A disappointment.......2006-11-12
Hoping to gain some insight into the Soviet - Afghan war, I picked up Bocharov's _Russian Roulette_, thinking that a journalist who spent years covering the war would have something meaningful to share. Instead, the book alternates between "A Journalist's Tale" (Bocharov's experience) and "A Soldier's Tale" (the experience of Soviet soldiers both on the ground and higher up the chain of command.) Neither provided much analysis of the war, its successes or analysis of what was learned. Rather, I found it a rather pednantic recounting of how horrible war is, and its effects on those involved personally.
With that said, Bocharov does a good job of sharing the horrors and costs of war: its destruction of lives and property, the waste of life and resources and the lasting effects it has on those touched by it. If this is of interest to you, then it would be a worthwhile read. However, if, like me, you are searching for something deeper and more specific to the region and the conflict, look elsewhere.
Read the Book .......2006-07-01
I have a strong conviction that if one is about to write a "review" on a book he or she must, a the very least, read the entire book and then offer their opinions. Some reviwers do not do that, some skim... I have read the book and several times I must add. It is a great work in a sense of perseptions of a modern war or conflict (as it is called in the media and politicians). I had no idea how the Soviet soldiers viewed that war nor did I know how the commader of the Soviet contingent viewed it. It is not a book about Soviet military tactics in Afganistan nor is it an adventure story. It is an attempt to analyze a fruitless war and its effect on the people.
A sensitive treatment of the Afghan war from the Soviet side.......2002-09-02
Perhaps I loved the book more because I read it on my recent visit to Afghanistan. Beginning with the first episode in Kabul Hotel, everything seemed so vivid and painful. I was really sorry for those who had to be on both sides in the period of the Soviet occupation, which turned out to be after all the beginning of a much more grave tragedy.
A waste of time.......2002-03-31
A pretty pathetic mix of front line monotony and homeland poetry. The author either smoked way too much dope while in Afganistan or he just lacks any idea of what it was he was trying to get across to the audience. I kicked back and was all set to read what I thought would be a real down to earth description of war in one of the few armpits left in this world. But after about 15 minutes I realised this was another in a long string of Soviet/Afghan let downs. It seems very few, if any, of the soldiers who fought in this war have anything but the most rudimentary idea of how to put it down on paper. Bottom line, if your on a deserted island and this book washes up on shore, go ahead and enjoy it. Just don't part with any cash for it.

Great Photos, but otherwise very disappointing........2004-12-17
The title of any book is an indication of the content and "Top Dive Sites of the World" is a very big claim. Of course, any personal selection claiming "the best of" will always be subjective. My list will be different from yours and neither of us is either right or wrong - it is simply a matter of personal choice coupled with our own diving experiences.
This book is laid out in 7 general areas of the World; The Caribbean, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, Indo Pacific and Pacific. Straight away, as we enter the Caribbean, we find two of the world's most outstanding dive destinations are not even mentioned in passing. Not only is Belize (home of the world's second largest Barrier Reef "and" the Great Blue Hole) not even mentioned, the country itself is not even shown on this publisher's map of the world. Next up, the "Atlantic Ocean" is reduced to Scapa Flow and the Canary Islands. The Mediterranean is confined to Sardinia alone - and once again countries such as Malta do not even appear on the map. Predictably, the Red Sea includes the Thistlegorm - but not the Rosalie Moller, which many divers regard as a much better shipwreck.
Of course I could go on about what is missing from the remainder of the book - but the point is made. Too many of the world's acknowledged "Top" dive sites and destinations are missing from this book to allow it's title of "Top Dive Sites of the World" to go unchallenged. "My favourite dives from around the World" would have been a more honest title.
My second criticism is content. The text is not well written and, for example, the section on Scapa Flow tells us nothing whatsoever about any specific shipwreck - and "shipwrecks" are the very reason why divers go there in the first place! It is just an overview of the Flow which takes up less than 2 pages of text. Elsewhere, such outstanding shipwrecks as Egypt's Thistlegorm (and a whole book has been written about that particular wreck!), is reduced to a few words.
