Great Resource for traveling.......2005-09-27
The book was well written and organized. It was easy to look up information about all different types of subjects. We used this book on our trip to Cancun and we maximized our adventures during our stay.

if your new to this part of the world you need this book.......2005-07-20
Found it to be a little out of date i.e. the toll roads are almost over US$18 to get from Cancun to Valladolid and only take cash! But, this book offers so much local knowledge that it is a necessity to someone new to the area.
The book is also a little weak when it comes to the ruins - only list 4 of them. So if you go to see and want to know more on the Maya ruins get a good map of the Yucatan and a book specializing on the ruins themselves.
Despite these minor issues, if you want to manage yourself and not go on one of the bus tours you need this book!!!
Worked for this dummy!.......2004-06-25
I've never been to Cancun before and had no idea where to start planning my trip. I bought this book because it promised to be an easy-to-use reference for the first time visitor. And that's exactly what I found. This guide covered more than I expected, with detailed information on Cozumel, Playa del Carman, and more. The authors obviously knew what they were talking about, as the savvy advice given in the book made my decisions easy to make!
I Also recommended: 'A Tourist in the Yucatan' fun thriller!
A Real How-To Manual For Mexico.......2004-06-01
I hadn't been to Cancun in twenty years and my traveling companion had never been, so we were looking for more than a book that outlined the location and services of area hotels. We wanted tips, how-to's, cautions, insider secrets and local recommendations. This book had them all. While it's true that the book highlights only the authors' picks for restuarants and hotels and can't be called a comprehensive hotel guide, it was invaluable in the information it lent regarding phones, transportation, money, fees and schedules, customs, activities and more. And when we finally got to Cancun and Cozumel, my companion and I were not only informed and prepared but delighted to find that virtually all of the information (both subjective and objective) was correct. The local restuarant we'd highlighted in the book turned out to be a word-of-mouth tradition in Cozumel. We chose our hotel based on the book's description of offshore snorkeling and found out it was widely known on the island for unrivaled aquatic beauty. True, I could've found much of this information by combing the Internet, but I didn't have to thanks to this book, which also includes any contact info you could ever need. We referred to it constantly while in Mexico and can't reccommend what we came to call "The Book" highly enough.
Truly for Dummies.......2004-02-02
I found this book to be unuseful. It talks too much about things that most people would know anyways. The book doesn't talk about many hotels. It's more or less a overview and doesn't pay attention to detail.

Only one travel guide this year!.......2006-09-01
Excellent resource for both first time or returning travelers. Easy to read, excellent overview of the area and history. Even though we vacation there often, we will be taking this book with us this winter.
Good but Lacking .......2006-08-29
Good Information but not great. I ordered this because I wanted the "inside" scoop on some hotels. i've been to mexico once and found this guide to be good for the beginner but not detailed. The main reason I bought this was to find out about 2 particular (4 star) hotels and the book didn't mention either of them...at all..not even on their maps! disappointing. I was hoping the book would detail all the restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions - it seemed it only listed some, not all. Like I said - good book to start with but lacks thorough-ness.

