This hysterical collection of stories of actual crimes committed by clumsy crooks and fumbling felons will have you laughing out loud at painfully dumb attempts at crime. Illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
stupid laughter!.......2006-10-02
Americas dumbest criminals is full of stupid laughter! It has a bunch of little stories put together in one book! One of my favorite ones is about a guy that goes into a bank and tries to rob it but the bank calls the police and the guy starts running away from the police but they still caught him because he was robbing the bank at night and he was wearing light up shoes so the police could see him running!
Lame.......2006-03-31
Perhaps the problem is in the presentation. Stories like these are better told by a witty reporter than printed in a book. While many of the stories were entertaining, I felt like many of them fell flat. Some of the stories were mere coincidences that lacked humor. Others just did not seem to fit under the title of the book. An undercover cop suckering a drug dealer is only amusing so many times.
I did gain some enjoyment from this book. Because many of the stories are based in the Chicago area, the proximity made that stories more relevant to me. Aside from these stories, I could have lived without this book.
Hilarious!!!!.......2005-09-29
I never cease to be amazed by how stupid some people can be. These stories literally had me laughing so hard that I dropped the book on the floor. I've read several different collections about dumb criminals but this one is by far the best. This book had me cracking up. If you have not yet read this book, pick up a copy because it is well worth it!
Obsolete and objectionable .......2005-04-17
This book delivers what it promises, but I'm not sure that it promises anything special.
It is essentially a collection of humorous cop stories, told to the authors by policemen who, by dint of their occupation, always seem to have an amusing anecdote or two.
Most of the 100 stories are amusing, a few are very funny, and a fair number just fall flat. While browsing through this book is good for a chuckle, I think you could probably get the same exact chuckle by browsing through the internet for similar subject matter.
Even though this is a light-hearted book that is more concerned with entertaining the reader than making a statement, I still couldn't help but be bothered by the politics of the authors, and even more so by the brashness with which they assert those politics.
The introduction relates an anecdote about the authors trying to get the members of a police station to work with them. They explain to the police chief that they think that criminals are glorified in shows like COPS. I had to reread this to make sure I had understood it correctly. COPS glamorizes criminals? In my experience, COPS usually makes criminals look subhuman. Anyhow, the police chief agrees to work with the authors on the condition that they make the criminals look like "coldhearted dumbasses," and show the police force as being "professional at all times." I was shocked to hear that the authors were basically agreeing to cover up any professional misconduct they encountered, and to make the criminals look as bad as possible. And they were bragging about this bargain in the introduction!
Looked at in this light, some of the stories seem a little sinister. The last one in the book tells about an escaped convict who was attempting to hide from a search party. The convict mistakenly thinks he is backing into a hog-shed, when in reality he is backing through a single wall, and the surrounding policemen come up on his rear end poking into the air, with the convict apparently thinking he is hidden from view. There's a quote from a cop that says they "didn't know whether to turn the dogs loose on him, read him his rights, or just give him a good swift kick." Supposedly, they read him his rights, but given the deal that the authors made in the beginning, why should the reader assume that the man wasn't subjected to either of the other two (highly illegal) options?
This is just one of many examples of the "punchline" being that an apprehended suspect gets physically hurt in some way. In one case, after a man (nonviolent offender) is taken into custody and handcuffed, a couple of dogs attack him, biting him several times before the arresting officer could drive the dogs off. The authors write that this is a stellar example of taking a bite out of crime. Har he har har!
Joking about physically abusing a prisoner just isn't that funny to me, and it would be even less funny to the people who are facing long jail terms as a result of their crimes. Just because a person has been convicted of a crime and is paying the price doesn't mean that they deserve our ridicule, especially not mean-spirited ridicule that is specifically designed to make them look like coldhearted dumbasses.
Those political objections aside, this book is somewhat amusing to flip through, but as I said, you could find the same type of material on the web for free.
