Customer Reviews:
"The Blue Bible for Albania".......2006-03-18
I lived and worked for 18 months in Tirana and traveled throughout the country from Kukes to Korca to Saranda to Shengjin and I always, always carried my Blue Guide. It was indispensable for my personal exploration of the country and allowed me to act as "tour guide" for visitors. I used the Albania-only edition until this edition came out and immediately upgraded. Any book can tell you how to get to a country or which hotels are available, but they quickly become obsolete. By focusing more on the history, culture, and environment, Pettifer avoids that trap. Albania changes every day and any attempt to recommend which hotel is good, which is safe, which is cheapest will be oudated before the ink is dry. This book tells you more about why things are the way they are. It also covers more areas off the beaten path. Yes, I own the Bradt guide too, but prefer the more detailed, denser content of the Blue Guide.
buy Blue Guide for history rather than travel.......2004-12-07
I found this book in the bookstores in Albania in both English and Albnanian versions. As is typical of the Blue Guide publications, it is geared more toward a historical rather than travel context.
It is somewhat 'dated' because Albania has developed quite a bit since 2000. Roads and accomodations are improving. Even Internet cafes can be had in most of the cities, although inconsistent power is still a problem in many areas.
Now that Gillian Gloyer's guide is available, I would recommend buying it instead since it is better as a travel resource.
Ivory Tower travel guide!.......2003-09-16
This reminds me of one of those coffee table books people used to buy because they felt they ought.
a) because it is the only guide on the market
b) because every other traveller seems to have one
c) it looks nice
Whether it suits its purpose is quite another matter. Put simply if you're into history in a big way and really want to take on the Albanian cause then this will be indispensible.
If you want an up to date guide to the actual practical information the book is almost useless. First, it is clear the author had a lot of help on the way from prearranged contacts eager to be in the book and second the author obviously had a car and I would hazard a guess a driver (at the cost of the Blue Guide). Lonely Planet/Rough Guide this is not.
Which traveller/backpacker is going to hire cars or stay in the Rogner International Hotel in Tirane? This is in essence an `ivory tower` travel guide. For instance, we didn't stay in any hotel mentioned in the guide as,apart from one, were all new and excellent (could teach the Greeks a few lessons!).
You don't need to be told of the state of the roads as in the book as you will be on the bus experiencing this at 40 bumps a minute. What you do need is up to date info on the LATEST accommodation, a lot more maps (particularly of Gjirokaster) and the maps that are there reviewed for correctness. You also need a more practical Albanian Language section to go with your dictionary than the one in this guide.
Also useful would be a guide to Corfu as this will be a booming crossing point in years to come.
If you are going to Albania and feel you MUST have a guide book and/or seriously interested in going into every historical/archealogical nook or cranny then by all means buy it. If nto stay away.
good information on sites.......2003-02-10
The details given in the book on the sites to visit are very good and detailed. A good addition would be more maps that show how to get there, since there are normally no sign and if you don't have a local tour guide or driver, it's difficult to find. The recommendations for hotels and restaurants could be better. Overall, a good book to travel around in Albania and it has been very helpful to me. The writer seems to have a good knowledge of the sites.
A must have!.......2002-06-30
I am a devoted academic researcher on Albanian culture and this is the best guide book out on the market that offers wonderful information on travel into Albania and Kosovo. This guide book not only has useful information on travel conditions and the best way to explore the area, but it also has some wonderful information regarding the culture and history of the Albanian nation. This book is a must have for anyone that is interested in travelling to this culturally complex region in the Balkans. This book is the first thing that I am taking with me when I set off to travel to Shqiperia and Shqiperia e Madhe (Albania and Greater Albania). It is a shame that Lonely Planet has not produced a guide book into this part of the world. It would be fantastic if they did. For the meantime this Blues Guide has everything you need to make your trip into the region a successful and productive one.

