Customer Reviews:
Superb!.......2007-06-04
I'm so glad I stuck with Lonely Planet (LP) for my 4 day trip to Colorado where we covered everything from Rockies to Colo. Springs, Denver, Boulder and also did rafting and hiking.
This book is great and lists everything that you need. Accomodations, maps, rafting companies, tourist traps, restaurants, etc. Very nice, exactly what you would expect from LP. Although I haven't tried other states yet, I'm looking forward to making a trip to Yellowstone soon ...
Thanks lonely planet!!
Cons: In case you are new to the lonely planet style of writing, let me warn you that if you are looking for a book which is heavily edited and proofread, then you will be disappointed. This lonely planet book is written in a style which is reminiscent of the old LP books - it seems more like a brain dump of everything the writers encountered. They then tried to put most of the things under appropriate headings and did a fair job. This is what I expect from a 'pack and go' book like LP so it works for me. YMMV.
A Norsemans Journey to Rocky Mountains.......2000-02-08
I had the opportunity last year to visit the Rockie mountains. Mainly Colorado and a fast trek throught or should I say to Montana. Having bought Lonely Planets books on both Australia and South Africa earlier (trips that didn't come to fruition, yet) and also having enjoyed some of the tv programs from the same people I thought this would be the best bet for my trip. And it sure was. Now most of my stay in this erea was in Denver so maybe I could have just bought a book on Denver, but as much as I enjoy travel books they tend to be a bit expencive and this offered more value to me. An the books offers more than adequate information on Denver and it's immideate surroundings. Later on the book gave me what information I needed during my brief stay in Montana. The book also informed well about the strain of arriving in the Mile High City (Denver) when you are a lowland dweller, so it didn't come as a shock. Good thing that ! I'm going back to this region of the US, you can count on that and this book will come along on the next trip as well.

Customer Reviews:
Best hiking in the Rockies in one small package.......2006-08-02
My husband and I used this book as the primary reference for three separate hiking & backbacking vacations over the past four years in the Rockies: Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park + Maroon Bells + Holy Cross + Mt Zirkel Wilderness in Colorado, Grand Teton Nat'l Park + Yellowstone in Wyoming, and Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana.
The hikes covered in this book really are the cream of the crop for these areas. The table up front, together with the nice tabs throughout the book help find hikes by area, interest, and difficulty quickly. Doesn't swamp you with quantity, you know that each of these hikes is exceptional--perfect for those of us travelling into the area who have only a week or two to soak up whatever we can. There's even color pictures from some of the most scenic hiking spots in the book to help get you excited to go and give you a little taste of what to expect for that region. Each hike has a map and description with enough detail to almost ensure that you don't go wrong. There's also good information on nearby towns and facilities, local campgrounds, and some detail on permits and when to go.
Only issues: failed to mention that a lot of trails in Glacier may not be accessible without ice ax and crampons until mid July due to snow (certainly we weren't prepared for the trips we really wanted to do when we were there in late June, and the Ptamigan tunnel doesn't open until it has been cleared using dynamite every year), and we did count on being able to buy fuel and other supplies in a town recommended by the book and turned out that the grocery store and camping goods store had almost nothing (this could have been that the book was 4 years old by this time).
I still give the book 5 stars for its excellent coverage of the entire Rocky Mountain area which inspired us to travel to places we might not have otherwise, its usefulness in actually helping us figure out which hikes to do once we got there, and that I would pick it over any of the other books we used for our trips. I picked up Hiking in the Sierra Nevada also by Lonely Planet on the strength of this book, but haven't really tested it yet.
Lonely Planet is the best overview of Rocky Mountain hikes.......2006-05-04
I first used the LP guide in 2005 to safely get me through a solo 6-day hike. (Highline Trail / Ptarmigan Tunnel Loop in Glacier National Park.)
It is excellent. The best guide for the entire Rocky Mountain region.
Once you decide on a specific hike, compare against the available local guidebooks. For Glacier National Park, for example, this is still the best option.
Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park - Spring, 2003 is not bad.
Hiking Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks - Erik Molvar, 1999 - the most widely available guide, is surprisingly weak.
Lonely Planet has the best maps. And the succinct style makes it easy to find what you are looking for.
