Author Cynthia Harriman has been there--England, France, Spain--and done that: a husband, two kids, and four months of travel. This book answers important questions such as "Why take your kids to Europe?" and then tells you how to do it. Of the "Why?" Harriman writes, "The best family travel involves staying put, taking it slowly, learning more about everyday life. Leave the kids behind, and you're on vacation in Europe. Take them along and you're temporarily living in Europe." The "How?" is laid out in 22 practical chapters that are truly fun to read, accented by useful tidbits from other world travelers who have globetrotted with kids. This book is an essential resource for anyone considering or preparing to embark on a family journey.
Book Description
Can an eight-year-old have fun in Florence? Can you entertain a teenager in London? Can an extended family vacation to Europe be a unique and rewarding experience? Absolutely, says Cynthia Harriman, who has gathered the wisdom gained from months of travel abroad with her family into this comprehensive and essential guide. Complete with anecdotes and witty cartoons, this book includes invaluable tips about where to stay, where to eat, language skills, finding affordable fun for the entire family and more. and I'm not even going to Europe.......2003-02-18
This book has been an excellent resource for us, and we aren't even going to Europe. We are travelling abroad with our children, and we now have ideas about how to make boring things interesting, as well as how to anticipate problems before they happen. A lot of great information for family travel!
Confidence Building - We Can Do It!.......2003-01-22
Take Your Kids to Europe delivers the feeling that even if you haven't travelled a great deal or haven't been to Europe with your kids, there is no mystery to it all. You don't have to be a jet set family, you simply think things through, examine your family dynamics, get everyone involved and go! The author helps you understand, especially through examples, that you need to adjust your itineraries to kids' ages and interests. Some of the best times are the unexpected ones and you need to leave yourselves and your plans open for simply soaking in your destination.
Required reading for any family planning a European trip.

Helpful tips for family travel.......2002-08-13
I used TYKE to plan a trip for my family of five to Ireland, the book gave great resouces for lodging that enabled me to rent two houses for a fraction of the cost that I would have paid using traditional sources and the houses- in one case a renovated coast guard station- were fantastic. I plan to use the book again to plan next year's trip to Sweden.
A helpful book........2000-08-19
We found this book very helpful. We read it before taking our young children to Paris. We looked in it again the following year before we went to London.
DON'T TAKE YOUR KIDS TO EUROPE.......2000-08-04
THIS WAS THE MOST USELESS PIECE OF WRITING I HAD TO ENCOUNTER IN THE PAST 10 YEARS. AS A FATHER OF 3 YOUNG TEENAGERS, I SUSPECT MS. HARRIMAN DOESN'T HAVE ANY CHILDREN OF HER OWN, OR SHE WOULDN'T BE WRITING SO MANY INCONSISTENCIES ABOUT CHILDREARING.

