Book Description
Street’s Guides are the result of his forty-four years of Caribbean experience— his first guide to the Virgin Islands (1964) has been expanded over the years to cover the entire eastern Caribbean. These guides give the mariner all the information needed to safely cruise the area, not only piloting information but also interesting background information on people, places and history.
“In the beginning was the word and the word came from Street. Since 1964 all other guide authors have followed in Street’s and Iolaire’s wake, avoiding the rocks and shoals Street and Iolaire discovered.”
—Patience Wales, Editor, Sail

A true sailor's guide, not for the tourist.......2003-10-11
The shoreside details may be outdated, but the craft of cruising these islands is timelessly preserved. Not many people cruise today without an engine, and only without an engine can you develop the kind of insights Mr. Street shares. If you don't appreciate his opinionated views on the island communities, you can't deny that he is a master sailor. The countless ranges he has documented guide one safely through the islands without fear of one's GPS receiver having a bad day. His challenge to find an anchorage where you can lie with 6' foot draft that he has not documented is in the finest tradition of sailing bluster. I doubt anyone will find one that Mr. Street has not sailed into. Wherever you may go in the Windward Islands, picture doing it all without an engine, and you will begin to appreciate the craft documented in this book.
Somewhat informative, but disappointing.......2002-10-09
This book is well organized and written, but I was never sure how up-to-date the information was. The book was first written back in the 1960's and was last published in 2001. The author does not ease my concerns because in several places in the book he says this is the way it was in the early 1970's, or I went back in 1984 to update this information. It reminds me of listening to my father reminisce about the good old days-pleasent stories, but not always relevant to the way things are today. Also, there are few pictures contained in the book and none of them are in color. This adds to the feel that the book was written in the 1960's and it certainly does not create excitement or motivate anyone to go to the Windward Islands. In summary, the positives are: detailed information on navigation, sailing routes, areas with tricky currents, waves, etc. The negatives: limited and/or outdated information on navigation hazards, buoy locations, places to get provisions, restaurants, hotels, shops etc. This is a pricey book and I would expect it not to be outdated and dull. It appears that the book is slipping from a cruising guide to an autobiography by Mr. Street. I would skip this one.

St,Martin-Anguilla-St. Barths-Saba.......2000-04-04
Excellent It bailed us out when we ran out of light before getting into the anchorage at Philipsburg and got us into several beaches that were completely deserted.
A bit dated is spots (it is 7 years old) For example, Saba has installed a number of excellent mooring on the south and west sides on the island, making it much easier to get either by the traditional landing or LLadder Landing on the West side. There is a road down to that now (no more 1000 steps to climb). However it was out when we were there (4-1-00)
Don't sail or charter in the USVI & BVI without this book.......2000-02-28
We've sailed and chartered in the USVI and BVI numerous times and ALWAYS take this guide with us. From little known anchorages (Mermaids Chair on St. Thomas) to the most frequented (Great Harbor on Yost Van Dyke)this guide is without equal.
Incredible-Indispensible!.......1999-07-19
Although I have been sailing for 40 years, this was the most useful and informative sailing guide I have ever read. It adverted me from several unknown and possibly costly collisions...and I'm not referring to other boats. His harbor guides and navigational charts were indispensible! BUY BUY BUY!!!!
The Bible of Sailing in the Caribbean.......1999-07-19
This is one of the bests books on sailing ever. Mr. Street is obviously a very acomplished sailer. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who is planning to sail in the Caribbean

An extraordinary life through his letters and others .......2004-10-04
Jefferson was a giant, and this book chronicles his extraordinary life through his letters and the letters of others, lovingly assembled and edited by his great-granddaughter. At various points, it is moving and tearful; elsewhere it is joyous and humorous. At all times, Jefferson's seemingly-unlimited talents and brilliance, as well as his qualities as a decent human being and his erudition, shine forth.
The greats of American history come alive through their correspondence and Jefferson's letters to others: Washington, Franklin, Adams, Madison, Monroe, Henry and Hamilton, to name just a few. Also, Lafayette and Bonaparte of France. We witness firsthand the American Revolution, this nation's founding, Jefferson's years in Paris, the French Revolution, and his presidency.
