A must-have book if you are living in London.......2005-08-19

I lived in London for three months in the summer of 2001, and I needed to find some of the basics while I was there. I knew where the grocery stores, drugstores and bookstore all were, but I didn't know of a good place to get a haircut.

Time Out was my weekly bible for plays, concerts and movies, and I saw the Time Out London Shopping book in the newsstand store near my flat where I got my daily newspaper. Thumbed through it and bought it.

One of the most memorable experiences I ended up having in London was going to Geo. F. Trumper on Curzon Street in Mayfair, near the Green Park Tube station. It's over 125 years old and still has the character of a barbershop from the era. Glass cases in the front of the shop with their signature men's grooming needs, wood and brass everywhere, and barbers dressed in white button-down shirts, ties and vests.

Price-wise, at 24 pounds (or was it 26 pounds?) for a men's haircut, it was no higher than Dellaria in Boston or Piaf in Washington, D.C., adjusted for the exchange rate, of course. What really set it apart from anywhere in the States was the decor and the level of professionalism. We're talking about a barbershop that offers lessons in how to achieve the perfect shave! I had to take pictures of the barbershop. It's that memorable!

If you want to step back in time and feel quintessentially British (and you are male, since they are a gentleman's barbershop), go to Geo. F. Trumper.

I also found a great chocolate shop and a great cheese shop through the Time Out London Shopping guide -- Charbonnel et Walker on Old Bond Street in the Royal Arcade (don't let the French in the name fool you... it's a British chocolatier) and Paxton & Whitfield on Jermyn Street in Mayfair for cheese.

These are just three of the finds I found in London thanks to the Time Out London Shopping guide. If you need to find something in London while staying there or living there, this is as indispensible as the Time Out weekly guide to everything entertainment.

A Must for any Gangster Buff.......2007-07-08

Unquestionably one of the best biographies I've read of a Depression era criminal in a long, long time. Over the years every published work about Baby Face Nelson has portrayed him as essentially nothing more than a homicidal, trigger-happy, blood-thirsty psychopath to whom killing was barely an incident in a busy criminal career. Finally, a book has hit the shelves which explores beyond the public image and into the complex character of the man himself. Baby Face was violent, tough, and possessed by an explosive temper, to be sure, but he was also street-smart, respected, and held in high esteem by many of his associates - not just a Dillinger follower, as many historians suggest. By no means do the authors attempt to whitewash Nelson's way of life or validate his terrible crimes. They do, however, provide what I believe is an honest appraisal of a man who, in addition to robbing banks and killing people, was a son, brother, husband, and father. Read this, I doubt very much you'll be disappointed.

Excellent Biography.......2006-08-30

This is a difficult book to review because it's truly head and shoulders above most books I've read in this genre and that sounds like a knock against the others and it's not ... this is just a well written book. The subject matter makes it difficult to distinguish fact from fiction and to substantiate identities, locations and time lines. So my hat's off to anyone who tries to make some sense of the sensational headlines, first person accounts and "alibis" of the time. Writing such a book, though exciting, must be a nightmare sifting through all this info. "Baby Face" does an admirable job in bringing all this into a coherent focus. In addition, this book chronicles and brings into focus someone who has been on the periphery in the other books I've read on this time period, (specifically Dillinger, Chicago crime and Depression bank robbers). The book also gives the reader insight into the early workings of J. Edgar Hoover's (F)BI and its personnel and contains the most detailed description of "The Little Bohemia" debacle I've read. Very entertaining and interesting book.

This was a long overdue book, which describes the life and crimes of one of the most infamous outlaws to come out of the Dillinger gang. After Dillinger's death, "Baby Face" Nelson exploded into the public's eye and his crimes were the focus of most newspapers and Detective magazines across the country. Helmer and Nickel have done an excellent job of bringing this bandit's life to light, as well as some surprises never before published on the gangster from Chicago. This is a highly researched volume of work and should be in everyone's library.

This book is the best book about Baby Face Nelson, I enjoyed reading this book greatly. Everything you wanted to know about Lester Gillis is in this book. Every part of his life was explained in great detail; the authors did not leave anything out. I highly recommend this book to people who are into the depression era gangsters.

This is a great book -- but not a quick reference.......2005-04-07

You must read well into the description of a plant to find out if it's shade or sun lover. It's not something you can quickly discern.
Also missing is the distance needed between plants which is so helpful when developing a bed and purchasing more than one of each kind.

