I'm pretty sure Marc E. Herman isn't the guy who worked on this book. I think Marc E. Herman is a hydrologist or something like that. The co-author of this book is a guy named Marc Herman. But I think his middle name is Robert and he doesn't know all that much about hydrology.

      Really good book though.

5 out of 5 stars A nice, well organized book.......2000-04-13

Having moved to Reno three months ago, and overwhelmed by the vast expanse of national forests, parks, and monuments just over the border, I am finding this book extremely helpful. If there is an outdoor activity and it can be done in north cali, this book will tell you where to do it. Not only that, it is very well written, gives good critical commentary, and provides other interesting bits of knowledge along the way. It is also nice in referencing additional books that may get more specific in regards to a specific activity. This book should be useful for anyone who wants to explore the area but doesn't know quite where to start, whether looking for a serious, extreme adventure or quiet family weekend.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2000-08-26

I have been living in the Bay area for almost 3 years and have had numerous books, most of which stink in comparison to this one. The vast amount of area that this book covers is great for doing just about anything in or around the Bay Area. I've probably utilized this book for more than 30 different activities (biking, hiking, camping, etc.) and I'd have to say that just about EVERYTHING that I've done was great and went smoothly because of the detail the book provides. The only bad thing I'd have to say is that the layout of the information is a bit confusing, but there are so many good "activities" in it that you get over that part quickly.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Northern California Guides.......1998-10-02

If you like the outdoors and spend time in Northern California like I do, this book is indespensible! I use it to find all kinds of cool things to do when I travel. I used it on my last trip and it guided me on fun things to do in and around San Francisco, up through Napa and Sonoma valley, great hikes in less populated regions further North around Mt. Shasta, down to Yosemite, the greatest park in the world, to Sea Kayaking in Monterey Bay and finally down to fun coastal stuff around Big Sur. Needless to say I'm very psyched that author Andrew Rice is researching a book on outdoor adventures in Southern California!

            Book Description

In 1892, Alexander Berkman, Russian émigré, anarchist, and lover of Emma Goldman, attempted to assassinate industrialist Henry Clay Frick. The act was intended both as retribution for the massacre of workers in the Homestead strike and as an incitement to revolution. Captured and sentenced to serve a prison term of twenty-two years, Berkman struggled to make sense of the shadowy and brutalized world of the prison—one that hardly conformed to revolutionary expectation.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've ever read..........2007-01-11

Everyone should read this book. It was written at the begining of the 19th century, but everything is still important today. I ordered this book for a friend in prison and he loved it, and passed it around to other prisoners. If you know anyone in jail or prison, please send them this book. It was my husband's favorite book before he was killed on a freight train. It's very well written and comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars the best anachist memoir.......2004-12-17

This is one of the best memoirs I have ever read. Berkman, as you probably know, tried to kill Henry Frick in an ill fated (and stupid) solidarity action with a group of strikers. He went to jail for it, and his immature poltics underwent an amazing transistion.

But instead of coming out of jail reformed, he came out with a more complex sense of who he was and what he had to do and returned immediately to his poltical work. Berkman's writing style changes as he changes as a person, starting out ultra doctrinare and ending up a more well rounded and likeable human being. Highly recommened, even if you aren't interested in the politics.

5 out of 5 stars "Inhumanity is the keynote of stupidity in power" (p. 299).......2003-12-11

The book is the account of the anarchist Alexander's Berkman's experiences in prison after his botched attempt to assassinate the industrialist Henry Clay Frick, the monster who "legally" slaughtered workers during the Homestead strike of 1892. Although Berkman never abandons his anarchist principles, he does soften his moral repugnance for criminals whose crimes were not motivated by political or humanitarian aims. If anything his friendships with prisoners deepen his anarchist insights about how exploitation and poverty are the principal causes of criminal behavior. Like his lover Emma Goldman, he spends his prison years advocating for the needs of his fellow inmates, often being punished for his advocacy. Berkman details the brutality, graft and corruption of the prison establishment.