However, perhaps three things stand out most of all: the depth of his love for his family and the meticulous care with which he nurtured each family member; his love for Monticello and his desire to return there and be rid of the burdens of public office; and his relationship with John Adams that, once breached, is finally restored at the end of their lives.
Remarkably, both presidents died on the 4th of July, 1826. To paraphrase the words of Jefferson, two "Argonauts" sailed on, leaving this country forever changed and better because they had passed here. "I steer my bark with Hope in the head, leaving Fear astern," Jefferson wrote to Adams in 1816. From being Secretary of State and Vice President to two terms in the presidency, involving the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Jefferson never lost his love for or his belief in this great country.
He was a farmer; he was a scholar; he was a scientist; he was a diplomat; he was a leader and a politician; he was an accomplished horseman who was faithful to his belief in the need for at least two hours of exercise each day; he was a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; and he loved music, birds and his gardens in Albemarle County, Virginia. And he was an American.
A picture of Jefferson through his letters.......2000-12-01
This biography was written by Jefferson's grandaughter to show "the beauties and charms of his domestic character." It is primarily through using his letters, which include over the years, those to his daughters, grandchildren, his sons-in-law, Layfayette, John Adams, Madison, lady friends in France, and others. The circumstances under which these were written are described.
Interesting to me were new insights into why Jefferson continued to serve in politics when he found it repugnant, his observations about the the French Revolution and Napolean, and his great affection and fatherly advice on health, education, and character building found in the letters to his daughters, and some grandchildren. In one instance, he discusses raising chickens. He also describes the pain of losing his wife and child, and a grandchild, to Abigail Adams.
Puts a little more flesh on the events, and on a giant of the 19th century. Good book to read in spirts.

Book Description
"It was Rebecca's son, Thomas, who first realized the victim's identity. His eyes were drawn to the victim's head, and aided by the flickering light of a candle, he 'clapt his hands and cryed out, Oh Lord, it is my mother.' James Moills, a servant of Cornell . . . described Rebecca 'lying on the floore, with fire about Her, from her Lower parts neare to the Armepits.' He recognized her only 'by her shoes.'"-from Killed Strangely
On a winter's evening in 1673, tragedy descended on the respectable Rhode Island household of Thomas Cornell. His 73-year-old mother, Rebecca, was found close to her bedroom's large fireplace, dead and badly burned. The legal owner of the Cornells' hundred acres along Narragansett Bay, Rebecca shared her home with Thomas and his family, a servant, and a lodger. A coroner's panel initially declared her death "an Unhappie Accident," but before summer arrived, a dark web of events-rumors of domestic abuse, allusions to witchcraft, even the testimony of Rebecca's ghost through her brother-resulted in Thomas's trial for matricide. Such were the ambiguities of the case that others would be tried for the murder as well.
Rebecca is a direct ancestor of Cornell University's founder, Ezra Cornell. Elaine Forman Crane tells the compelling story of Rebecca's death and its aftermath, vividly depicting the world in which she lived. That world included a legal system where jurors were expected to be familiar with the defendant and case before the trial even began. Rebecca's strange death was an event of cataclysmic proportions, affecting not only her own community, but neighboring towns as well.
The documents from Thomas's trial provide a rare glimpse into seventeenth- century life. Crane writes, "Instead of the harmony and respect that sermon literature, laws, and a hierarchical/patriarchal society attempted to impose, evidence illustrates filial insolence, generational conflict, disrespect toward the elderly, power plays between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, [and] adult dependence on (and resentment of) aging parents who clung to purse strings." Yet even at a distance of more than three hundred years, Rebecca Cornell's story is poignantly familiar. Her complaints of domestic abuse, Crane says, went largely unheeded by friends and neighbors until, at last, their complacency was shattered by her terrible death.

A forgotten murder mystery brought to light after 300 years.......2006-11-11
Killed Strangely: The Death of Rebecca Cornell is a fascinating true murder mystery by a Fordham University professor of history, chock full of early American criminal legends that from a less qualified source one might chalk up as fiction. In a single volume, she touches on two of New England's most infamous murder cases, and a third, the title case, which was strangely forgotten.
