4 out of 5 stars Memoir of a Vanishing Place.......1996-12-07

Falls Memories is really more of a collection of short pieces on life in the Western corner of Belfast than a novel or history with any coehsive theme. It is literally things Gerry Adams, President of the political party Sinn Fein, remembers about the neighborhood in which he grew up, or memories of those who lived in the area. There is some attempt to give a brief history and political context for the memories, but these sections are poorly integrated into the narratives about his boyhood adventures, the characters in the area, and the traditions of the Falls. The context pieces sound driven (perhaps appropriately) by anger and frustration while the narratives, even when describing violence or sectarian harassment, have a softer feel to them. Falls Memories is a valuable book, despite these shortcomings. First of all, it chronicles life in an area that has literally been obliterated in the last 25 years. As the Northern Ireland government has torn down unfit housing and replaced it with more sanitary and comfortable abodes they have erased many streets from the map, replacing them with new layouts which meet new security standards and are less emotionally charged with history. Secondly, much of the book deals with day to day occurances which might happen anywhere in the world - young boys sneaking into movies, girls playing jump rope, adults telling stories abuot the "good old days." Falls Memories serves as a reminder that the people affected by the Troubles are not so much different than the rest of us.

i just can't say i feel the same way. i keep it because i keep everything. but i'm not a simple scrapbooker so i find the book a bit bland in it's ideas and i was uninspired by the text.

I love Stacy Julian's take on scrapbooking. Not everything has to be chronological!! This book has given me a freedom and renewed passion for this hobby and a reminder to look at the little things.

5 out of 5 stars Super, Super, Super!.......2007-08-10

Stacy Julian gives new meaning to scrapbooking. This book is SO easy to read and such fun. Each page is an example of how, what, and even why she scrapbooks. There are wonderful layouts and examples on every page. After reading her philosophies I thought to myself 'why didn't I think of that????' She is extremely creative and a great teacher. You will learn easy ways to document your life in a meaningful way (that isn't necessarily chronological.) This is the way that I will be scrapbooking from now on.....thanks Stacy!!

5 out of 5 stars This is revolutionary.......2007-06-30

Oh my goodness! This book is fantastic! It's time we move away from the Creative Memories philosophy and move towards a creative approach to scrapbooking. Not only does Stacy Julian introduce a new reason to scrapbook but I love her samples in the book. I loved that not all the pictures of herself make her look perfectly made up - how long have I been afraid to scrapbook less than perfect pictures of me? Seriously! I'm rarely photo-ready so why not scrapbook life as it really is. And life is certainly more than the each big holiday to Disneyland, or Christmas pageants. I have felt a lot more freedom to scrapbook whatever I feel and find pictures to match my story. Buy this book! You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2007-06-21

I would give this more stars if I could! This book is teriffic! I have had and/or read COUNTLESS books on scrapbooking, and this is one of my two favorites! Stacy's method of scrapbooking is NOT about products or the latest trends or styles; it's about getting your photos and memories in albums. Her pages are simple and to the point -- YOU can embellish as much as you like. I don't care how many albums she has, as one reviewer criticized! She is just trying to help people NOT to feel overwhelmed with photos and scrapbooking. I wish that people would just NOT write reviews if a book is "not what [they] expected". If they feel 'deceived' by a book review or title, then I can understand it. I am so NOT like Stacy Julian, but I would like to be 1/2 that happy with life! She is so inspiring! Scrapbooking helps me appreciate my children -- see them in a different light -- in the midst of the chaos of raising them!! I love to browse through this book -- getting page ideas or just inspiration. It also has influenced how I take pictures, or should I say WHAT I take pictures OF! I highly recommend this book as well as Rebecca Sower's book "Scrapbooking Life's Little Treasures". If I only had these two books, I'd be happy. Their messages about scrapbooking and family are very powerful!

                2 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-05-13

This book is for higher functioning individuals on the spectrum. It is for kids with very high coginitive abilities and comunication skills. The idea behind this book is to use the sometimes rigid interests of kids on the spectrum and teach them socially appropriate skills.

