1 out of 5 stars Moving to Los Angeles.......2000-02-09

Avoid this book! It is a waste of money. I just moved to LA from the east coast and this book provided very little useful information. For starters, most of the telephone numbers that are provided are either disconnected or wrong. Also, much of the information on setting up utilities is outdated. The grossest errors, however, can be found in the chapter on neighborhoods, where prices are given for different types of apartments and houses. I found all of them to be $200 - $500 a month less than the actual prices of housing out here. I am sure that there must be more accurate moving guides out there somewhere. If not, then go it alone. You will be better off finding the information yourself than trusting this guide!

2 out of 5 stars Too little REAL information.......1999-09-08

Chapter Two of this book is titled, "Choosing a Neighborhood". The chapter goes from page 18 to page 95. While that may sound like a lot of information, much of it is not as useful as you would think, and is probably out of date since this book was published in 1996. Not all the neighborhoods are listed, and those that are, are clumped together, for instance, "Hollywood, Hollywood Hills and West Hollywood." If you've ever been to LA, you'll know that this covers quite a bit of territory and these areas are related only by their geographical location. The feel of the different neighborhoods is quite different. The author doesn't go into enough detail about the neighborhoods to allow you to make a well-informed decision of where you want to look for a residence. Then, as if to take up space in order to justify charging a higher price for a 220 page book, the author lists where to eat in each neighborhood, and where you can find the police station, libraries, hospitals, landmarks, etc. This is info that is listed in the yellow pages. You'll find that info out when you move. Give us pages filled with information that will really help us choose a neighborhood. Write something helpful like, "If you live in the upper part of the Hollywood Hills, it will probably take you half an hour to get to work if you work in Century City, and 45 minutes to downtown LA." Something useful. Also, since this book was published in 1996, many of the places to eat and grocery stores may not even be there any more. Or there may be better places built since then. Leave that space-wasting info out of the book. If I had been able to review this book in a bookstore before I bought it, I wouldn't have bought it.

5 out of 5 stars This book gets you in the right place at the right time........1999-03-10

I travel for a living and absolutely need guides to help me navigate. This book is not only the best I've found but the most affordable too. A must for anyone visiting Los Angeles.

    Book Description

:"Conversations here means the minds of the interviewed and interviewer meet on equal terms in language that is transparently clear, informed, witty and entertaining."--Stephen Spender. Philosopher and leading proponent of liberal thinking, it's essential to understand Berlin, especially to appreciate his impact on intellectual and political views of the last 50 years.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Spotty and repetitive, yet.........2005-09-08

This book is not for the connoisseur of Berlin's ideas and works; rather it is really a broad and introductory survey. The book is based on a series of largely unstructured conversations with Berlin about his personal past and better known works, as well as some of his views on others' famous works and ideas on philosophy. The interviewer, Ramin Jahanbegloo, cannot be faulted for his brief and often open-ended questions as he is clearly prodding Berlin to speak his mind. Berlin does seem to 'correct' the errors of his interviewer but this is to be expected from such a reknowned and learned philosopher. For those already familiar with Berlin, the responses are far from shocking: Hobbes and Machiavelli are, in fact, ethical thinkers; do be weary of those who propose rational, 100% 'final solutions'; 'total liberty can be dreadful, total equality can be equally frightful'; philosophy, if properly taught, allows one to see through 'bad arguments, deceptions, fumisme, verbal fog..'; etc. That said, it is a lighter read than any one of Berlin's books and, for anyone who is curious about Berlin's views on things, it just might a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Isaiah Berlin is always interesting .......2004-11-16

