Book Description
Praise for the First Edition--
Association of American Publishers Professional and Scholarly Division Award Winner (Life Sciences)
"One of the ten best horticultural books of the century."--The Washington Post
"Diseases of Trees and Shrubs is by far the best book currently available for the horticulturist, arborist, or forester who wishes to identify disorders of forest and shade trees and woody ornamentals."--The Public Garden
"It may be used by anyone with knowledge of general biology as well as by someone with specialized plant knowledge for diagnosing plant disease problems. Highly recommended."--Library Journal
"This book is a remarkable contribution to the literature on tree pathology, providing a valuable source of reference on tree disease for all with an interest in the subject. It must surely be almost obligatory reading for the specialist tree pathologist, and will prove of great value to all tree care professionals. . . . It will fascinate any tree lovers who wish to find out more about the diseases and disorders that may afflict trees."--Arboricultural Journal
"It is well written and it is illustrated with photographs of such high quality that in this respect it could be described as a `coffee table' book of forest pathology."--Forestry
First published in 1987, Diseases of Trees and Shrubs has become a standard reference for plant health specialists, plant diagnosticians, horticulturists, arborists, foresters, and their students. Now thoroughly revised, fully updated, and illustrated with more than 2200 digitally optimized color images in 261 full-color plates and more than 350 black-and-white photographs and drawings, the second edition is an unrivalled survey of the diseases of forest and shade trees and woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada. The book is both an authoritative reference book and a powerful diagnostic tool. Organized according to type of disease-inducing agent, the second edition is also designed to be helpful in classroom and field instruction. Symptoms, signs, and cycles of hundreds of diseases are described and microscopic features of many pathogens are depicted in photos and line drawings. A searchable CD-ROM included with the book contains bibliographic entries for more than 4500 works that readers can consult for additional information or images. This remarkable scholarly work--praised as one of the best horticultural books of the twentieth century--lays claim to the same accolade for the twenty-first century.

Invaluable.......2007-02-11
Anybody in the plant diagnostics or pathology field must have this book on their shelf.
An update that was well worth waiting for!.......2007-02-08
Here is another one for my short list of horticulture references.
As someone who makes a living looking at these diseases, let me tell you: The photos are top notch! The pictures alone tell the bulk of the story and really make this book worth it. All the latest diseases are here including Sudden Oak Death. A text like this could easily be beyond the understanding of most gardeners, but the authors use an excellent mix of common and scientific names and a wealth of descriptive text to bring things back to earth. Be a little careful making a field diagnosis from just the photos. A quick look through the book, especially the last section on physical and environmental damage, will demonstrate that a lot of things look alike.
An included CD contains a complete reference list in a 333 page Word document, but nothing else. This is very useful if you are looking for more information or a specific cross-reference.
My ONLY complaint is that the plants and diseases are combined into one index rather then two like the similar book "Insects that feed on Trees and Shrubs".
A comprehensive study of diseases and their (mis) diagnosis.......1998-08-24
This book compiles a GREAT deal of useful information about plant pathology. It covers, as any good work about plant disease should, fertilization, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental factors such as drought, freezing, lightning, air pollution, water contamination etc. before attempting to fix the problem, the work stresses the causal effects and ,similarly, the visual pitfalls that may provide evidence of an unseen insect symptom (galling, nematodes, etc.) The work was written mainly for the temperate zone, but using it in my home sub-tropics was an eye-opener! Reccomended reading for Horticulturalists in the upper echelon, or for Pathologists as a reference, and a reminder to look to the outlying areas for an answer, It's always there!

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Country, Great Book.......2002-05-26
Our Texas Hill Country is indeed a little-known source of beauty to outsiders. Because of its depressed condition for decades in the past it was overlook even by Texans. Today, however, we are able to see this area for what it is: rolling hills, tumbling streams and rivers, and a great view around so many curves in its small secondary roads. Though West Texas is well-known for Big Bend, the sheer area of this part of our State, combined with sparse population, means all of us can enjoy peace and solitude--this is where the South turns into the Southwest.
Mr. Ford's book reflects a love of the area, combined with excellent directions and documentation of sights. The book is divided into geographic areas, and within those areas, into tours of a day or longer. He has also done an excellent job of rating the difficulty of the tours, and why he has come to those conclusions.
Though I have only cycled a small amount of this area, I would also recommend this book for those who would like to tour by car. I've traveled almost this entire area by car and wish I'd had this guide then. Additionally, I found the photography very well-done--particularly in view of the price of the book.
This book is a valuable resource, and a terrific buy for the price!