Picasso's 'Les demoiselles d'Avignon' (Masterpieces of Western Painting)
ASIN: 1590510232 |
Book Description
Few paintings have been as extensively analyzed as Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, and yet, according to Wayne Andersen's radical new interpretation of the painting, it has been repeatedly misrepresented and misunderstood by biographical novelizing and reductive psychoanalysis. Andersen seeks to rescue the painting from the myths that obscure its origins, which depict it variously as an outburst of rage against his live-in lover, or as an act of vengeance for Picasso's having contracted syphilis from a prostitute; such myths are the source of the artist's reputation for misogyny. Looking back to the original sources of these stories, Andersen identifies a catalog of errors, passed from one author to another, which have distorted our view of Picasso.By studying X-rays of the finished canvas, Andersen reconstructs a lost version of Les Demoiselles, a first completion prior to the artist's epiphany at a display of African masks that inspired him to rework the painting. By refuting the scholarly assumption that the grotesquely painted heads of three of the figures are integral to Picasso's first conception, he shows that the original composition provides no evidence of Picasso's alleged horror of women.Supported by 200 illustrations, including 12 color plates, ranging from Picasso's drawings and paintings to contemporary pornography and photographs of prostitutes in brothels, Andersen's provocative arguments establish Picasso as a man who wrested sexuality from the aesthetics of art, and created a new and revolutionary way of seeing for the 20th Century.Written in clear, accessible prose, this book will spark another round of Picasso scholarship, and appeal to the general reader, the art historian, and the psychoanalyst alike.WAYNE ANDERSEN is Professor Emeritus, History, Theory, and Criticism of Art and Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the author of seven books, including Gauguin's Paradise Lost, named a New York Times Book of the Times, and Freud, Leonardo da Vinci and the Vulture's Tail (Other Press, 2000). He has lectured at several universities and art museums across the United States and abroad, and he has published essays and reviews on subjects ranging from Italian Renaissance to 20th-Century art.Critical Acclaim for Wayne Andersen's Freud, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Vulture's TailWayne Andersen is an infectious writer and an infectious thinker. His book on Leonardo and Freud has all the ingredients that make for an excellent read, where one learns as much about Freud as about Leonardo, and about Andersen himself in the bargain. James Beck, Professor of Art History, Columbia UniversityThe most fascinating autobiographical experiment that I have read since Erik Erikson's Young Man Luther. Thomas RosenthalA brilliantly complex and audacious book. One could not expect the amount of truth that Andersen brings forth. Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times

Revising and Rehabilitating Picasso's Demoiselles.......2002-05-20
The state of art history comes into qusetion when reading what Andersen has to say about Picasso's Brothel. How did so many errors and misinterpretaions get into the literature? Andersen reconstructs how the Demoiselles looked befor the epiphany that Picasso underwent on seeing tribal images in the Museum of Ethnology in the Trocadero. And based on that recconstruction, he proposes that the retrospective and determinist notions about the way the imagery evolved, and the psychoanalytic interpretations of Picasso as to his terror of women, should be completely revised.
Book Description
Wised Up is a story of atonement for Charlie Wilhelm, a career criminal who ended his life of crime the year he turned 40. Going to the FBI with no lawyer - and no criminal charges against him - he went undercover, wearing a wire to catch his life-long friends for drug dealing, bribery, loan sharking and murder. This intimate story, told in Charlie's voice, is the first to expose organized crime in Baltimore. It reveals the complex relationship between an informant and his FBI handlers, and explores the tormented mind of a man with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who faces the consequences of doing the right thing, while turning against his crime family.
Customer Reviews:
Wised Up by Charlie Wilhelm.......2005-09-08
As a Baltimore native, I enjoyed this book very much and would probably rate it a "5" based on my enjoyment only. However, thinking of others--not from the Baltimore area--it probably would not be quite as interesting. Knowing the area, and even some of the players, made it a quick read for me. In fact, it was too quick of a read. Made me wish there was more. . .
Who needs fiction?.......2005-08-30
"Wised Up" is an absolutely chilling account of organized crime in my home town, Baltimore. I previously believed that crime in this city was basically random and disorganized except for the activity of a few drug king pins. This book documents the organized superstructure of a very complex home grown "management system" of illegal activity. Moreover, it has no connection to the traditional Mafia. Charlie Wilhelm's candid revelation of his life including significant events is far more frightening and captivating then any of the "best seller" crime thrillers. He tells this story in a way that makes the reader "stand in his shoes" and experience Charlie's emotions as he reached a point of fear and ambivalence regarding his life of crime. We've all heard the "you-can't-get-out-of-it-once-you-get into-it" theme regarding the impact of an individual's participation in an organized crime syndicate. However, in this true story, you live the fear, the sleepless nights, the concern for love ones and the mental trepidation in a way that no fictional account can begin to relate.
Charlie's experience also revealed the level of corruption in Baltimore Law enforcement and City Government. Throughout the book, he provides examples of the impact of police on the take, city officials who are paid to look the other way, and even documemted leaks in the federal attorney general's office. In fact, once Charlie decided to extricate himself from this life, he had a major problem finding an official authority that he could trust. One bad move here and he would have been a dead man.
As I read this memoir, I began to feel that Charlie had a deep soft spot that prevented him from becoming the complete criminal. He seemed to have a mentally "drawn line" that caused him to have concern for some of his activity. In fact, he mentions that he personally paid the interest for some of his loan sharking customers who couldn't make the payments. This is reminiscent of the Sylvester Stallone's Rocky character who was also a collector of loans who had compassion for his particularly weak customers. In addition, when Charlie was asked to commit the ultimate crime... murder... his unconscious sense of morals guided him to make a break from this life. It is at this point that ultimate courage came into play. Not only did he have to summon the power to quit, he also had to "blow the whistle" on many of his "wise guy" friends to the FBI in order to achieve complete absolution. In making this choice, he underestimated how deep he had to go to protect both his sanity and his loved ones as he traversed this ordeal. Charlie also suffered the embarrassment of having to reveal his criminal life in a legal setting without knowing whether this voluntary confession would land him in jail for a good part of his remaining life. This is a must read for anyone from Baltimore as well as anyone who wants to understand the complex criminal enterprise from a realistic non-Hollywood standpoint.
Wised up.......2005-03-15
Wised Up by Charlie Wilhelm is a very interesting book of a life I can not imagine. Charlie has a window of opportunity to be a positive influence for others especially children or teens in their formative years. Wised Up is written in a way that makes you feel you are there and experiencing everything Charlie is. Charlie showed great courage in going to the FBI and not asking for witness protectection. How many would have the courage to do that and return to Baltimore to live? Charlie has experienced a life most of us can only read about and not even imagine in our greatest imagination. When a man changes his life so completely, how can anyone say it is just another gangster story? If I could give this book a 10 star rating, I would.
Charlie, will there be a sequel or a movie?
Wised Up by Charlie Wilhelm.......2005-03-15
Charlie Wilhelm should be admired for his courage and strength when became an informant for the FBI. It takes a strong man to turn away from wealth plus jeopardize the lives of his family and himself to do the right thing. It took a lot of courage for Charlie and Gina to return to the Baltimore area to live. This is NOT just another mob story. Any person who would believe that "Wised Up" is just another mob story, should read the article in the Huntsville Times, dated March 12, 2005. Not only should Charlie be admired and looked up to but so should the rest of his family who stood by him. This book is funny, sad and almost unbelievable at times although I know it is all true. I very much enjoyed reading it and will read it many times again. I highly recommend "Wised Up" as a must read book.
Awesome.......2005-03-11
Being a very visual person, as I read the book, I could actually see what Charlie Wilhelm was describing at any given event. In fact I felt at times I was actually there watching events unfold. Charlie has such a way with words that he had me laughing so hard at some of the events he described. He make me cry at times and he actually got me upset when describing how the government snafu'ed getting him and his famil new ID's so that he could get a job to support his family while hiding out, all the while cooperating with the FBI. The way the book was written,I was not able to put it down once I started reading it. I took a couple of breaks go give my eyes a rest but had to pick it up and read the book until the last page. After reading the book completly, I felt a numbness that I could not shake, knowing that this is a true story, and how the events unraveled and how Charlie how his family have survived all the odds against them.
I have sent this book to friends and would recomend to to all.
If Charlie Wilhelm writes another book, I will be the first to purchase it.
Sincerely
Marilyn Goga

