Makes you want to reach for a cookbook.......2001-03-05

This book describes 45 tropical herbs and spices. It gives the botanical name of each herb or spice and, usually, four local names.

Typically, there's a page for each herb or spice, featuring a thumbnail close-up and a still life, both in rich, glossy color. And there are three or four paragraphs describing each entry. The result is very engaging.

This book provides a pictoral introduction to tropical herbs and spices. It provides the name in the various cusines in which it is feature e.g. name is Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, Tagalog etc. It provides some information regarding it's cultivation, preparation and use.

A representative list of the items covered is: annatto, asam gelugor, basil, bilimbi, Indian borage, candlenut, cardamon, cassia, Chinese celery, chili, Chinese key, Chinese chives, cloves, sawtooth coriander, coriander, cumin, curry leaf, fennel, fenugreek ....

The book only contains 4 recipes - a chutney, curry powder, a sambal, and a tandoori spice mix. You need to go to regional cookbooks to find recipies to use the herbs and spices shown here.

Nonetheless, it is interesting to see the herbs and spices whole. Perhaps, not essential to the kitchen but it does add fun.

The Last Mafioso..........2007-02-08

Back in 1987, I was lent a Paperback Edition of the book. I read it from cover to cover. It definitely pulls you into the life that Mr. Fratianno led. I bought a used hardcover in 2004 and still read through the book from time to time. I recommend it! Also, it should be made into a movie. Five stars!

West coast mob.......2004-12-08

Jimmy Fratianno was a small time hood who killed on demand and was quick to exploit anyone and everyone to make a quick buck. He lived by his code of honor and according to him, always split up his money with his partners The book details some of the hits Jimmy did to make his bones. His attempts at trying to kill Mickey Cohen are interesting if not funny. With his desperation at trying to buy a Las Vegas casino and his trucking company being prosecuted, Jimmy tries to make himself sound like a victim of mob and government justice. His relationship with Johnny Roselli and Frank Bompensiero don't help him in L.A. or with the Chicago and New York families. When he takes over the L.A. family, one is not sure whether the Dragnas betrayed him or he really never had the o.k. to head the family. After many monetary failures and the murders of the 'Bomp' and Roselli, Jimmy realizes he has been betrayed and that Dominick Brooklier, now the head of the L.A. family, has a contract out on him. He hides in San Francisco for a while, but he soon turns to the government for his salvation. Becoming a rat was tough for him, but at least he was able to get some measure of revenge on his tormentors, rather than a bullet behind each ear as so many of his victims had.

Great Mafia Reading.......2002-08-12

I borrowed this book from a fellow Mafia-phile and enjoyed it so much I searched out a used copy on the Internet and bought it. "The Last Mafioso" is the biography of Jimmy "the Weasel" Fratianno, a West Coast Mafioso who turned government witness, but it tells a vastly greater story. The L.A. and Vegas underworlds spring to life in this enthralling book; anyone with a passing interest in the Mafia will enjoy it.

The Last Mofioso.......2001-05-03

I found the book The Last Mofioso very intorsting, it is one of my favorite books. I enjoy reading about Jimmy Fratianno's role in organized crime. I have read a few other books on the subject but none of them gave the detales that The Last Mofioso did. I would recomend this book to anyone that likes history. It is a very easy book to get involved in, which is good because the book is very long, but the best books are the long ones.The characters and settings are extremly well developed. I read this book because a friend recommended it to me. The book gives detales about the Kennedy's associashion with the mofia and several detales on hits the mob made. It also clears up any hits the mob was blamed for but did not do. What intorests me the most is the codes that the diffrent families had towards each other. For example a mans wife and kids were forbiden, no matter what they did you cant go after them. now a days its almost like fair play. The way Jimmy discribed setting up the unions was also very intoresting to me. This book contains some elements that should not be read by childeren. By the end of the book I had a very diffrent view of the mob, they set up alot of things that we have today. This book was great I give it 5 stars. Their is no way someone could read this book and not get a great deal of information and enjoyment out of reading it.

the last mafioso is jimmy the weasel fratiano.he was one of the highest ranking mafioso to turn against the cosa nostra.this book is a classic among the true mafia books.you could almost feel sorry for him when he is arrested.in this book you also find out what really happened to jimmy hoffa,who where frank sinatras mafia friends,why did a mobster share his mistress with a us presidebt,why was the mob considering to kill desi arnaz,and what was the real cia-mafia plot to kill the communist fidel castro.an in depth look into the old mafia world.one of the best mafia books.period.