                5 out of 5 stars What a great idea.............2006-03-21

Power Cards is a great tool in helping some autistic children modify and/or change their inappropriate behavior. It might not be the right tool for all autistic children, but for some it can really open up doors to social appropriateness and development. The examples are great and the clinical results listed in the book give a great deal of credibility to this strategy.

                5 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource.......2005-02-16

This book is wonderful and helps me so much with my Asperger's son. I was even able to share it with my son's special education teacher. She thought it was wonderful. It's a great resource for Asperger's children who have a special interest. It's a way to communicate with them. Well worth your money. I'm buying another copy to donate to my son's school.

5 out of 5 stars Hats Off to This Book!.......2004-12-17

Autism and its related condition, Asperger's Syndrome are neurobiolgical conditions that affect sensory processing and communication. The range is as great as there are people on the a/A spectrum and there are often overlapping behaviors.

People with Asperger's, or the "milder" form of autism often have special interests. These interests are often referred to as "obsessions" by the neurotypical population. The term "special interests" is much kinder and much more apt. In most cases, people who live or work with people who have special interests understandably try to limit the amount of time the person spends on the special interests. This is a rather stop-gap approach because it merely meets the needs of the neurotypical population and denies the person on the autism spectrum that much needed pleasure and release.

I love the way this book encourages professionals and other interested persons to use special interests to engage people on the spectrum. This is a very effective teaching method and will pay dividends.

In 1906, Suzannah Lessard's great-grandfather, the prominent architect, socialite, and hedonist Stanford White, was sensationally murdered by the husband of a showgirl White had seduced when she was 16. The acquittal of the killer on the grounds of insanity added to the scandalous gossip. In this beautifully written memoir, Lessard, a writer for the New Yorker, recalls growing up on the White family estate on Long Island, where the murder was a taboo subject. She evokes a sense of repressed and dark passion that infected the harmonious landscaping and architecture White had created. She writes of "coldness that may feel like warmth, or violence that presents as lust for life." In this extraordinarily literary nonfiction mystery, Lessard slowly reveals that her family history held more secrets than the murder, and reaches a startling and controversial climax.

                Book Description

The story of Stanford White--his scandalous affair with the 16-year-old actress Evelyn Nesbit, his murder in 1906 by her husband, the millionaire Harry K. Thaw, and the hailstorm of publicity that surrounded "the trial of the century"--has proven irresistable to generations of novelists, historians, and biographers. The premier neoclassical architect of his day, White's legacy to the world were such masterpieces as New York's original Madison Square Garden, the Washington Square Arch, and the Players, Metropolitan, and Colony clubs. He was also responsible for the palaces of such clients as the Whitneys, Vanderbilts, and Pulitzers, the robber barons of the Gilded Age whose power and dominance shaped the nation in its heady ascent at the turn of the century.

As the century rolled on, however, the story of Stanford White and Evelyn Nesbit came to be viewed as glamorous and romantic, the darker narrative of White's out-of-control sexual compulsion obscured by time. Indeed, White's wife Bessie and his son Larry remained adamantly silent about the matter for the duration of their lives, a silence that reverberated through the next four generations of their extended family.

Suzannah Lessard is the eldest of Stanford White's great grandchildren. It was only in her 30's that she began to sense the parallels between the silence about her great-grandfather's life and the silence about her own perilous experience as a little girl in her own home. Thus she became drawn to the remarkable history of her family in order to uncover its hidden truths, and in so doing to liberate herself from its enclosure at last. The result is a multi-layered memoir of astonishing elegance and power, one that, like a great building, is illumined room by room, chapter by chapter, until the whole is clearly seen.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and poignant........2005-12-18

Suzannah Lessard is to be complemented on this reflective and perceptive account. The family skeletons are unquestionably out of the closet, as she narrates the heartrending story of Evelyn Nesbitt, Harry K Thaw and her own ancestor's intertwined lives.

If you have read "Ragtime", this is the non-fiction truth behind the tale.

The murder of the brilliant architect - the "White" in McKim, Mead and White, whose clients included the Teddy Roosevelt White House -shocked New York's 400. This book deals not only with the events as they unfolded but also their repercussions in the author's family. Well written and poignant.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling story of a mixed legacy.......2003-08-24

What would it be like to be descended from one of America's most celebrated architects? For that matter, what would it be like to be descended from a man whose lurid, predatory sexual practices were once front-page news?