These are great rides.......2002-01-01
I have cycled only a few of the book's listed road rides in the Hill Country but I am familiar with portions of several other roads in the Hill Country and West Texas via automobile. These are truly great rides with well-thought directions and information. It's so good that when Mr. Ford says you will have to "shoo" sheep and livestock from the road, it really must be done! I eagerly await even more rides with the next edition of the book.

"Nineteen seventy-four was a bad time to go crazy," reads the gripping first line in this thoroughly unique memoir by Virginia Holman, a frequent contributor to magazines such as Redbook and Self. But despite that sentence and the suggestion of the title (Patty Hearst is a metaphor here, not a character), this work of "creative nonfiction" is extremely personal rather than generational. As with The Liar's Club by Mary Karr (whose Spartan but poetic prose Holman sometimes recalls), the strength of Rescuing Patty Hearst is that it finds universality in a very specific situation and story.
One year after the famous heiress's celebrated kidnapping, in the midst of Watergate and the other turbulent events of America's most misunderstood era, the author's mother retreated with her two daughters to a rustic cabin in rural Virginia, thoroughly convinced that the voices in her head were directing her to establish a field hospital in preparation for a cataclysmic war that never came. The book proceeds to chart Holman's mother's extended and heartbreakingly sad battle with schizophrenia, and its impact on her seemingly typical middle-class American family. The author's response progresses from detached bemusement, to horror and revulsion, and to a warm understanding and acceptance without ever becoming callous, maudlin, or romantic. Her recollections make for a consistently riveting story, while leaving the reader with a deep and profound understanding of the true tragedies and frustrating complexities of severe mental illness. --Jim DeRogatis
Book Description
In 1975, one year after Patty Hearst and her captors robbed Hibernia National Bank, a second kidnapping took place far from the glare of the headlines. Virginia Holman's mother, in the thrall of psychosis, spirited her two daughters to a cottage on the Virginia Peninsula, painted the windows black, and set up the house as a MASH unit for a secret war. A war that never came. The family -- captive to her mother's schizophrenia and a legal system that refused to intervene -- remained there for more than three years.
"What sets this book apart," the Hartford Courant observed, "is Virginia's voice...brave, smart, tough." Reviewers nationwide have praised Holman's "riveting," "endearing," and "wryly humorous" story of a young girl caught in the whirlwind of madness -- a girl who chooses a brainwashed heiress as her role model. Holman's memoir vividly and brilliantly evokes the interior worlds of the sane and the insane and the delicate membrane in between. An essential exploration of identity, captivity, and love, Rescuing Patty Hearst will inspire readers' faith in the resilience of one family's spirit to survive and thrive even in the direst of circumstances.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing new told here.......2007-08-30
I thought this book we tell me something new that I didn't know about mental illness but it didn't really do that.
Abrupt Reality.......2007-08-04
Holman's autobiography of her childhood abuse at the hands of a schizophrenic mother is surprisingly tame: Holman writes with considerable emotional distance, as if she's still uneasy about approaching the memories. This tone makes the book read more like fiction than reality at times. Unlike many memoir writers, Holman talks little about her childhood emotions, instead opting to probe into the "why's" of the events: why her father didn't "save" her from her crazy mother, why Holman herself didn't flee, etc. It makes for an interesting psychological tale. However, by the same token it prevents readers from getting too emotionally tied to the book and its young, suffering Virginia.
Holman's tactic of switching abruptly back and forth between the present and her childhood also does some major damage to the book's flow. The same goes for the book's structure: Holman divides her story into short chapters, many of them only 2-3 pages long.
Still, anyone with a relative suffering from a mental illness--particularly illnesses as quirky and unpredictable as schizophrenia, will find a familiar voice in Holman's childhood self and will recognize all too well her adult frustrations with finding logic in the illogical waters of her experiences.
A rare glimpse at growing up as the child of a schizophrenic..........2007-02-11
When she was eight years old, Gingie was forced to leave town with her mother Molly, a schizophrenic under the delusion that she was needed to set up a makeshift hospital for war children. Molly took Gingie and her baby sister Emma, who was only a year old, to the family's Virginia summer cottage, and for several years, forced Gingie to humor her in collecting supplies, adapting their home and going along with a variety of delusions as she began to descend more and more into the illness.
Meanwhile, Gingie's father remained in the family's original home, visiting on weekends. After he requested a divorce, he told his daughters he couldn't take them, because the law usually ruled in favor of the mothers. That may have been true in the mid-1970s, but what jury could possibly recommend two little girls remain in the custody of a schizophrenic? It seems odd, how the girls' father knew first-hand what they were undergoing, but did nothing to remove them from the situation.