If you are a mother and many of your conversations with your teenage daughter begin with a rolling of eyes, move into shrieked insults, and end with a door slam, I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You! could save you both. As Roni Cohen-Sandler and Michelle Silver illustrate, even if you often seem to be living on two different planets, conflict does not have to define your relationship.
Cohen-Sandler, a clinical psychologist specializing in issues of women and adolescent girls, and Silver, senior editor of Girls' Life magazine, have done mothers a great service with this thoroughly researched book. Their main point is simple: arguments are bound to occur, but if approached correctly, confrontation can actually lead to deeper mutual understanding and a stronger mother-daughter bond. Consistently working through battles also demonstrates a sense of constancy that will offer good lessons for future relationships. Through case studies, exercises, and detailed scenarios, the authors describe the most effective ways to communicate about such loaded topics as dating, sexuality, drugs and alcohol, and peer pressure, paying particular attention to the "classic battle starters": the state of her bedroom, her clothing, and her makeup and jewelry choices. Other in-depth chapters focus on the right and wrong ways to respond to verbal attacks and the importance of choosing battles wisely. Some of their advice will not be easy to follow, especially when the fight is on, but if some effort is exerted, these tips should help mothers and daughters not only survive, but even enjoy, the teen years.
Book Description
Almost without exception, the teen years are tumultuous for both girls and their mothers. Teen girls, who are socialized to stifle their anger and avoid confrontation, frequently take out their frustration on their mothers as the only safe and available targets. The good news is that with patience and the right guidance, mothers can transform the teenage years into positive ones and enrich the mother- daughter relationship. "I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You!" combines the expertise of a clinical psychologist (who has worked with women and adolescent girls for more than twenty years) with that of a senior editor at a leading teen magazine. The book demonstrates how mother-daughter friction during adolescence, managed creatively, empowers girls by teaching them invaluable skills and can even foster intimacy. Discussion of social, emotional, cultural, and psychological issues is interwoven with the voices of mothers and daughters in case studies that are illuminating and reassuring. In the wake of widely popular books exposing the perils adolescent girls face, "I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You!" provides mothers with much-needed practical strategies to help their daughters grow into emotionally healthy and capable adults. At the same time, women will encourage loving and lifelong connections with their daughters.