America's Dumbest Criminals.......2003-11-21
This was a pretty good book, very amusing. It was about dumb criminals doing, of course, dumb things. It is too bad that all crimes aren't as funny or easy to solve. One of the stories in this book was titled BAD BRIBES. this story started when a man drove through a red traffic light right in front of a cop, if this wasn't enough to get the motorist into the book, when the officer pulled the motorist over, the motorist offered him a massage as a bribe, it turns out that the motorist was a masseur. fortunately the officer wasn't in the mood, maybe the gentleman just rubbed the officer the wrong way.

Little Gem.......2002-11-06
Emily has a real knack for portraying the personalities of her horse children. Reading the book, I found myself wanting to visit and meet Lilli, Maria, Diamahn Lil, and all. For anyone who has owned a horse, or who has longed to own a horse, this book will be a real pleasure.
Two things bothered me though. Emily did not tell us enough about herself. I would love to know her approximate age and more about her human family. Also, I thought the 9/11 information was distracting, and made the story too "current event". If those two pages are deleted, the book will regain a noncontemporary feel, and should be enjoyable for many years to come.
I would love to read a sequel.
Dear Dolly.......2002-11-06
This is definately a book of a true Horse lover,I want to visit her and Summerwind Farms she makes real farm life come alive for me,took me back to my childhood.
I was raised on a farm in the state of Virginia with horses, cows, pigs etc.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has a love for animals be it horses dogs or cats the true love for the animals comes through.
This book also shows the care and love you must give to our 4 leg friends.
I shall look forward to another book by Emily Bridges in the future.
A REAL Horse Book.......2002-10-28
It's was very refreshing to read a REAL horse book! Being horse owners ourselves, we could relate with both humor and sympathy to the ups and downs of horse ownership! Even if you don't have horses, this book will delight and intrigue. Can't wait for the next one!
Refreshing.......2002-10-26
Loved how she followed her dream. This book will make someone who is not a "horse lover" want to be one! Full of useful advice!
IT'S ABOUT MORE THAN HORSES... A Great Gift Book!.......2002-10-23
I really enjoyed DEAR DOLLY. Emily exposes her strengths and weaknesses in a humorous way, and in opening her farm and heart to us, we are offered hope in our own personal challenges. My 80 year old mother(who is terrified of horses) LOVED this book as well, it appeals to young and old, and will make a PERFECT gift book.

Detail is the key!.......2006-04-14
Accessorizing the Bride is one of the most detailed and comprehensive coffee-table books I have ever seen. The author is meticulous in her description of each garment and article. The top-notch photography brings detail to life. This book is a must read for collectors, historians, or anyone interested in the evolution of wedding apparel.
A lovely retrospective.......2005-10-12
Norma Shephard's book is a beautifully nostalgic tribute to the wedding fashions and trends of generations past and present. It is as delightful as it is informative.
Get Out Your Hanky .......2005-10-12
Sentimental, enlightening and gorgeous. I especially liked the non-traditional wedding gowns and bridal stories.
REFERENCE OR KEEPSAKE?.......2005-09-12
Readers may find it difficult to believe that author Norma Shephard has such a magnificent collection of wedding accessories. And then to see them photographed so beautifully is almost beyond the realm of imagination. But it is true. Most artifacts exhibited in Accessorizing the Bride, Vintage Wedding Finery Through the Decades are part of the Mobile Millinery Museum's Wedding Collection and yes, she did all the photography in her tiny Burlington, Ontario studio.
What makes this coffee table book so fascinating? It may be the detailed pictures of fabrics, styles, hues, beads, sequins and lace. Or it may be the memories and dreams that it ignites as we flip from era to era and maybe for the first time experience what grandmother or greatgran or even her mother may have worn on her wedding day.
If a bride-to-be is lucky enough to view this book before she's selected her gown and accessories, it may help her decide about a veil, train, headpiece, waistline or hemline.
And for the many ladies who donated or loaned gowns to the Mobile Millinery Museum's Wedding Collection, the book takes on a magical quality of pride and appreciation to know that their wedding finery is being admired all around the world.
What Shephard shows she also tells and her apparent wealth of knowledge goes beyond fashion. Between the lines of real-life stories, anecdotes and progression of style, she subtly integrates the social history of women's movements, traditions, issues and advancements.