All the while, Gingie keeps thinking of Patty Hearst, the heiress who was kidnapped and found robbing a bank with her captors the previous year. She wonders what really happened to Patty; did she cooperate of her own free will? Was she brainwashed? Did she want to get away? Gingie figures it's not too different from her own situation.
Interspersed between Gingie's recollections are brief comments from the adult Virginia. Although happily married and doing well in life, she's unable to stop thinking about her childhood. Why did it have to happen? If it happened to her mother, well after she entered her thirties and had children, could it happen to *her*?
An intriguing read, giving a vivid picture of life with a mentally ill person in control of the situation...
Childhood shaped by mental illness.......2007-01-22
At first when Gingie's mother begins to show signs of becoming delusional, it's a bit like an adventure. Gingie and her sister Emma is one. When their mother, in the early stages of schizophrenia, announces they must be vigilant and look for clues, it seems to Gingie that they are plunged into an exciting world, like Nancy Drew, where anything could mean something important. They walk though the woods, examining the trash they find, and Gingie's mother records everything in her notebook.
Life continues to get stranger and stranger, though. Gingie's mother moves her daughters into their summer cottage and paints the windows black, confiding in her that they have been chosen to create a field hospital for the war orphans who will be arriving any day. For years Gingie endures night maneuvers and quizzes on the contents of the first aid book her mother expects her to learn, so she will be able to help treat the war children.
Despite this weirdness in her childhood, other parts of Gingie's life are remarkably normal. She plays with her cousins who live nearby, attends school and worries about making friends. Nobody seems to be concerned with her mother's increasingly strange behavior.
Although Gingie's experience was worrisome, I didn't get a feeling of urgent danger from her story. She described some of the crazy things her mother did, like refusing to leave their cottage during a flood, or giving her sister a glass of bleach to drink, or, much later, physically attacking Gingie when she was visiting from college, but she didn't give the impression that the situation was dire. I think this made the story less dramatic than it could have been, because the narrator didn't seem overly horrified by the effects of her mother's mental illness.
Different.......2006-03-11
This book chronicles the experiences of one family when the mother develops schizophrenia after giving birth to her second child. Unable to convince the mother to get psychiatric help and without the legal means to force her to do say, the family is instead forced to simply stand by as her delusions slowly take over their mother's life, and, in the process, also their own.
Quote: "I think about this now: I was seen at my worst and loved. Forgiven. This still astounds me. And it makes me want to be kinder to people, more compassionate. I begin to wonder: Can I find a way to forgive my mother for being so sick?"
I thought this book was extremely interesting and also very saddening because, as it is written by the family's older daughter, the reader gets a glimpse into how schizophrenia affects both the person who is diagnosed with the condition and the people who love and surround the individual. The daughter finds that she is able to connect with her mother less and less until she is forced to choose between having nothing to share with her mother or being a part of her mother's delusions.

Done in a well-wriiten, colorful way the author answered all my questions. It was full of useful info. and colorful details. The celebrity doggie profiles were a hoot. What charmed me the most was the first person doggie pros. I feel like I got inside my Jake's poop-eating brain.

Book Description
A practical and inspiring guide.
Wildlife gardening books have traditionally focused on large gardens in rural areas where there is ample space to plant large trees and hedges. For many new gardeners or those living in urban areas, working with a small space presents a variety of challenges when trying to attract beneficial wildlife.
Wildlife-Friendly Plants is a practical guide specifically designed to help gardeners chose the best plants for encouraging and supporting wildlife. By attracting beneficial wildlife, gardeners can eliminate the use of a range of chemicals and create a healthier environment. This book is intended for any size garden from large to small in the city or country.
Wildlife-Friendly Plants includes:
- Beautifully photographed directory of wildlife friendly plants
- Helpful step-by-step projects for planting, pruning and dividing
- Extended backflap with a guide to the symbols used throughout the book.
Many of these plants are perfect for use in small spaces, such as a patio, terrace or window box. With the valuable suggestions for use, planting and maintenance, anyone can create a safe haven for beneficial insects, amphibians and birds.
Wildlife-Friendly Plants is the ideal book for gardening and wildlife enthusiasts everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful pictures, lite prose.......2006-03-02
For 12 pages, the book discusses the interaction of plants and wildlife. Another 12 pages offer basic tips on planting, plus a few projects. The remaining 115 pages offer 'plant directory'. Each plant gets 1-2 pages, including a wonderful color photos. The photos are magnificent, but the discussion relatively uninformative.
I found "Great Garden Companions : A Companion-Planting System for a Beautiful, Chemical-Free Vegetable Garden" by Sally Jean Cunningham far more helpful.