Members of the Stanford White family have had to deal with those issues for almost 100 years now, since White was gunned down at Madison Square Garden in 1906. For the most part, the White family did not discuss their illustrious pater familias, but Stanford White is ever-present, in all respects, in their collective lives. How the family did (or did not) deal with this mixed legacy would manifest itself over the next four generations.

Suzannah Lessard, a great-granddaughter of Stanford White, addresses this legacy squarely. She does not attempt to suger-coat White's personality, which combines breath-taking artistic genius with a self-indulgent predatory streak that ultimately led to his destruction. Through the book, she weaves multiple tales about her family, which includes stories of mental illness, sexual abuse, and emotional repression. She does this with remarkable candor.

This is a Social Register family. They are related to the Astors, the Winthrops, the Chanlers, the Roosevelts, the Rockefellers, etc. They own a magnificent property, designed by Stanford White, on Long Island. On the surface, it would appear that this family has the world as its oyster. Suzannah Lessard shows that no amount of social prominence and privelage can protect a family from the problems that can face us all.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating story by a lyrical writer.......2001-10-17

Powerful, lyrical writing builds the story of Stanford White one layer at a time. The writer, his granddaughter, is uniquely qualified to tell the tale of genius gone awry. You'll remember this story long after you finish it -- a sure sign that you've experienced not just a book, but true art.

4 out of 5 stars American History, Angst, Sex, Scandal.......2000-06-02

This book defies a brief explanation. I sensed deep passion in the author as I read her words, a passion for her family's weaknesses and strengths, a passion for knowing herself, a passion for the power of architecture, and a passion for her great-grandfather, the infuriatingly complex architect, Stanford White.

Stanford was generous and careless, creative and self-destructive, maniacally disciplined and utterly irresponsible. While he selflessly gave his heart and soul to his massive stone buildings, he thoughtlessly shattered the hearts and lives of the people around him. Even while he was racked by ill health, he drove himself in his work life AND his recreational life as if he were immortal. He either believed he could never die, or knew he surely must and so didn't care.

The sexual portrait of Stanford can be rather harrowing: The countless love nests he set up around New York; his systematic debauchery of young women (many of whom fell in love with him); the attorneys he hired to hush things up; the endless supply of cronies he found to join him in his nocturnal plundering--his appetites--and his ability to feed his appetites--knew no limits. As for Evelyn Nesbit, the celebrated beauty who arguably played a role in Stanford's murder, I'll just say she wasn't the first girl to ride in his red velvet swing.

Finally, two notes. This author presents architecture, and its impact on the human psyche, in a beautiful, moving way; she breathes life into the bricks of Stanford's buildings. And her depiction of the Gilded Age is superb. It's the stuff of a great trashy Summer novel. Except it's real. And probably still goes on today.

I should also warn future readers that there's a fair amount of incest in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A book worth every penny and every minute!.......1999-05-16

I initially read this book on a library loan as a small part of research for a project I was doing. Now I'm back at Amazon to purchase it. It's one I want to read again in leisure time, to savor, not only for the wealth of history it provides, and the painfully honest look into family self-deceptions, but for the absolutely beautiful writing it offers. The courage she shows in telling this story, and the honest treatment of her family (which I expected her to protect and make excuses for) and painstaking fairness to other characters, sometimes at the expense of her own history, is breath taking. Many of Ms. Lessard's descriptive passages are almost musical in quality, without ever falling to sappiness, and they bleed a depth of insight that one sometimes grasps only at a second glance. Her metaphorical passages are the most beautiful - I will never forget many of them. A joy and a privilege to read. Again.