Anticipating Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, Berkman shows that those who view their punishment as a part of a larger purpose are best equipped to survive the inhuman treatment and conditions of prison life. The book is not all seriousness, however. It often has lighter moments, as when Berkman describes the quixotic attempt by his friends to tunnel into the prison to free him. Berkman's sub rosa argument, made to Goldman, that Leon Czologosz's assassination of President McKinley lacked redeeming social value, unlike his (Berkman's) attempt to assassinate Frick, while though interesting fails to be convincing. Those interested in the relationship of these remarkable people (Goldman and Berkman) will especially want to read that section.

The book is worth reading not merely for its historical value but for its literary qualities as well. It is intelligently written and difficult to put down. Although it is 518 pages, I read it all in three days. It is just that riveting.

            5 out of 5 stars Beyond Terrorism.......2001-10-04

In 1892, Alexander Berkman burst into the office of Henry Frick, an overseer at Carnegie's steelworks, and attempted to gun him down to foment a revolutionary uprising. Frick survived. Berkman went to jail. Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist is Berkman's account, not only of the revolutionary ardor which drove him to assault Frick, but also of the horrors of incarceration and the transformation of his own thinking while behind bars.

We get plenty of revolutionary and anarchist theory from Berkman. He opens a door into the thoughts and feelings of people struggling for economic and social justice 100 years ago. More than that, he opens a door into the mindset of a fanatic, one which may help us understand the motivations of those who flew their planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 9/11/2001:

"Could anything be nobler than to die for a grand, a sublime Cause? Why, the very life of a true revolutionist has no other purpose, no significance whatever, save to sacrifice it on the altar of the beloved People." (p. 12)

"My own individuality is entirely in the background; aye, I am not conscious of any personality in matters pertaining to the Cause. I am simply a revolutionist; a terrorist by conviction, an instrument for furthering the cause of humanity." (p. 13)

"True, the Cause often calls upon the revolutionist to commit an unpleasant act; but it is the test of a true revolutionist-nay, more, his pride-to sacrifice all merely human feeling at the call of the People's Cause." (p. 12)

Berkman, the purist, disdains his fellow prisoners. He sees himself as better than they are, a Servant of Humanity, not a petty criminal, a predator on the poor. But, life in prison, although it does not shake his revolutionary and anarchist convictions, does bring him down from his ivory tower. Berkman begins to see that:

"The individual, in certain cases, is of more direct and immediate consequence than humanity. What is the latter but the aggregate of individual existences-and shall these, the best of them, forever be sacrificed for the metaphysical collectivity?" (p. 403)

His revolutionary understanding also shifts. He begins to differentiate between the autocratic despotism of Europe and the despotism of republican institutions:

"The despotism of republican institutions is far deeper, more insidious, because it rests on the popular delusion of self-government and independence. That is the subtle source of democratic tyranny, and, as such, it cannot be reached with a bullet. In modern capitalism, exploitation rather than oppression is the real enemy of the people ... the battle is to be waged in the economic rather than the political field." (p. 424)

This is not, however, a political manifesto (for that, one can read Berkman's ABCs of Anarchism). Berkman reveals his inner processes during fourteen years of incarceration. We discover, not only the horrors and corruption of the prison system, but also wander intimately through Berkman's mind. We visit his childhood, soften at unexpected gentlenesses behind bars, and begin to appreciate something as simple as the sunrise.

Although Berkman did not write the memoir until after he left prison, it has a sense of surreal immediacy. He wrote in the present tense, but that alone does not account for the way his text grips, and drags the reader into the maelstrom of his experience. We run with him through childhood memories, daily brutality, fantasies of escape and suicide, and the ideals that keep him sane. His longing for Emma Goldman shines through the text. He enthrones her almost as the guardian of his sanity through the years. Little can compare with the poignancy of his fantasy of mailing himself to his beloved Emma, escaping prison and finding himself with her again. (p. 135-137)

