Book Description
After committing credit card fraud at a local department store, 18-year-old Reginald Hall lands an eight-month sentence at the Delaware County Prison. What complicates his life as an inmate is his sexual orientation. In life, being gay is difficult enough; in prison, it can be a horrendous ordeal.
Attempting suicide, taking drugs, and having illicit sex were only some of the self-destructive behaviors Reginald dabbled in. His only sanity came from family visits and frequent phone calls to relatives, especially his mother, his reaching out to God, and his few genuine friendships formed in jail, particularly with Lamont. This is not to say Reginald was an angel during his stay at DCP. He had plenty of jailhouse crushes, some of them inappropriate - like his infatuation with Teddy Cunningham. Teddy had it all: looks, money, respect, and a big love muscle that Reginald just lusted for.

Fine for what it was..........2007-06-07
I read Memoir: Delaware County Prison in a few hours. Reginald's story telling was straight to the point and fresh. However, I typically am drawn to books whose main character is at least sympathetic, and I found the author's experience to be extremely unsympathetic. At no point did I, the reader, feel that he was the least bit remorseful for what he did to get himself into this situation.Rather, he was just sorry that he got caught.
We the readers are treated to a rainstorm of tears and homesickness, laced with his quest to find the right guy with the right feet. Nothing was ever right for this poor soul. It was too hot in E-Block, and too cold in the trailers..everything was too nasty and the food wasn't good enough so he opted to starve himself than eat what was given him.
Everytime he was moved somewhere relatively better, he messes it up. There were a few intances where other inmates were trying to use him as their form of "release" and some even took a liking to him, and he used it to get what he wanted. But then, later, he complains that he can't understand why one day, the inmates like him, and the next day they don't.
On the synopsis at the back cover, there is talk of drug dabbling and illicit sex..and I found nothing of the sort in the story. The author's narrative was however very entertaining and probably at times inadvertently so.
Overall, I thought it was a good book; it certainly kept my attention. But, I love to read about people who I feel I can root for, and with him, I felt, "Let him stay his behind in there!"
Very Good Writting For his First!.......2007-03-30
This Book was very well written ,Reginald Hall takes the reader inside behind prison walls to experience life as he lived it, I really enjoyed this book, my only issue is that The author did not expose how Violent and brutal life behind bars really is, but I guess it was his personal experience that he wrote about, other han that it was a Very Good Book & I recommend it!Im half way thru his other book Smoking Ciggarets and so far it too is very Good!
Title To Be Revised.......2004-10-25
Memoir: Delaware County Prison chronicles the months Reginald (a.k.a. Reg) has to spend in the prison for committing credit card fraud. The author doesn't give detail of the offense and I'd assume there was a prior offense because he was already on probation and a "detainer" by the probation office is the main reason he's confined for eight months, as opposed to a couple of days. I'm confused. So the question is: What was he on probation for? Was it for committing credit card fraud or something else?
The memoir starts with his initial intake, goes through his perils of being gay and in prison and ends at outtake. Hall speaks of the incidents he was subjected to just for being gay (i.e., attempted rape, gay bashing, and assault). He also brings to light another interesting subject that seems to plague Black men - homosexual behavior while inmates. There were a few instances where Reg noted he had "crushes" on a few "straight" men and one ultimately led to a sexual encounter. However, the person he had the encounter with emphasized that he didn't "go that way" yet he went there with Reg. How scary is that?
Memoir: Delaware County Prison reads like he has jotted down his memory of the incidents but without much detail. It misses the most important element - a plot. To have been written by a teenager, expressing his horrible time in prison, it's cute. The synopsis makes the book seem interesting; however, none of the subjects were touched upon. Had he given detail on his attempting suicide, taking drugs, engaging in other self-destructive behavior, along with "why" he was in prison it would have made for a more interesting read. But for now it's just - cute.

Incarcerated.......2004-07-26
In MEMOIR: DELAWARE COUNTY PRISON, author Reginald Hall painstakingly chronicles his sojourn as a prison inmate. Using a very clear, simple and precise writing style, Hall essentially unveils a story filled with all the nuances, innuendoes and uncertainties of prison life. More importantly, MEMOIR: DELAWARE COUNTY PRISON gives insight into the indignities suffered by an eighteen year old, who also happens to be gay, in an environment where machismo is the dominant culture.
Hall's unobtrusive writing style adds an edge to the story, but this is blurred by his introduction of characters that are often superficial or one dimensional. The story never quite reaches its true potential and often the reader is left with the sense that there are exciting and at times dangerous possibilities lurking beneath the author's straightforward prose, which are never fully realized.
MEMOIR: DELAWARE COUNTY PRISON is a valiant first effort for noted gay rights advocate Reginald Hall. He manages to capture the readers attention with the possibilities the title seems to offer, and it does have its bright moments. The story, however, would benefit from more attention to detail especially in the area of character development.

