Book Description
Highest, lowest, largest, oldest: Southern California is a land of superlatives, from the alpine summit of Mount Whitney (14,495 feet above sea level) in the Sierra Nevada range, to the salty pool at Badwater (282 feet below sea level) in the depths of Death Valley; from groves of giant sequoia trees standing more than 250 feet tall, to desert plants more than four thousand years old. To help you explore these sites and dozens more, "Backroads of Southern California"—written and photographed by a local expert and tour guide—features spectacularly varied and vibrantly seductive backroads and showcases the compelling scenery and colorful history in the lower half of the Golden State. Whether you’re planning a day trip, looking for unusual destinations, or simply want to learn more about the region, "Backroads of Southern California" will lead you deep into the soul of the southern part of the state—beyond the bustling cities and common tourist attractions. About the Author/Photographer: Dave Wyman is a professional photographer and freelance writer based in Los Angeles. The author/photographer of Voyageur Press’s "Backroads of Northern California," he has published articles and photographs in such publications as "Backpacker," "Outdoor Photographer," "Outside," and "Sierra." Wyman also owns and operates Image Quest, a natural history and photography tour company.
Customer Reviews:
Kinda Boring.......2006-12-29
This book is not what I expected. It is more of a history lesson than an adventure guide.
A pleasant picture-book.......2006-07-14
I originally thought this book would serve as a helpful travel guide for adventures on unknown So Cal roads...but it's really more of a nice coffee-table photo book with a bit of history wrapped around the shots. Great photos, though.
Discover Where Only the Native Californians Know to Go.......2006-02-26
I grew up on Southern California. My family was always more attracted to the twisting two lane roads that wound through the hillsides, mountains and deserts than to the bumper-to-bumper traffic on the freeways.
Most people who visit Southern California will figure out that they can visit Disneyland, Hollywood, the San Diego Zoo and the many great beaches. But few will make it to the Rim of the World in the San Bernardino mountains, Morro Bay, San Simeon, Carrizo Plain, Elk Hills, Sequoia National Monument, Mount Whitney or Death Valley. Visit any of these lesser known sights, and you may have a life-changing experience.
David Wyman has a good sense of the land and its people. I liked the way that he combined images of natural majesty with rusting junk left over from the 1950s. Both are integral parts of Southern California's back roads. The historical photos lend depth to the book that would otherwise be stuck in one time dimension . . . the last 50 years. The book's many maps will also make it easier for you to find the route you need to follow. The essays do a good job of giving you a flavor for what you'll see and experience. I have been everywhere described in this book and would consider it a pleasure to revisit any of them.
If you haven't been to any of these places, plan a long weekend and have a ball!
wyman shares his knowledge and photos.......2005-10-07
Dave Wyman knows California's backroads as well as Huell Howser! I've driven many of these roads, and am amazed at the research Dave has done to make their history, and their present, come alive in interesting, readable prose. His photography is colorful, easy to look at, and makes you want to be there. If you're headed to the backroads, or just want to travel by armchair, this book is for you!
A 'must' for any Southern California visitor who would explore the back roads.......2005-10-06
David M. Wyman is a professional photographer and freelance writer based in Los Angeles, and has published articles and photos about his local area in many places: his Backroads Of Southern California: Your Guide To Southern California's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures blends color photos with maps and insights into Southern California scenes not normally featured in competing, more mainstream travel guides. From the railroad legacy of the Tehachapi Mountains to a little-taken exit to the lovely, less urban See Canyon Road, this is a 'must' for any Southern California visitor who would explore the back roads.

Book Description
Back in print after more than a century, the book is a biography of the pioneer heroine of the Kanawha Valley, Ann Bailey. Her daring solo horseback ride (1791) to save her husband's fort was but one chapter in an extraordinary life. Many words can describe Bailey: Orphan. British expatriate. Widowed (twice). Entrepreneur. Letter carrier. Tale spinner. Grandmother. Pioneer. Equestrian. Heroine. From Staunton, Virginia, to what are now Lewisburg, Charleston, and Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio, Bailey roamed and made her larger-than-life presence known.