In summary, a good book for pretty pictures but these tend to mask an otherwise disappointing book.

Book Description
A shocking, fascinating account of one of the greatest espionage scandals of our time. Ann Blackman and Elaine Shannon reveal the truth about Robert Hanssen and his 15 years of exceptionally destructive espionage. They brilliantly explore why Hanssen decided to betray his family, his church and his country, and how he got away with it.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible Traitor!.......2007-03-19
"The Spy Next Door" is an astonishing easy reading story about a common man with an uncommon ability to elude. Robert Hanssen's 25 year job at the FBI gave him access to carefully guarded national security secrets. Ann Blackman and Elaine Shannon are investigative reporters that give a biography of a man whose life is unbelievable, yet true and amazing.
The "Spy Next Door" page turner includes his life from ostracized child to super spy for the Soviets. The only son of a Chicago Cop, he never received his father's approval, was a high school misfit, who developed deep resentments. On the surface, Bob never made a big deal about anything, but he didn't like surprises and he didn't like being forgotten. He was smart and knew by developing a facade of normalcy - he played the boring man next door. Beneath his shell of normalcy he built his dual lives - "lawful" FBI agent and Soviet Spy; "faithful" husband and playboy; and "loyal Catholic" and aesthetic. He kept an arms length from reality so he could chase an exciting game of cat and mouse. He dropped clues - almost daring people to catch him or pay better attention.
What amazed me is that he could have gotten away with it. Why did he take the risk of reactivating? There was little chance of the FBI catching him as long as he stayed dormant. Hanssen's espionage has little to do with spying and much to do with emotional wants. He is an arrogant man harboring resentments and needed "respect" and friendships from an enemy that laughed at his naive requests for little money and yet giving them key intelligence - causing deaths of our agents - so they would pay attention and he could get retribution - telling everyone "I will show you!"
By blending in, being "common" - no one paid attention to him. The betrayal to this country is enormous.
Hey.......2006-07-24
I found this book very informative i was able to read it super fast a must read
A Great Story.......2003-02-04
This book was a good read. It seemed to be more thoroughly researched(although there are still open questions) and was not simply rushed out by two greedy authors capitalizing on recent events.
I understand that Bob and Bonnie Hansen's position was not represented in this book. I would've liked more concrete evidence rather than author speculation, but that is implausible in this case.
With the amount of research and time that was invested in this book, I am reasonably satisfied with the result and give this book 4 stars
Interesting, but thorough?.......2003-01-09
I have to rate this book at 3 stars. Why? At only 230+ pages, I have to wonder if the book wasn't a rush to judgement and was not as thoroughly researched as it could have been. Basically, the book is a good, quick read and gives the reader an overall view of Bob Hanssen and his exploits as a spy. However, there are a few things that make me believe the book could have been better.
First of all, there was a lengthy dissertation about Opus Dei. Shannon never really adequately explained how the Opus Dei may have contributed to Hanssen's behavior as a spy. Secondly, she mentioned his interest in internet pornography. Well...so how did that affect Hanssen's behavior? She doesn't explain that, so one wonders what was the point of mentioning his interest in pornography in the first place. Third, as another reader mentioned, there are no bibliographies nor an index, nor are there any photos. I have to question Shannon's notes if she doesn't reference them.
Nevertheless, the book is worth a read. I think the book would have benefitted from a better psychoanalysis of Hanssen. ...
Very Interesting.......2003-01-03
I was intrigued by the information in this book.I wanted more detail and a clearer understanding. I remember searching for this book and waiting for it to arrive. I was a little disappointed that it was not better, having seen several interviews with the authors.
I have found that "Spy" by David Wise is a more detailed and better written book. I believe Robert Hanssen and his family cooperated with Mr Wise.

Customer Reviews:
This a wonderful book for making presents!!.......2007-09-05
I was hesitant to order this book due to negative reviews.
Some stated that the patterns were too simple,,,and the bags had a "homeade" instead of a" handmade "look.
I really am glad that I went ahead and ordered this anyway!