At center stage in this gem of a book by Elaine Forman Crane is "one of New England's darker moments,"the death of the elderly Sarah Cornell in colonial Rhode Island in 1673. Weeks later, Thomas Cornell, her middle-aged son, was accused of her murder. But was she murdered at all? Sarah Cornell was an English settler and once was a follower and next-door neighbor of Anne Hutchinson when Hutchinson and family were massacred by Natives. How small was the colonial world. Mrs. Cornell escaped the slaughter - only to be cut down by her son years later. Or such was the verdict.
Was old Sarah stabbed in her room, her body set on fire? Or did she die accidentally? One hopes it was indeed a case of murder since Thomas was hanged for it. The author lays out the evidence point by point and wrestles with the vagueness in the records, searching for answers, the final one elusive, but the exercise an enjoyable one. She did manage to unearth many fascinating depositions and transcripts from the case still in existence today, 340 years later, and they reveal the most intimate abuses and private aggressions in the Cornell family (which, much later, through more illustrious offspring, would found Cornell University). Thomas Cornell treated his mother very poorly, and the people who knew him very well, his friends and neighbors who judged him, determined that he killed her. How much weight should the guilty verdict be afforded? Who's to say?
The legal process used to bring Thomas Cornell to the gallows was fascinating unto itself. The colonial court allowed a witness to testify that the dead woman's ghost visited him in a dream and made some vague allusion to her questioned death. Hearsay -- from a ghost. There is also a description of the "ordeal by touch," a quasi-legal procedure by which the accused was compelled to be in the presence of the deceased, and in a case of murder, bleeding from the corpse would give it away. And yet, despite these curious features of the law, Cornell was permitted an attorney and was not compelled to confess or testify against himself.
Until this book came out, the story "languished in the shadows of historical obscurity," the author says. Amazingly, there was never a broadside, ballad, pamphlet, sermon, or other written record of the case beyond the legal papers. "The literary stillness," Crane says, "is all the more surprising since New Englanders enjoyed a good execution sermon or thrilling murder story."
This book is what Id call popular criminology, a la the recent Science of Sherlock Holmes, though the academics would call it "microhistory". Either way you slice it, it deserves to belong to any respectable collection of historic true crime, and it also commands a spot on the shelf of the complete Lizzie Borden library.
How's that? Lizzie Borden? It seems Thomas Cornell was the great, great, great, great, great grandfather of murderess Lizzie Andrew Borden, who was acquitted of patricide in 1893, 220 years after her ancestor was hanged for matricide. Lizzie Borden directly descended from Thomas Cornell's posthumous daughter "Innocent."
And there's more. Many well read true crime buffs will also recognize the infamous case of a young pregnant girl from Fall River, Mass. named Sarah Cornell who was found hanged from a haystack - the victim of Reverend Ephraim Avery (though he was acquitted in her death, and it was probably suicide). The author briefly explores that branch of the family tree as well.
But what I found most interesting about Killed Strangely was the author's brief foray into an uncommon crime. "Matricide was and is extremely rare," the author remarks. "No other fully documented cases have been uncovered in colonial America, and even today the infrequency of the crime hinders sustained research into the motivations for such violence." Some 20th-century studies of matricidal adolescents are mined for fascinating potential implications for the Cornell murder case. Needless to say, I found much to like about this book.
Unfortunately, not all academics, and not all general readers, like criminology, even when it's called "microhistory." The review of the book in Publishers Weekly was downright mean, calling the passages about Lizzie Borden, Sarah Cornell, matricide, etc. "bizarre aside." It goes on: "Without clear answers to whodunit or why, [the author's] proven scholarly track record could have been put to better use."
Well! A book is no good without clear answers to whodunit? Whatever you do, dont repeat that to the Ripperologists. I frankly like some of my mysteries to be mysterious. It's the mystery that abides: Jack the Ripper, Lizzie Borden, the Lindbergh baby... this long-ago matricide in colonial New England, brought to light for the first time in these pages. We may never know, and we rather like them that way, thank you.