Isaiah Berlin is one of the great intellectual figures of the twentieth century. He has been spoken of as the second greatest talker in the history of the English language( after Samuel Johnson) Here his remarks are a trifle short and yet there is enough substance in them to fill 'forty books' of others.
    Some samples.
"For me a great man in public life, is one who deliberately causes something important to happen, the probability of which seemed low before he took up the task. A great man is a man who gives history a turn without which it scarcely could have taken without him."
"The purpose of Zionism is normalization; the creation of conditions in which the Jews could live as a nation, like the others. Alexander Kojeve whom I spoke of before once said to me." The Jews have the most interesting history of any people. Yet now they want to be what? Albania? How can they?" I said "For the Jews to be like Albania constitutesprogress. 600,000 Jews in Romania were victims- before the Nazis. They tried to escape. But 600,000 Jews in Palestine did not leave because Rommel was at their door. That is the difference. They considered Palestine to be their own country, and if they had to die they would die not like trapped animals but for the country."
" I believe there is nothing more destructive of human lives than fanatical conviction about the perfect life, allied to political or military power. Our century affords terrible evidence of this truth.I believe in working for a minimally decent society. If we can go beyond this to a wider life, so much the better. But even a minimum of decency is more than we have in some countries."
"But not every genius is like one's image of a genius.Pasternak was such a one. He talked marvellously, he was a little unhinged at times, but at all times a man of pure genius. Nobody could have had a more fascinating experience than to listen to him talk- in my exprience only Virginia Woolf talked something like that. She too, of course, was a trifle crazy"

3 out of 5 stars Not Much Here!.......2004-05-13

I am a huge fan of Berlin's writings. There have been several posthumous releases and I've enjoyed every one. Unfortunately, I enjoyed this one half as much as some others.

The problem, in a nutshell, is that if you are at all familiar with Berlin, then not much of this info will come as anything new. He discusses his view of pluralism, his admiration for Herder and Vico, his zionism, and several other well known areas of Berlin's thoughts.

The interviewer, in particular, did not ask very illuminating questions and as such, Berlin gives less than illuminating answers. At times (just my perception) it seemed like Berlin himself was less than pleased with a few of the questions. One important one that was not but should have been asked (as it is much on any Berlin-admirer's mind)is how he can reconcile pluralism (the belief that values irreducibly conflict both personally and interpersonally) and relativism (the view that ethical truths and ideals may simply be relative). While pluralism and relativism were talked of, there was not a single word about this question (that more than a few Berlin scholars have troubled over).

I gave the book three stars because it is just too hard to give Berlin any less. To be sure, I did like the book and the interview style makes it very readable and in some senses exciting ("Yeah! I would've asked that one. I wonder what he'll say?") It may suffer from a problem long known to Berlin - his work is too historical for philosophers and too philosophical for historians. For me, it was just right. It may be for you too. If you are fairly new to Berlin this is a good place to start. If you are a veteran (or moderately so) you won't find much new or illuminating here.

    5 out of 5 stars Wrong Title.......2003-10-24

Just for information, the title as listed is wrong. The title is simply CONVERSATIONS WITH ISAIAH BERLIN. (You do correctly list the hardback title.) The "Phoenix" you've placed in the title is, in fact, the publisher: Phoenix Press in London.

5 out of 5 stars the art of conversation.......2000-12-07

Isaiah Berlin was not only a skillful writer covering fascinating topics of the History of Ideas. He was also best at enganging in a stimulating and (given his vast knowledge) educating intellectual conversation. Mr. Jahanbegloo's book is one of the few proofs of this less known aspect of Berlin. Having been out of print for a long while, the paperback edition is out there now, finally. Read how Berlin vividly describes his youth and student years, how he got into the History of Ideas, how Oxford was like after the War, what he thinks of Hannah Arendt, communism and nationalism, etc. If not Berlin's best known books, certainly his most entertaining. This poses a serious problem: you will devour it in a day and wish there was a sequel...

5 out of 5 stars Someone you probably never heard of before..........2004-04-21

All history buffs have heard of Meyer Lansky, Al Capone, and Bugsy Siegel, but few have heard of Paul Volpe, the boss of the Toronto Mafia from the early-1960's up to his death in 1983. I picked up this book, intrigued by the fact that it was someone different and, especially, someone from another country. The book detailed the Canadian mob while weaving in the biography of Volpe - his bootlegging days as a young man, to his initiation into the Mob, his stints in jail, and then the details of his death. If you are a history buff who enjoys reading about the Mafia and are interested in learning more about Mafia bosses from other countries, then this is definitely a book you'll want to check out. The only problem is that it's rare and you might have a difficult time finding copies.

