This is verging on being a catalog........2001-05-02

You would get a hernia trying to carry this around to antique malls. This book weights at least 5 lbs.

It is well laid out with a section on how to use the book. Most of the pictures are black and white with special designated sections called "Colour Review". There is a periods and styles chart. And lots of advertisements with phone numbers. Various disciplines are covered; some are Irish antiques, carousel animals, Poole pottery, majolica, and ceramics, and French provincial furniture.

I actually obtained it for the section on glass. There are several good descriptions and trademark displays. It mostly targets 18th and 19th century glass. I would like it more if this book had described production methods. However it does cover what it promised "Prices"

Good book... but beware of used book price gouging........2002-08-13

I found the book to be very helpful. Instructions, drawings and material lists are all very detailed. I have building experience. A novice may want to supplement with a "how to" book that covers techniques and tools. ("How to Build Small Barns & Outbuildings" by Monte Burch. <$13.95 at Amazon.com> is good) What I find disturbing is the price for the used copies of this book, ranging from $28 to $41. New, the book sells for only $9.95!!! Something's very wrong with this picture. But, for some reason, no new copies are for sale here. I wanted to purchase a new copy for my brother. At these rediculous used prices, I think I'll let him borrow mine.

Nice plans, but little instruction. Could benefit from pictures of more modest dwellings and projects more suited to the regular homeowner.

A good supplement to other, more detailed books, but unless you are an accomplished carpenter, don't make this your only book.

Good book, but not for beginners.......1999-01-19

This is a good book with excellent plans and drawings, but it assumes you have a background in construction. It doesn't include much background info such as basic techniques and tools. It does have plans and material lists for 15 different structures. I consider this to be an excellent book to be used in conjunction with other books. If you want more "how-to" info, go with "Building Backyard Structures" by Levine, Begnal & Thornton.

A bit disappointing.......2002-10-18

I should have known not to order a book that lacks the 'look inside' feature, but Ortho books are usually very good. This book was disappointing (to me, at least) for the following reasons: too basic, not enough information, and it does NOT include photograghs of the finished landscapes. Mostly I just do not like the illustrations--fuzzy chalk drawings that are hard on the eyes and lack definition. Selected ideas for building fences, pergolas, etc. consist of simple line drawings and no detailed instructions. Sorry Ortho, I've seen better.

It's all there for you!.......2001-03-11

Ortho puts all the basic outlines in this book for us to find. How to get stared on drawing out your plans to scale. They explain how to use wind directions in your favor, and use existing landmarks and views to help the design process. With seven different specific property scenarios, your sure to find one similar to yours. I did, (Site Two: Older Home; Midtown Lot) and this book has helped me to draw a basic scetch of what I want my property to become.

I was hoping this book would be a useful resource for developing supplemental activities for an elementary-level (K-5) curriculum on non-violence and conflict resolution. But it is really geared toward parents (as the title indicates), not educators. The activities and required materials are suitable for an interpersonal setting, not really for the average classroom or after school programs. I found that 104 Activities That Build: Self-Esteem, Teamwork, Communication, Anger Management, Self-Discovery, Coping Skills by Alanna Jones, was more useful for my needs/goals.

This is an interesting and useful book. It provides a wide range of activities to use with children to help them learn about themselves and understanding others. Many of the activities offer ways to accommodate for older or younger audiences, and some are specific to ages. The range of topics addressed is rather inclusive, and the activities are designed to appeal to all types of learners (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). The activities offer a creative approach to each topic, and are nice springboards for deeper discussions. I am certain this book will be utilized both in my home and in my classroom!

The Fun Palace, Agnes Bernelle.......2001-01-03

Agnes Bernelle didn't have an easy life, but I think we can safely assume that she was never bored. Some people have the unique quality of remaining young, at heart, untill the day they die because they keep discovering new things, they keep looking with an open mind. I think actess and singer Agnes Bernelle, born Bernauer, was such a person. Her biography the Fun Palace is not a unique story. In some ways it compares with that of Claire Goll: Growing up in a privileged mixed Jewish family, fleeing abroad after the shattering impact of Hitler coming to power, marrying a adventurising womaniser and finally rising to own acclaim. But Agnes Bernelle lacks the viciousness and bitterness of Yvan Goll's widow in her discription of others, she doesn't put herself on a pedestal. She has written a book simply because she had her story to tell.Some of her pain remains understated, you have to read between the lines. The title The Fun Palace is derived from her discription of a 'Scherzenpalast' she visited long ago, a fairground attraction were you enter a house which constantly change, where the rooms shrink and expand, and the floors move. Agnes Bernelle was constant in her political beliefs (pacifist) but remained unhampered by dogma. Her life was too varied for that. The Fun Palace is a good read for anyone who is interested in recent European history, in theatre, in feminism, in life. I wish I'd met her when she was alive.