Book Description
As a cop Ron Previte was corrupt. As a mobster he was brutal. And in his final role, as a confidential informant to the FBI, Previte was deadly. The Last Gangster is his story -- the story of the last days of the Philadelphia mob, and of the clash of generations that brought it down once and for all.
For thirty-five years Ron Previte roamed the underworld. A six foot-tall, 300-pound capo in the Philadelphia-South Jersey crime family, he ran every mob scam and gambit from drug trafficking and prostitution to the extortion of millions from Atlantic City. By the 1990s, Previte, an old-school workhorse, found himself answering to younger mob bosses like "Skinny Joey" Merlina. Spoiled, cocky, and careless, the young, up-and-coming gangsters were hungry for the media's attention and the public's recognition. Gone were the days of loyalty and discretion.
Convinced that the honor of the "business" was over, Previte became the FBI's secret weapon in an intense and highly personalized war on the Philadelphia mob. Operating with the same guile, wit, and stone-cold bravado that had made him a force in the underworld, and armed with only a wiretap, Previte recorded it all: the murder, the mayhem, and the betrayal. In The Last Gangster, George Anastasia -- the critically acclaimed author of Blood and Honor and The Goodfella Tapes -- tells Previte's story for the first time. Unflinching and enthralling, The Last Gangster is the true story of how the once monolithic, highly organized, powerful, and secretive Cosa Nostra was defeated by its own hand.
Customer Reviews:
Good mob book.......2007-05-07
I love mob books and this one doesn't dissappoint. Must have for the mob book lover.
Boring.......2006-05-22
Previte sounds like a loud mouth braggert to me. He is one of those guys who talks like hes done it all but sounds like a phony. The FBI are not as dumb as Previte says they are. I doubt he recieved all the money he says the government gave him. The other characters in the book are dull, immature. If you want to read about the mob try a book about Chicago or NY.
HILLARIOUS!!.......2006-03-10
First it is known in the LCN circles that former members of law enforcement should not become made members. This is one of the rules but yet Previte slipped in. The whole recollection of Merlino (a former racing jockey) and Ralph Natale are hillarious. Time and time again Previte explains how these two could not get on the same page.
Anastasia himself gets better with time. He is Philadelphia's Jerry Capeci. Despite the fact that in the scheme of things Previte was a high-level in a crime family that pales in comparison under the previous leaders. A good read and likeable subject!
Another great book from George Anastasia.......2005-12-19
Long considered the master among Philadelphia crime reporters, Anastasia delivers another fantastic chapter in the long, sordid decline of the mafia. Ironically, both his writing and reporting seem to get better as the statue of the people he's covering shrinks.
Where Angelo Bruno was once a godfather straight out of central casting, a force to be reckoned with, the Phily mob today is little more than a bunch of guys hanging out on the street corner. Ron Previte, the former cop turned wise guy, is actually a pretty interesting character - a murderous scamp who used his status as a longtime informant to become a capo - but that's about it. The rest of the wiseguys we see here are straight out of the Sopranos. And to be honest, the one real problem I had with the book is that Anastasia reuses a lot of material from his earlier works. How many times can you read about how photogenic Joseph Merlino is or what a nutcase Nicky Scarfo was?
Still, this is a great read and anyone who loves reading about organized crime will get a kick out of this book. Pick it up for Christmas today.
MOBSTER HISTORY...GREAT!!!.......2005-09-24
This was a very informative book about the the "mob" & its supposed ending, however, it skipped around so much from the beginning to the end, the main stream was mixed. The gruesome details were very graphic at times to make you realize this was not just a "fun" group. If you like to follow mobster history, this would be the book for you...Have fun reading!!

Great Book!!.......2006-12-16
This is a great well written book. I love the chapter on massage with the pictures and great explanations on How-To. The intoductions to every chapter are great as are all the contents in the chapter. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go "The Natural Way"!!
Chapters link common horse conditions to effective natural healing choices .......2006-06-23
Plenty of books cover horse health - but how many focus on natural treatments and options for preventing illness? Any who want to go the herbal route for the horse will welcome a book which covers not just herbs but massage, aromatherapy, vibrational healing and more. Chapters link common horse conditions to effective natural healing choices and expand greatly on the options a horse owner can choose for optimum horse health.

Book Description
Children:The Challenge gives the key to parents who seek to build trust and love in their families, and raise happier, healthier, and better behaved children. Based on a lifetime of experience with children--their problems, their delights, their challenges--Dr. Rudolf Dreikurs, one of America's foremost child psychiatrists presents an easy to follow program that teaches parents how to cope with the common childhood problems that occur from toddler through preteen years. This warm and reassuring reference helps parents to understand their children's actions better, giving them the guidance necessary to discipline lovingly and effectively.
Customer Reviews:
Discipline with insight.......2007-05-15
I would recommend this book to parents. It helps the reader to look at how situations are promoted through our actions and word usage. The book is a bit annoying as it is outdated in word usage, a little stereotyped as to "mother", "father" roles. However, still a good read, promoting democracy and independece to our children.
A MUST READ!.......2007-03-14
I am not done reading this book yet however, the tips are wonderful for any parent who is having troubles with their kid. Or this book is great for first time parents who want to raise their kid different from the way they were raised.
Principles endure, titles change, this is the Best.......2007-03-09
This book is just SO GOOD. I have been using it for over 35 years now and every time I pick it up I am reminded, with pleasure, of how much it has helped me parent, grandparent and now professionally "parent" as a nanny.
There are many excellent parenting guides out there but this is the true original. Some of the examples are a bit dated and reflect a less complicated time but the PRINCIPLES of effective parenting are well in place.
I have taught parenting classes for 30 years and always have parents tell me that when they read it they feel like the author must have been looking into the windows of their home because he knows just what goes on. What's even better is that he tells you what to do about it.
The chapters on Encouragement, Natural and Logical Consequences and The Child's Mistaken Goals can't be beat. Even if you just read those chapters you would have your money's worth.
This isn't a 'fast read', but is one that you will turn to again and again because it explains the principles of rearing children so well. Wonderful examples.
The Best of the Basics.
Best Parenting Book on the Market for Half a Century!.......2007-02-11
As a retired licensed professional counselor, educational psychologist, and educator over a practice spanning 40 years, I have found no other parenting guide as easy to understand and apply as "Children the Challenge." It allows the reader, be they brand new parent or professional, to make effective use of the common sense techniques which follow the first rule of medicine "Do no harm." It's fun to read and in each chapter you find yourself saying "Why didn't I think of that?" or "I never thought of it that way before, but it makes perfect sense." It is well organized, with each chapter heading stating the basic "rules" of positive parenting. I buy a copy for all new parents on my gift list, including my own children and now grandchildren.
Fabulous Book.......2007-01-12
This is a fabulous books that reminds you of probably all the things you set out to do for your children but get distracted along the way, for all kinds of reasons. Helps you refocus on how to help you child grow.