    5 out of 5 stars Really good.......2000-06-06

I have always been interested in the mob and, when I saw this book, I had to read it. Unfortunately, it was out of print, so I had to do a special order to get it and I got it. It was very good and Paul Volpe was a very interesting gangster to read about. It kinda sucks how his life ended the way it did; but, other than that, it was one of the most interesting biographies that I ever read.

        Book Description

Many animal species live and breed in colonies. Although biologists have documented numerous costs and benefits of group living, such as increased competition for limited resources and more pairs of eyes to watch for predators, they often still do not agree on why coloniality evolved in the first place.

Drawing on their twelve-year study of a population of cliff swallows in Nebraska, the Browns investigate twenty-six social and ecological costs and benefits of coloniality, many never before addressed in a systematic way for any species. They explore how these costs and benefits are reflected in reproductive success and survivorship, and speculate on the evolution of cliff swallow coloniality.

This work, the most comprehensive and detailed study of vertebrate coloniality to date, will be of interest to all who study social animals, including behavioral ecologists, population biologists, ornithologists, and parasitologists. Its focus on the evolution of coloniality will also appeal to evolutionary biologists and to psychologists studying decision making in animals.

I just began quilting several months ago. I purchased this book along with several others. This book is so complete and so very helpful to one who starts from knowing nothing about quilting. It answers all your questions and gives you ideas about patterns and fabrics. The illustrations are great, the instructions are easy to follow. It has a great section on trouble shooting. It is worth every cent I paid for it. If you have to buy one book about quilting, and you are a beginner or even intermediate quilter, make it this one. I love it!

Imagine this scenario. You pick up your son at school, and ask him how his day went. He says, "You always ask me that. Get a life, Mom." You feel hurt, insulted, frustrated. Silent, you drive him to band practice. In this scene, experts Audrey Ricker and Carolyn Crowder would argue that both of you lose. What is a better response? Tell Billy matter-of-factly that his comment was inappropriate, and that you aren't going to drive him to band practice. When he, suddenly more polite, tells you he has to go to band practice, you tell him he can practice the next day at school. You stand your ground, without arguing with him.

Backtalk--fairly easy to recognize--may be wrecking your family life. As flip or relatively harmless as it may seem, verbal rudeness gets in the way of real communication between parents and kids. It may be holding your children back at school, and ultimately in life. Ricker and Crowder have teamed up to create a four-step program--simple but not easy--to create a backtalk-free home. Through a large number of all-too-familiar-sounding sample "backtalk scenarios" and bullet-point lists, this book explains how to recognize backtalk for what it is, how to choose and enact a response that will make sense to you and your child, and when to disengage from the struggle and move forward. Whether your preschooler is saying "Bad Mommy" or your teenager is saying, "That's lame, Dad," Backtalk suggests ways for you to regain a sense of balance in your relationships with your children.

                Book Description

"So what? All the other kids get to do it!"

Few behavioral problems challenge and frustrate parents, caregivers, and teachers as does verbal rudeness in children of any age. Reinforced by the wise-cracking kids on TV and in the movies, backtalk has become all too common among today's youngsters. But there is nothing cute about this behavior. Remarks like "Yeah, right," "Big deal," and "Make me" -- form children as young as three -- get in the way of real communication between parents and kids, and can also be detrimental to a child's social and intellectual development.

Now two experts in the field share their simple and specific four-step program for ending backtalk and restoring balance in relationships between parents and children, from preschoolers to teens. You'll learn how to recognize backtalk, how to choose and enact a response that will make sense to you and the backtalker, and when to disengage from the struggle and move forward. Full of advice and encouragement as well as suggestions on how to keep track of what works and what doesn't, Backtalk can be put to use immediately, before you hear another "Whatever."

