A Great Field Guide.......2002-09-21
The Access books are always well written, concise, and packed with interesting trivia. My only complaint is that Hawaii hasn't been updated in a while (about 3-4 years) so most of the restaurants we came across weren't listed, which was disappointing. The tourist spots generally don't change, though, and the maps and other factual information is terrific. Whether you are a first time visitor to the islands or a seasoned traveler, you will find these books to be well organized, helpful, and packed with useful information.

I have many in the series of Access guides. I love the color coded key. Blue for Hotels, Green for shopping, Red for food, etc. The numbered maps make it easy to find your hotel and everything nearby! The Hawaii book was outstanding, as expected.
Hawaii's Best Resource for the "Not So Rich and Famous".......2000-08-02
For the last 40 years I have been visiting the Hawaiian Islands, for the last 15 I have been using "Access Hawaii" as my guide. It gives you the tools to have a great day of adventure, sharing the not so common places of interest that some of us find exceptionally interesting. They also tell of all the typical "tourist traps" but give you the inside story on it. From Hotels to dining, excursions, basic island info and the "Best Of" sections, this book is like gold. I have read them all and have yet to discover a better guide to help you have a perfect vacation. The reviews they provide in the book are as accurate as I have ever seen and I have never been dissapointed when arriving at or eating at the locations they suggest. This is definately a "two thumbs up" way to explore the Hawaiian Islands!

I found this to be a riveting story full of drama, action and surprises. It documents the adventures of Tom Fleeger in the Summer of 1948 during his interaction with the Cuban revolutionary groups as they struggled to overthrow the Baptista Government. It is a smoothly flowing fast-paced action packed story interlaced with romantic interludes. The reader will be tempted to read the book completely through as I did without putting it down. This high drama story along with its high profile charcters make it a perfect vehicle for either a theater or a TV movie.

Have fun getting inside the mind of a hard-working contract killer.......2006-04-16
David Fishers is the ghost writer behind the story of Mafia hit man Joey. Fisher has already published the bestseller Joey the Hitman, and his second memoir with the anonymous Joey focuses on a specific hit--number 29--in Joey's career of over thirty contract murders.
The book is told from Joey's first person point of view. He lays #29 out as a reckless decision, a poor choice in his calculated career. He should have laid low after #28, should have listened to his instincts, but he needed the money for his gambling habit.
The 1968 crime bosses and gambling numbers runners are sufficiently colorful to hold the reader's attention, and the moral code of the tough guys is fascinating, as are Joey's expectations of his "old lady" back at home. He's not college-educated, but Joey's no slouch. He manages a gambling ring and plots his every move to stay on the down low to the law and the right side of the Mafia. He's hardworking and methodical. His tale of a hit that spiraled out of control is a terrific narrative from a tough, cocky wiseguy. Is it 100% true? Probably not. A great read? You bet.
Neat insight, but a repetitive and tedious story.......2003-05-03
Joey is going to make a hit. Hit number 29 in fact. This time it's a bit strange. He knows the intended victim from childhood, the guy who hired him has a vendetta against him, he's got people following him, and he's not quite sure if the guy deserves what he's getting.
The book boils down to whether in the end, the victim gets killed, or Joey gets shafted. In order to describe how he kills someone, he describes the events leading to, during, and after the job has been done. While hitting is a great story, the preparation involved, along with the needless and pointless details is not.
Joey seems to describe his days at the track, his arguments with his wife, how he hates one guy, how numbers are run. Seemingly sidetracked, he sometimes forgets he's hitting a guy and describes the tedious day to day movements of his own life. When he does go back to the hit, the mystery of the victim is fragmented and hardly fluid.
While interesting in the beginning, towards the later half it gets pretty monotonous, as if delaying the ending in order to fill a few more pages.
What saves it is that is a true story, and does provide insight to the methodical way a hit is accomplished, along with a description of a life of a New York criminal.
Will The Real Joey Please Stand Up.......2003-03-29
Joey was a real contract killer, but not a Mafioso. He just did some work for them from time to time. Not an unusual situation. He died some years ago from natural causes. His obituary was in Time Magazine. This book appears to have been put together from Fisher's notes without Joey available to fill in the holes. Fisher had to ad-lib some facts, but did not have specific knowledge. For instance, when Joey smelled trouble he took the safety off two of his .38s. Revolvers do not have external safeties, and no hitman would use a semi-automatic (which has an external safety), even if reliable .38 semis were available in the '50s and early '60s. There is always the chance of a misfire, and with a semi one has to go thru a clearing drill to get off a shot. With a revolver one has merely to pull the trigger again. Also, tailing someone as Joey did it would get you made within a very short time; and; no phone tap would be be done in such a dangerous way. But if you read the book carefully and between the lines, there is some good information. Is the book worth reading? I say Yes.
Joey's the man.......2003-02-13
Not nearly as good as the first book "Joey the Hitman" but still a great page turner. The most entertaing part was near the end. The killer calls up his cheeseball attorney to answer some police questions. When he tells him about the murder he is under question for, and that yes he did do it, the the lawyer laughs and says "Why can't you get into something safe like dope smuggling?" I wish I knew what his real name was. Oh yeah, one other thing. No matter what anyone says about these books by "Joey", the tone of the writing and the facts do ring true, very much so, especially when compared side by side with books by other contract killers. Those that say otherwise are full of hot air.
Great Book!.......2003-02-10
This book really gave an in depth look at what goes through a hitman's mind. I found it compelling and hard to put down. I constantly felt like I knew what was going on inside Joey's head.
Oh, and HA HA I'm the first one to review this book!!