Disappointing.......2005-07-13
I have used Lonely Planet guides for several years, and have found them to be uniformly excellent -- except for this one. An experienced climber, backpacker and hiker, I recently completed a loop hike described in this book (Needle Mountains, Winnemuche Wilderness in Colorado). Surprisingly, my hiking companion and I found the time estimates given for each section of the hike to be laughably incorrect (i.e., at least 50% too short in duration). I then checked time estimates given for other hikes I have done in past and found the same problem (e.g., backpacking into the Cirque of Towers in the Wind River Range from the Big Sandy trailhead takes 6 hours -- pure rubbish). I am now quite suspicious of the book's accuracy, and wonder whether anyone who wrote the book actually undertook the described hikes. I was also quite annoyed with the gratuitously sniffy descriptions sprinkled throughout the text, such as "the poor food and urban sprawl characteristic of the Rocky Mountain region" -- remember, however, that the book's authors are British. Save your money for better books written by local writers/hikers who actually know the trails.

Book Description
Drawing on a wide range of sources including speeches, press photos, campaign posters, radio interviews, magazine articles, and political biographies, this well-documented analysis explores the persona of Margaret Thatcher and the complex ways in which her politics resonated with the fears and desires of the British electorate. Whether she appears as the doughty "Tory woman," the commonsense housewife, the warrior queen, or the Iron Lady, Thatcher's leadership offers new images of gender and political power. Particular forms of femininity and masculinity are examined to redefine political leadership and national identity.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating study of propaganda.......2004-07-05
This fascinating book studies how the ruling class created an image of Thatcher, trying to sway those whose real interests are totally opposed to the rulers' interests.
Ms Nunn, a Lecturer in Middlesex University's Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies, has reviewed a wide range of material - speeches, press photos, campaign posters, radio interviews, memorabilia, magazine articles and political biographies. She shows how the ruling class's propaganda agencies presented Thatcher as a heroine, taking `tough' decisions for our own good. To do this, they adopted the redtops' image of the heroic scab, alone, embattled, yet ultimately triumphant, `defiantly' standing up against his trade union.
Nunn shows how Thatcher's subservience to the USA was displayed as independence, how her ancient, discredited capitalist thinking was labelled new and progressive. Nunn is good on Thatcher's simplistic moralism, that all economic, political and social problems can be solved by appealing to `good people' to punish `evil-doers', that war, crime and unemployment are due to other people's immorality. But Nunn ignores how Thatcher's fabled housewifely virtues covered the deliberate destruction of industry, and how the enthronement of Thatcher, ironically, undermined many institutions of ruling class power, the EU, Parliament, the judiciary, the BBC.
Nunn unnecessarily uses her subject's fashionable vocabulary of psychoanalysis, which screens rather than describes reality. Like many academics, she privileges her subject: she sees propaganda as determining how people think, rather than appreciating that people's ideas come from their real-life experiences. She never asks how much Thatcher's image really affected the way people thought.
For Thatcherism did have a substance - of turning your back on your trade union, of denouncing (other people's) pay rises, of seeking the easy solution, of avoiding political thought and work, of siding with war and empire, of relying on `capitalism to do it for you'. Of course, that's all so different now under Labour! Politics is never a matter of just passively blaming leaders: our class has to take the responsibility for Britain's future.
Book Description
A searing story about the painful climb one man must make from a life of crime to one filled with honor
Growing up in a devoutly religious family with a father who believed in firm discipline and who was also studying for a Protestant ministry, Joe Loya Jr. seemed a blessed child. When he was seven, however, his life was drastically altered when his mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
During the two years that led to her death, Joe's pious and studious father became more and more violent, brutally beating his two young sons. This contradiction haunted Joe for years until one day, at age sixteen, during a particularly severe beating, he finally retaliated and stabbed his father in the neck.
For Joe, this was the starting point of a life of crime: petty theft, forgery, fraud, and ultimately, bank robbery. When Joe was finally arrested after holding up his twenty-fourth bank, he was sent to prison, where he would serve seven years.
In prison, his criminal behavior only got worse, as he began to deal drugs, smuggle weapons, and even assault fellow prisoners, until he was placed in solitary confinement, the lowest of lows even for convicts. There, alone in his cell for two years, he was finally able to forgive his father, finding clarity, cultural insight, and redemption through writing.
During a soulful correspondence with acclaimed author Richard Rodriguez, Loya ultimately found that he wasn't alone in his struggle to discover his identity, and that anger is sometimes the doorway toward realizing one's self and one's purpose.
Although the images that propel an angry young man toward a life of crime may leave readers shuddering, the power of Joe Loya's incredible story will surely remind us that we must not lose hope that wayward sons and daughters may one day return home.