I have a lot of stash yarn ,both in 100% wool and some trendier yarns that I have been hanging on to for too long.
I wanted to use some of these yarns to make some Christmas gifts,,,, and this book TRULY fits the need I have!
This year I am making most of my presents ,which is why I ordered this in late summer ( so I am not knitting frantically at the last minute!)
I would rather be enjoying friends and family during the Christmas season,, (rather than shopping at the mall),,,,so,, this was an excellent purchase for me.
I think this is going to be fun trying to design each purse I knit to the fit the style of the lady I will be knitting for... ( This includes all ages from 2- 81!)
I can do this by mixing and matching yarns to get a one of a kind look.
One purse I made( for myself) took me all of 2 hours (!!) ~ from start to finish,I used the yarn I had on hand ~which is the best part of it all!
I did line my purse (which was very easy to do,) as I wanted pockets for cell phone, car keys etc ,,,however, this is a personal preference and not truly necessary ~
I also added buttons from my grandmothers old button jar.
I absolutely love this purse!
Yes, the patterns are relatively easy, but,,,what in world is wrong with that??? To be honest, I picked this book for just that reason!( I can save the cables and intarsia for a different project than felting!)
Since I have been bitten with the felting bug ..I will probably get more in depth with it after the holidays ~ but for now the focus is on presents~ and oh what LOVELY presents these bags will make!
I have already ordered a few more books on felting,( the author's next book being one of them) ~
I think most knitters could quite easily make changes to their purse to make it anyway you want to ,,,,,, to use leather purse handles and other hardwear if you want!!!! These patterns leave a lot of room for designing on your own.( By the way a great resource for leather handles and hardware lies in your local thrift shop where you can get these items for next to nothing!)
I think this is fantastic book for gift making , it helps keep my costs down a bit and I am giving something that the recipients really do use!
I have had had many compliments on purses I have made for myself.
Using a little imagination,,,,you could knit and felt up some really nice bags~ These designs are the kind of bags that will be well recieved as presents,, and truly get noticed!
a knitter's "must".......2007-07-05
If you love to knit felted bags , this book is a must. The patterns can serve as a model and you can take off and create your own designs.
Pursenalities.......2007-05-18
I have enjoyed using this book. The purses are cute and the patterns are easy to follow.
Amazon bugs me.......2007-05-12
I have ordered from Amazon before but probably won't again. Have had trouble getting the free S & H when an order is over $25.00. This recent order was just as frustrating. Wanted to order 2 items and could not get both to go in the shopping cart. The 2 items would have totaled over $25 to qualify for free S & H. So, finally gave up and just ordered the one book. That is all just stupid, so will stop at a book store when out of town or order from a different source. The book is nice but could have bought it almost any place.
I love the bag I made!.......2006-11-21
I knitted 2 different patterns from this book during the first year I learned to knit and both came out beautiful. Instructions are easy to follow and supplies needed to complete projects are reasonable. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in making a felted bag. Patterns range from basic to challenging (challenging for me, anyway but I can't wait to try the challenging patterns!)

The Hydrangea Journal is the perfect size to carry anywhere, the pages are soft white instead of bright white, the lines are not too far apart and not too close together. The journal handles nicely, and the price is just right. Great for daily journal keeping, writer's notes, or subject journals. Highly recommended.

Balanced with a mother's perspective and an acclaimed doctor's experience, this book gives parents advice on:*Finding the right therapy and therapist *Negotiating with school boards, teachers, and language specialists *Speech exercises to do at home with a child. The Late Talker is the first book of its kind, providing effective, practical answers to the questions every concerned parent asks.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Resource!!.......2007-10-13
I can't seem to locate my review from when this book was first released, but I will attempt to remember what I posted.
This book covers nearly every aspect of the delayed speech journey. As with any special needs child, the results of any type of intervention will vary. This includes therapy, medication, or supplements. My son was helped immensely by the Essential Fatty Acids. I recommend them to moms of all special needs children, along with Dr. Stordy's book, THE LCP SOLUTION: The Remarkable Nutritional Treatment for ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia I saw a dramatic difference in my sons' speech in three weeks. This was using a higher dosage than is recommended on the bottle. I know many success stories and several who didn't have dramatic results. This is not surprising as special needs children respond in individual ways to all interventions.