Pioneer Woman Ahead of Her Time.......2001-02-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this book... more from the aspect that this was written by an author who interviewed acquaintences of Ms. Bailey. As a parent I find it surprising just what her mother took her to witness at the age of five; I get shivers thinking about putting my children through that. And yet, times are very different socially, even from the time the book was written. (It was very amusing reading the author's perspective on the fact that Ann Bailey liked to knock one back once in a while.) I had searched and searched for information about Ann Bailey and was very happy to find this book. I was especially happy that the publisher actually packaged two books into one. A delightful book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read about strong-willed women, to anyone who likes to read antique books and smile at the social perspective of the author, and to anyone who is a fan of early pioneer history in the Ohio Valley.
An Accurate Historical Overview.......2000-10-10
I thourougly enjoyed this book. The content is certainly not compromised by its small size. I am a college student and a history minor and this book is very accurate. It begins with a short history of colonial women and then delves into Ann Bailey's life. Lewis keeps the book interesting by including personal accounts and interviews with people who knew Ann Bailey. He also includes poems that were written about her. There are even maps in the back of the book. This book was written over a hundred years ago and that could have made it drab or dry, but this book was lively and full of great detail. Lewis is fantastic about using lots of vivid imagery and beautiful language to keep the reader drawn in. I highly recommend this book for reports or for anyone who is interested in learning more about Ann Bailey, or what life was like for colonial women.

Start Revolution In Your Family...Tonite!
Every kid wants to have cool parents. This does not mean parents hip to the latest styles, nor parents with no rules whatsoever. What every kid really wants are parents who are able to keep their cool no matter what. Kids want parents who are far less anxious and far more levelheaded than they are. Your kids want you to remain unflappable, even when they flip out.
Turns out, that's exactly what they need.
Screamfree Parenting is the principle-based relationship approach that's inspiring parents everywhere to truly revolutionize their families. Throwing away many of the child-centered technique-based approaches, the ScreamFree way compels you to instead focus on yourself, grow yourself up and calm yourself down. By calming down and still remaining connected to your kids, you begin to operate less out of your deepest fears and more out of your highest principles, transforming your relationships in the process.

Scream Free Parenting - AWESOME!.......2007-10-16
I heard about this book from an interview of the author on Star 94. I tried to win a copy but since I couldn't, I decided to buy it. I went to the author's website where you can hear part of his book from him talking. I decided this book was for me. I was tired of yelling at my kids and them not listening. This book has changed me and has improved my parenting skills. I highly recommend this book for all new parents as well as any parent no matter how old your kids are.
I love the lesson about how the guy was tired of rushing his child all the time to be ready. He had to leave...so he left leaving his child to catch the bus. The child didn't catch the bus and therefore caught the consequences. Since the missed school, the other consequence was that he/she couldn't attend the functions that evening at school. It was harsh but it showed the child responsibilities and consquences. Just one of the many things discussed in the book
It's highly recommended!
Must read for all parents.......2007-10-11
I think all parents should read this book. It is amazing how many emotional reactions we have to normal things kids do. This book will help you react in a more productive way. It works!

Scream Free Parenting.......2007-10-10
This is one of the 3 best books I have every read and the #1 parenting book I have ever read. It has changed my approach to parenting and being a wife. This is a must read for any parent who feels either expresses frustration externally or even holds their frustration inside. This is a life changing book!
Book Description
Parents are facing the toughest challenge of their lives. They want to create a loving family environment filled with mutual respect and cooperation… but they find instead that human nature and the influence of our culture combine to produce an atmosphere of anxiety, exhaustion, and far too much screaming. Perhaps you can relate!
Whether you scream at your children or not, you no doubt feel anxious about them and their choices. You worry how they’ll turn out. Unfortunately for parents, many of the techniques some experts present only seem to make matters worse. Hal Edward Runkel has discovered why: Parents are spending far too much time orbiting their lives around their children. They need to return the focus to themselves. They need to grow up and calm down.
ScreamFree Parenting is about taming your reactive responses to your deep anxiety. Rather than learning new techniques, you’ll discover the liberating principles, based on scriptural truths, that are inspiring parents just like you to revolutionize their family life. Principles that will enable you to remain cool, calm, and connected with your children, no matter what.
Learn how to parent less out of your deepest fears and more out of the highest principles in ScreamFree Parenting.
Special edition distributed through Christian booksellers.
Customer Reviews:
The title says it all.......2007-09-18
Author Hal Runkel has hit upon an imaginative way to teach parenting: by stressing the need for parents to remain emotionally composed and self-controlled. If only all parents would see this light!