Why was this book written?.......2005-02-26
At the end of the book, the author wonders why there was not more in history written about this important event. However, she fails to convince me that this was an important event. If she had intended this book to be about trends in history, it might have lived up to its purpose. However, as a story of the death of Rebecca Cornnell, it fails to accomplish little. I learned nothing new from reading this book, and in fact found it irritating at times when the author guessed at what might have happened, with very little basis to back up her guesses. She also did little to convince me of the relevance of the connection with possible future generations that she tacked on at the end.
Wrtitten Strangely.......2004-03-07
This book dares to be called an historical work. It should be deemed a fantasy. Rarely does the author clearly articulate reasons for her sweeping and farcical assumptions. When she describes Lizzie Borden as proof positive that the Cornells were genetically disposed to get angry enough to kill, she clearly crosses the line. Ms. Crane thanks her husband for his help by stating that he was her partner in crime. It's truly a crime that this book was ever published.
CSI in Colonial Rhode Island.......2003-01-06
Professor Crane combines scholarly insights with an easy, narrative style and wit to make "Killed Strangely" a wonderful bridge between the academic world and that of the casual reader of historical novels. In this she joins the likes of David McCullough and Joanne Freeman to prove that history can be serious without having to be dull.
Like a good crime scene investigator, Professor Crane unravels the details surrounding the death in February, 1673 of the elderly Rebecca Cornell, very possibly (but not necessarily)at the hands of her son, Thomas. But more than investigate the elements of a crime, she uses the skelton of Cornell's death and of Thomas' indictment and trial to create an understanding of the psychology and legal processes as well as the social and familial relationships of New England's Puritans and Quakers. We especially learn a lot about women, particulary elderly women, in the seventeenth century.
At least part of an historian's role is to link the threads of history pointing out to us similarities and differences between eras. Crane traces one of those threads through the Cornell family into the nineteenth century. That raises all kinds of questions that extend beyond the scope of history into the realms of psychology, sociology and even genetics. Crane, thereby, points a flashlight into dark corners where we sometimes do not want to look. In this, she is reminiscent of "All God's Children," the account of New York's juvenile killer, Willie Bosket, and his ancestry by Fox Butterfield.
Because we are of an era that believes in guilt "beyond a shadow of a doubt," we can be left unsatisfied by Thomas' conviction and execution as were, in fact, many of his contemporaries unfortunately for, his sake, posthumously. Crane addresses this in the chapter "Doubting Thomas: Or Considering the Alternatives." Unlike a tv show, history frequently cannot be neatly wrapped up in an hour and the plot sometimes does not end satisfactorily.
But "Killed Strangely" is an easily recomended work whether you are a fan of the History Channel or Court TV --- or simply of Law and Order and CSI.
"Killed Strangely," a Fascinating Tale.......2002-11-29
"Killed Strangely" is a thoroughly engrossing tale of the extraordinary crime of matricide in 17th century New England. Crane's skills as an historian give the reader a vivid sense of the texture of everyday life in the Rhode Island colony as well as the legal standards and practices that determined the community's judgment. Although this is a work of non-fiction, the reader becomes involved with the characters' lives and the uncertainties surrounding the event in much the same way one does with a good novel. Highly recommended for anyone curious about the ways in which the country's past and present interconnect.
Book Description
The Bearded Dragon, also known as the Lizard of Oz, is an enormously popular pet from down under. It is estimated that in 1998, 100,000 Bearded Dragons will be purchased by reptile enthusiasts in the United States. A docile animal, Beardeds are relatively easy to keep in captivity–but they do need special care–all of which will be included in this excellent source for the beginning Bearded Dragon fan.

Another great delivery .......2007-10-01
Again as usual Amazon has come through for me ... the book a learning device for my son came in the knick of time ... his bearded dragon seems to like it too... not sure if thats a good thing but ty Amazon as always a wonderful delivery and very efficiently done ...
Informative and very helpful for a first-time owner!.......2007-01-10
I found this review to be very helpful. It breaks down different areas, such as feeding, breeding, health, etc in a detailed manner. Very reassuring for a nervous, first-time owner who loves their bearded dragon!
bearded dragons.......2003-12-23
I love bearded dragons and have been doing research on them for a long time. Many of my friends and family have beardies and i hope to get one soon.My friend has this book and it provides alot of useful informacion.