wish it had a little more-but killer nontheless.......2004-06-04
i had the chance to meet the author in one of the most unusual circumstances & found him to be a really nice guy. he gave me a copy of this book & when i started to read it, i couldn't put it down. how he speaks of the prison system & how they work things in there is right on point. the beatings, the unfair treatment because of color & sexual preference, and the lack of cooperation from the people who were suppose to be helping him made me want to cry for this guy. having had first hand experience with the prisoners & the prison itself, i felt kind of bad for the author. i don't care what he did to get in there (robbery maybe?), it doesn't make it right for him to be treated that way & besides, there are straight, white, rich men who do much worse & get much less time & punishment. the system sucks.
it was strange to see names that i recognized in the book as well as old friends. i just wish he would have wrote more about how he got in there & why he had the detainers. i'm hoping a second book comes out explaining what happened to him after he left the prison & how his life changed because of it. "Memoir" is not bad for a first book.

Alphabetical Reference.......2005-04-28
This book is a collection of short articles on garden plants, pests, and diseases. The articles are organized in alphabetical order. Each of the plant articles begins with a short description, and then goes on to include information about planting (when, where, how), germination, care, harvesting, storing, pests and diseases, as well as tips for the kitchen and garden. In general, these articles use only the common names for the plants, and scientific names are not included. The pest articles (mainly about insects, but there are also some articles about pesky mammals and birds), are generally shorter, and include a description of the problem, how to recognize it, and how to combat it (organically). There are also a few articles on such topics as mulches and composting. Arkin includes a wide range of herbs as well as garden vegetables and fruits, and she includes notes on companion planting in the tips sections of the plants articles. The book also includes a chart of when to plant where (in the continental United States), and a garden glossary. There are decorative collage-type illustrations at the beginning of each letter of the alphabet, but no utilitarian diagrams or drawings.
Good beginner gardening book.......2000-06-22
This book is a collection of articles on commonly grown vegetables, herbs and fruits. Nothing in here for the gardening pro, except some good storage and cooking tips.
a great book for beginning gardeners.......1998-02-13
The Essential Kitchen Gardener is a must have book for beginning gardeners and gardeners who have had bad experiences in the past. It contains a wealth of information about when, where and how to grow vegetables and herbs; along with great information on the pests and diseases that attack our gardens. What I liked most was the information about harvesting, storing, and using each vegetable and herb!!

A great way to gain insight into the world of your little one.......2007-09-08
There is something gratifying about having your parenting instincts justified by official child experts. Most of parenting is a gut-based exercise but this sort of books gives parents a few tools and tactics to help deal with the age of two. The more we know about the mindset and developmental nuances of our children, the better we can be to them. This little book is full of interesting points about the psychology of a blossoming 2 year old. Concise and insightful. I totally recommend it!
Please, Please Update these books!.......2007-08-02
I love this entire series, but they are SOOO dated (first published in the 70s!) Great advice is sprinkled in with references to mom staying at home while dad works, the MOTHER's responsibility to get the baby on schedule, etc. If they would only update this series with an eye towards two-career families or families in which the father takes a more active role, I think more readers would be able to digest this very good information without gritting their teeth at the outdated (and now sexist) references to parental roles.
30 Years out of Date.......2006-12-10
The editors really need to revise this book to reflect modern times. It assumes every mom is a stay at home mom and every family has 2 heterosexual parents. The kicker was when it suggested that some moms get together with their kids and develop playgroups, and how they were starting to see it as a trend. Oh, I almost forgot about the suggestion about how moms should try putting their children in part time child care for the day to give themselves breaks. Again, this assumes every mom is a stay at home and "Father" is the primary breadwinner.
The book was a waste of money. I strongly suggest you stay away from this - at least until it gets edited for the 21st century.
Great Book to Help Get an Idea of What's Going On With Your 2 Year Old.......2006-11-15
This is not one of those "do X to solve your child's Y problem." It basically just lets you know what is going on with your 2 and 2.5 year old. The researchers observed 1000's of two year olds over several years and this book is the culmination of their research - in an easy to read format, as well. They do offer general advice - take it with a grain of salt because some of it is REALLY outdated. But the insights on what is going on, what to expect, what's "normal", and the list of toys and books appropriate for two year olds is invaluable. AND, at under 150 pages it is a quick read (since most parents of three year olds don't have much time to do so).
Book: not really Terrible or Tender.......2006-11-10
There's some useful info in this volume, but very little of it. Because it hasn't been updated in 30 years, some of the information is totally out of date. The discipline info is *way* different than what we want to practice with our child, and the authors really seem to feel strongly that every parent needs more time away from their child. ;-) It can be a decent general guideline for what to expect developmentally, but it doesn't go into enough detail to be all that useful.
