I would've liked more behind the scenes mob information. The book focused too much from an FBI perspective. Also, I got a little tired of the agents giving the mob boss, Paul Castellano, so much respect and sympathy! At times it was like they felt sorry for the guy because they have to do their job and arrest him. Hello! The guy is a leader of the mob! These people lie, cheat, steal and kill for a living!!!
Great book and hard lessons........2007-08-10
First off, I'd like to say that I appreciate the way the authors were to Paul Castellano. They weren't necessarily sympathetic, but they were respectful. Some people ask why respect a killer, many people kill for many different reasons, currently, many people are killing other people under the guise of war. They respected him as a human being, a flawed person like the rest of us and saw no need in treating him poorly which is bad tact for anyone of any stature. With all that aside, this is a great book into the inner workings of Cosa Nostra, it aptly shows the older members of the old ways and the ways in which they dealt with the world around them. It is very true that those ways are essentially gone. The book overall shows a human being that had risen to power and slowly loses his grasp on all that he obtained. It also shows the death of the old ways and a birth to a newer and less successful new age of Cosa Nostra. Salud, to the agents that showed genuine respect to another human being, regardless of his standing in life.

The authors are the ones who actually got past the Dobermans, snuck into Paul Castellano's mansion, planted the bug, and then listened to it for all those months! Gloria, Paul's maid and mistress who lived with him for his final ten years, also provided the authors with many insights. It just doesn't get any more authoritative than this.
The authors also *very* briefly summarize points of Mafia history (such as Donnie Brasco) along the way. Most of the chapters are only a few pages, which makes it convenient to stop and resume.

One of the best and funniest books about knitting that I have ever read. The reader gets inspiration from the pictures, easy understandable patterns and lovely ways to use yarn! I recommend this book to new knitters as well as those that have knitted forever - everyone can find something here to enjoy and easily learn from.

I found that this book has lots of cute projects, but when I tried to knit one (baby booties) the pattern was wrong -- a disappointment considering I had already purchased the yarn!! There is little point in owning a knitting book with unusable patterns.

Similar to the Stitch n Bitch Knitting book, this sequel has many of the same style patterns. Likewise, some are really fun and fresh while others simply flounder.
This is a nice collection of knitting patterns and there are several that I can't wait to get started on.
The layout of this book is MUCH better than the first, without the weird orange pages and such. I would really recommend this for anyone who enjoyed the first book and is looking for some patterns to take their skills to the next level.

This book is a must-have for any knitter who loves to knit cool, fun projects. The patterns are broken down so that they are not too intimidating, although I did find some to be more difficult than others. The intro section provides some great tips on gauge (a consistent problem for me), shaping and miscellaneous other techniques. Great for beginning knitters who are ready to try slightly some more challenging projects, as well as more advanced knitters who just want to have some fun! I would definitely recommend this book.

I believe this book would only be of interest to selected people. Those would be people who want to know that, for example "pumila L. A small to large shrub of upright habit with downy youg shoots and point, coarsely toothed leaves. E North America. I 1762." To be fair, there are probably botantist and perhaps nusary people who would recognise the value in this type of manual. My point is that to the layman this is of limited value. The one thing I did learn is to never buy a book with out at least seeing a table of contents. The main contents of this manual are the short descriptions, of which I provided an example.

Firstly, ignore the TWO, yes TWO, negative reviews... There is always the couple of folks who "just don't get it." I picked this up a Baby's r US and thumbed through it while waiting to go on the "baby shower registration" escapade... I enjoyed the book so much, I bought it from Amazon.com. (only one copy at the store and it was beat up.)
The author talks writes in lingo that is not meant for the "wimpy" guy or the guy is so full of himself that he honestly believes that his stuff don't stink. This is written for the Football/Hockey watchin', beer drinkin', pool playin', laugh out loud kind of guy. The survival tips listed, both before and after the birth, were actually covered in our hospital's childbirth class... Reinforced actually, as I had already read them all here... This isn't an owners manual for your NFU (new family unit), but will show you some great (and some not so) things about to come your way.

I bought this for my husband. It is the first baby related material that I have seen him read willingly. He chuckles out loud and actually starts conversations with me about the material. Good info, put into words that a guy can relate too. The humor takes away some of that aprehension that a lot of new dads face.
FANTASTIC HELPER FOR DADS.......2007-02-20
I've gone through a number of these types of books and this one is by far the best one out there. The author keeps it light, at the same time conveying what's really important to the new dad with honesty and a brutal sense of humor. It makes the new dad feel like he has some company in this new and alien experience of having kids. After reading it, I recommended it to all my buddies whoare in the same boat. It truly takes the edge off of first time fatherhood. Nice job!
Good satire and short on the new-age stuff. Perfect for guys........2007-02-15
I got started late on the whole fatherhood thing. I retired from the USAF at 39 and had my first daughter shortly thereafter. I got this book and a few others from my girlfriend and this one is my kind of read. Nothing wrong with new-age books, but they just aren't for me. The humor is spot-on and clearly a jab at military lingo, which deserves jabbing. This is definitely not for the stiff-neck Frank Burns-types. Also, the definitions in the back are excellent. I knew nothing (and I mean nothing) about babies and now I've got a whole new vocabulary. One warning..if you're extra sensitive, don't buy it!

Good Things Come in Small Packages.......2006-08-18
As an avid and diehard Fitzgerald fan, I seek out any material that covers him, his circle, or the "Lost Generation" in general.
Though the book occupies less than two hundred pages, Tomkins does a fine job of making it feel warm and intimate. What's more, you get the privilege of learning about the Fitzgeralds, Hemingway, Cole Porter, Picasso and others. Gerald and Sara Murphy were a class act and lived life for no one but themselves. They seemed wonderfully down to earth and sympathetic to the situations of their friends and family. It seems they did indeed "write the book" on how to live right--The Fitzgeralds were said to have lived poorly on massive amounts of money while Gerald and Sara Murphy lived grandly on far less income; with them, it was not about appearances and pleasing society, but about family and togetherness.
This wonderful little biography spans the 1910's to the 1960's in a relatively short breath and perhaps my only complaint is that there is not more. I certainly turned the last page wanting for more. If you are interested at all in "The Lost Generation" or the modernist movement, you will adore this book. Theirs was an evanescent time, one worth reading about and dreaming about.

This book had the subject matter worthy of a good book and I came away from this book feeling cheated. The author's research was very sketchy about Sara and Gerald Murphy -- I wanted to know so much more. I'm sure there is a better book out there on this interesting couple.

It's been nearly 30 years since I read this book and I remember it with delight. Sara and Gerald Murphy made living an art form. Sure, it's fun that they knew the famous writers and artist of the age, but it is their love for each other, their children, and their homes that make them the interesting people we would all like to know. Heck, that we would all like to be. Tomkins, too, is an excellent writer who lent much insight and charm to the story.

This is one of the most memorable books I've ever read, perfectly capturing the period and perils of that lost generation. Not only is the subject fascinating, but Calvin Tompkins' writing is beautiful and lyrical.
