Interesting and Informative.......2003-02-07

Dr. Bruce Chadwick's brief and exciting narrative of the history of the Underground Railroad is superbly written. Adventurous and refreshing from the beginning, this work can be enjoyed by both academians and laymen. Chadwick provides suspenseful tales of escape from slavery, including accounts such as the well-known escape of Henry "Box" Brown as well as lesser known treasures that I won't spoil by summarizing here.

Not meant to be an extensive historical account of Underground Railroad history or Civil War daily life, this book does provide descriptions, photos and historical details pertaining to more than 300 sites currently listed as part of the Underground Railroad, and an introduction to the Underground Railroad that is the sine qua non of the book. Chadwick also provides histories of some sites that were destroyed before they could be legitimately proven as an historical part of the Underground Railroad.

As for the previous Amazon[.com] reviewer's distaste for this work, I'm wondering what personal animosity existed between the reviewer and Dr. Chadwick. The accusations of historical inaccuracy and false acknowledgements are hardly believable. As for descriptions of certain sites the reviewer claims "vague," that would be the point of visiting the Underground Railroad sites for one's self.

Lost on the Underground Railroad.......2001-03-02

I would really like to give the book 0 Stars or a -5. Thank goodness Dr. Chadwick was not alive and a conductor during the 1800's because based on his descriptions just in Ohio I would have be lost, caught and sold back to slavery. I know a couple of his acknowledgements and know for a fact he did not spend much time talking to them or getting their input before his final draft. There are so many sites all over the United States and Canada that I am sure Vince DeForest could have pointed out, yet he spend an amazing amount of time dwelling in Ohio. At first I was flattered until I started reading the descriptions. If he went on a tour at the Kelton House, he must have slept his way through it. There is a lot more to say about the Stone Academy in Zanesville! What about its significance in the history of the Underground Railroad? Isn't that what the book is about? The only thing about Benjamin Lundy that stuck in his mind was his "bragging about traveling more than 25,000 miles ..". A Quaker bragging, when did this interview take place? What about the Free Labor Store still standing? I could go on but I will leave a few comments for others.

I think you get the jest. In historical accuracy he gets a F, in vague research he gets a A+.

Laugh along with Bruce at the puzzling world of humans.......2004-10-27

If you're 5 or 85 and like me love dogs you should enjoy this book which gives one dog's view of the world of humans - sometimes puzzling, sometimes NOT dog-friendly, but nearly always humorous. (HOW can you BOOT a computer with slippers on?) The language used means that it should be accessible to children as well as adults (my grandchildren loved it) and the humour seems to work for both young and old. A real 'feel-good' read & very funny.

It would be helpful if can get information/ view the sample pages on the item description, such as the table of contents, etc. That way we will be able to see if the book has what we're looking for, sort of like in a virtual library; because sometimes you buy a book because it has something specific in the book that you've been looking for.

Very good beginners book.......2007-09-26

This book is very easy to understand and follow. For those not familiar with Chinese acupuncture points it gives you easy to understand information. You can check on the back pages for points you feel sore and it will direct you to the information on the use of that point and is Chinese name.

In a short time the reader can have a basic understanding of how to treat minor aches and pains without the need of pills.

For those more advance you will find that for each meridian the book does not show all the point just a few, which in some cases is important since you can not pinpoint what exactly hurts and to what is related.

But overall is a good book to have at home

Life Is Beautiful the movie concerns the triumph of the human spirit over the horrors and attracities committed against the european jews during the holocaust. It shows the extraordinary lengths that people will go to protect the ones they love. Although the film is set during the holocaust, the film is about compassion and love and desperate forcade one man must invent to firstly protect his son and secondly spare his mental anguish. As a result of having watched this film, I have realised that life is precious and life can be a living hell. Somehow though, life is still beautiful.

pathos and humor = LIFE.......2003-05-03

Guido, the central character in Life is Beautiful, is one of the most poignant characters in literature. He chooses to create an illusionary world for his son so that Giosue will survive the horrific conditions in a concentration camp. It becomes clear to the reader that Guido makes a decision as soon as he and Giouse are taken to the camp that he will, if necessary, go so far as to sacrifice his own life for his son's strength and survival. The theme of unconditional love transcending pain, horror, and incomprehensible ignorance is the ultimate message of the book. And, if anything, the reader empathizes even more with victims of the Holocaust because of Guido's presentation of his experiences. There is no "making fun" of the Holocaust in this book; there is only a celebration of love and the beauty of life. Everyone should read it and watch the movie!

One has to admit, Miramax makes a lot of darn good movies, from SLING BLADE to GOOD WILL HUNTING. LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL is another great movie. In fact, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL is one of the best movies of 1998. However, this is not the movie. This is only the screenplay. Sure you have all the lines that are in the film and a few pictures, but that's it. Frankly, if you haven't seen the film, I wouldn't recommend you reading or buying this: the words on a printed page are nothing like the movie. However, if you've seen the film you're probably a fan and it might be worth your while.

Shallow beyond belief.......2001-01-23

This is an insult to the intelligence of anyone that has any knowledge of the history of WW2 and the events of the Holocaust. I guess the allied forces should have invaded Normandy with a bunch of pies, rubber noses and floppy shoes. Sometimes clowns simply don't have a role to play and this is one of those situations. Benigni bringing up the name of Primo Levi was an insult to all of Levi's philosophical attempts to explain what happened to him and Europe's Jews.

there's more to benigni than life is beautiful.......2005-03-12

Being a great fan of the film, Life is Beautiful, I bought this book as soon as I saw it advertised. From the first time that I viewed the film I was curious about Benigni in general and his other films in particular. I've also seen and enjoyed Johnny Stecchino and The Monster, and there are essays on these films too. This book has really helped me to understand the scope of his work and above all, it has helped me to put Life is Beautiful in the context of cinema in general and Holocaust films in particular. In addition, I now understand why Life...has caused so much debate and controversy, and maybe I'm reconsidering my originally very positive opinion of the film. Maybe I had missed some points that I now see more clearly. I enjoyed almost all the essays, although there are 1 or 2 that maybe went a little overboard on the footnotes and references (I'm thinking particularly of the Kirkham essay). All in all I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to really understand Benigni's films and especially Life is Beautiful.

A Rick Stein Fan.......2007-05-12

Very very disapointing, as the book does not follow any of the recipes that were shown on his television series of the same name. I purchased this book for the specific reason of being able to make some of the recipes, especially the bread pudding recipe. I found myself being very angry at being duped into the purchase, not a fair thing to do. I live abroad and had no way of knowing what was inside the book, than other it would be the recipes of the series he was doing "On Food Heroes in Britain.