Improper Information.......2002-09-04
I hate to be the only one who has a problem with this book, but I can't keep my mouth shut. This book was poorly written at best, containing information that was erroneous and possibly detrimental to the health of pet beardies. The author relied on what I basically refer to as "guesswork" rather than actual documented bearded dragon information. Just enough information to be ignorant is a dangerous thing. If you value your pet beardie, don't invest in this book. If you are interested in a book with a lot of good (correct) information, I would recommend: "The Bearded Dragon Manual" by Phillippe De Vosjoli/Robert Mailloux/et al. It is by far the most comprehensive guide to the care of bearded dragons at all stages of growth and development.
A Great book!.......2001-04-13
I recently bought a Bearded Dragon and bought several books about this lizard. I have to say that this book is one of the best. It is written in a very personal way (unlike many other "take care of your pet books" and I really like that. It is also very informative and has a lot of great images. The book tells you everything you have to know if you are a Bearded Dragon owner or wants to buy one - how to choose a Bearded Dragon, the terrarium, terrarium set up, breeding, the right food etc. I especially found the "food part" informative and with a lot of nice pictures. I highly recommend this book! My BD appreciated it! :-)

Great Projects!.......2007-10-12
This book has some of the best, and well-written projects of any book I've ever picked up. No stuffy, dusty, 'remind you of your granny' afghan and doily patterns here! All fun, hip, and easy projects to get your creative crochet going. I've completed six projects from The Happy Hooker - the skull potholders, the pink bunny slippers, the garden scarf, the candy stripe scarf, the fit to be tied clutch purse and the fashion first aid handbag. I have an extensive list(pretty much rest of the entire book) of more projects to attempt! They're so much fun and so practical. Nothing in the Happy Hooker is a turn-off to crochet, which I think that some people have a bad impression of due to my previous descriptions - stuffy, granny squares and ugly brown and orange afghans. My grandma taught me to crochet, and it was unbelievably boring, but books like The Happy Hooker make it so much more fun to create with a hook!
Great addition to Stitch and Bitch collection!.......2007-10-09
Received this book as a birthday present recently (siggghhh...gifts make them easier to deal with, don't they?). In this case, I had Debbie Stoller's new one on my wish list since it first starting appearing on the Web, months before the actual release date.
Debbie (again) did not disappoint! This is a terrific book and I can't wait to get started making some of the projects. As I have mentioned before, crochet is my first love in the yarn craft genre, but there hasn't been as much attention given to crochet as there has been to knitting, since the current yarn frenzy began. This book provides a lot of variety- fun, easy projects, some more classic looks and in keeping with her knit books, Debbie again provides a comprehensive guide to the basics, how-to's re: stitches, yarns, sewing it all together and so much more. Even a short history of crochet is included.
Some of my already want- to- try projects from the book include: Unseamly Sweater, FrouFrou cardigan, Fluffy Bunny Slippers and One Skein Scarf, to name just four.
Thanks for another terrific book Debbie. PS: Love the cover photo!!!
i am now one happy hooker!.......2007-10-04
When I was younger I learned to crochet...
YEARS later I had forgotten how, after reading many reviews and going to MANY websites, I found this book, and boy am I glad I did!
Not only do you learn the basics but you also learn how to read patterns and there are several easy projects!
I would say this is a must have for any person looking to get into crochet!
too many errors in patterns.......2007-09-26
BE WARNED! there are too many mistakes in this book. if u dont believe me, look at the online "corrections and clarifications" page. my advice: dont begin ANY project in this book b4 looking at this corrections page. the ratio of patterns with mistakes to the mistake-free patterns is astonishing. i want to love the author and the book (nice style, great projects, pictures and instructions) but i've never used another book that contains this many errors. insult to injury: the corrections page is hard to read AND CONTAINS ERRORS!!!
Cute stuff-but not really for beginners.......2007-09-17
Some of these patterns are cute, but I often found similar items online for free. My biggest complaint as a newbie to crochet is that her patterns often describe a very particular yarn, presumably one that needs to be ordered from a specialty store. If you are a beginner, you should start off with materials you can find cheaply at your local craft store. It would be helpful if they'd suggest alternative yarns for practice.