Made me a believer...........2002-02-02
This book is great! I wasn't fully convinced in the truth of Chinese/Moon-based horoscopes, but after reading through parts of this book (especially MY horoscope), I became a believer. The best part of it is that it gets specific about what you can expect this coming year and sums up what happened last year. That's what convinced me, how specific and accurate it was about my personality and the past year.
The sections on each sign are general enough to give you a picture of the sign's respective characteristics, then get into more detail about the past and present year, and even gives a bit of advice. The author includes famous people and a sign appropriate quote in each section.
The book is easy to read - definitely not a book for the Chinese horoscope expert - but for the layman that wants to learn more and have a bit of insightful fun. It's marketed at an affordable price, too.
I spent hours in the bookstore narrowing which book I was going to buy-- and this one was it!

This method of circular knitting is much simpler than dealing with the clumsiness of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles. However, a friend who has learned Bordhi's other method--Magic Loop--says it is even easier. I'd like to see the book(let) she's published about that available here as well.

I am brand new to sock knitting but have already learned that I don't love DPNs, so knitting socks on circular needles holds great appeal. This book has some helpful instructions and attractive patterns. I am finding it to be a good purchase. It is slender for it's cost.

Working socks on two circular needles is great for socks. But this book does nothing to help the person who wants to be able to create socks for multiple sizes and then experiment with design and needle size or yarn or just want to do more than the few patterns in the book.
So I suggest Sensational Knitted Socks
This book is incredible. You can use the same pattern to knit on 4 DP needles, 5 DP needles, and 2 Circular needles. All the instructions are clear and concise. Plus the book allows you to make 1000's of different types of styles of socks. Combine different patterns to get great socks and challenging projects.
Not worth it.......2007-05-30
I was very disappointed on the content of this book compared to the cost. There are better sock knitting books for one-half the cost that have multiple sock sizes, great graphics, colored photos and easy to read charts and instructions. The publisher should have allowed us to see inside the book - something missing on so many knitting books on this site! The 2 needle technique is very interesting but not worth the price of the book. Check it out at your local library.
Love it, but.......2007-05-28
This book woud rate 5 stars if only there were a couple more pictures showing how to use two circulars. I had to look at my copy of "Sensational Knitted Socks" (which credits the method to Cat Bordhi) to see how to do it. Now that I have it figured out (and it is really simple) I just love this method and use it a lot. This book is worth buying for the patterns alone - especially the Leaf and Tendril Socks and the Two Alert Cats. Cat's writing style makes the book worth having, also. I read that she is coming out with a new book of two circular patterns, and I do hope that it includes better pictures.

Light touch on a deep subject.......2006-03-10
While the individual tips are certainly valid and helpful, an overall organizing principle to group tips might increase the effectiveness of the book. The brevity of tips makes the content accessible, but does not provide much depth topic by topic. In addition, the very compelling illustrations that are included in the book are not tied into the text they accompany. More insight into the background or intent of the drawings would be valuable (while preserving confidentiality of course).

World Trade Center attack: Bereaved children will benefit........2001-10-04
The deaths at the World Trade Center and Pentagon triggered a strong reaction in me, especially when I read how many children had lost a parent, because I lost both parents when I was young (my father when I was 4, my mother when I was 5). Recently I had started a small e-mail group of adults who went through similar parental-loss experiences, and it has been very helpful to meet others who went through this. This book has helped my thinking – children see things differently from adults, and feel things differently, and this book explores all that. As a social worker in a former career, I facilitated bereavement support groups at a major Manhattan cancer agency, and realized the bereavement process is a long one even for adults. One of my desires at this time is to connect with those who lost friends or family members in the terrorist attacks (or those who know them), so that I and those in my group might directly or indirectly offer supportive insights.