Five stars. Absolutely brilliant work, as relevant today as it was nearly 100 years ago. In her autobiography, Living my Life, Emma Goldman recounted how Berkman saved his sanity and his life by writing this memoir. The deep introspection, the flights of fancy, the accounting of prison life-all deeply illumine the best and the worst of human nature. This book is required reading for anybody who wishes to understand the fanatical, terrorist mindset, for Berkman describes that aptly. Far more importantly, he shares the experience of survival and transformation. He, who entered prison a fanatic, left those iron gates more committed than ever to his cause, but no longer a fanatic. His story tells of graduating from terrorist to humanist, from monomaniacal fanatic to a deeply committed human being. If you read nothing else this year, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist.......2001-02-15

"Is there anything higher in life than to be a true revolutionist...?" - From Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist

This is an incredibly moving and detailed account of an activist's experiences in early industrial America. As an Anarchist, Alexander Berkman recounts his observations of the era's struggle for decent living standards and fair treatment from fat cat industrialists. In prison for attempted assasination of a steel magnate who was responsible for firing and killing striking steel workers, Berkman eloquently describes his reasons for acting on behalf of the working poor and exploited. His experiences in prison are gut wrenching and very human. Not much fluffy language - very straighforward observations, which are emotionally piercing in their social significance and human truth. An exceptional read for anyone interested in the American history that is usually left out of school text books. Berkman's experiences are painful but very motivating and inspiring as they illustrate human love, the will to survive and continue to work for an ideal under the most horrendous conditions. This book is an extraordinary powerful testament to human goodness and strength.

                              Book Description

Personal true stories written by men & women who have lost an animal companion. How the companion came into their life, touched their heart, enriched their life, and then departed. Each story is accompanied by a beautiful drawing (50 drawings). Includes heroic dogs dying in war and in police work, and a chapter by Veterinarians on pain control, hospice programs and theories, and euthanasia - when, how, where, when not to - and more.

Each warm and inspiring story provides comfort to those grieving over the loss of a beloved animal companion. To reassure them that others grieve deeply also and that grieving is a natural process following the loss of an animal companion.

Veterinarians share stories, thoughts, and medical guidelines so everyday people can see how they feel about and treat terminally ill animals, control pain, and perform euthanasia. Allowing an animal companion to die gracefully can offer comfort to the owner. Hotline support numbers provided.

Hospice care for pets, a new program, is outlined in detail and is a bridge to a more gentle and dignified death at home in the care of loved ones.

Encourages recognition of service animals such as Police Dogs and the War Dogs of Vietnam.

Veterinary Clinics are making this book available as solace to those whose ill or injured pets must be euthanized. The book's tender and caring story of animals and their special closeness to a family touches the heart and offers comfort to grieving families.

                                Book Description

Extraordinary Annie accepted who she was and the abuse she'd suffered as a pup and never lashed out in anger or fear. She never objected to the veterinary procedures or tried to bite anyone caring for her. More than once I returned to the clinic to pick her up, only to find she was making rounds with a vet. I was so blessed to see the detachment in her brown eyes fade into adoration when she looked at me. She and I both ended up rescuing something in each other.

Seizures, paralysis, and loss of abilities. . . A canine partner is so much more than a "service dog." Patiently and lovingly facing the battle side by side with you each day, they are heroes, every one. They've been trained to ignore distractions and to be calm, even when they want to mix it up with their canine colleagues. Then there is faithful Ehreth, who pulls Tim Daynes' wheelchair up hills at the University where Daynes is a grad student in social work.

Heartwarming stories share how precious companions came into their life, touched their heart, and then departed. Each story is accompanied by a beautiful drawing of the animal.

Grieving for one's animal companion is as real as for a human loved one. Grief counselors talk about what to expect, what is normal, how long it may take, what to do and where to go for help.

Veterinarians share stories, thoughts, and medical guidelines. Allowing an animal companion to die with dignity can offer comfort to all. Hotline support numbers are provided.

On Angels Wings I and On Angels Wings II are both excellent books for Veterinary Clinics to make available to those whose pets must be euthanized. The tender and caring stories offer comfort. The guidance on grieving will help the person understand his feelings. Suggestions on how to cope will make the experience more bearable.

