Tokyo Vertigo is part travel book, part hallucination. Stephen Barber takes the reader on an extraordinary journey through the myriad districts of contemporary Tokyo, from the neon nightscape of Shinjuku to the artificial Daiba Island in Tokyo Bay, and reinvents the city as he goes along, evoking its unique ferment of sex, consumerism, and rampant visual imagery. Free of the tired old cliches about Japanese culture (no Pokemon, no ikebana), Tokyo Vertigo captures the energy and extremity of Tokyo now, recognising that the city, even more than the book, is the effect of constant and delirious reinvention. Along with Roland Barthes's The Empire of Signs and Chris Marker's film Sunless, this is one of the few truly original and essential meditations on Tokyo by a Western visitor.

I thought this book was going to be about the underbelly of Tokyo. Boy was I wrong. The book is only the means for the author to vomit out verbose convoluted phrases on his perceptions on yhe different districts in Tokyo. There is absolutely no information on these districts.He treats them more like living things that suck away the lives of their inhabitants. That is fine, but why is that? The author never answeres this. He seems to be the type that likes listening to himself use big words repeatedly. Well he does that here, but writes them not speak them. The only good quality the book has is a decent description of the work by choreographer/dancer Tatsumi Hijikata. Don't read this book it is a waste of time and energy.

Truth is stranger than fiction!.......2006-02-25

This autobiographical account of Robert E. Burns' amazing double escape from a Georgia chain gang in the 1920s seems like a made up tale for Indiana Jones or some such movie hero. The events of his escape, his rise from a laborer to one of the most prominent citizens of Chicago as well as his return to the chain gang are incredible. And he escapes again! The second escape is even more amazing than the first, though he never is able to return to his ideal life or love in Chicago. The very good film version made in 1932 doesn't begin to cover the exciting details of the book, but it makes a good companion piece. The new, modern, well researched introduction, fills in the details that the reader will wonder about at the book's conclussion. It is suggested that the introduction material be read last.

True story of a man's quest for freedom.......2004-12-19

The story of Robert Burns is an amazing one. Told in the first person, he recounts his life after service in World War I, being sent to a Georgia chain gang, and escaping successfully twice. Although at times he seems to be playing for your sympathy, it is still nonetheless an excellent true story of a man dealing with harsh conditions and overcoming them. The end of the book doesn't tell what happens to him. In a nutshell, he is caught and sent to Georgia and is before a committee, which brings the man he originally robbed in the store. The man says Burns should not be imprisoned and he should be free. Burns is released and lives the rest of his life as a successful businessman.

For nearly a century after the Civil War, the State of Georgia treated its convicted felons harshly, first leasing them to private companies and later working them on county roads. Working the convicts relentlessly under sometimes brutal conditions, the authorities abandoned reformation and exploited cheap labor. Brooklyn-born Burns returned from World War I a misfit veteran. Reduced to desperation and robbery, he was arrested in 1922 and sentenced to six to ten years on the Georgia chain gang. After suffering torturous treatment and escaping, Burns wrote his story in 1931.

There is no doubt that Burns' most pressing reason for writing his book was to garner sympathy for himself. And for the most part, the book is well written and accomplishes the job of setting forth the harsh reality of life on a chain gang. There are a few spots in the book where, in my opinion, the author's words do not have the "ring of truth", but over all you will come away with the obvious conclusion that definite prison reform was needed in a drastic way. The institution of the chain gang was really nothing more than legalized slavery--only much harsher. In defense of the brutal chain gang system of Georgia, I simply say that every person in that time was aware of the harsh punishment that was meted out in the south and elsewhere; people knew that if they committed a crime, then there was the possibility of being consigned to a chain gang. So even though a person cannot help but to sympathize with Burns' experiences, it has to be said that ultimately he gambled and he lost.

I would be suffering if I had not read this book.......2007-09-25

This is one of those books that improved my life.

If your boyfriends or ex-boyfriends always try to guess what you think, always give in when you have a fight, and you take that for granted, this is a book for you. In my case, it helped me to understand my boyfriends who do not do these for me. It does not mean they care less. Those are typical things guys do, and it is just the difference between men and women. I recommended my boyfriend to read this book too. Initially he was skeptical, but after he read it, he thought it definitely helped especially on what to do when I am upset. It helped our relationship.