What a relief!.......2007-03-28
This past summer my husband and I were devastated with our 16 yr old daughter's sudden behavior change. It was horrible. I went on Amazon to try and find some books on parenting teens in today's day and found this one. What a relief! As I was reading the case studies I cried, I swore they were some of my experiences word for word. If anything this book gave me comfort in knowing that I was not crazy and I was not alone. It also gave examples of the appropriate way to respond to different situations(in addition to counseling and a lot of praying). I've since recommended this book to our pastor and two other mothers who had sudden similar experiences. This is a must read for any mother with a teenage daughter!
highly recommended for parents of teen girls.......2006-06-03
I really learned alot from this book & plan on reading it again. It helped me adjust my parenting techniques with my 13 year old daughter and also made me feel better about myself. I have told many people to read this book, it is very well written and really helps a parent with the adolecent girl.
Great advice if your kids perfect already!.......2003-02-19
I wouldn't have bought this book if I wasn't dealing with a VERY defiant, and manipulative teenage daughter--so when this book assumes that I can just say the right thing and everything will be fine, is an absolute joke! This advice would be great if it worked as simply as the book says. But if you already have a tough kid, these tips are NOT going to suddenly make her see the logic in my rules. Kids don't care about the explaination of why it's wrong to dress trashy or wear too much makeup...they want what they want. This book assumes that your kid obeys you in the first place! The title really drew me in--I thought that I had finally found a book that understood what I am going through. But it's just another below-average parenting book with a catchy title!
No, I'm not going crazy!.......2000-12-20
I thought I going was nuts, not knowing how to parent my pre-teen. At last, a book to let me know I was not going crazy by myself, that it is perfectly normal what we are going through, why I as the mom am the target and spring board for her growing up. It also gives ideas on how to rethink parenting, your responses to issues. It shows why "I" the mom am the only one, cuz I'm the closest one to her, that she is 'experimenting with life' off of. I don't feel so alone, I'm okay, and can see why I get the backwash, and the testing. I highly recommend this book to other moms and also dads too, so they can understand the battle while they watch from the sidelines.
best book re teenage girls.......2000-03-08
At a time when I was ready to give up on being a mother till my teen "grew up", this book was a godsend. My feelings of desperation, confusion, loss, and wondering where I went wrong were all validated. I have already started trying techniques recommended. Even if it doesn't change my daughter, my perception has changed so that I'm better able to cope. Very readable (not a bunch of jargon) I'd recommend it to any mother of a teenage girl. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because there were no illustrations. Of course, as an adult I don't have to have them, but I like them. Sometimes a well-placed cartoon helps to illustrate a point. It may be the authors thought illustrations are inappropriate for their book.

This was a gift to my mother, Roy Rogers' best fan. She likes it very much. I also liked it very much. It is a good biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
A gorgeous, highly recommended keepsake.......2005-02-08
Other books have been written about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, the king and queen of B Western movies for over a decade who went on to produce a hit television show for ten years thereafter. None contain the rare family photos paired with personal reminiscences which make Happy Trails: A Pictorial Celebration Of The Life And Times Of Roy Rogers And Dale Evans such a memorable keepsake and winner. Happy Trails is simply packed with private photos from the duo's childhoods, early singing careers, marriage, and family life, alongside more familiar publicity shots from their films and show. A gorgeous, highly recommended keepsake.
illustrated, popular biography of the famous cowboy couple.......2005-01-26
The long marriage and professional relationship of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans throughout the 1940s and '50 is presented in a mostly sunny light, as it was in their popular TV series and movies. Not that there aren't some dark moments: Roy Roger's first wife died; and three of the couple's nine children died. But while the sorrows of such moments are not overlooked, it is the strength of Roy and Dale which comes shining through, as when dealing with culprits or problems in their films. The popular, largely pictorial biography contains a number of heretofore unpublished family photos. Fans of these stars of early TV and aficionados of popular culture will take to this book. While not undermining or even threatening the fond popular image of the couple, it presents them as not just stars, but ones who had a life outside of the limelight as well.