2 out of 5 stars Good advice but suggests selfishness of the parent .......2007-04-24

While some consequences for the backtalk make sense like taking away a priviledge or cancelling a special outing, there are some that seem extremely selfish on the parent's part and can affect more than just your child. According to this author, if your child backtalks right before he is to perform a solo in a school band concert you should discipline him by refusing to take him to the concert. You should call up all the relatives that were going to attend the concert and tell them not to come. As for the entire band and the band director that were counting on that solo as part of the performance, you should tell them that it's not your fault he wasn't there, but your child's for backtalking. In what universe is it acceptable to ruin the entire performance for a band (often consisting of a dozen to a hundred kids) and embarrassing a band director because you were unwilling to think of a less selfish punishment? According to his book, he says you as a parent shouldn't even care how it affects the rest of the world! They just have to deal with it! That seems as immature and rude as the backtalk he says you should eliminate.

                5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-02-17

Tremendous book. Short, sweet and to the point. The case studies (which are just short examples) are helpful in understanding what type of back talk is 'out there' how you should react, what you should say, and what the punishment should be.

It has been a tremendous success in our household!

5 out of 5 stars This the Child Handbook you've been wanting!.......2006-07-28

My book arrived yesterday afternoon, and today at lunchtime it's already having a positive effect. LOVE IT.

My daughter is smart and strong willed, so naturally she tries to assert her control over every interaction. The 4 Step program pointed out where we were failing to curb the disrespect; me, in letting her backtalk too long before enforcing the consequences, my husband in snapping angrily at her instantly, but not disengaging. The authors also do a great job illustrating what is backtalk and what is not. "You call this food?!" is backtalk. "Can I have a hotdog instead?" is not. My daughter wanted to read the book herself, but since she can't read yet, I read her the age-specific pages 65-66. (The principles are the same for all ages, but the kinds of consequences can range depending on the childs development. Sending a 5 year old to her room is different than sending a 15 year old.)

I don't think that being firm in handling disrespect (which is what backtalk is, really) contradicts a progressive, attachment-based parenting philosophy. Would you let a stranger clerk at a store call you a poopy head? You would handle the situation unemotionally, state your displeasure with the interaction, and leave the premises. (I don't like being spoken to in that way. I'll take my business elsewhere.) That's the gist of this program. "I don't like being spoken to in that way; it is disrespectful and unacceptable in this family. You may not go play at your friend's house like you had planned." And then disengage to remove the possibility of argument or negotiation. An attachment-based relationship requires respect from both parties, and it's not just OK, it's necessary for parents to require respect in order to model that to their kids.

                5 out of 5 stars Happy Family.......2006-05-12

I picked this book up and got interested in the examples. This book helps people set limits in relationships. When it is parents and kids, the parents are responsible for setting and enforcing the limits, but it is also very useful for other relationships, for example if an adult has a difficult adult sibling. Their system is based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs. If your home is unpleasant because of people -- any people -- talking or behaving rudely with one another, this book can help.

Frankly, part of the appeal of this book is seeing rude kids get their comeuppance and seeing lazy parents learn to make the home a pleasant place. The system is very simple but requires backbone and resolve on the part of the parent. It will not require being the endless disciplinarian once the kids realize you're serious. Of course, some parents will want to make a punishment out of the method, but watching their results and referring back to the book should help correct that.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Book for the American Parents.......2005-09-08

In a way this book may come a shocker to some parents. It may seem too harsh. Well... You must rip the weeds out with the roots in order to save your beautiful lawn. I can say that this method works! It worked for me (and for my pre-teen children) and it worked for my friends (parents of teenage children).
It's tough to stick to it. You'll panic once in a while and you will doubt yourself. Don't. You're doing the right thing. You, your child and, ultimately, your relationship will benefit from it. Start "weeding out" the backtalk and stick to it.