Book Description
Tasha Tudor's poignant art has fascinated adults and children for decades. Her nineteenth-century New England lifestyle is legendary. Gardeners are especially intrigued by the profusion of antique flowers -- spectacular poppies, six-foot foxgloves, and intoxicating peonies -- in the cottage gardens surrounding her hand-hewn house. Until now we've only caught glimpses of Tasha Tudor's landscape. In this gorgeous book, two of her friends, the garden writer Tovah Martin and the photographer Richard Brown, take us into the magical garden and then behind the scenes. As we revel in the bedlam of Johnny-jump-ups and cinnamon pinks, the intricacy of the formal peony garden, and the volumptuousness of her heirloom roses, we also learn Tasha's gardening secrets. How does she coax forth her finicky camellia blossoms in the dead of a Vermont winter? How does she train that fantastic topiary to model for her artwork? How can she keep her crown imperials from tumbling in the winds? Tasha's garden reflects a wealth of family lore, perfected through the years and years of working the soil. We may be dazzled by the beauty of the garden, but we come away from this book with practical ideas about improving our own plots of land. "Paradise on earth" is how Tasha describes her garden, and along with the flowers and the vegetables that provide her food, her paradise is filled with an enchanting menagerie -- corgies, Nubian goats, cats, chickens, fantail doves, and forty or more exotic finches, cockatiels, canaries, nightingales, and parrots, which inhabit her collection of antique cages. Tasha's beautiful watercolors and her enchanting anecdotes color this sublimely beautiful book.

Tasha Tudor's Garden - Beautiful book!.......2007-07-24
I received this book several years ago as a birthday gift. It has beautiful pictures of Tasha Tudor's garden and flowers. I bought it this year for my friends 60th birthday gift. She loves it!
Inspiration for Gardeners.......2007-01-04
This is a wonderful book featuring the garden of children's book author and illustrator Tasha Tudor. Not a gardening how-to book but rather a photographic tour of the garden. It does show that a garden can be at its most charming when not rigidly landscaped but grown in a more naturalistic way. A must for all Tasha Tudor fans bookshelves.
a beautiful woman.......2006-07-24
I have loved Tasha Tudor's illustrations in books like "The Tasha Tudor Book of Fairy Tales", "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess" since childhood. I didn't know anything about Tasha Tudor as a person, and then one Christmas my mother gave me this book. Wow! Mrs. Tudor has lived a remarkable life and she is an amazing person. She has chosen to create a home for herself that seems to exist in a century past. Her son built a rustic house for her, and she has surrounded it with extensive farm buildings, cottage gardens, fruits, berries, chickens, goats and dogs. She dresses in layers of vintage clothing and eats off of china that has been in her family for generations. I just love this woman, and her lifestyle. This is a beautiful book.
Surprise.......2005-02-08
I purchased this book years ago... at a bookstore and paid the full price. Had I known about Amazon.com....I could have saved money. Then I could have more books! I strongly recommend this book for all gardeners to add to their home library. Enjoy!
a journey to the past.......2003-01-19
Looking at Tasha Tudor's Garden is like taking a journey to another century, surrounded by beauty and peace. Tasha herself wears 19th century clothes, including petticoats, shawls, and head kerchiefs and lives in an antique-appearing house, going about her life with what seems to be a minimal of technology. The photographs that capture her seeing to the goats in the barn in winter, carrying a basket of hand-pulled weeds in summer, arranging lillies, tulips, peonies and old roses in her lovely old house, and seeing the cottage gardens in bloom are absolutely gorgeous. Sometimes gardeners just need inspiration, and this book is perfect for this. Enjoy.
Book Description
In TASHA TUDOR'S HEIRLOOM CRAFTS, author Tovah Martin and photographer Richard Brown take us back to Corgi Cottage, this time going inside to watch Tasha create the handmade items that are an integral part of her legendary nineteenth-century lifestyle. Here, surrounded by her wonderful collection of American antiques and collectibles, Tasha spins flax, dyes wool, and weaves on one of her seven looms. She dips candles, makes soap, presses cider, and dries herbs. Her Nubian goats supply milk for cheese and butter; her bantam hens offer eggs for cooking and decorating. Using only original tools and almost forgotten techniques, Tasha Tudor never has idle hands. For this book, Tasha also created a series of paintings in the style that has made her one of America"s best-loved children"s book illustrators. "Tudor would probably already be a "national living treasure" if our government bestowed the equivalent of Japan"s accolade for individuals of outstanding artistic achievement" (BOOKLIST).
Customer Reviews:
A Peaceful Read.......2007-09-21
If you want a peaceful interlude at the end of a hectic day...if you want to step back into a simpler time (just for a while)....this is the book for you.