Collectors, historians, curators and fashion aficionados will devour this tome of information and illustration, but Accessorizing the Bride, Vintage Wedding Finery Through the Decades offers more than that. While many wedding books feature gowns of celebrities, this issue credits everyday women like you and me with the ability to select, design or create that special gown for that very special day.
Whether chosen as a reference or as a keepsake, this is one high quality coffee table book that will be opened over and over for second, third, fourth and more perusals.

Book Description
This is a book for the home rose grower who lives in Florida or a semi-tropical climate similar to that in the state of Florida, where the soil and temperature conditions are very different from those experienced in the northern section of the United States. This is not a picture book. It is a how-to informational text book on the special needs for having success with growing roses in Florida. The material in this book is the result of the author's experience gained, while professionally caring for 300 gardens as "ROSES" rose garden service in central Florida during a 12 year period.
Book Description
When girlfriends Stephanie Triplett and Sara Ellington realized they were both pregnant and their babies were due only two weeks apart, they began e-mailing each other constantly. Throughout their individual journeys, both women discovered many aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and especially motherhood that no one ever seemed to talk about. Stephanie and Sara had both read every book on pregnancy and childbirth they could get their hands on, so why weren't they prepared for the roller-coaster ride they were about to embark on? Why hadn't anyone ever given them the real truth about being a mommy before?!
The Mommy Chronicles is a candid, honest, and sometimes irreverent view into the lives and emotions of these two new mothers. In intimate and often hilarious detail, the authors share their own diverse, as well as universal experiences, of motherhood. Listen in on their conversations as they laugh, cry, rage, and celebrate their first year as mothers. Labor and delivery, postpartum depression, career choices, daycare dilemmas, husbands who don't get itit's all here, presented in an entertaining, easy-to-read format.
Customer Reviews:
for white women only???.......2006-09-18
I'm shocked at the reviewer who titled her review "for white women only" and called this book racist simply because the authors discuss the changes occurring in their bodies due to pregnancy - such as their nipples turning brown. That discussion determines whether someone is racist or not? Come on! This is a really cute book - I think we can all relate, to some degree, to some things that both authors went through.
No, this book won't cure cancer, but let's keep things in perspective ladies - ladies of ALL colors.
I wish I had this book four years ago!.......2006-04-20
I had heard about this book and thought I'd read it, expecting it to be humorous. It is in some spots. It was helpful in some spots too, especially with post-partum depression, which is what I had suffered. However, I did not find the other author who did not have the blues to being very supportive. I wanted to tell her that there are some women out there who just cannot take drugs for anything (I am one of them!) as it provides adverse reactions and end up complicating the problem. Another fact that she may not be aware of is that being on birth control pills also compound post-partum depression. Once I got off the birth control, my depression eased and life became a lot better after that. I totally related to Stephanie, the author who suffered the blues after giving birth to her daughter.
It was very interesting to read about Sara's entry back into the workforce and how she struggled with the issues of working. She had admitted that she didn't want to give up her job for several reasons, one of which being she wanted to be intellectually stimulated, the second of which being she didn't want to give up the lifestyle she and her husband has become accustomed to, and thirdly, she just loved her job. She made no apologies and she detailed her struggles as well as her joys.
It was interesting too to see how they relate to their husbands after giving birth and the realities of their world have changed. They covered everything from breast-feeding, disciplining, their relationships with their husbands, housework and jobs. It was interesting for the most part and some parts of it was hilarious but there are some parts of it where you just groaned because it was just too much whining going on. I suppose they should be forgiven for whining because who doesn't whine to their friends? There have been times though I wanted to tell them to appreciate their blessings. There are lots of women out there who want children and can't have them. There are women out there in different situations than they are and life isn't always easy or even pleasant. And they do recognize that. It's just hard to remember that sometimes when you're smack in the middle of mothering woes.
If you're looking for a honest book on conversations between two women, this book would be a good one. It is interesting, well-written and sometimes, thoughtful. At least, it will prompt conversation among other women and their friends.