Hal Runkel is a marriage and family therapist with a particular interest in raising well-behaved children. Yet instead of focusing on how to achieve behavioral control of the kids, this book attempts to change the behavior of the adults in the household.
Every kid wants a "cool" parent, Runkel advises, yet the kind of "cool" that helps most is the kind that means calm, collected, and in control of his or her emotions.
Using witty chapter titles and insightful anecdotes (you'll enjoy the discussion about `judo parenting') Runkel essentially advises you as a parent to say what you mean-calmly-and mean what you say. He devotes a couple of chapters to the danger of threatening dire consequences without backing them up with actions, and the value of such consequences when they're actually imposed-by a calm parent.
What's new here is the packaging, not the theory, but Runkel's terms and descriptions are witty and fresh. Parents of young children or parents who feel like their children are `out of control' may especially enjoy this book.
NOTE: Together with wife Lisa, Dr. David Frisbie serves as executive director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California. They have authored numerous articles and eight books about family life, including "Raising Great Kids On Your Own," and "Happily Remarried."
Armchair Interviews says: Solid, mainstream parenting advice, presented with a fresh twist.
Screamfree parenting truly works!.......2007-09-09
Before I had children, I spoke in soft, lilting tones, rarely raising my voice above a lady-like whisper. The moment my children arrived on the scene, however, I witnessed how my vocal chords were suddenly in top form. It was alarming, really. Where did I gain my two-octave ability?
By yelling at my kids.
I swallowed hard. Yell? Scream? Pitch a fit? I'd done it like the best of them.
It is not comfortable to admit this to you, nor is it an unnatural tendency to want to be louder than they are. But, I realized I was not often modeling my best behavior. Nor was I truly getting what I wanted: self-directed children who are motivated by their own moral principles. I was getting deer-in-the-headlights glances and scurrying feet who did my will, but not for long.
Hal Edward Runkel, a family therapist from Atlanta, Georgia, provides a fabulous insight into how we can literally live screamfree. He doesn'T suggest we change our personalities. He does recommend morphing our anxious reactivity into more empowering means of communicating with our loved ones.
Hal's approach is so down-to-earth that you'll find yourself slapping your own head with a "Why didn't I think of that?" The book rests on three basic principles.
Parenting is about the parent, not the kids.
Calm down.
Grow up.
While these may seem oversimplistic, the premise is quite revolutionary. We've got Generation Y running about the office, expecting a large congratulations for actually showing up on time to work. Our kid-centric model of parenting has failed miserably. Humans raising other humans is challenging at best. If you don't care for your own reactions (the only ones you can control), how can you care for anyone else?
Another heartening suggestion - stop trying to control something you cannot. The only thing you can control is your reaction to things. Anxious reactivity informs a lot of our parenting. Give it up. Your children are not responsible for making you happy, but for finding their way in the world. They can't do that if they have to worry about you going ballistic, too.
Hal's hardest pill to swallow might be that we are the ones standing in the way of a powerful relationship with our kids. I'm guilty of it. You might be, too.
Halfway through the book, I decided to test out his theory. It's one thing to grin, nod and giggle from the comfort of your own post-kid-bedtime bed. It's an entirely other thing to actually put it to use.
I ordered a family-size vegetarian pizza for everyone. My daughter loves cheese pizza, but enjoys a dubious relationship to anything green. When it arrived, she wagged her tongue about like a canine happy to see his master. We opened the box, and her face fell like a soufflé at a children's birthday party.
"It's not cheese."
I suggested she pick off what she doesn't like, which she did, leaving her with a bare pizza. She cried, kicked the table and had a juicy tantrum, while I kept eating my pizza. I continued eating while she spewed out things such as "You're a terrible mother! You don't care if I starve!" and other thespian lines. I waited until she had finished, then quietly suggested we put parmasean cheese on it and place it back into the oven to melt.
Then a miracle happened.
She actually stopped crying.
"Okay," I heard her say. Containing my jaw in its socket, I did just that. She later scraped off the cheese, but ate the entire thing without complaint. My quiet, single octave voice created a calm she had not expected.
I tried it again with my son, who often vies to be heard by speaking louder and louder. I got quieter and quieter, asking him politely to tell me what he needed in a way I could hear him. He then agreed to brush his teeth on his own, discarding any struggle whatsoever.
My singing voice might suffer from this new screamfree practice, but my relationships certainly will not. Besides, who needs to replace the late Pavarotti? I'll leave that to the Italians to decide.