Book Description
Joseph Cotten’s story begins in Tidewater, Virginia, moves on to an episode as a Miami ‘potato salad’ tycoon and then brings us to his first big break as an actor, in the New York theatre. Cotten describes how he met the flamboyant Orson Welles- at a radio audition at which Welles set a wastepaper basket on fire- and their involvement with the Mercury theatre. This led to Cotten’s first film role, as Orson’s co-star in Citizen Kane, quickly followed by parts in The Magnificent Ambersons and The Third Man. Orson- perhaps the only man to use Churchill as a stooge while trying to set up a film deal- was a lifelong friend of Cotten’s, and this autobiography was one of the last works he read before his untimely death in 1985.
Cotten takes us behind the scenes of his stage plays and films, recalling amusing and intimate stories of his adventures with Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, David Niven, David O. Selznick, Alfred Hitchcock and many others.
Sensitive to his own motivations, frank about his marriages and warmly revealing about himself and his friends, Cotten has written much more than the usual film star biography. His skills as an actor have made him a master of character and dramatic momentum, and he brings the same talents to his writing. Vanity Will get You Somewhere is a generous, loving and humorous portrait of a man without a shred of vanity in his nature- and of his friends and colleagues in the larger-than-life world of show business.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as I once thought but still a fun read........2007-04-03
I bought the hardback version of this book when it was first published in 1987, and I still have that copy. I was at the time a big fan of Joseph Cotten's films, and I still believe he was one of the best, most natural actors of the 1940s and 1950s. Of course, his career took him from stage to radio, from film to television and back to film, and if you take the time to look at his filmography you see him starring with some of the most famous movie stars of the twentieth century. He certainly was underrated, but I think that as you read his autobiography you'll see that he was an extremely humble man who truly enjoyed his life and was a dedicated husband as well.
His autobiography falls into two parts, from the beginning of his life to the death of his first wife, and then from the time he meets his second wife, Patricia Medina, to his recollections of a serious stroke.
If you are interested in Joseph Cotten and the loving relationship he had with Patricia Medina, you really need to read her own autobiography, entitled Laid Back in Hollywood: Remembering, and available second-hand on Amazon.com. It tells the story of her life up to the time that Joseph Cotten died, and I was moved by how much they loved one another. It is very inspiring.
Looking at both books together it does seem that Patricia Medina helped Joseph Cotten edit his own book, because she has a wacky sense of humor that comes through in both her book and the second half of Vanity Will Get You Somewhere. The other thing I noticed about this book when I revisited it was that it is somewhat sparse in some details, and other things are written about with great detail. I think the first half is actually better written.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Joseph Cotten, any of the films he made, or to read about what it was like to be a movie star during Hollywood's glamorous heyday. It was also fun to read about Joseph Cotten's many travels. I remember visiting Venice for the first time and excitedly going to Harry's Bar because I read about it in Cotten's book.
A Must Read.......2000-10-05
This was one of the best autobiographies I have ever read! For any Joseph Cotten fan or classic movie fan it is a must. Joseph Cotten reveals everything from life as a child in VA to college to becoming a star, and all of the relationships he made along the way. I picked the book up once and didn't put it down until I had read every word.