Amazing and Terrific.......2007-02-01

Just finished the novel last night. Puzo's story-telling still is first-rated. And the plot is very cohesive, which makes you less inclined to stop in the process.

Before reading it, "The Godfather" and "The Sicilian" are two best novels from Puzo, IMHO. But this novel is also a hit, althouthgh maybe not as good as the above two.

To Roger J. Buffington:
Here in Singapore (just several weeks ago), a husband stabbed his wife (8-month pregnant) to death with a sword, yet he was judged to insanity at that moment and went free.

I was very angry at the the acquitting of the man, so everyman can go out and kill someboday and then bribe a doctor to prove that he is insane at the special moment and can hold no responsibility? How ridiculous!

Singapore is famous for its strict law, yet such thing happens.

Then i don't have any slightest doubt on what Puzo described in the book.

Not the Godfather, however still a very engaging and entertaining read. .......2006-12-09

It is unfair to compare The Last Don with The Godfather because The Godfather was in, and still remains, in a class all by itself in this genre. That being said, The Last Don is still a first-class, engaging and entertaining read.

Don Domenico Clericuzio is a sagely, ruthless man in his dotage who is anxious to see his family go "legit," divesting themselves of all of their unsavory holdings in order to establish themselves in society. Not wanting his progeny to continue committing the sins of the fathers, the Don begins to parcel out his empire. As the deus ex machina of the only remaining crime family, he ensures that the Clericuzio beak will still be wet long after the divestiture.

His vision for a peaceful transition to legitimate society, however, is endagered when a horrifying family secret threatens to set off a civil war between two blood cousins.

Without going into any more details, which would spoil the book's ending and would take away from the engrossing plot structure, The Don has his way in the end and an all-out bloodbath is averted. The Don can goes to the hereafter secure in the knowledge of a "life well lived," and his wishes have been carried out.

Mario Puzo weaves a rich tapestry which, of course, contains the main plot and various sub-plots that accent the main storyline giving it a fuller, more robust feel. The same can be said of the major and minor characters.

What I loved most about this book is the way Puzo ties everything up at the conclusion of the book, leaving no loose ends. There is a tidy ending that is logical, without being cliche'. You'll finish this book having been totally entertained, suprised, and satisfied.

Again...a very engaging, engrossing, and entertaining book. 5+ stars.

The Last Straw: Don't Read It.......2006-06-30

It is a story about a Mafia family named the Clericuzio, in transition from illegitimate to legitimate riches. In the transition, of course, the members of the family have their share of missteps and miscalculations. Some of these miscalculations are human - the love of a woman, blood lust, greed - while other miscalculations are the inevitable product of sin and deception.

Overall, it sucks. The first 25% of the novel is practically text porn, which can be skipped without losing any of the plot. The middle 50% is set-up, but it gives a bad name to "rising action" because of the pointless maneuvers and character development that takes place. The last 25% is pretty good, where the plot advances, twists, turns, etc. I give it 2/5. Don't waste your time if you have anything to read other than Fabio-pulp novels. Because of the low rating, it's not worth reviewing any further. Save this one for those cold winter nights when you run out of kindling.

Only competition is The Godfather..,.......2006-05-31

Probably, I liked this one better than The Godfather, only because no animals were killed in it. This and The Godfather are Puzo's best books. Omerta was terrible...

A slow read.......2006-05-28

This was my first Puzo book. I was expecting an entertaining read. Instead, I found the book to be a confusing chain of family dramas involving numerous un-engaging characters, plodding towards a conclusion that was less than exciting. Paricularly annoying were the in-depth, opinionated (introspective?) analysis of the world of hollywood film making.