Christine Louise Hohlbaum, author of Diary of a Mother: Parenting Stories and Other Stuff and Sahm I Am: Tales of a Stay-at-Home Mom in Europe, lives in a screamfree house near Munich, Germany, with her husband and two children.

Book Description
Consider Africa--not with pre-established mindsets, unexamined assumptions, and bland generalizations--but for what Africa actually is: a setting in which marketers can gather new ideas and test old ones and perhaps emerge with a more varied, certain sense of what the marketing enterprise itself, is all about. Nwankwo, Aiyeku, and their contributing authors, all specialists with a remarkably wide range of experience and viewpoints, uncover the unexpected factors that they are certain will determine the success of selling just about any product or service to established or developing African nations. Original, eclectic, and agenda-setting, their book provides a startling insight into the dynamics of marketing in this fascinating region of the world as it continues to initiate the new macroeconomic and political reforms that are transforming the African continent into an important player on the international business scene. Nwankwo and Aiyeku see their book as a welcome attempt to identify and explore the institutional processes in which not only the study but also the practice of marketing is embedded. They work with three main themes: the processual issues, including theory development and the reconceptualization of conventional paradigms; the nature of the interrelationships that shape the dynamics of marketing overall; and the context-specific dimensions of marketing generally, its "marketing operations." As the volume editors state: "By and large, African nations present new contexts and new strategic challenges. As they become focused, certain general approaches as to how various characteristics influence marketing behaviors have to be established. This book, through addressing these contextual issues, provides a better focus for creating a relevant set of marketing activities in African situations."
Customer Reviews:
Understanding the economic development of Africa.......2003-02-19
In Dynamics of Marketing in African Nations, editors Sonny Nwankwo and Joseph F. Aiyeku and their contributing authors provide welcome insights into the dynamics of marketing in the African region of the world. As the nations of Africa continue to initiate new macroeconomic and political reforms, they are transforming the African continent into an important player on the international business scene.
In Chapter 2, "Marketing in Africa: An Electic Perspective," Franklyn A. Manu and Ven Skiram point out that sub-Saharan African countries have shown low levels of economic growth and development over the past three decades when compared to other regions of the world. In the new millenium it is important that these countries rethink their strategies for development if they are not to fall even further behind the other regions.
In Chapter 3, "Marketing in Africa and Marketing of Africa: The Challenge of Environmentalism and Sustainability," Maxwell A. Ayamba, Colin Beard, and Ian D. Rotherham emphasize that environmentalism and consumerism are powerful forces that are shaping marketing activities in African countries. The marketing of Africa must be more visionary in retaining more of the added value element of its natural resources. The huge possibilities of ecotourism and of wildlife tourism and leisure must be recognized.
In Chapter 8, "The Impact of the Internet, As a Marketing Medium, on Traditional Mass Media in South Africa," Debbie Vigar seeks to discover if marketers in South Africa regard the Internet to be a viable marketing tool. If so, she seeks to determine what impact the Internet is having on traditional mass media marketing in South Africa. She discovers that companies that have consistently had a presence on the Internet have significantly increased their market share and better served and understood their customers. She concludes that businesses that exploit the emerging technology of the Internet have a better chance of becoming a world-class player, optimizing their business performance, and attaining global competitiveness.
In Chapter 10, "Formal and Informal Retail Sectors in Africa: Evolutionary or Competing Paradigms?" Robert Rugimbana and Bill Merrilees review, through extensive literature, the informal and formal retail sectors in Africa, to demonstrate the dynamic evolution of the sectors over the past three to four decades. The authorities in African countries are advised to see this sector in a new light, one that positively recognizes its major contributions to the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of Africa.
In Chapter 11, "Marketing to Southern Africa: The Implications for a Financial Service Company," Isobel Doole, Robin Lowe and Liv Kirby examine the issues facing firms offering services when trying to establish a presence in African markets. Southern African countries are usually receptive toward foreigners and welcome them provided they adapt and do not inflict their Western views onto the local culture. Understanding and positively responding to buyer behavior and developing and motivating staff are likely to be key elements of an early stage market entry for a service business. Networking and word of mouth advertising are particularly important to success in a market such as financial services.