3 out of 5 stars Mad Dog Coll.......2007-07-08

As someone who has always been somewhat fascinated by this particular individual, you can imagine how thrilled I was when I was able to obtain a copy of this book. I must admit, however, that aside from the psychological records and other public data, I came away a bit disappointed. Perhaps I was expecting too much, but I felt as though most of the book was a rehash of old newspaper articles covering Coll's criminal career. One example of misinformation is that Mr. Delap singles out one Enrico Battaglia as having possibly been the treacherous bodyguard who betrayed Coll to his enemies. The fact is that this same Battaglia had been killed more than three months earlier, on October 19, 1931, during a shoot-out with New York City police in a rooming house on Manhattan's upper West Side. Mr. Delap also wrote that Coll had met with other hoodlums in New Jersey in the hours preceding his death. There is absolutely nothing to substantiate this assertion. Coll, according to his widow, was alone when he left her in their Bronx apartment around noon on Sunday, February 7, 1932, and there are no records of what he did or who he was with until he appeared at the London Chemists pharmacy twelve hours later, shortly after midnight on Monday, February 8th, when he met his doom. In summation, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the life and death of Vincent Coll, but without much enthusiasm.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Read.......2004-09-16

As an Irishman I'm very surprised that I have never come across this gangster before. His life is intrinsically linked to the history of my country and the author deserves a lot of credit for the lengths he went in researching this story. It's lively, well told, sad, humane and above all very interesting. Brendan Delapp has managed to transform this gruelling human tragedy into a real page turner. It's a magnificent achievement and a canditate for book of the year (- though I'm not too sure when it was published!!!) One thing is sure Mad Dog Coll brings a whole new meaning to the term 'the Donegal mafia.'

                        5 out of 5 stars A Cracking Read.......2003-07-29

This biography is a breath of fresh air. The research is meticulous. Little nuggets of information are casually thrown into the text - like psychological reports, census information etc - as if they were in the public domain. Of all the gangster books I've read this is by far the most sensitive handling of a potentially thorny subject matter. There is a tendency in gangster literature to glamourise the subject but the man that emerges from these pages is a tortured soul who got very few chances in life. There is great sadness in the book and a very impressive analysis on what the American dream meant to poor emigrant families. Added to this, there is the author's lively style that keeps you hooked from page to page. Very impressive and highly recommended. But it is the research that makes this biography special. No stone left unturned clearly. It is a shame the book appears to be out of print. I picked it up in a second hand shop in New York and couldn't believe my luck. What a gem! Time for a reprint or maybe an offer from a more mainstream American publishing house.

4 out of 5 stars Gangster Biography of a Different Sort.......2003-01-31

Obtaining this book can be a somewhat difficult endeavor, but it's well worth the time and effort invested, if you want to read a well-researched, compulsively readable gangster biography. Until this book came out, there was little available on Coll's background, his life, and his death, even though his name was mentioned in any tome having to do with organized crime. I never understood this paucity of hard information, since Coll's persona was always as fascinating as that of more notorious mobsters like Legs Diamond or Dutch Schultz. Finally, an author has arrived who is able to do Coll's story justice. Delap combines a reporter's meticulous knack for research with a novelist's flair for descriptive and eloquent language that evokes an era long gone. He examines Coll's roots in rural Ireland and his background of poverty, his youthful introduction to criminality and the world of gangs on New York's tough streets, and his brief, brutal reign as one of New York's most feared and vicious racketeers. Boyishly handsome, and evidently personable, Coll was the sociopathic James Dean of Prohibition-era criminals. Only 24 years old when he met his inevitably violent end, he was associated with all the prominent malefactors of his time, including Legs Diamond, Dutch Schultz, Owney Madden, and others. His death in a telephone booth at the hands of his underworld enemies has been re-created again and again in movies and films in the decades since it occured in 1932 (perhaps most notably in the classic film "Kiss of Death").
Even if you're not enamored of the "True Crime" genre, this is a compelling examination of an aberrant personality, an exploration of one of the most fascinating periods in 20th century America, and Delap's book sterling, praiseworthy accomplishment.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-06-26

This is a well researched biography of a long neglected legend of Prohibition era New York: Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll. He's rated chapters and passages in books on Dutch Schultz, Legs Diamond, and gangsters in general by American authors but it took an Irish historian to give the Irish-born "Mad Dog" a full length bio. Check it out. It's one of the more intelligent gangster books and still has the bark of a tommy gun.