In the Fifties, he was an agent for J. Edgar Hoover's "Top Hoodlum Program." He masterminded the first electronic surveillance of a Mafia headquarters. Sam Giancana put a $100,000 contract on his life. Now, Bill Roemer, the FBI crime expert who's had more face-to-face confrontations with mobsters than anyone in law enforcement history, tells his electrifying life story. From his key role in the lives of John and Robert Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, Phyllis McGuire, and Marilyn Monroe, to the run ins with Anthony "Tony Batters" Accardo, Murray "The Camel" Humphreys and Jackie Cerone that made him the nemesis of the Chicago mob, here is a chillingly authentic account that ranks as one of the finest chronicles in true crime.
Customer Reviews:
Readable Look at the Chicago Mob.......2007-01-16
Retired FBI Agent William Roemer (1926-1996) details the workings of the Crime Syndicate in Chicago from the late 1940's into the 1980's - mirroring Roemer's career with the FBI. Roemer spent decades fencing with Chicago mobsters and mob bosses, including such figures as Tony Spilotro, Murray "The Camel" Humphreys, Sam Giancana, Tony Accardo, etc. Readers see how the mob operated, drawing its income from a combination of theft, fraud, gambling, sex, street taxes, and other venues, while enforcing discipline via intimidation and murder. We also see that the mob's moderately-successful ban against drugs resulted not from social conscience but from desires for preservation - Accardo and other bosses realized that drugs brought added public disdain and extra government heat, while turning some mobsters into junkies.
This is a very readable and informative book, but it suffers a bit from a couple questionable claims plus self-boasting by the author. Still, these pages give readers a view of Chicago's mob/mafia syndicate, one that dates back to before the arrival of Al Capone.
An Extraordinary look inside the worl of La Costra Nostra.......1999-07-28
I thought this book was magnificent. Roemer is is genuine in depicting the power that the mob had over anything and everything...He talks in detail about Accardo, giancana and the master fixers..aka the curruption squad of Murry Humphreys, Gus Alex..It's full of murders and double crosses..all in all it makes you feel like your right there...A must read
Electrifying, an excellent and compelling true inside story........1999-02-23
This book covers everything. Tells all about Sam "MO" Giancana to everything about Tony "Batters" Accardo. The details are fascinating and chilling. Really interesting and unbelievable. Makes you feel like you are Roemer himself. Great book!!!!!

Book Description
The Barbie Doll Boom features virtually all the U.S. dolls and a sampling of the most popular foreign dolls beginning in 1986, the year Mattel released the first doll especially made for adult collectors. This beautiful book features more than 400 full-color photos of over 1,000 dolls. Each doll is identified and valued directly below its photo, making this book very easy to use for both the child and adult collectors. 1996 values. REVIEW: Planet Patchwork Quilting Bookbriefs says this book "contains a well-done primer in foundation techniques, and dozens of creative border designs, both traditional and contemporary. Perhaps most important, the authors provide a series of questions to ponder as you decide what kind of border you want."
Customer Reviews:
Coverage rather sparce.......2000-03-31
The title was a little misleading..I was expecting a price guide from 1986 to 1999 but it only covers a few dolls and a lot of international makers..which we will see only a few in the US..The pictures took up most of the content and very little on the actual price guide...Disapointing to say the very least..about 500 pictures and not much else...

Customer Reviews:
It works - Great book!.......2006-10-06
I'm such as believer in teaching your baby to sign after using this book. By 15 months he was using 15+ signs on a regular basis. In playgroups I would observe other toddlers pointing and crying, with everyone frustrated, but not my baby! He could "tell" me what he wanted through signing. I especiallly like this book because it gives lots of suggested activities - everyday life stuff - for ways to build signs into your daily routine; there's no better teacher. It's not just about learning the signs. It's about using them in real-live, everyday ways that make your lives easier and truly gives you the ability to commuicate with your baby - in a way otherwise not possible. Buy it, READ it, USE IT!