If you are a girl and have problems dealing with your female colleague, or female bosses, this book could help too. It helps me understand women's perspective better from a third person's angle. This book helped me to communicate better with my boss, especially when she was angry or grumpy. Apologize first, let her understand she has the right to be angry, and then explain or not. It worked like magic.

This is an excellent book that helps a lot to manage the many challenges of the dating process. I recommend it as well as I recommned Women are from Mars and Men are from Venus.

A WORTHY READ.......2007-07-28

This could have saved me SO MUCH heartache had I known the difference between men and women when I first started dating. Even though I had brothers I had NO IDEA that they are all hardwired to see the world differently. Could have spared myself and my partners a lot of arguments and hurt feelings.

Gray's best book.......2007-02-20

I love this book. Well not the whole book, but the first half anyway. Gray has a view of relationships that is right on target. And he can say it with great skill in about 100 pages. Then he either repeats himself or climbs out on the edge. But no one is better at making sense of this subject and in this book he's at his best. Expect to stop after every chapter and say "Oh, that's why she acted that way." So fellas, please read this book and the Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus book. The rest of his writtings are just the same stuff rewritten, which is pretty disappointing considering the great insight Gray has. And guys - when your done with this book, read The Rules. Between this book and The Rules, you'll understand dating and women much more than women want you to.

helpful, valuable advice for people dating or in relationships.......2007-02-01

This Mars & Venus book builds on the information in the original John Gray book, and applies it to how men and women behave differently once they begin dating.

This book explains the five stages of dating (attraction, uncertainty, exclusivity, intimacy, engagement). Of particular value is the explanation of the anxiety-ridden second stage "uncertainty." Having read this book, the "uncertainty" period of dating is much easier to weather. Not only is it a facet of nearly every single relationship, it is a critical and necessary part to building the relationship. Another important idea from this book is that all relationships go through these five stages (or skip them at their peril), and that most relationships will cycle through these stages several times until the fifth stage, engagement, is reached.

This book helps women slow down and have more realistic expectations at each stage, and helps men understand the behaviors women may be exhibiting at each stage. It also reinforces an idea introduced in "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" that men play the role of giving, and women play the role of receiving, and that this honors our biological/evolutionary drives and simplifies a lot of the anxiety surrounding who should do what in a relationship. Women are encouraged to slow down and recieve, and the book suggests this will enhance a woman's feminine qualities while allowing a man to exhibit his masculine qualities. Men, by contrast, are encouraged to give, serve, and provide and think of meeting the woman's needs.

While these ideas may strike some as anachronistic or worse, there seems to be some common sense to them that may be worth investigating. Since having read this book and experimenting with some of its ideas, I have made my relationship a LOT better and (speaking from a female's perspective), not acting in a male role as persuer (and understanding the difference between active and receptive interest, a distinction covered in great deal in the book) has lessened my anxiety level in the relationship.

Try some of these ideas out for yourself to see how they work. Your mileage may vary but I would recommend this book to any person feeling lost in their dating lives.

Here, published in facsimile for the first time since the eighteenth century, are John Kirby's extremely rare large-scale Suffolk maps of 1736 and 1737 and the 1735 edition of his road-book The Suffolk Traveller, the earliest single-county roadbook. Those who subscribed for the 1736 map received the 1735 Traveller gratis. The maps of 1764 and 1766 which his sons published after his death are also provided, the former decorated with twelve engravings of castles and abbeys in the county.The earliest maps were the result of a survey of the whole county which Kirby carried out, with some help from Nathaniel Bacon, between 1732 and 1734. Although it is easy to point to inaccuracies, the hand-coloured maps are highly decorative and correct many of the errors common on earlier Suffolk maps in county atlases. The heraldry on the one-inch maps and the named owners and occupiers of the larger estates provide the basis for new select directories of the county in the mid 1730s and mid-1760s. This work of Suffolk topography includes a biography of John Kirby himself and a full account of the travails of publishing his maps and book. Contributions by JENNY JAMES.