My son has several diagnoses and one is Speech Apraxia. While one of the authors (Lisa Geng) is the mom of an Apraxic son, there is much helpful material beyond the Apraxia diagnosis.
All of the specific information regarding red flags, insurance, interventions, or therapies are applicable to any speech delay/disorder. Handling the frustrations or negative people are applicable to any speech diagnosis.
Due to my son's medical history, he was delayed in all areas. His therapy from birth changed due to development and actually didn't change much once his speech was considered a disorder and no longer just delayed.
I highly recommend this book for anyone with a child who has delayed speech!
Find Another Book/This Isn't Helpful Material.......2007-07-14
This book put a lot of fear into me, rather than be helpful. The premise of the book seems to be that if your child isn't speaking as well as the charts say they should, then you need to get your child involved in INTENSIVE therapy several times a week ASAP or you run the risk of your child becoming very depressed and they may even become suicidal!! I'm sorry, but that's the LAST thing a parent needs to hear, especially when they're probably already anxious about their child's development or else they wouldn't be reading this book. There are much better books out there! Also, it had a whole chapter devoted to how fish oil capsules have helped numerous kids speak better... and although I haven't researched this issue and perhaps there might be some truth in it, it certainly isn't as the author makes it seem-He gives several examples of these kids who weren't saying ANY words and then all of a sudden they take fish oil and within a few DAYS they are speaking several words-yeah, right!!! I highly doubt that. Though there is no doubt that fatty acids are good for you and important, but they're not miracle makers. Anyhow, that's my take on this book.
learning to talk.......2007-07-13
I have friends with a three year old who doesn't talk. They said this book was very helpful in giving help to the child and directing them where to go to also get help.
Wonderful, Helpful book........2007-05-24
I am currently in school for Speech Language Pathology (speech therapy) and this book covers in the first few chapters much of what was covered in my first semester in school. It takes hard to understand information and makes it very clear and concise. I wish that this would have been the book we read instead of the textbook we were assigned, as this one makes more sense!
Overall, a great book that everyone can get something out of, but it is especially geared toward children with apraxia and more than a mild delay in speech. However, I think the first couple of chapters are a must read for anyone with a child with even the most mild of speech delays.
Above all...if you suspect a delay, get your child tested! EI is a free screening for everyone, regardless of income! The earlier you start, the better the outcome. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!!
The One Light In A Dark Journey.......2007-03-29
This book has been the one light for us in a dark journey of finding out how to help our son who has Down. Syndrome and Apraxia. Thank God we had a talented speech therapist who first diagnosed the problem. Since we have had an up-hill battle with therapists and even family members who don't understand that our son understands everything said to him but can't respond as he would like and the frustration that brings...
This has some wonderful how to examples of how to go about getting help and how to cope with feelings.
It is the top of my list of a number of books for help with Apraxia
Thank You
Book Description
Jack Goldstein and the CalArts Mafia is anchored by Jack's reflections, dramatized by Hertz into first person narratives, of the early days of CalArts and the last days of Chouinard; the New York artworld; the trials and tribulations of finding and maintaining success; his inter-personal relationships; and his disappearance from the art scene. They are complemented by the dramatized first person narratives of Jack's friends, including John Baldessari, Troy Brauntuch, Rosetta Brooks, Jean Fisher, Robert Longo, Matt Mullican, and James Welling. There are provocative portraits of many well known personalities of the 80s, including Mary Boone, David Salle, and Helene Winer, all working at a time when "the competitive spirit was strong and often brutal, caring little about anything but oneself and making lots of money." Has anything changed?

tells it like it is.......2004-06-08
This book is a must read for any artist, it is a realistic picture of the art world the way it was and the way things are done today. There is a poignancy in Jack Goldstein, and it is very moving.