From soil preparation to choosing the right plants.......2005-02-10
Many home gardeners wish to create a natural habitat for wildlife but don't know how: Rosemary Creeser's bright Wildlife Friendly Plants: Make Your Garden A Haven For Beneficial Insects, Amphibians And Birds covers plants which invite not only birds, but beneficial insects and amphibians, expanding the number of creatures which fall under the 'beneficial' flag. Contrasting colors, scents, and shapes are the heart of creating such a sanctuary, and Creeser's practical advise covers everything from soil preparation to choosing the right plants that go together.
The joys of plants and animals.......2004-11-17
This is a wonderful book that makes you think about which plants to select and grow in your garden, backyard, roof top or balcony with a view not just for the colors, fragances and beauty they bring to you as a human but also what kinds of wildlife they can attract to also enjoy the fragances, blooms, blossoms and nectars they provide.
The guidance on how to do this throughout the book is clear and beautifully illustrated, with enticing descriptions of nectar-rich plants for attracting different species, from bees to birds throughout the year. Suggestions like planting a creeping thyme that is nectar-rich in the small crevices between the stones on a gravel path to enable butterflies to bask in the early morning sunshine provides a quite different way of thinking about what to plant in a garden. Not just to enrichen your own experience but also provide a haven, a home and a food supply for insects.
The extensive plant directory also includes a wonderful set of home drawn (and easy to understand) set of symbols for both plant and wildlife attributes - my favorite being the kinky shaped caterpillar. Each plant is described in terms of the region it will grow in, where to plant it and how to care for it to attract a range of wildlife.
Living in the mid-west of the USA, I was intrigued to see what plant plus wildife combos I could experiment with. I am squarely in zone 5 and was pleased to see from the list of plants that most would attract a range of wildlife, although sadly Indiana is not suitable for growing the poached egg plant (limnanthes douglasii) which thrives further south.
This book will greatly appeal to those who are interested in encouraging (and discouraging) certain kinds of insects, amphibians and birds to their gardens. While the advice suggests postponing deadheading and trimming spent flowers till a little later in the season (to encourage the wildlife to drink the remaining nectar) the trade-off in doing so is to provide wildlife with both food and a place to hibernate over winter without disruption. What better form of altruism. This book provides a different way of thinking about flaura and fauna, especially if you are curious about attracting wildlife to your garden.

The leading experts on parent-child communication show parents and teachers how to motivate kids to learn and succeed in school.
Using the unique communication strategies, down-to-earth dialogues, and delightful cartoons that are the hallmark of their multimillion-copy bestseller How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish show parents and teachers how to help children handle the everyday problems that interfere with learning.
This breakthrough book demonstrates how parents and teachers can join forces to inspire kids to be self-directed, self-disciplined, and responsive to the wonders of learning.
Customer Reviews:
The Power of True Listening.......2007-10-16
"How to Talk So Kids Can Learn" caught my eye when I was looking for a
book to read. Communicating with children has been something that's intrigued me. I don't have any kids of my own but my boyfriend has two and I want to be able to communicate with them to the best of my ability. Kids are little beings who absorb everything around them, which in turn, creates who they become. I'd often ask myself " What is the right way to communicate with kids?" or " Is there a "right" way?"
The authors, Faber and Mazlish, have some wonderful suggestions on how to
engage and truly listen to kids. Just being with kids and allowing them to
be who they are can create a truly positive relationship and bond. I have
found that when I'm "in the moment" with them, I can be appropriate to all situations.
Another book that I recommend is Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment by Ariel & Shya Kane. This book has just been released and it is fantastic. Through stories and experiences it provides keys on how to truly listen and be available for whatever comes your way. It is possible that when you live your life in the moment, magic can happen in all relationships: the one with yourself and the people around you.
A must read for parents & teachers.......2007-08-19
This book explains how to deal with kids. Some of the tips and suggestions given in this book can not only be used for kids, but also for adults. It teaches you how to motivate kids and make a positive re-enforcement. There were several interesting situations given as examples. I would recommend this book for all parents & teachers.
Pretty good advice.......2007-07-17
I ordered this book to complete an education credit, and I was pleasantly surprised with it. I figured it would be a lot of psycho-babble, and just be loaded with education buzz words. The examples they gave were a little hokey, and some of them are definitely fiction, but overall, it did make me sit back and think about how I communicate with kids.
Communicating With Students.......2007-05-09
Teachers and parents will find tips to help them communicate better with children. They'll learn how to help kids learn through better communication.