                    Book Description

Until his death 150 years ago, John Brewster Jr. was one of the most prominent portrait painters in America. Born deaf in 1766, his hauntingly beautiful portraits have a directness and intensity of vision that were rarely equaled. Harlan Lane's groundbreaking biography includes little-known and invaluable information on the early French roots of the American Deaf-World, the first school for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut, the integrated Deaf community of Martha's Vineyard, and Contemporary Deaf art. Superbly illustrated with twenty-four pages of color images, A Deaf Artist in Early America provides a rare glimpse of Brewster and his art; it also contextualizes the distinctive culture, language, social institutions, and legacy of the Deaf in America. "This riveting account of John Brewster Jr. will be invaluable not only in Deaf studies and art history, but also in early American history and the social history of American institutions." -Carol Padden, coauthor of Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture

They were the Sheridan men, ruled by passion, betrayed by love, heirs to a legacy of violence and forbidden desire.  Gus, Boston's top homicide cop: he knew equally well the backroom politics of City Hall and the private passions of the very rich, a man haunted by the wanton courage and perilous obsessions he inherited from his father... Conn, the patriarch, a lawless cop who spawned a circle of vengeance and betrayal that would span half a century... and Chris, Gus's beloved son, a Harvard lawyer and criminologist, fated to risk everything to break the chain of obsession and rage...  Three generations linked by crime and punishment--cops and heroes, fathers, sons, and lovers united at last by revelations that could bring a family to its knees...

I usually like Parker's books, and particularly when he deviates from his Spenser books. So, I really was expecting to enjoy All Our Yesterdays, probably Parker's most significant departure from his 'norm" However, much to my disappointment, I found this book to be have erratic pacing, slow to develop, and not very believable or interesting characters. As such, I wound up skimming through large passages and then, ultimately, giving up on it. There are just too many books and not enough time to waste time reading All Our Yesterdays.

This novel by Robert B. Parker is very different than his Spenser, Jesse Stone, and Sunny Randall novels. Those tend to be shorter, wittier, high-action mysteries, while this one focuses more on characters and relationships. For me, the plot and the characters were interesting enough to keep me reading, and by the second half, I was completely hooked and found myself unable to put the book down. I did find the dialog pretty forced and unnatural at times, and the characters' personalities and histories felt a bit cookie-cutter, but I enjoyed it in spite of these criticisms.

                    4 out of 5 stars Three generations.......2004-01-01

In this melodramatic tale Chris's grandfather was Conn Sheridan who sniped at British troops during the Easter uprising and became an officer in the IRA. Later he went to prison because he was betrayed by a woman and ended up moving to Boston, becoming a police officer. Chris feels frustrated because he has only been to graduate school and feels that he has never done anything.

In Boston Conn marries the daughter of a judge. In 1932 his son Gus is born. When a child, Maureen Burns, is discovered in a church basement, Conn learns that the homicide in the commission of a felony was caused by the son of the woman who betrayed him to the authorities. The perpetrator is sent to Zurich and the matter is officially listed as unsolved.

Conn dies walking into gunfire. His son Gus becomes a police officer. The child of Gus and his wife Peggy, Chris, was sickly and precocious. Moving forward to adulthood, Chris becomes interested in a grandchild of Conn's longstanding love interest. The strands in the story become disentangled when Chris undertakes a job as a special investigative prosecutor.

I love Robert B. Parker's books. He is the only author I buy in hardback because I think the man can write better than anyone in the market today, and I never want to wait for the paperback, or for the new ones to come back at the library. Parker isn't really a one-note author, as his critics claim; he's more of a one-tune author, but if you happen to like the tune, he's always fun. This book is very well-plotted at the action is great, and all three of the main characters are every bit as appealing as Spenser. But please, oh please, pretty please, Mr. Parker, stop buying into the "Playboy" philosophy that men are made more powerful by their uniforms, but women acquire power only when they take their clothes off! And that those women who aren't "picture perfect" aren't worth anything at all! Please? This is the very same attitude that you skewered - and beautifully - in "Taming a Sea Horse," the book about the sleazy smut-peddling Crown Prince Club. Whose side are you on anyway? Other than that major irritation, this book is a very good read, and in my opinion Parker makes the transition from pot-boiler to mainstream well. But....Please??