Maybe the choppiness and numerous twists and mini-dramas is just the nature of mafia stories. Maybe I am just reading the wrong genre. Because the only real thrill I got was upon completion of this book.

THIS BOOK ALTHOUGH STARTS OUT SLOW DOESA COME AROUND. Gives you full details as if you lived you know like you were there. Gives you an insight on the last mafioso and how the mobs were run. Answers questions about the Kennedy assassanation , C.I.A. moffia plot to kill castro.The guy ricardo on i love lucy tells why there was a hit out on him. Never done though. This book is an 8 for me also gives you pictures . Alot of names though so you have to go back and forth to remember these people

'Portraits of the Nation' offers a fascinating insight into the construction and development of national identity in two multilingual countries - Belgium and Switzerland. This book not only shows that multilingualism was no obstacle for the development of national identity - in both countries it was used as a positive means of collective identification - it also demonstrates that other means of identification were much more important. These were found on a national and supralinguistic level - in Belgium the Royal Family and in Switzerland the Alps - and on a local and sub-linguistic level - in Belgium mainly the provinces and in Switzerland the cantons. This study also shows that, contrary to what might be expected, Belgium was often more successful than Switzerland in constructing and adapting its national identity, especially in the inter-war years. Combining written and iconographic sources found in the archives of the national banks, mints and Post Offices in Berne and Brussels this book furthermore fills in an important historiographical gap using stamps, coins and banknotes as historical sources for the first time. Often neglected by historians, Alexis Schwarzenbach successfully argues that these sources have to be seen as important 'lieux de memoire' and that they are ideally suited for the study of the interrelated topics of memory and identity.

Great tomato handbook and recipes.......2004-05-21

If you are really into tomatoes, this is the book for you. Not only does it tell you in simple language precisely how to grow tomatoes, it tells you about soils, fertilizers, pests, diseases, mulching and composting, staking, container growing and many other hints you will need to grow delicious tomatoes. It is the best book I have ever found on the subject, especially since it is very difficult to get a ripe tomato here in the Rockies where I live. And the recipes are delicious too. I could founder and die happily on the tomato pesto alone.

I have a six-year-old with Autism who is yet to be potty trained. I was beside myself until I purchased this manual. Now, I understand more about his point of view when it comes to learning this new task. I was perplexed by his ability to control his bladder and bowel, but his unwillingness to use the toilet. It never occurred to me that using the bathroom could cause anxiety or that I needed to provide a calm and relaxing atmosphere for him while he was on the toilet.

What I like most about this book is that it gives you not only an overview but solutions and ideas for making a very important milestone in your child's life possible. Any parent of a child with learning disabilities wants their child to be able to assimilate into society as much as possible. This book helps to knock down one more wall standing in the way of social acceptance.

I had been struggling with toilet training my autistic child. This book gave me a better understanding of what autistic children experience when toilet training them. A difficult task made easier!.......2006-07-01

I am so thankful that I chose this book over others that deal with toilet training. I did not realize how teaching someone on the spectrum how to use the potty is very different in many ways, than someone who's not. This book deals with those issues. It brings to light some very important routines and activities to follow. Especially for someone who is new to the world of Autism, this is a book that I highly recommend that you include in your library.

If you ever thought that toilet training was no big deal, try training a child with special needs...a whole different story. This book gives some great tips on how to go about it when the odds are against you. Determining readiness, common problems and solutions and developing a routine, are just some of the topics covered in this book. It is a must have for special ed. teachers as well as parents of individuals with autism and related disorders. Great book!

Very Useful - explains what 's going on from your child's perspective.......2005-10-14

While we successfully opted to use a different training method to train our 4 year-old dughter- this book was very good at making sense out of our daughter's behavior. An autistic child can really be a challange to understand under normal curcumstances- the volume goes waaaaaay up when potty training. We would highly recommend this book to anyone getting ready to take on this very big job. Take what you can from this book and choose the method that feels most likely to work. Be committed. Chin up. You can do it. Good luck.

