Customer Reviews:
Very imformative.......2007-09-07
This book was recommended by a friend and it is exceptionally informative and well written. I would recommend it to anyone seeking more info on organic gardening. It has ideas that are cheap to do that work wonderfully!
Organic is not a synonym for boring.......2007-07-23
This book is so bland and boring it is nearly generic. If you are at all excited by the prospect of things organic, don't buy this book. Look for something with juices flowing in the veins or you will find yourself semi-comatose and bored with organic before you begin.
This book could have been more than just a [quite generalized] reference book. It could have been an inspiration. Fortunately it's recyclable.
It's okay, but it's not the original!.......2007-05-15
I was in a used book store recently and compared the old and new versions side-by-side. I bought the old one. The old version has so much great detailed information that the new one lacks.
Don't get me wrong, the new version is "prettier". It's still got some great stuff in it you might not find in some other sources. But, it is more of a treatise or "Cliff's Notes" version--it isn't exhaustive.
Still a great reference for those new to gardening. However, it should have been called "Rodale's All-New Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening: LITE".
Encyclopedia... That's Just What It Is!.......2007-02-07
Rodale always does an excellent job of researching what we gardeners want to know about. And the ALL-NEW ENCYCLOPEDIA of ORGANIC GARDENING is no exception. I refer to it frequently and usually find the information I'm looking for.
A Great Beginner's Reference (with a small "bug" of an error).......2007-01-18
I have repeatedly returned to my copy of this book, usually when I am about to embark on a garden chore and want a refresher course in the hows and whys. The alphabetical topics include "Animal Pests", "Asparagus", "Beneficial Insects", "Cold Frames", "Edible Landscaping", Garlic, "Irrigation", "Pelargoniums", "Trees" and hundreds more, all simple to locate as though you were reading a phone book. Each entry contains an encyclopedia-style summary with an organic method slant. Beginners and intermediate gardeners will find the info provided invaluable, but if you want an in-depth explanation, seek a more expert book.
Other features include a recommended reading list, an index of common plant names paired with their botanical names, and simple line drawings illustrating many of the book's topics.
That said, I was sad to see a mistake in the "tomato" entry as I was reading it just now... the book recommends planting dill near your tomatoes to attract tomato hornworms. Unfortunately, these are not the same species and killing caterpillars found on dill will simply reduce the number of swallowtail butterflies in your garden (tomato hornworms are a type of sphinx/hawk moth.) I advocate planting the dill anyway and leaving the caterpillars alone! The rest of the 5 pages devoted to tomatoes includes an overview on choosing plants or seeds, bed preparation and planting, tomato pruning tips, recommended fertilizers, how to make long-lasting tomato cages, a disease summary, harvesting information, recommended cultivars for organic growers, and tomatoes raised in small spaces.
A nice reference for the gardener who is in a hurry to get outside and plant!

Just the Best!.......2003-07-31
I purchased this reference a few years ago. Once I received it and began using it, I wondered how I'd ever gotten along without it. The author's British and so the dictionary's common names are more often "British" than "American", but it is still the handiest plant dictionary I have. It is a little larger than pocket size, but it is still small enough to be held comfortably in one hand.
A review is superfluous.......2000-07-10
This book does not need a review. Anybody who is involved in plants, other than the garden kind, knows full well that this is an essential reference. Quite up to date too, which is pretty amazing in view of the pace that science sets. There is an enormous mass of data in here, printed on very thin paper, making for a very handy book that will fit a spot near where you need it, which is likely to be often.
My most used reference book.......1999-11-07
As a graduate student in ecology I often encounter unfamiliar genera in the literature, and a quick peek in Mabberley gives me enough taxonomic grounding to keep plowing ahead. By constantly referring to this book, I have greatly improved my knowledge of plant relationships.