Not Enough Signs.......2006-04-26
I purchased this book after reading reviews. I debated between this one and Teach Your Tot to Sign. However, I returned it within days of receiving it. I realized I don't need activities - I can sign along with songs I already sing to my daughter or while doing everyday activities. What we needed was a more complete list of signs. This book was too limited. My daughter is 11 months old and pointing at things constantly and I'd like to be able to teach her the sign at the time she's interested. It didn't include signs that we need now, like balloon, apple, banana, clock, tree, bike. If you only want to teach your child a few basic signs and want to have fun doing it - this book will work, otherwise get something else. I bought Teach Your Tot to Sign and love it.
Most Effective Strategies for Incorporating Signing Into Daily Life.......2006-04-12
I've always thought that using flashcards to teach things to babies was ridiculous, but I still assumed that it would be necessary to set aside a specific time in the day for sign language lessons. I researched many of the available options, and I found the strategies in this book to be the best of them all. They are easy to understand and implement, and they work! Without much effort, I reached a whole new level of communication and understanding with a toddler!
Wonderful Book!.......2006-04-11
I bought this book while I was pregnant with my daughter. Being much interested in teaching my child ASL I was happy to find this book. In reading it, it has helped me so very much with understanding the proper way to teach signs. We started at 5 and 1/2 months old and now at 11 1/2 months old she does 3 signs on her own. I love the fast refrence index of signs in the back plus all the Q&A. It really is a great book and has been invaluable in my teaching my child ASL. I highly reccomend this book, its a definate must have!!
Wonderful!.......2006-03-30
When my baby was born I didn't know if I wanted to sign with her. I knew that research studies have shown that many babies who sign start speaking later and I certainly didn't want that to happen. Now that my baby is six months old I have put those concerns aside. Very early on I started speaking to my baby using patterns sometimes just vowel sounds, then consonant/vowel combinations, then "cat", "rat", "sat" sequences and she was facinated. I used very specific words and said things the same way each time so she'd aquire meanings for the words. I also started finger spelling to her the words we commonly used. She loved it! Just with doing that my baby was babbling with her voice/mouth and with her hands by three months!
At five months I decided that I wanted to sign with my baby because she gets so frustrated with not being able to communicate what she wanted. I did not want to have to go through this for the next year or more while I wait for her speech to develop, so I went looking for materials. I sign some ASL and a lot of "straight" English and wish I signed better ASL since it is more efficient and useful. Because of this I decided I wanted to start her off with ASL (American Sign Language). I was refered to this book along with the "Sign with Your Baby" video by Garcia. I'm so glad I did.
This book starts out with the whys - why sign, why ASL, and gives so many wonderful examples. True, if you already want to sign this might not be so useful to you, but I really enjoyed the heartwarming stories of babies communicating what they really needed to say or just wanting to learn more about their world. And some of these babies were signing at four months of age! She also gives examples of babies who started using language more quickly once they started signing.
Most of the rest of the book are activities to do with your baby to teach and use the signs - and my favorite part - pictures of babies signing. While this book isn't terribly useful for someone who knows instinctively (or otherwise) what to do, it is very useful for those of us who do or don't know most of the signs and are just having a hard time coming up with ideas on what to do to create the opportunities to use them. I've also found this book helps me identify my own baby's efforts.
Please note that ASL (American Sign Language) is exactly that - the sign language used by the Deaf communities in the United States. Other parts of the world use different sign languages.
At the end of this book is a typical sign dictionary and after that is a dictionary that explains how a baby might do each sign. I am sure they separated these so it was quick to look up the picture you needed so you can sign it, but it would have been useful to have the description of how your baby might do the sign with the pictures. It would have been really nice if they could have put some of the pictures of babies signing these signs with these descriptions too. I know I would have spent more time lingering in this section if they had.
So, in the end all you need to sign with your baby is an ASL sign language dictionary and keen observation of your baby for his/her own signs. But if you feel you need some suggestions and tips I'd recommend this book and the "Sign with Your Baby" video. Oh yes, after only three days of signing my baby was signing "milk" and "finished", a couple days later "potty" and a few days after that "up" ...she will be seven months old next week. We couldn't be happier.
Customer Reviews:
Nice insight.......2007-02-07
It is not as easy a read as Stone's van Gog biography Lust For Life, but for fans, it's a deep book.