Excellent bio of telegraph inventor.......2007-10-16

Basically I agree with the reviews of Deborah Taylor, Charles De Fanti, Jr. and Matthew Wall. I had no idea that Morse was an accomplished painter and introduced daguerreotype photography to the USA and taught Matthew Brady. Thanks to Hollywood, I had no idea that one of the best features of the Morse telegraph system was automatic recording of the dot and dash signals, so no operator had to be present when they arrived. Or that he was involved with the trans-Atlantic cables. Or that he finally threw himself on the mercy of European governments in which the Morse telegraph system was being used and asked for an indemnity, one-time, saying he would be satisfied with whatever it was ($2 million in today's money).

We were never exposed to Morse's pro-slavery bible-based views, or his campaign support for General George McClellan in 1864 against Lincoln. The idea that English abolitionists were planted or encouraged to go to the USA to weaken us was there.

Silverman has provided a good index and astounding documentation of sources. Those of you who have looked at my other reviews and seen lists of errors will be impressed that I did not find a single one in this wonderfully readable book. My only wish is that there were a few more details of the telegraph devices. And why no table of the Morse code? No matter: this is one of the best books I have ever read on any topic.

More relevant for the inventor today than you can imagine .......2005-07-12

I picked up this book on a whim, and found myself agog at Morse's veritable precognition about the telecommunication industry. I was quite unable to put the book down. This man may be long dead, but his ideas about leasing the right to use his telegraph, rather than opting to sell telegraph devices one-by-one, was a brilliant marketing decision on a par with today's great master's of business. The book is well-written and full of surprises, including what business decisions NOT to make. This is a great read for anyone who a)is in marketing; b) is in telecommunication; or c)mistrusts the Patent Office!

SFB Morse is hardly a forgotten figure in history, but neither does he have the stature of an Edison in terms of the industrial development. As Lightning Man ably describes, the telegraph itself was more an invention of an amalgamation of a variety of predecessor developments in science and technology. Morse deserves ample credit for putting the pieces together and, more importantly, having the drive and acumen to evolve the invention into a successful business model, which was the key for its transformative effect on world technology. Yet his life, before the appearance of this excellent biography, seems shrouded in the myth of the lone inventor.

What's truly fascinating about his story and this book is the tale of the transition from the idea of the lone individual genius to the research lab, the difference between a great idea and a useful product, the move from progress being measured by the fevered work of a single man to the joint efforts of the company and the corporation. The story is one of a transformation of a culture, but which stays firmly focussed on its subject, Mr. Morse, in telling the tale.

Morse's "early" years as a painter are covered extremely well, and while the transition between his career as a painter to one as an inventor may seem bizarre and abrupt to the modern conception, Silverman illuminates this strange career change in the light of the times. Morse himself was a bridge between early American puritanism and a more modern philosophy that was to come. His philosophy of human nature and of himself had all the prejudice, bravado, arrogance, hypocrisy, idealism, greed, and Calvinist self-loathing that made the first half of the 19th century such a dynamic period. That Morse had to travel abroad to study fine art painting, a field considered by many Americans of the time to be vile and barely a craft, and sought the approval of the Academy of the day in Europe also neatly encapsulates the love-hate relationship of the period with European culture and learning. (Morse's own tortured schizophrenia on European political institutions is a subtheme: he is quick to criticize the European political systems of the day in his younger years, and all too eager to accept the emoluments and honors of royalty in his later ones.) The treatment of Morse's early years and his relationship with his then-even-more famous geographer father is done very deftly, without resorting to facile Freudian psychobabble, as we see Morse attempting to simultaneously win parental approval, find his own way in the world, make a name for himself, and try to see his own importance.

There's an American tragedy within Morse's life story as well, in the way he bitterly fought -- perhaps too hard in some ways -- to get the sole credit for inventing the telegraph that he is popularly (and inaccurately) given in the one-line biographical entries of modern histories. This fight was done partly for ego and celebrity, and partly to protect his patents and late fortune. It's a sad and cautionary tale how Morse was never able to settle into any kind of self-satisfaction as he became obsessed with his own legacy.