Book Description
Willisâs Dictionary is a famous publication in the world of botany and horticulture. It is a comprehensive and indispensable reference to the generic and family names of flowering plants and ferns. The entries attempt to cover all published generic names from 1753 onwards and published family names from 1789, together with a number of supra- and infra-familial taxa where these have not been based on family or generic names. The generic names include many variant spellings and inter-generic hybrids. Brief characters of subfamilies are usually given. The treatment of the families and higher taxa of the Pteridophyta is based on the classification scheme proposed by Pichi-Sermolli. The synopses of the Bentham & Hooker and Engler & Prand systems are retained. This eighth edition is now published in paperback in order to make it available to a wider readership, not only of professional botanists, but also students and serious amateurs.

Delivers You to the Wolves.......2004-08-06
I am an experienced world traveler and mountain climber who used this book in 1999. I must say, I have never been so disappointed with a travel book in all my life. A few points: in the little town of Tlachichuca, Secor leads you to ONE person for climbing assistance. Knowing that, they take FULL advantage of climbers, grossly overcharging for services. Two: Secor's route descriptions are seemingly detailed but upon use are revealed as painfully inadequate. For instance, at Citaltépetl, Secor makes not one word of mention regarding "la lengua", the tongue of the glacier, which turns out to be the most difficult part of the whole ascent. Finally, and this is the most personal and non-important point to a casual reader, I don't like Secor's decision to follow the poor precedent set by the Mountaineers of favoring non-indigenous peak names. Thus as Tahoma and Koma Kulshan became Rainier and Baker, the majestic Citaltépetl is reduced to Pico de Orizaba. All in all, this is a good start (given the lack of anything better) but definitely make sure that every piece of information used from this book is followed up by a second source to avoid certain rip off and/or disappointment.
Very good.......2001-06-15
The book has a comprehensive list of routes for each mountain, it also provides good advice for begineers. However, there are two things I don't like form this book: 1) Need an update to reflect latest changes (Popo for example) 2) The book looks too simplistic, the format is ver bad for the type of information. The book has very few quality photos and the routes are difficult to follow.
I wish I could find a more up-to-date book about these beatiful mountains
Superb.......1999-12-04
RJ did a great job with this book. I used it way back in 1988 to climb the 3 big ones and found it absolutely accurate. He's got some great tips in there too!

"The Hoffa Wars" is the controversial and critically acclaimed masterwork of investigative journalism on the corruption-riddled Teamster Union.
This was the first book to present the case that Teamster's general president Jimmy Hoffa and two Mafia figures, Carlos Marcello and Santos Trafficante, might have arranged and executed the assassination of President Kennedy - a conclusion the U.S. House Select Committee on Assassinations came to a year later in its final report!
"The Hoffa Wars" delivers the inside stories on:
Hoffa's rise to power from local organizer to Teamsters general president.
Hoffa's role in the CIA-Mafia plots against Castro.
How and why Hoffa, Carlos Marcello, and Santos Trafficante plotted to kill President Kennedy.
The violence in Hoffa's home union local before his disappearance.
Hoffa's disappearance: who, why, and how - and the exclusive interviews with the men the FBI claimed did it.

Agility A step-by-step guide.......2004-05-01
This book is GREAT if you're just starting out in Agility. It teaches you how to start dogs on each obstacle, and how to progress through to the advanced level of the obstacle, then once you've mastered everything how to put a course together and run it. A very good book, which I recommend immensely!