Vincent tells of how he went into the fields to paint, and then a rain storm came. He sought meager shelter behind a big tree while it lasted, and then resumed. And because he had started with a low vantage point, he now had to stand on his knees in the mud! He seems to merely mention this to point out why he considers common workman's clothes to be the artist's best friend...
He also tells how he went out to paint the sea, in a storm so strong he could barely stay on his feet. One painting got so full of sand from the beach that he went to a nearby inn and retouched it... and then went back out into the storm to finish it with fresh impressions!
Today, most of us: "Go out with the camera today? Nah, it's a bit nippy, and I just got the Sopranos on DVD..."
Irving Stone edited Dear Theo, and while he may have done a good job generally, I think it was a disservice to the material to not indicate where he cut it. It is just one long text, no dates and no indication where each quote starts or ends.
Let the reader beware - this is more novel than letters.......2005-04-22
I, like the many reviewers of this book, was enthralled and inspired by this collection of letters when I first read it 25 years ago. I have recommended it to many friends. At the time I would have given it five stars or even more if they were available. Irving Stone writes in his preface "My aim has been to edit the 1670 pages of material down to a swiftly flowing, continuous normal-sized book..." He succeeded but even 25 years ago I was a little disturbed by the complete absence of indications where exactly Mr. Stone had done his cutting, or his editing. Today, in the age of internet we can now do some easy checking. The unabridged letters are on the net and reveal that basically what this Dear Theo is, is another novel written by Irving Stone. There is almost no resemblance to the original letters. The novelist has used his talents and the raw material to create a beautiful saga. Worth reading, but let the reader beware.
A fire starter.......2002-11-03
These letters speak the truth of van Gogh. This book opens a window of knowledge on a man so misunderstood to the world. At 14, I absolutely am in love with this book. "Dear Theo" has ignited a fire in my soul, a burning desire to study art and the men behind the works.
Interesting and revealing.......2001-01-15
Vincent Van Gogh was a great painter, but not a writer. So these letters are of interest in terms of history and painting. The life of Van Gogh is better exposed here than it would have been in a "real" autobiography, because Theo, his younger brother, was the only real friend Vincent ever had. He was his supporter, admirer and listener, and in fact Vincent had an emotional dependence on his brother. People interested in the process of artistic creation and creativity will find this book of enormous value and interest, since Van Gogh speaks a lot about that process in himself, one of the greatest painters of all time. But it is true, as one reviewer said, that these letters include, each and every one, eternal whining and begging from Vincent to his brother. He was, of course, always out of money and, as a genius really disconnected from the common world, unable to make a living by conventional activities. So he depended almost entirely on Theo. I would like to insist in that, although by no means a literary accomplishment, these letters are worth reading, since they expose naked the soul of a great artist and an extremely sensitive man, certainly a tortured and twisted soul.
here's your unadulterated chance to see just how screwed..........2000-12-13
here's your unadulterated chance to see just how screwed up van gogh was. letter after letter after letter sitting on the pity pot writing to his younger brother whining for money, crying for assistance, guilting his brother into supporting his art...his art habit...his art addiction. ya know, after reading this book my perspective on van gogh changed. he struck me as an ultra-martyr (in the icky sense of the word), so big into self-pity. now, having since read a little more of his history - screwy parents, etc. - i have some more compassion for the guy and for why he was so screwed up, but these letters are honestly nothing short of tedious. one after the other, whining for money, then waxing eloquent about his art, which actually struck me often as quite manipulative - like he was justifying his existence and his productivity to theo.
anyway, i still think van gogh is a wonderful artist, but what a messed up life - can't miss that from these letters. but god, i wish they'd been even more edited. and one other thing - irving stone (the editor) thinks van gogh is one of the world's greatest writers and philosophers of all times, in addition to being the honcho primo artist. well, as for philosopher, sorry irving, no. the guy was miserable and depressed and lonely, and seemed to philosophize in his letters to just keep contact with the world, but his philosophy gets under my skin.