Book Description
Starting with Stalin's early years, the author reveals the bitter family conflict caused by the suspicion that the boy was the result of an adulterous affair. The suspicion poisoned the lives of his parents and led to the family's breakup, and to severe abuse by Stalin's father that left the ten-year-old boy's arm crippled for the rest of his life. The traumatized boy grew up into a brutal and crafty criminal, becoming an agent-provocateur of the Tsarist secret police, the Okhrana. This account details Stalin's role as an Okhrana agent, and reconstructs his rivalry with Roman Malinovsky, the top Okhrana agent in Lenin's organization.
The book explores why Stalin was not exposed after the collapse of the Tsarist regime. It gives an account of the discoveries in the odl archives of Stalin's Okhrana files after his rise to power. It came to light in 1926 and there were several attempts to use the file to depose and execute Stalin as an Okhrana provocateur. Soviet officials of Polish and Jewish ethnic origin played a part in the story of this file, and Brackman argues that this inspired Stalin's hatred for these two groups, igniting the irrational urge to destroy them that led to his alliance with Hitler and the partitioning of Poland, which started World War II.

Well Researched But Theme Pushed Too Far.......2005-06-21
As the Soviet archives have been opened, researchers have had a rich treasury of new information on many Soviet figures, particularly Lenin, Stalin, and their lieutenants.
Serious Soviet scholars have long known that strong circumstantial evidence existed that Stalin had been a long time informer (and actual agent) for the Tsarist politcal police, the Okhrana. Using new Russian materials, including archives, interviews and unpublished manuscripts, the author seeks to fully explore and explain the consequences of Stalin's Okhrana service and the file left behind documenting it.
Had this information come out during Stalin's reign, it obviously would have been devistating. It would have exposed him as nothing more than an opportunistic fraud that had betrayed his Bolshevik comrades. Some had been imprisoned, exiled, or even killed as a direct result of his treachery.
Indeed, when Lenin discovered that his close associate Roman Malinovsky had been a Tsarist agent, he was humilated and enraged. When Malinovsky returned to the Soviet Union from abroad to try and make amends, he was arrested. After a brief trial, he was shot.
While a number of authors over the years have downplayed the seriousness of Stalin's past as an Okhrana agent, I would disagree. Some scholars have noted the very fine lines of double (and even triple) agents during this period. However, it seems Stalin, like Roman Malinovsky, was more than just an occasional snitch for the police. I believe his past treachery was serious enough that a good number of Soviets, many in the Cheka/NKVD, were killed to prevent the information from becoming public during Stalin's life. There is quite a bit of evidence for this, which, of course, is one of the main themes for this book.
However, while this book is well researched, I think it takes it's themes too far. In short, most of Stalin's murderous ways and high crimes are traced back by the author to the Okhrana file and Stalin's attempts to keep it from becoming public. I think that this is, in the end, far too simplistic an explanation for Stalin's behavior and methods.
I also have a few other problems with the work. One, the author continually tries to apply Freudian psychology to Stalin. Many of Stalin's actions are said to be based on certain psychological factors relating to events in his childhood and other periods of his early life (such as being beaten by his drunkard father). While such speculation is interesting, too much of Stalin's behavior is attributed to these factors with no real evidence -- just the speculation.
I also had some problems trying to find out exactly who some of the author's sources were and how they would have known the information attributed to them. In some cases, I was unaware of the person cited and could find no reference anywhere in the book as to who they were and why we should believe what they had said.
Students of Stalinist history and the Soviet State Security apparatus will find this a valuable work and an enjoyable read despite it's flaws. It is certainly the most detailed work yet on an old mystery from the early days of the Soviet regime.