Customer Reviews:
nothing new.......2007-10-09
I will start out by saying that this book is awesome for the person who has never ventured near a tee with scissors and razor blade in hand. The instructions are very clear and most often simple and easy to follow. Most of the designs are fairly basic and don't really require any previous sewing experience, though I would say if you want to get into any major restructuring of anything, sewing experience would be very helpful. My only issue with this book is the sizing issue I have run into with most of the patterns. I feel that the sizing in most patterns is for a flat-chested, less-shapely woman. I have had to adjust every shirt and skirt I have made. I am a size 8 or 10 and happen to be a bit busty (34DD) and have had issues with every top being too small in the bust. I would recommend this book to someone who is just discovering how fun it can be to recreate one's wardrobe, but for someone who has been doing it for a while may find the suggestions/patterns a bit been-there-done-that.
As advertised.......2007-10-01
Most of the styles in this book are a bit "edgy" for my more conservative tastes. I was hoping for a few ideas that I could use, but could not. I am passing this book on to my daughter and friends. The best was the wedding dress. It was really quite attractive and I know some young gals who could pull it off. Still looking for a book with some ideas for a more mature crowd.
Inspirational!.......2007-08-24
This T-shirt re-crafting book is fantastic! The projects are fun and most are fairly easy. The author gives clear directions and good step by step drawings. There are many creative ideas; tops, skirts, dresses, bags, pillows and much more. There are many small projects for scraps too. Most of the projects are good for all ages (I'm 43) and could be done even without a sewing machine, although it's much quicker with one. What I really love is that you get more like 300 ideas because she gives at least a couple variations on each project. Hit your local thrift stores and garage sales and even if you can barely sew, you could be wearing an awesome one of a kind skirt for less than $1!
Cool........2007-08-23
This book has many cool and cute ideas. And they are not all shirts. There are skirts, a checkbook cover, and an iPod cover, just to name a few. The directions are very well written, and the diagrams are very helpful. Warning: some of the shirt designs are not age appropriate for younger kids (under age 16 or so). There is, however, something for everyone.
Generation T.......2007-08-15
This book has lots of fun projects. It has many ideas that teens would enjoy. I am making several of the shirts with my daughter. Fun book

Plenty of dedicated crafters are also experienced gardeners, but if your thumb tends to be more glue-covered than green, you can still create wonderful items from the bounty of a less-than-expert garden or buy the supplies from a craft store or garden center. Designer Marie Browning provides a brief overview of craft-friendly flowers and herbs (and even fruits and vegetables), along with good instructions on various methods for pressing and drying them. The large selection of projects falls into several categories: personal and home fragrances, culinary, pressed-flower items, dried-flower decorations, and twig and vine projects. More than 80 recipes explain how to make facial scrubs, bath oils, potpourri, sachets, natural cleaning products, herbal cooking blends, fruit butters, flavored vinegars, syrups, spirited fruits and liquors, and more, plus there are step-by-step directions for an array of candles, frames, wreaths, arrangements, and garlands. Since many of these are destined to be gifts, the book also includes lovely packaging and labeling techniques, plus nice ideas for combining finished projects to produce themed gift baskets. For instance, a selection of culinary herbal blends, garden-herb biscuit mix, and flavored butters, along with a twig frame and a bark candle holder, make up the North Woods Basket, presented in a handmade wood container with natural-paper labels. Be sure to make a few extra items, since you won't want to give them all away. --Amy Handy

Customer Reviews:
great ideas!.......2001-02-13
I recently purchased this book, and upon a more thorough review at home, discovered just how marvelous it was! The book is great because it gives you a diverse selection of projects from using herbs, to pressing flowers, to making oils, to making gifts from things in your garden, to culinary crafting...I could go on and on. Also, the instructions are very simple and easy to follow and there are very nice, very clear photos for referal. This is the book for the person who likes to do more than one thing, not just focus on one type of craft.

