        Book Description

Frances McGovern gives an entertaining account of her life and the colorful people she knew in local, state, and national politics, from her start as a young lawyer in 1949 through 1964 when she quit politics after an unsuccessful run for Congress. An insightful memoir from an era when the industrial Midwest still dominated American politics and men dominated the industrial Midwest, McGovern illustrates just how fun, cheap, and easy local politics could be.
Go with her to covered dish suppers, picnics, and church basements, to the Ohio House of Representatives where she served three terms, the Ohio Public Utilities Commission, and two of the century's most exciting Democratic National Conventions. Join her as she takes the Kennedy women through Ohio in 1960. Share her rides with Hubert Humphrey in Barberton and President Johnson in Akron, and her tea party for Lady Bird at the old Mayflower Hotel.
Best of All, enjoy her stories of political figures of both parties--a refreshing behind the scenes look at politics on a local and state level.

        Book Description

In this outstanding work, Michael Wallis magnificently recreates the vanished, impoverished world of Dustbowl America that has not been as poignantly rendered in prose since John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. Wallis evokes the hard times of the era of Steinbeck as he follows the life of Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd from his coming of age at a time when there were no jobs and no food, to his decent into petty crime, bootlegging, his murders, jail terms, and his own brutal slaying by the FBI in an Ohio field in 1934 at the age of thirty. Pretty Boy is a social history at its best, portraying, with a sweepings style, the larger story of the hardscrabble farmers whose lives were so intolerably shattered by Depression.

4 out of 5 stars A personal portrait of the life of Choc Floyd.......2007-02-13

This book provides a portrait of the life of Choc Floyd mainly from the perspective of his family and friends, and fair enough as their views and memories have a right to be published too. It is too broad a brush and too simple to paint a man as completely without merit or morals and this book restores some balance and looks at his life, the decisions he made; his relationships with family and friends and of course his criminal activities.

That said; he could kill ruthlessly when required and made his a lot of his living by robbing banks and terrorising innocent people this book does not deny he did many wrong things but he was wrongly blamed for some crimes he probably had nothing to do with. Two claims in this book l wish to comment on.

The books asserts he has nothing to do with the Kansas City Union massacre in 1933, where as other books and some magazines make the claim he was involved in it. If he was involved then it was totally out of sync with his previous criminal activities, he may have been there but it does not seem right. The second point is by a East Liverpool policeman, l think Chester Smith, who was present with the Feds when Floyd was shot and captured, (and also claims to have fired two shots that wounded Floyd and bought him down) claimed publicly many years later, after Purvis and Hoover has passed away that Melvin Purvis, ordered one of his federal agents to execute a wounded Floyd lying on the ground. This is an amazing claim and a shaky one, looking at the character and career of Purvis l find this one unbelievable; that said an interesting book for true crime buffs.

        5 out of 5 stars SUPERB BIO!.......2001-11-13

This is without question the best biography I have come across in many years. I strongly suggest anyone who has even an inkling of interest in modern American history make it a point to get this book and read it. They will not be disapponited.

3 out of 5 stars Too Sweeping, Lack of Objectivity.......2001-07-23

The first major biography of Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd is a sweeping "life and times" effort, a well-researched opus that concentrates as much on early 1900's-Depression era America as on a straight biography of Floyd. It's too bad because Floyd himself deserved a more detailed treatment, as well as a more objective one. Much of the information on Floyd came from family and friends and, while this is interesting and informative, one gets the distinct impression that Wallis got too close to his subject, blinded perhaps by the folkloric image of Floyd as a Southwestern Depression Robin Hood. This is somewhat understandable. Floyd was falsely accused in his own day of many atrocious crimes, such as the "Young brothers' massacre," but the fact remains that he was a ruthless killer as well as a bank robber and that a preponderance of evidence exists suggesting Floyd's guilt in the Kansas City Union Station massacre. Wallis ignores this evidence, accessible in thousands of pages of FBI files he claims to have read, and instead builds straws for Floyd's innocence in this crime. Such as relying on the testimony of "Blackie" Audett, a minor bank burglar of the period and notorious liar, who claimed to have witnessed the massacre but whose story is shot full of holes. Audett was in prison at the time of the shooting and one of the men he named as an "actual" killer had been murdered over two years earlier. This doesn't stop Wallis in his determination to vindicate his Robin Hood idol. In all, it's a nice professional work--a thick book with some nice photos, a bibliography and an index. It could have been much better, as evidenced by the more recent The Life and Death of Pretty Boy Floyd by Jeffery King.