No nonsens book about discipline.......2007-09-12

I read this book when my son was about 18 months old and I was at my wits end. I didn't know how to deal with his sudden bad behavior. This book was amazing! John Rosemond really helped me to understand why my son did the things that he did and to stop taking it personally. He takes a very no nonsense approach to disciplining children that I think is spot on and has worked beautifully with my son. He is a little bit antagonistic toward many modern discipline ideas such as the focus on promoting self esteem and reasoning with children but I believe he is justified in this as so many of the ideas today are fundamentally flawed. As you read this really think about what he's saying and you'll see that he's right. Now, that said, some of his ideas are a little drastic and not really feasible for everyone. Just ignore those ideas and soak up all the other great ideas in this book and the overall concept. He does promote spanking in certain situations but it's not an overwhelming idea in this book and he does present other methods for disciplining. If you are against spanking, you should be able to just gloss over those points. I think all parents should read this book long before their children turn two. I highly, highly recommend it!

Not a terrific book but not completely terrible........2007-07-22

This book has some good suggestions but it's definitely not a great book. It really doesn't have much substance to it. What I hate the most about this book though is the obnoxious and condescending tone the author uses. The author speaks as if he knows everything about children and overgeneralizes too much, and furthermore he does so with an obvious arrogance.

It was overnight that I swore a body snatcher had taken over my very well behaved 2 year old! This book saved either me or my two year old, I'm not sure. I truly was pulling my hair out and didn't know what to do. This book doesn't just tell you what you should do, and then when the time comes you want to do it, but aren't quite sure how to get from point A to C.

This book breaks it down step by step. Example, a two year old and younger will not stay in time out. I would be fighting to hold my son down. The book suggests that when you go to put the child in time out the minute you step back you tell them "they can get up now". Now they're not getting up because they want to, but because you gave them permission. Boom, you just took back the "power"! Then the author takes it from that step to the next and on until where your 2 year old will do a timeout just because you tell them to, without a fight! This book gives you real life examples, and takes you step by step! It really was amazing how after reading this book I felt that I was in control and could handle it. When I had confidence, my child responded and he became well behaved again! No screaming, no fighting. When the parent is in calm control, the situation stays in calm control, and the child feels safe and responds.

This book is great for a parent of an 18 month old on up. The author gives real life situations and step-by-step for older children as well.
There is an abundance of information in this book, you don't have to agree with everything in it, but no matter what style parenting you use, I think anyone will be able to use the majority of what this book has to offer. I find myself referring back to it at different stages of my children's life!

After checking this book out from the library over and over, I finally asked for it for Christmas and am so glad to have it on the shelf. It helps me so much when I think my son is hopeless, I can take a step back and calm myself down again and realize he's normal. It helps me keep a cool head and be a better parent!

Wonderful Book.......2006-05-18

Rosemond is one of my favorite parenting experts. I do not agree with everything he says, but a lot of it is wonderful advice.

This book's strongest points are that while the first 18 months are child-cenetered, the move then has to be made to a parent-centered arrangement. This makes perfect sense. It gives practical advice on child-proofing so your child can be free to explore and gives parents real ways to communicate with their children that the child can understand. I love how the book stresses getting away from "okay?" at the end of sentences, making it sound like you are asking instead of telling your child to do something.

I personally do not spank at all as I am not comfortable with it, but this is not a "pro-spanking" book by any means. But, the author does say it is OK under some circumstances. I also wish Rosemond were a bit more pro-breastfeeding, he doesn't talk about it much. Some of his thoughts on potty training I am not so sure about either.

My favorite chapter was the one about daycare and parent care. Finally, Rosemond just comes out and says that home care for children 3 and under is the ideal situation. He says it can be provided by a mom or dad. I do agree to an extent, but what about breastfeeding? Sorry, dad's just can't do that one.

I really think that if parents followed Rosemond's advice we would hear a lot less of "this is so hard" when a group of parents got together. There is a wealth of advice in this book.

It also tells some funny stories like 'Miss Blabbermouth" in the surgeon's waiting room, and the time the author 'mooned" an oncologist. It also exposes the hopefully outdated 'poor bastard with cancer" syndrome. Finally, it totals up some interesting things such as number of needle sticks, hours in an IV chair, CT and PET scans, bone marrow extractions, and the amount of money that the disease has cost so far-billed versus paid. It is also a legacy book in that it tells many of the unforgettable lessons learned while growing up in a blue-collar, sports-minded neighborhood in the guts of Philadelphia. It tells about a dad with two very separate and distinct personalities, one a very bad 'drunk dad" and one an outstanding 'good dad," and a perfect mother loving to the very end. It outlines the author's two older brothers and two younger sisters and their important roles in the family, a strong one to this day, all of whom volunteered to be stem-cell donors. It describes the author's wife's warmth, understanding and stoic battle alongside of her husband. Above all, this is a 'good news" book, one which is intended to inform as well as bring a few knowledgeable smiles to those who have been through similar experiences, and even bigger smiles to those who haven't.