Customer Reviews:
Guaranteed not to be a "Spotlight Review".......2006-07-19
I don't think Joe Loya does a real good job explaining how he made the transition from a bespectacled bookish nerd to a big bad dude in prison. All he did before getting locked up was hold up female tellers and stab his hapless and unarmed dad with a kitchen knife. A guy like that is more likely to be picked on and smacked around by other prisoners than becoming a shot-calling big baller. (And another thing...why does every nickel 'n dime Chicano convict want to write poetry?)
What the heck does "honesty is all aspects" mean?.......2005-10-19
Maybe she meant to say "honesty in all aspects." Whatever she meant, you really can't believe anything that a woman who names herself "P.Loya" writes anyway, even if she claims to have "lived it." P.Loya was probably locked up in some sorry little women's facility like Perryville where all they do is comb their hair and paint their nails. But back to this book...I didn't like it. It was not worth the 99¢ I paid to salvage it from the bargain book bin at Albertsons. For a more believable account of prison life I would recommend "A Place to Stand" by Jimmy Santiago Baca.
Honesty is all aspects.......2005-07-10
I'm writing this review, because I lived it. I lived with Joe and know that this book is true, and the honesty with which this book is written can only be appreciated by people willing to take a look at their lives and what their doing to move forward from mistakes they have made. Joe's life can be seen, and often is, as a study on how the power of believing in yourself and change can make you a better person. Kudos to my big brother for changing his life and becoming a contributor to society. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever been in a domestic violent situation, or knows someone who is suffering in one.
honest, terrifying, moving.......2005-06-25
reading this memoir i was struck by the honesty: the author doesn't sugar coat anything: neither his terrible behavior, nor the difficulty of the path back. an impressive work--not only for the story it tells, but also for the artful way in which it is written.
This book deserves one star........2005-05-17
I didn't like this book either. I can't imagine anyone giving it more than one star.

Book Description
For anyone who needs a little help finding love, this book is the ultimate dating makeover kit!
The line at Starbucks. The movies. The Internet. Even the dry cleaners... there are dozens of opportunites to seize the date, but millions of lonely singles pass them by!
David Wygant shows readers just how easy it can be to overcome fear and meet new people in their daily routines. David explains the three simple steps to getting a date with ease: being prepared, being aware, and making contact.
Always Talk to Strangers breaks away from pop psychology, gimmicks, and rules to offer concrete information on how single people actually meet--and successfully date--other singles. No mind games, cheap tricks, or corny pickup lines here. Just common sense, and specific information on:
- Where to go to meet people, and when
- Why bars and clubs are the worst places to get a date
- Overcoming fear and negative thinking
- Using props to start a natural conversation
- Making a great first impression
- Spotting opportunity--and going for it!
Customer Reviews:
Common sense? Of course. Should you pick this book up? Absolutely........2007-02-25
It always baffles me as to the complaints about dating books. Did anyone really think there was that one book that would open up the clouds with profound dating revelations? Yes, this is coming from someone that "surprisingly" isn't the author of the book or a planted review.
At any rate, Wygant's book isn't ground-breaking and that's the prime reason for the four star rating. However, for the remaining stars left, Wygant's book packs as much useful dating advice than most books out there. Always Talk to Strangers provides much common sense such as dressing well, smiling, and not being afraid to talk to people. However, it's the way Wygant goes about all of this that's helpful since many of us weren't born with common sense or taught half of these truths in junior high.
For me, the personal grooming/hygiene sections are extremely self-explanatory and for me useless. Sadly enough, I have more than a few friends that could take a solid look at this section.
Among the most helpful sections are where to meet women, props to use in conversation, and varying techniques to "close the deal" after you've been talking to a woman for a while. In addition, Wygant poses several different questions that you should ask yourself whenever approaching a woman that you fear rejection from. Furthermore, there are great sections on both internet dating and blind dating that are definitely useful.
Is a majority of this common sense? The first few sections on hygiene, grooming , physical/mental makeover, and dating myths are. However, the rest of the book had a lot of stuff I'd given little thought to or never thought of altogether. If you call that common sense, then so be it. However, most of Wygant's advice has definitely helped improve my perspective on dating/picking up women. For the price of $3-4 on Amazon Marketplace, what have you really got to lose?
-Travis.