Morse was an American original, and there's a fascinating pull to the story of a man never happy with himself despite having reached conventional success in two quite different professions.

As he did with Houdini, Poe and Cotton Mather, Silverman peels away the tired skin of his subjects and reveals a person hitherto unknown to history. Never one to catalog facts, Silverman redefines not only the person but the era in which he lived. Morse's Calvinism, his passionate pro-slavery views, and his profound frustrations can be comprehended only in the context of his age, which Silverman portrays through dazzling research and exquisite prose. Harrowing Nineteenth Century sea voyages and the Puritan's love/hate relationship with Rome provide two of the many fascinating vignettes that invigorate this portrait.
Once again, Kenneth Silverman has proven himself the Dean of American biographers.

Wellington-Another Life.......2005-10-08

Gordon Corrigan's "Wellington-A Military Life" tries hard to find a new niche in the substantial literature about the First Duke of Wellington. "Wellington" is not a standard biography in that Corrigan doesn't spend a lot of pages on Wellington's life away from the military. Nor is it a battle history of Wellington's campaigns, although these are sketched at varying levels of detail in the course of the narrative. Nor is it an operational or strategic level history of the Napoleonic Wars in the manner of Oman or Chandler.

Corrigan's approach is to depict Wellington as a military officer in the context of the British Army and of the wars of his time. It seems clear from the narrative and the footnotes that the author is very familiar with the British Army of Wellington's time and of our own. The focus is on Wellington's development as a officer through his experiences in Ireland, Flanders, India, the Peninsula, and the final Campaign of the Hundred Days. Corrigan provides much contextual discussion on the ways in which the British military establishment did its business in that day and age. Corrigan's prose is solid, straightforward, and unvarnished. His narrative is interesting and seems to cover all the major points in an already well-plowed field.

It seems clear that Corrigan admires Wellington as a military leader, and the narrative makes the case that Wellington was an exceptionally professional and succcessful military officer, even by the battle-hardened standards of his time. The intent to package Wellington's long military career into a single volume of moderate length means many details must be glossed over and some controversies bypassed, but the author does provide some interesting items for consideration. For example, he asserts that there is no definitive proof that Wellington was ever unfaithful to his wife. This statement is possibly correct in the narrowest sense, although it flies in the face of both a wealth of anecdotes and the judgment of other historians. For another example, Corrigan dismisses much of the academic controversy over the respective generalships of Wellington and Napoleon at Waterloo, by noting that each was ultimately responsible for the conduct of the army each led. Wellington fought a hands-on battle on ground of his own choosing in coordination with his Prussian counterpart; Napoleon gambled much and delegated much, and paid the price.

Corrigan offers short but effective bio's of some of the officers with whom Wellington served. His discussion of Sir John Moore, for example, is more nuanced than the usual hagiographic comments; Corrigan brings out Moore's challenges with higher authority, although he does not give full credit for the beneficial strategic results of Moore's aborted campaign in Spain in late 1808, which probably distracted Napoleon from completing the military conquest of Spain.

Corrigan's biography of Wellington is a very serviceable one volume history for the general reader and for the military professional looking for a straightforward narrative.

Ronald Pawly has done an excellent job in capturing the history of Belgian arms in the period between Napoleon's first abdication in 1814 and his final defeat at Waterloo over a year later on June 18, 1815. Mr. Pawly has drawn from a variety of sources with special attention to the Archives of the Belgian Royal Army. The book contains a wealth of illustrations rarely seen in other Napoleonic historical treatments. "Wellington's Belgian Allies 1815" highlights the fact that many officers in the Belgian army of 1815 were veterans of Napoleon's Grande Armee prior to his departure from the French throne in 1814 and found themselves, while wearing the French cross of the Legion of Honour earned on Napoleon's behalf, fighting the very units they had served in from 1806-1814. Mr. Pawly does a superb job in tracing out various unit histories and describing their uniforms. This book is a very welcomed addition to the period in addressing a much overlooked ally of the European coalition against the Emperor Napoleon during the Hundred Days Campaign.