4 out of 5 stars Better than most Spenser novels, give it a chance.......2001-02-19

OK, here's the deal. Robert B Parker wants to write something different, and he's just cranked out about 6 Spenser novels in a row. So, he sits down and writes this, All Our Yesterdays, a very good thriller, but often trashed novel. Why? Its easy... Robert B Parker is a simpistic writer, often taking for granted that you have read all the earlier novels, and you want no background material and no filler. Well, this isnt a Spenser novel, so background material is needed, you just met these guys. That for one agrivates Spenser fans, they like there novels to start on page one and never drag, but you do need a little background here. Heres the catcher, Robert B Parker also hates background material and explanitory writing. So he writes a vast, sprawling novel existing on three generations, with as little writing as possible. He does it in about 460 pages, (about the lengh of 2 Spenser novels). Does it work? Yes, its a gritty, fun yarn that is fast pased and slightly dark at times. Its also a little sterotypical towards the Irish, but Robert B Parker is Irish, so let that be. Its a welcome change of pace, more filling than most of his Spenser novels. Not a steak dinner filling, but more filling than say a Snickers.

Manes Sperber won the German Book Trade Peace Prize in 1984, the year of his death. His unique capacity to describe living history makes "The Unheeded Warning" a stirring portrayal of life in Vienna in the 20s and in Berlin in the early 30s. He became attached to Alfred Adler's school of Individual Psychology, was for a time quite active in the Hashomer Hatzair (a leftist Zionist pioneering youth movement) and later an energetic Communist Party member in Germany. The book ends with his arrest -and release- in Berlin shortly after the Nazi rise to power, allowing him to see the easiness with which Reds became brownshirts.

4 out of 5 stars first part of manes sperber's autobiography.......2000-03-27

manes sperber's god's water carriers takes the reader to the long-lost world of jewish galicia, and later, ww1 vienna. while sperber doesn't reach the depth of elias canetti, who he has been compared to, his work is very readable, lyrical at times, and deeply interesting.

4 out of 5 stars The dirty laundry of war........1997-02-21

Like a whisper amplified in a courtyard, Natalia Ginzburg's novel of war and love in World War II Italy resonates with understatement, building from a monologue of normalcy to a shout of anguish. "All Our Yesterdays" is the story of two families, neighbors in a small town in Italy whose lives become intertwined by affairs of the heart and mind, politics and sex, and by the ultimate commonality: death. Anna, the youngest daughter of the poorer family, becomes the central figure in this epic, and when she finds herself pregnant by the unthinking neighbor boy she agrees to marry an "uncle" who will provide for her. "Up till that day she had lived like an insect," Ginzburg writes. "An insect that knows nothing beyond the leaf upon which it hangs." Cenzo Rena, Anna's new husband, pledges to show her the world, but instead the world comes to them when German forces occupy their village, and the passive Anna finds herself caught in the unrelenting movement of war.

In Angus Davidson's translation of Ginzburg's spare, luminous prose, life-shattering events avoid melodrama through straightforward rendering. Just as Cenzo Rena finds it impossible to hate the Germans on an individual level once a soldier stumbles into their kitchen, Ginzburg's cry for peace finds its most powerful argument in the mundane details, in deft and sympathetic characterizations of flawed humanity, and through the "insect-like" observations of Anna. The story flows through family connections with the fluidity of gossip, but with none of the condemnation.

During a decade when war disrupts so much of "everyday life" in townships worldwide, it is worthwhile to rediscover a book like "All Our Yesterdays" which lets us in the front doors of ordinary families and leaves us sorting through their dirty laundry with a shock of recognition, with empathy, and with the desire to open our own doors to them.

This sourcebook manages to contain not only a timeline of important events in history your players can screw up beyond recognizable states, but a list of various phenomena that can help them muddle in time, various ships, organizations, and other things. Plot hooks are sprinkled throught in a refreshing manner. Some minor quables about repetition, but mostly a good book