Fills in a lot of gaps.......2007-07-30
My son is too old for "early intervention" and is definitely on the high functioning end of the continuum, which has made it difficult at time to find resources. So many books (and programs) are geared toward early intervention - which is fantastic - but we're past that point. A good percentage of the rest are geared towards kids not as lucky as mine who face much greater challenges and limitations.
This book deals with issues across the spectrum and functional level continuum specifically in relation with the issues and challenges adolescence poses for both kids and the adults in their lives. It is readable - the language is comfortable, the tone is positive and motivational, the ideas and suggestions are, for the most part, accessible to most people. Maybe a little too much emphasis of self-sacrifice, but that is offset by the chapters on balancing the needs of the family, couple and neurotypical siblings with the affected child.
Recommended highly for parents charting the rapids of adolescence in the lop-sided ASD rowboat.
Craving Information on Adolescents on the Spectrum?.......2007-05-27
Wow, finally some brave soul has ventured into the never, never land of discussion on this thorny topic - adolescents on the autism spectrum. I am a parent of a child with ASD and a Speech Language Pathologist working with adolescents on the spectrum. Ms. Sicile-Kira has a good start delving into the topic. Like most information I find on ASD these days, it is pitched towards individuals who are very high functioning. That leaves many of us in the dark about the dilemmas our less functional children may face. She touches on some weighty subjects like sex, drugs, and college (forgot the rock and roll!). She does a nice job explaining options for kids who have that many options ahead of them. We are still awaiting information for kids who pass through puberty and do not gain many of the skills Ms. Sicile-Kira discusses. I believe it will be a helpful start for many families and professionals, however, I still think it is time to take my pen in hand and talk about some of the more nitty gritty aspects of parenting more affected kids.
A Treasure trove for Parents of Autistic youngsters.......2007-04-10
Chantal Sicile-Kira wrote the definitive guide to the Needs of Autistic teenagers. Parents, this treasure trove of thought and action provoking material is a must have to help your youngster grow into an adult you can be proud of.
Detailed and helpful for parents.......2006-08-23
As a school system employee, I have worked with many students in the past years that fall on the Autism Spectrum. Recent research indicates that 1 in 166 people fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. Such children can be extremely challenging for parents, but parents with the right information can be empowered to help their child improve. This book is an excellent and detailed resource for many of the issues parents face in raising a child on the Autism spectrum. The book begins with a great description of Autism, and is especially useful for parents who are reading their first book on autism. The book moves into more inspirational mode, and discusses the importance of acceptance and a positive attitude in the face of adversity. The book continues with information and strategies on how to cope at the family level (e.g. non-disabled peers relationship with an autistic peer and the challenges for married couples). It also discusses strategies to talk to teens about puberty, the birds and the bees, and proper hygiene. A strength of the book is the detail it goes into. For example, the author discusses strategies in dealing with teens who have sensory issues and don't want to comb their hair, etc... The book also supplies valuable information about transition to high-school and beyond, and future employment. It also educates parents about special education law. I would recommend this book as a great resource for parents of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Helpful stuff.......2006-07-24
"Chantal Sicile-Kira has written a book for parents that does not steer them down an agenda-filled path. She has instead selflessly provided readers with their fullest possible options towards the care of their autistic adolescents. Furthermore, she backs her writing up with testimony from many of the world's most notable people diagnosed along the spectrum. A thorough effort. Parents would be well-served to purchase this book."
Customer Reviews:
Humorous adventurous........2004-03-04
I found myself being able to visualize the desert, fell the heat of the region and Florida mountains that Skelton speaks of. His writing is extrememly visual and you can almost feel the breath of the bad guys on the back of your neck.
Skelton finds the humor and idiosyncrisies in human nature as we try to finagle our way through life. The characters that he has come in contact with through his law enforcement career, has got to make you think that humor is the best medicine. The one thing that will carry you through the day.
I would highly recommend Down on the Border to get a taste of life in the deserts of the South west. You will find that every chapter will make you laugh and wanting to read more.
The illustrations were fantastic and comical and added to the humurous nature of adventures. The introduction with J. Jackson was truely rewarding seeing, as it demostrates Cops helping cops. Their lives and tales parrallel no matter where they are.
They should be rewarded highly for their service. Thank you for making an insane world seem humorous. I enjoyed the laughs.

Book Description
John Lambert's life and career have long deserved this revealing study. The man who made Cromwell Lord Protector in 1653 also stopped him becoming king in 1657; and Lambert was the originator of the Instrument of Government, on which Cromwell's Protectorate was based. Committed to his deeply held, radical beliefs, Lambert first rose to prominence as a dashing cavalry commander in the civil wars of 1642 - 51, and he was a prominent upholder of the power of the New Model Army, particularly in his creation of the Major Generals, who ruled England in 1655. Lambert's refusal to countenance Cromwell as king saw his temporary fall from power, but he emerged after the Protector's death as a possible successor. His radical ideas seemed to threaten even 'his own side', and led to his imprisonment in the Tower in 1660, but he escaped and staged a last desperate republican stand against the return of Charles II. Although Lambert was subsequently convicted of treason, Charles did not have him executed - sure recognition that his character, private actions and beliefs were those of a man who was much more than a military revolutionary. DAVID FARR is head of history at Norwich School.