        5 out of 5 stars A very interesting and well-researched book........2001-01-26

I became interested in "Pretty Boy Floyd" when I found out his mother was distantly related to my family and I was researching my family. He was raised 25 miles from where I live until his family moved to Oklahoma. There was mention of the town in the book and some of the mischief he got in to. The house they lived in still stands. I was able to use some of the information from the book to go in my family tree. The book was very well written and seemed to be accurate in the account given of his life. I felt like I had known him from the reading of this book and feel he was unjustly killed at the end. His mother was treated unfairly about the way the funeral took care of his body. The pictures in the book of his family in the younger days were very good pictures. I didn't especially care for the ones at the funeral home where he was more or less put on display. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the history and hardships that occurred during the early part of the century.I am sure I will read this book again. It was hard to put down when I read it the first time.

3 out of 5 stars A Must Read For New & Old Gecko Owners........2005-07-29

This book has many nice gecko pictures (some not of leopard geckos)except for the brutal pictures of geckos being eaten by creepy predators like gigantic spiders and scorpians. Don't worry, the pictures are in the back (or more specifically, page 55). Because of those pictures, it's not the best book for young children that don't understand "The Circle Of Life".
Besides the pictures, it has the perfect amount of information for old and new gecko owners. The author talks to you like a best friend and each chapter is useful in some way.

              2.Housing Leopard Geckos
3.Food and Water (WARNING MICE LOVERS: This has pics of baby mice being eaten by geckos. Don't worry, baby mice for food is optional.)
              4.Breeding
5.Health (and how to cure the problems if they happen)
6.Other Geckos (this is where the bad pics are!)
              And a glossary.
Besides the interesting pics that can break a heart and the health problems that will make you a tiny bit nervous for your gecko's health, it's a brilliant book that makes you feel like a friend of the author and a good gecko owner!!!

              3 out of 5 stars Handeling.......2005-02-20

The information is great minus one the, the handleing section. When i got my leopard gecko, i never read any books. I went to the pet store and talked to them. Everytime i was there i held my Emeril (thats my geckos name). OK, so yes they have sensitive tails and sharp nails, but they dont get caught in fabric that easily. I have had mine for 3 years and have held him and let him walk all over me and my bed and teh counter. and he is fine. still with his tail, and all his fingers. So please, hold your gecko and ignore tht section!

              5 out of 5 stars Very Helpfull!!.......2001-05-26

I've just recently perchased a leopard gecko and bought this book with high expectations! And they were fullfiled! Great book

4 out of 5 stars Very informative for those who know little.......2000-11-11

I orignally purchased this book for my brother who is an avid leopard gecko fan and wanted to breed his geckos. I found it very informative from a beginners standpoint, but I thought there would be more on breeding and less on 'other types of geckos'. Either way, it was my bit of fun learning for the day!

5 out of 5 stars Good News for Geckos and Their Owners.......2000-03-28

I purchased this book and the first of my three leopard geckos 18 months ago. It has served me very well with clear practical guidelines for setting up a gecko-friendly environment, providing good day to day care, identifying and dealing with health problems, breeding. The book also provides interesting background information about geckos. It is well-written and nicely designed with many attractive color photographs. Ray Hunziker appears to have the well-being of both geckos and owners in mind: He tells you that geckos don't like to be handled and suggests you handle them as little as possible. He provides a wide range of choices for the environment and the care of geckos, accommodating owners' differing esthetics and budgets.

My copy of the book went to school with a grandchild and has not returned, so I am about to purchase a second copy. One of my female geckos is laying eggs, so I need my Hunziker.