In Chapter 13, "The Impact of Culture on Marketing Management Functions Africa: The Relevance of Hofstede's Typology and Cross-Cultural Management Training," Abel Adekola raises the issue of how varying national cultures affect the application of management processes and functions. He proposes curriculums designed to cultivate productive characteristics in potential managers that can produce global employees successful in cross-cultural situations such as Africa.
In Chapter 14, "Improving Trade Flows Among African Nations: Lessons from the West African Sub-Region," Augustine M. Nwabuzor and Okechukwu D. Anyamele look at trade relations among selected African countries. Issues relating to intra-regional trade are explored with a view to identifying constraints and needed strategic adjustments. Remarkable economic progress is foreseen for developing nations in Africa that adopt relatively open economies, pursue trade-promoting policies, and invest in the development of their infrastructure, like paved roads and ports. There is an understanding that higher levels of intra-regional trade will accelerate the economic growth of the African regions. Jeffrey Sachs is praised for his 1998 proposal for opening the US market to goods from deserving African nations.
Graduate students of international marketing and entrepreneurs looking to do business in Africa will find Dynamics of Marketing in African Nations a valuable tool in understanding the economic development of Africa and its opportunities.

How do you know if a Rolling Stocks moves up or down? .......2006-05-08
This book may help you, trader better!
When do you buy? When do you sell?
Mainly focus under $5 stocks.
90% of the stock player's loose money since they have no idea which way a stock will roll next.
They are too emotional to get in a trade at a top and are afraid to enter at the bottom.
This book will explain what to look for and when is the right time to enter a trade and exit a trade.
After reading this book, I made money. Still useful info!.......2006-02-28
It has been over 5 years since I found and read this book. After reading it, I opened an on-line trading account, started following the guidelines in the book (the first part, not Options), and made money. I went on to read other books and trade using other methods. I believe it is working for me because I learned this method first. Now I have run into this listing on Amazon and would like to say it was a great book that opened up a whole world for me, by giving me a safe entry into trading and a method to fall back on in difficult markets. Read this book, read between the lines as well, and add this method to your investment repertoire! I thought since the book is older now, you'd like to read my review, 'cause I am still using what I learned from this book today.
Making $$$ on the ups and downs of stocks.......2004-09-01
Never has there been a better time to utilize rolling stocks than like right now. And by far, Rolling Stocks by Gregory Witt is the best guide on how to profitably use Rolling Stocks.
Some people I have talked with have been dissappointed trying to play rolling stocks but in every case I have found that they picked the wrong stocks. They felt that since all stocks move up and down, just buy a stock on a dip and ride it up. Doesn't work that way.
Gregory Witt offers successful strategies on how to profitably, I repeat, profitably play rolling stocks. Witt makes several points that are worth repeating:
1) Rolling Stocks are more commonly found in the lower price
ranges
2) Lower priced stocks roll faster
3) Lower priced stocks have greater percentage increases
4) Rolling stocks tend to emerge after a stock has fallen from
a higher price level
5) Rolling stocks have a tendency to go up after they finish
rolling
6) Rolling stocks tend to have predictive stochastics
7) Rolling stocks are less likely to be found in large,
profitable companies
Rolling Stocks shows you both how to play rolling stocks and where to find them. Another place to find them is at www.wadecook.org.
Highly recommend Rolling Stocks for anyone who wants to learn how to cash flow the stock market. Additional i nformation can be found in Wall Street Money Machine VOL 1 and Wade Cook's Stock Picking Handbook.
Easy, predictable and duplicatable.......2004-07-11
Everybody knows that stocks go up and down right? But how do you know what the highs and the lows are and how to plat them to make money? Gregory Witt answers that with this excellent book called rolling stocks.
Rolling stocks are actually channelling stocks. Stock market technicians know that certain stocks move up and down within a range. It is predictable, duplicatable and easy to do...when you know how. Gregory Witt provides the know how.
Rolling Stocks added excitement to my dull portfolio and actually turned stagnant equities into cash flow. It's worth a read. Great book.
Let The Profits Roll.......2004-07-07
I really liked this book. This was the first trading strategy I learned and mastered. This strategy and the techniques in this book has made me money. Although I've gotten into other trading strategies, I still love rolling stocks because the concept is fairly simplistic.
Witt's book is well-written without being either too easy or too hard to understand. My book is all marked up with all sorts of little notes throughout. His examples were also easy for me to follow since I also have TC-2000, a technical software.