EZ's writing is exquisite, entertaining, an easy to understand. I love how you are actually thinking about what you are doing when working with her, not just following a laid out pattern. My knitting and the way I look at it is on another level after reading this book and putting it's suggestions into practice.

Well, what can you say about Elizabeth Zimmerman? After learning to knit from a friend and then struggling to decode complicated steps with the help of instruction books and the internet, I finally discovered Ms. Zimmerman's no-nonsense and quite experienced advice. And am I ever glad. She takes undecipherable knitting steps and says "Nonsense" and goes about simplifying everything. My husband kindly bought her "Knitting Workshop" DVDs for me, and I watch them over and over and learn to love this new craft even more. I am SO glad I discovered Elizabeth Zimmerman.

This book was my source for learning to knit; the European method it uses is excellent for knitting quickly. The first garment I made, a tomten, was a simple and cute hooded jacket for my baby daughter. Zimmermann is a great teacher and her quirky writing technique makes for fun reading.

This book was mentioned in another knitting book that I checked out of the library as being a book of encouragement. Truly it was. I also found it at the library and thought it so good and inspiring that I bought it here. Mrs. Zimmerman is witty and encouraging and empowers you to knit what you see and want without worrying about goofing. She has given me the courage to change patterns around--successfully I might add! This book is a gem.

As you can deduce inmediately, english is not my mother tongue. EZ's "Knitting without tears" is THE knitting book for beginners or for experts. I've been knitting for more than 30 years and I learned many tips and hints from Elizabeth Zimmermann's "Knitting without tears". Something really important about this book is that we can enjoy knitting with no stress, we can be creative with no fear, and most of all, from the basics to the most elaborated you can face yarn and needles with confidence because everything is in those pages: how to start, how to solve problems, how to knit for YOU (every body is different), how to finish as a pro...
If I ever have to chose only one book to teach or to learn knitting, "Knitting without tears" is, by far, THE ONE (even for someone that doesn't speak english like me!)

The Secrets to Finding, Nurturing–or Being–an Irresistible Man.

Never before has the search for real connection between the sexes been more important–or more confusing. Single women want to know what they should ask for–not settle for–in a mate, while married women wonder how they can nurture godly character traits in their husbands. Men, both single and married, wonder what women really want. Both genders are long on questions and short on answers.

Where Can Men and Women Go for Help?

In Proverbs 31, Scripture presents a powerful composite of a virtuous woman. But what about the virtuous man–what does the Bible say about him? Popular Bible teacher Michelle McKinney Hammond tackles this timely and important question, digging into Scripture to study key men–from Adam to Christ himself, the ultimate bridegroom–to learn what God requires of husbands and men, and to lay out a trustworthy model of how men and women can live in healthy, fulfilling relationship.

Find out what you can do to identify, nurture–or become–a truly godly man and mate in In Search of the Proverbs 31 Man.

“This is not a man bashing book, but one that champions the original design for their lives. Women need real men.” –Michelle McKinney Hammond

Reading this book has given me a new understanding of active listening to what men say, verbally, nonverbally and spiritually. I have had many "light-bulb" moments as a result, and will probably read it again and again for reinforcement. I recommend it for both men and women, as both sexes are skillfully instructed on how to achieve what we want by first examining ourselves, understanding our roles, and recognizing our true priorities.

I wish I had known then what I know now.....

"No man skips the process of transformation except by his own choosing. All must first be broken before becoming a worthy vessel that can please God and gain honor in the eyes of a woman." Michelle McKinney Hammond

This book is truly off the hook and has helped me severely in becoming the apple of God's eye, not to mention hindering my sabotagemental attempts in jacking my chances of an everlasting and anointed love affair.

Hammond lays the cards out on the table and they are stacked in favor of any Christian man or woman in search of their P31 counterparts. The author spells out in detail what a man, whether he eats meat or quiche, is like in living color.

At first I thought that I could not measure up to this supergodly guy, but as I read on, I had realized that I possessed the requirements all along; a deep love for Jesus, a desire to be loved and to love, and a healthy prayer connection to the Heavens.