Aside from this, the intros and instructions in the beginning chapters were helpful, and did a lot to show how and why you do certain things.

Adding honor as a factor in raising kids …and parent-child relationships.
Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller offer a thorough program for establishing honor as a basis of family life — not just children honoring parents, but parents respecting children and children honoring each other. Even if honor seems a long way off in your household, you will find practical suggestions here to bring that goal a little closer — suggestions for kids of all ages. Honor is the biblical value that will bring about good behavior. It’s more than just changing what kids do; it’s changing the deeper issues of the heart that triggered the behavior.

A Must Read for Any Parent.......2007-05-15
A breakthrough for familial relating, this book points to the heart directing our actions. What motivates us when interacting with one another? It should be honor: a desire to treat someone as special, to go above and beyond, all with a good attitude. Applying the principles in this book will dramatically affect any family and work to eliminate the bad attitudes in all of us.
great suggestions and direction with christian insight.......2006-03-14
many idenifying stories and great, helpful suggestions. Really helped me with my two daughters 10 -12 years old. Honor, a lost concept in our world today. But a key concept to self esteem and esteeming others properly.
GREAT parenting book!.......2005-08-24
I heard about this book through my church Sunday School class. It is GREAT! Offers wonderful and practical advice on how to parent to the "heart" of the child. Teaches parents the difference between a child "respecting" his parents and a child "honoring" her parents. I've read MANY parenting books but this one really opened my eyes up. Am I disciplining just to get the right response and just to "look" like a good parent? Or am I truly teaching my children the right behavior through the right attitude? Most helpful book. You won't be disappointed! PS - Our church also used teaching video made to accompany book (sold seperately)..it was *okay*...the book is MUCH more useful.)
Wow! An actual answer to many of my parenting questions!.......2004-02-03
The authors conducted a parenting seminar at my church a couple of years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt like I got a lot out of their presentation, but decided not to buy their book since I'd taken detailed notes. After several weeks, I found myself asking questions about some of the practical applications of their "honor-based" method of parenting. Eventually, I stopped doing it and went back to my previous free-form ideas and style. One day my two older children had been picking on each other mercilessly and whining beyond belief. I decided to buy a copy of Turansky and Miller's book to see if it would make a difference having the book itself handy for reference and taking notes. Much to my surprise, after reading the book and taking notes about the practicals details of teaching my children about "showing honor" to other family members, I noticed a difference in our family dynamics the first day! It's been quite awhile now that we've been implementing these ideas, and this weekend I had a group of middle school youth at church comment to me about how my children actually like their siblings and treat each other with kindness and respect. Evidently the kids who were talking to me thought this was really, REALLY unusual ... brothers and sisters who actually like each other? Who make an effort to be nice and speak kindly to each other (and about each other)? Wow ... what a concept. It was so encouraging to realize that the fruit of "honor" in our family was evident to others, too. I highly recommend this book!
Great Practical book.......2002-11-26
I found that many books can tell you what you should be doing but unless they have practical advice on how to do it then it doesn't help. This book does. It also was very helpful to have actual examples in each chapter.
Product Description
Eight audio cassettes in clamshell case. Teaches you the key to help change kids hearts--not just their behavior. The key is not in controlling children, but rather instilling honor in them.

the kitschmeister dishes.......2006-10-14
if you have heard of Schnabel, the illustrations in this book will persuade you that it's best not to see his work. If you would like to read the autobiography of a mediocre painter and consummate poser, this book might be for you.
the best Schnabel art book.......2003-07-30
As a young painter I value art books as my teachers, a removed version of the artist the book covers. Schnabel's book enhances (and probably created) the mythic figure he would become (including his Achilean fall) and offers great images of the works of art he created up until the book's publication. The photos of the work are excellent. The commentary is honest (and heavily colored by Schnabel) and story-like (written with a short "burst" style like a Chuck Pahlaniuk novel). It is nearly embarrassing (which is good). Schnabel is an undervalued painter and mind. This book is an excellent entry point into his thoughts, biography, and work. There are few decent Schnabel books out there and this is by far the best.