A Great Asset.......2007-03-18
"How to Talk So Kids Can Learn" is a great asset for educators and parents. Told through a story of a young teacher, the book covers different issues in teaching, like cooperation, praise, punishment, and problem-solving. The authors highlight the importance of acknowledging the feelings and opinions of children in communication, especially when a child needs the help of an adult (for example, with planning, studying, doing homework, following rules.) The principal idea of responsible and respectful communication is developed throughout the book with various examples and comics that bring the reader closer to the matter. At times, though, the examples seem to be rather simplified. However, I am not sure this is an actual drawback, since the book does not purport to be an encyclopedia of behavior. Rather, it is an introduction to a better way of talking to children. "How to Talk..." provides the reader with skills that can be applied in a wider context than the one presented in the book. Few texts leave the reader with so much.
Book Description
The private Andy Warhol talks: about love, sex, food, beauty, fame, work, money, success; about New York and America; and about himself--his childhood in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, good times and bad times in the Big Apple, the explosion of his career in the sixties, and life among celebrities.

Ghostwritten by Bob Colacello and Pat Hackett.......2007-07-03
According to page 208 of the Warhol Biography 'Holy Terror; Andy Warhol Close Up' by Bob Colacello (1990), Warhol delegated the actual writing of the book to Colacello and Pat Hackett. Colacello wrote the first draft and Hackett wrote the version that was published. Warhol's contribution was to set up the deal, offer a few suggestions and one-liners, and read the finished pages before they were sent off to the publisher.
If a silkscreen created by Warhol's assistants (carefully aping his art style) but signed by Warhol is still "authentic," does that mean an autobiography written by Warhol's assistants (carefully aping his speaking style) but credited to Warhol on the cover is still an "authentic" autobiography?
Colacello's biography also reveals that some of the text in the book was borrowed from press clippings written about Warhol. Page 207: "It was Andy's idea to cull phrases from the Factory clippings scrapbook to describe what he saw in his mirror: 'The affectless gaze... the wasted pallor... the childlike, gum-chewing naivete... the slightly sinister aura... the long bony arms, so white they looked bleached...'"
Like nearly all of Warhol's art, his Philosophy was our idea of Warhol, rearranged and reflected back at us. When explaining why he covered the original Factory with silver, Warhol offered a list of reasons ending with "...most of all, silver represents narcissism. Silver is the color of a mirror."
straight from the master.......2007-04-07
I used to think that Andy Warhol was not a real artist, only a great self promoter. This book, written in his own words, proved my prejudice to be completely wrong and uncalled for. Much of what we encounter today in popular culture was forecasted in this book by Warhol. If only the best economists could even be 10 percent as right about their forecasts!
Andy Would Be Pleased.......2007-02-21
I had a great buying experience. The book was in mint condition and came within a reasonable time.
Loved this quirky read!.......2006-12-07
I was hanging out at a Borders one afternoon when i got hold of this book and I read all 200 something pages in a few intense hours! I'm sure the borders staff didnt appreciate me reading this gem for free but I honestly couldn't peel myself from it. What a character this Warhol guy was. Check this one out!!!
Of course it's brilliant, and it's b.s., which is why it's brilliant..........2006-09-19
Seriously, at a certain point when I was around 18 or 19, this was my Bible, or my Little Red Book - I and a handful of friends (Warhol died at about the same time) took every syllable here very, very seriously.
This is kinda funny to me now, but it's a great book still, a truly unique cultural artifact. Warhol - as always maintains the trademark deadpan aloofness here, which had a few odd purposes beyond simply looking cool: there were rare instances when he'd drop his guard and a hint of social relevance would enter the frame, which did run contrary to most of what Warhol did, here especially. Doing so would turn art into something didactic, and - as a joke doesn't work if you have to explain the punch line, art flops if you have to lead your viewers, or readers, by the hand into your meaning. Thus Warhol's stylish glibness and affected cool served a brilliant purpose - it made demands of everyone who came into contact with it.
Here we have Warhol's epigrams - spread out like some artboy approximation of 'Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung,' all about equally quotable, useless, devoid of literary merit, yet (unlike the leaden and ideologically bankrupt Chairman) also stylish and memorable, even at their most zoned out.
The other great method behind Warhol's facades is here as well - the same impulse that turned canned soup into the artworks of a once very, very poor 2nd-generation immigrant's child (if you were going hungry, Campell's soup would in fact become, and possibly remain, a beautiful thing, and we all know that beautiful things are and always will be one of the most fitting of subjects for art). These cryptic sayings and jottings all seem constructed to get us all to see the small stuff for what it is, and learn to appreciate it for that.
Warhol was like Elvis - all things to all people. And about as maddening, contradictory and semiotically intriguing as Elvis. This slim little book is one of his strangest and most magnificent achievements.