This may seem like I am boasting but I am not. This book has simply opened my eyes to the qualities deep within my bosom, of which God has planted... (hint), while re-adjusting my rudder and exposing the tremendous love the Lord has for me AND for YOU!!

You'd think this would be a book that would try to rattle the cages of men and say "shape up or ship out gentleman!!" NO, she doesn't. She is wonderfully fair and constantly reminds women that men are human as well. On the other hand she clearly states that men must have a purpose here on earth before they can meet the chosen vessel God has planned for them.

                                  A must read for ALL...

In Search of the Proverbs 31 Man is a wonderful book to have in your library. It contains a wealth of wisdom that can be applied to your life whether you're single or married. Words of wisdom such as: a man should know his purpose before he marries, there are pitfalls to striving to be/become an independent woman, and the powerful influence women have to bring about positive growth in the lives of men. I've already recommended it to women in my Virtuous Woman/Proverbs 31 Woman class and would recommend it to (1) any man struggling to figure out what God intends a good man to be; (2) any woman in her quest to prepare herself for and discover the type of man God wants to place in her life; (3) and any married couple wanting to edify their marriage!!

If you want to prepare yourself for the godly man the Lord will send you (or has sent you) read this book. To be a single woman Michelle has an outstanding view of relationships from a woman of God view. Well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on the life of a unique genius........2004-06-04

This small, well organized, and beautifully illustrated book is an unexpectedly thorough and complete reference on the life of Leonardo da Vinci, from his birth in Italy to his death in France.
Chronologically organized and succinctly written, but without being a mere biography, this book presents a well-researched portrait of one of the greatest geniuses of the Renaissance. Often citing historical sources and quoting entries from the artist's own notebooks, the author presents an insightful account of Leonardo's views, research and achievements in both art and science, as well as many firmly accepted anecdotes and little-known facts about his character and personal life.
For those interested in a deeper treatment of the subject, the choice bibliographic reference titled Further Reading, located at the back of the book, will be of particular value.

I really enjoyed this very good entry-level treatise on L.d.V. In my opinion the emphasis is correctly placed and pictures of great quality (although some are small in size) help the reader grasp the essence of Leonardo's spirit and become familiar with the best-known parts of his work.

This excellent book focuses on Leonardo's drawings in the Royal Library at Windsor. Everyone has seen the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, but Leonardo's greatest achievments are found in his drawings. Vivid HIGH QUALITY color reproductions are accompanied by insightful commentary and historical/biographical information. The book covers the whole breadth of Leonardo's intellectual development. 100 color drawings by history's greatest draftsman, and indeed one of most powerful minds the world has ever seen. As the book says "...[Leonardo's] drawings [are] the pure expression of his genius, boundless and magnificent."

I never imagined that through a "child book" I would learn about this master-genious and moreover to be capable to comprehend the "details" about his art. I really enojoyed reading this book, I learn more about his famous paints and why they are considered pieces of art. I was motivaded to read more over the other great art's men such as Picasso or Michael Angel Buonorrati; I never thought that could be an easy way to understand this genious. I strongly recommend this book and the other series too; you can not only learn but also share with your child and encourage him to develop his talents or just enhance your "general culture" reading this great book. The talent consist in explaing complex ideas using a "simple language" that everybody can understand. There is not reason to became so sophisticated and not be able to "share" what you learn with the rest of the world. When you learn a good joke you want to tell the rest about it; it is meaningless if you just keep it for yourself...

The editor of this book reports that gay sex was decriminalized in Ireland in 1993, and that Ireland quickly went on to become a fairly progressive country in regards to lesbian and gay rights. Indeed, the stories in this collection could be from any western nation, except that these stories have a particular "irish lilt" to them. Humorous, sad, bittersweet, and often poignant, these stories deal with some universal themes in the lives of gay men: sex, coming out, identifying each other, families, friends and lovers. This book keeps alive the skill and art of Irish storytelling, adding queer voices to the mix. I read this collection quickly, and while no story really reaches an incredible literary height, many manage to be enjoyable and illuminating, haunting and evocative.