Autobiography of a modern genius.......2001-10-11
Though he's better known now as a filmmaker, Julian Schnabel was also one of the leading figures on the American Art Scene in the late '70s and '80s where, for better or worse, his gigantic canvases and infamous arrogance typified the last years of Warhol's New York. You either love the Schnabel of that period or you hate him. Luckily for me, I thought he was a genius and therefore I enjoyed his autobiography, Cvj. Covering his childhood in Texas, Cvj doesn't carry all of the insider gossip that a lot of readers will probably be looking for but it is a rare and fascinating glimpse into the development of one of the greatest artists of modern times.
Amazon.com
Julian Schnabel burst on the neo-expressionist art scene of the early 1980s with huge, arresting paintings on collaged shards of smashed plates. A swaggering and contentious figure whose art no longer occupies center stage, he is probably best known today as a successful filmmaker. All the more reason, perhaps, for him to shore up his reputation by co-designing a mammoth book of his life and art. Julian Schnabel dispenses with commentary, except for the artist's own brief, broad-brushed introduction. Even the titles of his works are relegated to the illustrated index, which--despite Schnabel's proclivity for unconventional surfaces--omits any mention of media. Nearly 400 full-color reproductions trace Schnabel's output from 1976 to the present, interspersed with photographs of the artist, his family, and off-camera moments from the making of Before Night Falls, his film about the gay Cuban writer Reynaldo Arenas. Of course, all the famous Schnabel preoccupations are on full view, from the persistent references to Catholic ritual to the phallic imagery and the invocations of his wife Olantz. The newest mega-series, "Big Girl Paintings"--each face featuring a horizontal swipe of paint in lieu of eyes-seems a hollow echo of the lively portraits of friends and family from the 1980s and 1990s. But die-hard Schnabel devotees will adore this lavish volume, which accompanies an international traveling exhibition that opens in January 2004 at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, Germany. Book Description
Julian Schnabel (b. 1951) is regarded throughout the world as one of the most important artists of our time. Yet, remarkably, there has never been-until now-a book that addresses the extraordinary range of his entire creative output. This lavishly produced volume presents many artworks that have never before been exhibited, published, or even seen, filling a major gap in the history of contemporary art.
More than 300 of Schnabel's works-paintings, photographs, sculptures, and film stills spanning a career of nearly 40 years-are reproduced here, along with texts drawn from the artist's interviews, essays, and notes. From the broken-plate paintings of the 1980s that brought him fame, to the recent, massively scaled Big Girls series, the artist's work is set in the context of his overall sensibility, becoming part of an ongoing pictorial diary of a life. Rather than a retrospective look at Schnabel's work, the book provides readers with a view of life and art as they collide. Julian Schnabel is certain to be welcomed as one of the season's most significant art publications.
Customer Reviews:
Don't buy this book (Sorry, Schnabel book people).......2007-10-03
So, I'm a professional art handler, artist, and closet art historian who has come into contact with my fair share of Schnabels. All I can say is his work can tend to be filed in the "total crap" column. Most of his stuff obviously took a hilariously small amount of effort on his part, considering he probably hasn't stretched his own canvases in twenty years. And squeezing some canvas pliers and grunting once every 6 months doesn't count.
I don't own this book, but I have perused its contents at one of Schnabel's galleries. Pretty much, if your work doesn't look better when put in the context of the "fancy-pants coffee table art book", then you're pretty much lost as an artist. And that's where I place Schnabel. His checkerboard and neon pink and green streaked 80's boat sailed long ago.
But, alas, he doesn't have to sulk in his studio while watching reruns of "Head of the Class". Instead, he's surrounded himself with an army of knowledgeless, subservient gallery owners who, in a desperate attempt to proclaim Julian Schnabel the Messiah of modern sensibilities, would go as far as to have him curate a show of even crappier work done by his brother-in-law. (No, seriously. Look it up.)
So he gets a hundred g's a painting, and we get to lower our standards.
Must have Modern Art book.......2005-10-16
This book is awesome. For fans of artists who work LARGE and loose. If you have noticed the reactions to this book are very polarized, people seem to either love or hate it. I love it and feel the haters just don't get modern art. There are so many colorplates you just keep turning pages impressed with the wide range and amount of work this artist has done.