A good book...for white women only.......2006-04-09
I read the first 20 or so pages of this book. Sure it was ok, these women aren't that funny. They kind of bore me after a while. The one thing I should mention about this book is that if you are not a white woman, you will not appreciate the way these women call brown nipples 'disgusting'. They have one conversation about how their bodies will change, and how they wish things that are pink will stay pink. Then that's where the 'ewww- brown nipples are disgusting!" comes in. I hope I will stop at least 1,000 women from buying this book. I can't believe their editor let them put that in the book, that is kind of racist. I am so glad I read that part before it was too late to return it! I hope you found this useful.
Allyson in Woodstock.......2006-02-14
I found The Mommy Chronicles hilarious! I wish it had been out when I was pregnant with my 6 year old. I could totally relate to sooo- many of the things that Stephanie and Sara talked about in the book. It was comforting to know that I was not the only one to have some of the same feelings that they adressed. I am very fortunate to personally know Stephanie and her family. She is just as delightful in person,as she is in her book. I anxiously await her next book, due out in about a year. Until then, I continue to buy the book,as a gift to all friends when they announce a pregnancy!
Hilarious information for all moms!.......2005-06-12
Got a chance to meet the authors yesterday at a book signing. They are witty and very funny. This book is full of great information and laughs for moms with kids of all ages. It is information that I wish I had when I was pregnant with my children. I would recommend it for an entertaining read any mom.

ASIN: 0940322773
Release Date: 2001-09-30 |
Book Description
In this delightful memoir, Jean Renoir, the director of such masterpieces of the cinema as Grand Illusion and The Rules of the Game, tells the life story of his father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, the great Impressionist painter. Recounting Pierre-Auguste's extraordinary career, beginning as a painter of fans and porcelain, recording the rules of thumb by which he worked, and capturing his unpretentious and wonderfully engaging talk and personality, Jean Renoir's book is both a wonderful double portrait of father and son and, in the words of the distinguished art historian John Golding, it "remains the best account of Renoir, and, furthermore, among the most beautiful and moving biographies we have."
Includes 12 pages of color plates and 18 pages of black and white images.

Two for the Price of One: More Than an Artist's Bio--A Detailed Historial Portrait of 19th C. France.......2007-09-16
A biography written by a child of someone famous often carries more than one burden, similar to the responsibility or encumbrance of the overshadowing parental fame. However, in filmmaker Jean Renoir's lovingly detailed remembrances of his Impressionist painter father, the reader gleans more than a timeline of an artist's rise to prominence. The author shares a richly detailed account of life in a culture that--in most areas of France save for Paris--was still foremostly agrarian. In this burgeoning Industrial world, Renoir tells of the rise of his father's art and the changing cultural behaviors, shifting societal patterns and troubling questions within that framework.
Beginning at Louis-Philippe's "July Monarchy" (1830-1848)-- generally seen as a period during which the haute bourgeoisie was dominant and the 1840's which saw financial crisises and bad harvests with an ensuing economic depression--we are reminded of the general and specific trends vis-à-vis how they affected the Renoir family's world. Curiously descriptive, this was a world of street oil lamps and chamber pots; anesthesia was not yet invented (nor any antiseptics); butchers slaughtered the animals on site in the back of the shop; great debates about the inferior railroad system and the overall safety of locomotives were waged (could a pregnant woman harm her unborn child by moving a such great speeds? Did the smoke and soot emitted hinder crops in nearby fields from growing). Adding to the vivid and graphic storytelling of French life are vignettes of the senior Renoir's dealings with fellow Impressionists and art dealers as well as his painting process behind some of his masterpieces. Family life, the defining touchstone of the artist as a man, is shared in humorous and matter-of-fact style ("My mother brought a great deal to my father: peace of mind, children whom he could paint; and a good excuse not to have to go out in the evening.") This book, which was first published in the mid-1950's, affords the reader a complete picture of the life of a great artist during a time of vicissitude and excitement in all facets of French society.