This an exceptionally useful and attractive guide.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book on the Coinage of England!.......1998-07-25

Richard Lobel has put together a definitive work on the coins of the UK and England from 1066 to present. The information is at its most informative when establishing rarity or variety. There are many line drawings to help the reader establish the differences in many of the earlier hammered coinage of England. This is in addition to the wonderful pictures of coins that are throughout this reference.

I would whole heartedly recommend this book for the serious collector of the coins of England and the UK.

5 out of 5 stars The finest handbook of English coinage available today!!.......1998-01-01

The 1998 edition of the catalogue is vastly superior to previous editions of the work. The historical information, the pricing, the photographs, and the quality of the binding are all unsurpassed for reference works of this type. I am especially pleased with the line drawings that have been provided to help numismatists distinguish the various varieties of the Edwardian pennies. The collecting tips which are provided for each issue are also useful for those who have not spent a lifetime collecting the series. If you collect English coinage you MUST have this work on your shelf.

I am currently writing my childs LifeBook. Without this book for guidance I would be lost. I am lucky enough to have a few photo's of my son at various ages from 1 month to 18 months, including one of the birthmom and him at 5 months of age. This book is helping me tell his story without my emotions getting in the way. This is truely his book and very personal.

                        Book Description

You know the name -- you've heard of the people -- and now the doors to Elaine's, New York City's famed night spot, are finally open. And no one, not even Elaine herself, is standing guard at the door.

Elaine Kaufman's creation certainly came from humble beginnings. Forty years ago the now legendary restaurant on Eighty-eighth Street and Second Avenue was deemed too far uptown for anyone of importance to frequent. It was there that Elaine served, catered to, and nursed young starving writers and artists of the day.

As these customers grew and matured into Woody Allen and Norman Mailer, Andy Warhol and Jack Nicholson, Elaine's grew with them. By the time these artists were deemed legends, well, Elaine's had already become legendary.

                        A. E. Hotchner was there at the beginning, is still there today, and has a table reserved for tomorrow. There is no better person than "Hotch" to tell the story of Elaine's. He was there for every bit of it.

They're all inside: Jackie O., Truman Capote, Frank Sinatra, Liz Smith, Joan Rivers, Lauren Bacall, Judy and Liza. The stories are all here. The night Jackie came to dance. The night Sinatra snubbed The Godfather author, Mario Puzo. When Sinatra's ex-wife, Mia Farrow, asked Michael Caine to introduce her to Woody Allen. When George Steinbrenner was turned away at the door the night his Yankees beat the Mets in the Subway Series.

Everyone Comes to Elaine's is more than a story about New York City. It's more than a story of celebrities. This is the story of a "family" with a domineering mother who will stop at nothing to protect those dearest to her. This is an American saga.

Elaine's is a microcosm of the people and events of the last forty years, from the sixties, when Beatles and Stones held forth there, to the start of the twenty-first century, when painful wakes were held for the regulars who perished on September 11. Just as Gertrude Stein presided over her salon in Paris in the twenties, Elaine now presides over hers.

So pull up a seat. You're invited. Everyone comes to Elaine's. Enjoy!

I purchased this book while on vacation in Ireland. I had never read anything by him but the quick description on the back made me laugh so....thought I'd give it a try. I'm happy to report that the laughter did not stop there. This was a wonderful, entertaining book. I found myself smiling throughout and constantly reading passages aloud to friends. I can't wait to read more by him !

O'Connor is at his best here -- one of those few books that make you laugh out loud. He also hits the nail on the head with the Irish male psyche -- I understand my Belfast-bred husband so much better now.

                        5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Funny.......1998-12-17

I picked up a copy of this in Dublin to read on the long ferry/bus back to London. I bought it for the cover and title (he's upside down) and fell in love with the prose. Funny, hip, sarcastic, deep, shallow, and drunk... Joe does it all. Much better than his travels in America book, this one is continualy stolen by my friends... A wonderful wonderful book Reminds me of "Sex Tips for Girls" and "Good Omens" w/o the fiction angle.