The archetypal 80s artist: dull, mediocre, pretentious.......2005-07-25
While Schnabel's latter day ressurection as a cinéaste (Basquiat, Antes que Anochezca) has proved he has a modicum of intelligence, his 'art' was just so much product for 80s New Yorkers - it has not a whit of imagination, irony, vision, truth, beauty - anhything, in fact, that might cause it to linger in the mind. Whatever their flaws (and they are legion) Koons and Serrano are Titans compared to this dross
the prince of kitsch.......2005-06-21
if you have heard of Schnabel, the illustrations in this book will persuade you that it's best not to see his work.
Poor art by a poor artist.......2004-05-09
The reason there exists no body of critical literature on Julian Schnabel is simply because his art is so blatantly uncompelling, mediocre, and self-seeking, that no one has bothered in the past three decades to waste time writing about it. Nor will you find any illuminating text here, either (one imagines there is really nothing much to say about paintings this bad anyway) -- just a few Rolling Stone-esque photos of the artist to prove his hipness . . . Painting is still cool, right?

Book Description
Observers of contemporary art associate the name Julian Schnabel with highly evocative, large-scale paintings. At the time of his early exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe in the 80s, the larger-than-life Schnabel was loudly hailed as a new milestone in the development of painting, the savior of an art form declared dead years before. Still painting some of the most massive canvases around, Schnabel is a virtually unrivalled master in the use of "bigness" and a broad range of materials. Fragmentation and overlapping play an important role in his art, in terms of both material and content. If his paintings don't exhibit a consistent style, why should they? Instead, they combine oil painting and collage techniques, classical pictorial elements inspired by historical art, Neo-Expressionist features, as well as figuration and abstraction, gesture and structure. This volume presents a broad selection of Schnabel's paintings in a survey of his diverse oeuvre, with emphasis placed on works from 1990 to the present.

THE kITSCHMEISTER REVEALED.......2005-12-28
Schnabel's career proves that one can indeed fool some of the people all the time. The reproductions of his paintings will show you how many collectors with more money than taste bungled in their esteem for this hack.
another book about the kitschmeister.......2005-06-19

Different, but a must have!.......2000-01-23
The Art of being you came out just after the death of the talented Gianni Versace. I own all of his books which I highly recommend. Different in this installment are the images of modern art which Versace so incorporated into his work. Evident is the work of Julien Schnabel (broken plate painter) and Andy Warhol. The presence of photographer Richard Avedon's work makes the 100$Canadian worth it. If your into fashion especially Versace, check out Vanitas for Gianni's renderings. Nobody does it like Versace. Lets hope his sister continues the same tradition.
The best.......1999-10-24
This book shows the private art collection that the versace family have collected. Great book with great pictures.
Any coffee table w/o this should be green with envy!.......1999-10-24
In the world of Art books, This has got to be the best posthumous release ever. Abbeville Press has outdone themselves with this masterpiece. I own Mr. Versace's previous 5 books, Signatures, Vanitas, Do not disturb, Rock and Royalty and Men w/o ties which I highly recommend. In this edition, Versace shows us that until his untimely death, the wheels never stopped turning. With the help of Thierry Perez, Steven Meisel, Julian Schnabel and other fabulous artists, This book truly defines the artifice and uncompromising couturier called Gianni Versace.

Airey Neave.......2005-08-24
I became interested in Airey Neave through his books on World War II POW escapes. Neave escaped from Colditz which he wrote about in "They Have Their Exits". He was then recruited by the secret services to manage escape organizations / routes in occupied territories, which is in his book "Saturday at M.I.9". After the war Neave coordinated part of the Nuremburg Nazi war criminal trials (his book "Nuremburg").
Paul Routledge has written an interesting biography of Airey Neave, from his early life in college, WWII experiences, and then his political life. Neave was key in the rise to power of Margaret Thatcher. As a reward he took over the post of managing the Irish troubles. Neave favored putting down the IRA ruthlessly, and was assassinated in a car bombing before he could try it.
