intriguing look at man's constant struggle with good and evil, through the lens of a supposed true story. If everyone where completely honest with themselves, we would have to admit to similar struggles in our lives, although certainly not at the level Dr. Litner encountered/embraced.
The bottom line is that the American Mafia is no different from the cowardly criminal street gangs popular in South Central LA or other parts of the country. So if you can get past Mr. Felber's unabashed apologetics on behalf of these thugs (I did, despite my low opinion of them), you will enjoy an overall good read.
An exciting and suspenseful true story.......2004-10-05
Il Dottore: The Double Life Of A Mafia Doctor by author and biographyer Ron Felber is the startlingly true story of a physician at Mount Sinai Hospital who provided health care services for Mafia kingpins including John Gotti and Joseph Bonanno. By day, he pursued a flourishing career as a respected cardiac surgeon; by night, he was a gambling and sex addict, drawn ever deeper into the high-stakes world of organized crime. His double life came to a head-on conflict in the mid 1980's when the government's star witness, Ralph Scopo, lay on the operating table. Directed by John Gotti to "make sure that only one of you comes out of the operating room breathing" on one hand, yet threatened with ruin by mayor Giuliani on the other, he had to make the choice of a lifetime between loyalty to La Cosa Nostra and adherence to the Hippocratic Oath. An exciting and suspenseful true story, more enthralling than fiction.
A Super Read!.......2004-09-24
I've read a lot about the mafia, but reading Il Dottore by Ron Felber is like eating popcorn at a movie theater, you just can't stop. Elliot Litner's (Il Dottore) life is a roller coaster ride through a time when giants walked the streets of NYC: John Gotti, Carlo Gambino, Joe bonanno, Rudy Giuliani. The gang's all here, and they've never looked better.
Product Description
A gripping account of how a 'nerdy Jewish kid' from the Bronx became physician to New York godfathers.

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Book.......2000-05-28
Upon first opening this book, one is hit by a wonderful introduction which creates a promising beginning for the book. Unlike many books dealing with bears, this book contains good information and wonderful pictures that dazzle the eye. The ending brings all but the strong hearted to tears, as five years with Little Stony is ended abruptly. For anyone interested in letting their child read a good book about grizzly bears, with both pictures and excellent informational content, this would be the best one. The reader watches the bear grow from just a tiny cub to a large adult with the pictures allowing one to see the stages of development in a natural setting. Rick McIntyre weaves a breath taking story with his written words, letting the reader feel what Rick was feeling when those words were written. This book has truly made me interested in bears, visiting Yellowstone National Park and waiting silently at dawn in hopes that a bear would be spotted on one of the hillsides. Usually, my efforts pay off. This book makes one feel as if Little Stony and his mother were standing right in front of them, so detailed is the story and the pictures. A highly recommend book for anyone interested in seeing good pictures of grizzly bears in the wild and having good writing to accompany it. Buy this book now and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Our class read Grizzly Cub: Five years in the Life of a Bear and absolutely loved it. It's a great source of information as well as an entertaining story. Customer Reviews:
Great insight on the dynamics of boys. .......2007-07-05
This book was funny and easy to ready. More importantly it was extremely insightful. I loved it. As a single mom, I need really appreciated the candor and no-nonsense approach the author took.
This is a great book for understanding boys.......2007-02-27
I bought this book because it became clear to me that I do not understand my 3 year old son and I realized it would only become worse as he grew older if I didn't at least try to figure out what is going on from his perspective.
I think that this book really tells it like it is. He doesn't sugar coat it. I also think the person who took offense to his saying boys should stay out of daycare until 3 years old did not read the book very carefully. He does not say that mothers should not work, he says boys should not be put in institutionalized day care settings but that good home based day care or staying with a family member is acceptable. I've read this in other books as well that boys just don't do well in daycare they really need one on one close time with a single, consistent care-giver be it mom, dad, grandma or a home day care.
This book also says many times how it is not trying to put women down or trying to set back the women's movement, it is just trying to show how boys are different. I have already noticed this with my children. I have two girls and a boy and I quickly picked up that my son is 6 months to 12 months behind his older sister in his speaking, reasoning and his ABCs. I talked to his preschool teacher about it and was relieved to find out it is normal for boys to be behind girls and the teacher said exactly what this author says, boys catch up somewhere in middle school but until then they are 6-12 months behind girls emotionally and academically. My son has a September birthday and I will be holding him out a year to start kindergarten at 6 instead of 5. I have already seen it in his preschool class how boys are treated, unwillingly as defective girls. Girls take to things like circle time and learning while boys would rather vroom cars and build block towers. I agree whole heartedly with the author that boys acting out in preschool is because they are anxious or stressed out. Girls withdraw when stressed, boys act out, often aggressively.
If you are ready to hear what this author says then buy the book. He is very strong on dad being a big part of a boys life and goes as far to say if dad is working 55 to 65 hours a week he won't cut it as a dad. This is hard stuff to hear, but if you want your son to grow up to be a good man it will take sacrifice on everyone's part. If we want our daughters to marry good men we need to make sure that we are raising good sons.
not recommended as very one sided.......2007-02-25
i started reading this book and became very distraught as the information the book was implying that I am in for all sorts of trouble and my baby will be emotionally unnavailable if he goes to day care before 3 years old. And this is what ig got in the first 30 pages. I also found as I am a single mum, it had little to no consideration to me (2 pages), and most children these days are brought up by separated parents or single parents, and generally the mother is the sole carer. Luckily for me my mum is a psychologist for relationships and children and clearly expained all you need to give is love and good base foundation with clear rules and be available for your son, and also agreed that this book should not be taken as gospel nor correct and it is very one-sided. for a best selling book, i thought it was terrible
Not quite up to the press. . .. .......2006-11-10
I much prefered "Raising Cain" over this book. There was no real new information, and little advice worth noting.
we've been Doing It Wrong for decades ~ and EveryOne is.......2006-08-20
paying a terrible price...
since when did the feminist yada get turned into Girls Are Better? It's all about girls having equal opportunities blah blah blah...
i never knew WHAT they were talking about -
it's GREAT to be a girl if you're a girl; it's great to be a guy if you're a guy!
why neuter everyone out???
no one seemed to be noticing the father problems running rampant in the life histories of the strident feminists...
unless you cure cancer or win the oscar, all this Women Can Work Too just lead to an insane rise in the cost of buying a house so that women HAD to work if they wanted a nicer home in a better school district...
Way To Go... that's what can happen when women charge ahead without consulting the men...
which just turned the tables, and didn't improve a Thing...
it seemed stupid... but in the last 10-15 years, it's clearly been destructive to be anti-boy, anti-male...
so now the books of single women are titled "Are Men Necessary?"
No... no one is necessary... but if we're gonna be in this thing at all, we might as well be in it Together...

Customer Reviews:
Funniest book I've ever read, every time I read it!.......2004-02-15
I read the Publishers Weekly review at the top of the page and was stunned at the criticism. Whoever wrote that review has no sense of humor, or is just an idiot. This book is the funniest, most enjoyable book I've ever owned. It was a gift in 1990 and is still entertaining me, my family, and my friends 14 years later. The stories are short and concise, so you can pick it up and start reading anywhere in the book. Maybe it's because I've done some theater and film work that I can identify so easily with the stories in the book. But I believe anyone could read this gem and get endless hours of laughter out of it. BUY THE BOOK!