Double your dating.......2007-02-09
I run a singles organization, and am constantly in search of good reference materials. I happened to get an ebook online from a man called David Deangelo who sells and markets a whole line of materials of this same genre. Part of his program consists of audio CDs with dating gurus, one of which was David Wygant. I kept this CD in my car for over a month literally laughing at that great material. In the interview David came across as confident, relaxed, and inventive. I only wish this book was as good as his interview, but it does highlight all the basics of his philosophy in meeting a partner. He covers all aspects, atttitude(sometimes called inner game), attire(what to wear), presentation(the importance of good hygiene), and more. I feel alot of people can benefit from his audacity, and mantra. However this book falls short in it's own merit from it's approach, I only wish whoever was his writting coach(since David himself is not a writer), would have brought out more of his humor thoughout the book with lots of examples or fun stories. Overall this is a good book, which will give most people the necessities they need to find their perfect someone.
Common Sense 101.......2006-09-05
Men, cut that mullet or trim that ponytail! (p. 42) Women, teased hair is out! (p. 41) (Just in case anyone has been asleep since the B-52s debuted or models her hair style from Gary Larson cartoons.) And not only does dating coach David Wygant tell daters to put a Q-tip in your ear, he gives you step-by-step instructions on p. 44. And, men and women, for goodness sake, trim that nose hair! (p. 49.)
Get the feeling the advice in this book is rather basic, common sense stuff? You're right. Granted, it's not all about grooming, although most of those tips are common sense as well. Advice includes how to: fill out internet profiles, start conversations with anyone (and gain the courage to do so), ask for phone numbers, and tell if someone's single. Hint - that wedding ring is a BIG clue (p. 158). But Wygant goes beyond the wedding ring to less obvious clues.
I have mixed feelings about the book. It's virtually all good advice, although I know happily married guys with ponytails. And there's none of the silly dating "play hard to get" Rules type of advice. I would think a lot of people will already know most of this stuff (although I've been on some dates from hell with guys who didn't). Anyway, here it is in one place to possibly serve as a motivator or refresher to someone who is just entering the dating scene or who has been out of it a while. It's a particularly good book for folks who are shy or who have difficulty starting conversations with the opposite sex. I suggest checking it out of the library first, lest you purchase this book only to find you knew about 98% of this stuff.
A Response to Mr. Greenstein.......2006-09-04
Mr. Greenstein wasn't being accurate earlier with regard to the section, "The Entitlement Myth." Although we respect his opinion, we beleive he has taken our work out of context. Here are the first few paragraphs of that section for future potential readers.
"I can't tell you how many clients have come to me and said, "David, you're my last resort. I've done the right things. I've been a good person. Yet, nothing ever happens to me. I never get asked out. I'm alone and I'm tired of being alone. Aren't I entitled to a little happiness?" My response to them is a resounding, "No."
People aren't entitled to happiness. People have to work for happiness just as they have to work for a successful career, and in the very same way they have to work and save for a house, a car, a stereo, retirement, or even to maintain friendships.
When you believe you're entitled to something, you won't go after it. You passively wait around hoping whatever you feel entitled to will be handed to you on a silver platter. When no one serves it up to you, you become angry, upset, and frustrated. "Damn it," you proclaim. "I'm a good person. I do the right things. I'm entitled to this." You become reactive, instead of proactive."
You be the judge.
Pretty good, actually.......2006-08-24
I bought this along with a few other self-help books, and this one was probably the most realistic. The overall tone is sincere but firm, which I think is a good thing especially with a sometimes delicate subject like dating and love. I think the title may be a little misleading, and perhaps a more fitting one would be along the lines of "Dating Advice for Nice People," but I guess I can't critique that since titles are supposed to catch your attention and well, I own the book now.
Like I mentioned, this is a good book for nice folks -- those of us who aren't exactly the flirtatious type. It really appeals to people like myself who have always thought "Well, it will happen when it happens" and are now in the mind frame of "I want to make it happen, now." While I can't say from first-hand experience that the advice and tips actually work, I can honestly say that they seem reasonable. I like how realistic he is about dating, and this book really put into perspective what it might be like to be "proactive" and ask a person out.
One thing I love about this book is that it warns against going to bars to find a date. For those of us who aren't that impressed with alcohol and don't see a get-together primarily based on the presence of booze appealing, this is a relief to read. He shows that it's possible to meet people in everyday places like the coffee shop, the movie theater and even the university library.
It's easy to read because the sections are divided to help you read what you want and pass over what you don't want to see. For example, I have no interest in online dating and getting set up on blind dates. It was easy to skip those parts because I just moved on to the chapter for meeting people on my own.
It's a good book. I actually read the whole book cover-to-cover (minus the two sections stated above) in one sitting and felt satisfied with what I had learned.