An affectionate rememberance!.......2006-04-22
An affectionate remembrance of Renoir by his son, concentrating the years up to the turn of the century.
Renoir considered himself an artisan rather than an artist, disliked anything artificial, from margarine to ready-to-wear clothes, had among his friends artists, and musicians who are household names today. "It is when you have lost your teeth that you can buy the best beefsteak" he would say, and considering that he became more infirm with age, this truism affected him no less than the rest of us.
Therapy.......2003-12-28
We adopted "Renoir, My Father" as bedside reading while my wife was recovering from hip surgery, and (aside, perhaps, from "Goodnight, Moon,") I can't imagine better therapy. This is odd, in a way: Claude was an old man (and in pain) when Jean got to know him, and Jean was an old man when he finally brought his recollectios together. You might expect cranky, but nothing of the sort: it's a book full of sunny afterglow. Every parent would hope to be rememnbered so well.
The book might take a bit of getting used to: Jean has his own pace and his own way of telling his story. We did it in small doses and I'm not certain yet that I quite catch the rhythm. None of the rough edges have been smoothed off which, come to think of it, is just as Claude would have wanted: Jean speaks with his own voice. You have to listen well, but you know that the voice is nobody else's.
I suppose it helps to know a bit about the Impressionists to enjoy it all, but I can't say I know all that much, and I didn't feel impaired. Anyway, God bless Google: more than once, when Jean talked about a painting or a subject, I key-clicked my way to an image and completed (as it were) the picture.
Kudos also to NYRB (this time) for producing what it does not always produce: a finished physical specimen The paper feels like quality; the binding is sturdy, and there is a small but satisfying selection of pictures, both colored and black-and-white. There is even an index of sorts (I assume from the original translator) but it is patchy and incomplete. That last is a shortcoming, but forgivable in light of the book's other virtues. In the NYRB firmament, this is surely a star.
Beautiful.......2002-02-19
Impressionism is my favorite style of painting so I was really enchanted with this biography. Written by Renoir's middle son, Jean, Renoir, My Father not only gives us an intimate look at the life of Auguste Renoir, it gives us an intimate look at the Paris of Renoir's day as well.
As we get to know Renoir we get to know his contemporaries, too. Jean Renoir writes about Monet, Cezanne, Manet, Sisley and many other great artists. We learn many "little known" facts, such as Monet's penchant for lace and his "artful" way with the ladies.
Paris really comes alive in this book. Many of the places Renoir writes about still exist and can be visited today. This book makes any art lover's trip to Paris more meaningful whether he's a Renoir fan or not.
When reading this book, one must remember that this is not a "run of the mill" biography. This is a son writing about the father he adored. The portrait we are given is very intimate, detailed and loving. It's obvious that Jean Renoir adored his father, just as Auguste Renoir adored his family.
Ultimately, this book is a beautiful tribute from a loving son to a father who was one of history's consummate artists. If you have any interest at all in art, this is one book you simply must not pass up. The last page alone will break your heart.
A Vivid Portait.......2000-05-04
Renoir was far more than one of the world's greatest artists. He was an adventurer, a family man, a man who held interesting views on just about every subject under the sun, and finally, in his later years, a martyr to life. Although this book was written by Renoir's middle son, Jean, it is as vibrant and alive as if Renoir, himself, had just written the words in his own hand. Through this book we learn how the Renoir family left its roots in Limoges and moved to Paris. We read of Renoir's early years as a painter of porcelain and how and why he became an artist, more specifically, an Impressionist. We learn of Renoir's marriage to Aline Charigot of Essoyes, the birth of his three sons and his move to the south of France. Some of the most interesting sections of the book deal with Renoir's feelings about the effect of light on a painting and why he needed to paint in a "natural" setting. Also, most interesting are the chapters on the birth of Impressionism and Renoir's relationships with the other artists of the time, such as Monet, Manet, Sisley and Cezanne, just to name a few. Lovingly and charmingly written, this book truly brings Renoir to life and makes him accessible to all. Absolutely a must for anyone with even a passing interest in art or artists!