This book is good for beginning traders on rolling stocks. I even think for seasoned traders this is a good review book.

many important themes.......2005-04-19
A must read book for lovers and haters of Capitalism. If you want problems solved, this book offers a very interesting guide.
Most people think government interferes with business, and media
interferes with education. This book shows how the opposite can and should be the case. The book talks about entrepreneurship, technological change, and scenario planning. There are also some
interesting interviews with a variety of thought leaders.
The author seems very interested in using cable TV technologies to widely distribute education. It seems that this interest is not shared by many in the cable TV industry today.
A must-read book for entrepreneurs as well intrapreneurs.......2000-05-18
I have always enjoyed reading books by entrepreneurs, particularly those who are willing to share their strategic thinking thought processes behind their entrepreneurial successes.
From my personal perspective, just the author's various scanning methods and scenario building methodology (with case studies) as well as information resources outlined in his book are already worth the price you pay for the book.
Most entreprenuers-authors talk about environmental scanning (a very important input part of strategic thinking process) but often do not share their tactical approaches. This author does very well and quite in depth. Also, he outlines the scenario building process (a seemingly complex thinking process according to several business/management books) in only 7 simple steps. He has a website which readers can access using a password code given in the book but unfortunately his does not have much new stuff other that what is already in the book.
The book is also interspersed with insightful interviews with leading thinkers, whose books I have also enjoyed reading, e.g. Alvin Toffler, Richard Saul Wurman, Thoedore Modis, and Andrew Garvin.
On the whole, this is a very light, easy-to-read and no-frills book, and I strongly recommend it to all entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.

Book Description
Although land reform in Latin America has long been heralded by scholars and development economists, as well as by revolutionaries, as the essential ingredient for economic growth, the results of actual land reform projects have been largely disappointing. This book attempts to identify the reasons for these results by analyzing some of the microeconomic factors underlying the inadequate performance of reform sector agriculture. Basing her analysis on a detailed case study of agrarian reform in the Dominican Republic, Meyer deals specifically with the organizational structure of the reform project itself, evaluating the relative efficiency of associative, individual, and collective organizational structures. Meyer begins by providing both a comprehensive survey of the issues surrounding agrarian reform projects in Latin America and an introduction to the history, land settlement patterns, and agriculture of the Dominican Republic. The following chapters detail the history and institutional structure of agrarian reform in the Dominican Republic, review the literature relevant to the study of reform sector projects, and offer case studies of particular reform projects. The author then develops original microeconomic models to explore the implications of the individual, collective, and associative organizational structures. Taken as a whole, Meyer's study provides both theoretical and empirical evidence to support the superior efficiency of the associative organizational structure over either the individual or collective farming approach in the Dominican Republic.

A Child's Story of Survival.......2003-05-28
This beautifully written memoir documents the author's childhood as a Polish Jew who fled with her parents from Krakow, Poland ahead of the German army. Eventually deported to a forced labor camp deep in Soviet Russia, this story of survival is also a testament of love-the love of a large family whose Polish roots extend back more than 500 years and the love of undemonstrative Victorian parents who sought to shelter their young daughter from the horror of their surroundings.
"Like Leaves in the Wind" chronicles the decency of simple Russian peasants and fellow deportees who endure unspeakably harsh winters and bug-infested summers. The reality of their desperate conditions and their ultimate survival come vividly to life in the pages of this book.
Having endured the Russian camp, the author and her parents returned to Krakow in 1946 and only then learn the fate of most of their extended family. There, this child of ten also encounters the mindless cruelty of Polish school children whose anti-Semitism ostracizes her to a lonely existence in which books become her companions.
The author provides a valuable glimpse into life in a Russian forced labor camp, recounted through the eyes of an innocent child. The book offers insights into the forced deportation of more than one million Polish citizens (Jewish as well as Christian) to the USSR during World War II, an aspect of the war that has not been widely chronicled.
The author's personal recollections are enhanced by a series of postcards from her grandmothers to her parents in Russia, discovered in her father's papers following his death. Never discussed during her parents' life, the postcards offer glimpses into the lives of Jews in Poland and Russia after 1939.
Decades after she and her parents returned to Poland and then emigrated to France and finally to the United States, Rita Blattberg Blumstein has fashioned a record that goes well beyond the dangers and hardships they endured in war torn Poland and Russia. This memoir is a valuable addition to the testimony of Holocaust survivors.