Tasha Tudor lives in the world she wants to live in, the world she has created & kept. This book lets you get to know her & all about the arts & crafts that she loves & wants to keep alive. As a crafter of some of the dying arts, I love this book. Not only does the reading hold your interest, the photography is excellent. A very good read!
The real life of Tasha Tudor.......2006-08-06
When I was very young, my first book was "The Tasha Tudor Book of Fairy Tales". I loved the sweet watercolor illustrations of the classic fairy tale stories. It was obvious that Mrs. Tudor loved dogs and foxes and Puss in Boots, and the flower illustrations that surround the text are so perfect and true-to-life! As an older child, I was surprised to find that Tasha Tudor had also illustrated my editions of "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess". When, as an adult, I received the book "Tasha Tudor's Garden" as a gift from my mother, I realized that the illustrator lives just as wonderful a life as what she portrays in her illustrations. Now, in "Tasha Tudor's Heirloom Crafts" the reader can find out more about Mrs. Tudor's unique life, a re-creation of the simple and beautiful way of life of the 1800s. There are beautiful photos of Mrs. Tudor carding and weaving and making her own cosmecuticals from the products of her own plants and animals. This is not a how-to book, but a book of inspiration for those of us who love the idea of doing for ourselves and living closer to the land.
A beautiful book.......2006-03-27
As with all of the books about Tasha Tudor this one is beautiful. The scenery and written text are enriching in their content. Once again I was inspired by her life and her creative abilities. The only flaw I could see was the fact that there was little explanation of HOW she did any of the things she mentioned. I'm not suggesting she give detailed instructions on spinning and weaving, woodworking and all the other things she is so wonderfully gifted with. But a few more details on how some of the simpler projects would have been fun.
Wonderful, and inspiring.......2002-12-06
Tasha Tudor is a kindred spirit and this book is a treasure, full of photographs and text on her life and loves, from making baskets, to processing wool from her sheep, milk from her goats, or baking with the eggs her hens provide. Candle making, drying flowers, growing and processing flax into linen, making pottery, raising a vegetable, herbs and flower gardens as well as making hand cream and sewing everything from quilts to clothing.
I guess one reason I wanted and love this book is it shows that one can in 2002 still savor the arts of the past and provide a lot of what one needs to survive day to day. And being small homesteaders in the Sierras I felt as if I were reading the diary or how to journal of one of my older neighbors. The book is one that I can really identify with.
This is a book that anyone who loves making things with their hands will love. And it is a wonderful book for reminding people of what is really important in life.
When I grow up I want to be just like Tasha!!.......2001-06-16
Wow! I have always been fascinated by the processes of making things by hand and really starting from the ground up. Tasha Tudor lives her entire life this way, starting with flax seeds and ending up three years later with a hand woven, hand sewn linen shirt.
Little did I know, at age six, reading The Doll's House, that the illustrator of this lovely children's book was also a kindred spirt. I wish I lived closer to Vermont and could go visit and learn from this amazing wise woman!
Book Description
In Tasha Tudors Dollhouse, her extra-ordinary house is presented in full detail. There is antique, museum-quality furniture, a gilded birdcage, and even a working stove. With this captivating book, Tasha Tudor will expand her large and devoted readership to include all those who are enthralled by the miniature world of dolls and dollhouses. 110 colour photos are included.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring!.......2004-10-05
Those who say this isn't the "real" doll house are missing the point entirely! The Williamsburg house was specially made because "Thaddeus Crane" and "Emma Birdwhistle" never had their own proper dollhouse, but lived on shelves. The book explains this quite clearly. The one-quarter life size scale is fascinating in itself. Anyone who is a fan of handmade dolls, doll houses, or Tasha Tudor should delight in this amazing book. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Not bad book, but not great.......2004-02-11
This isn't Tasha's dollhouse, like I thought it was. I got suckered in like many. Still, it is a well presented book with delightful pictures. And the furnishings are Tasha Tudor's. The ideas and elements of the design are well within the reach of the serious dollhouse collector and for that, the product of emulation, it is invaluable and inspiring. But like Coleen Moore's dollhouse, and Queen Mary's, there is a lot about it that are not within the reach of the average person. One has to realize this was not an authentic doll house, but a item made for display for people to marvel at. And marvel we do. The plans shown in there are adaptable. But I would much rather have seen Tasha's dollhouse...the real thing.
Beautiful book-illustrations are superb.......2000-10-07
This inspiring book provides readers a colorful look at the holiday season at the home of renowned artist Tasha Tudor. Accompanying Harry Davis' kaleidoscopic descriptions is illustrations and photographs by Jay Paul. The book is well designed and depicts a wide range of Christmas activities centering on how Ms. Tudor and friends celebrate the season of joy. This is a wonderful gift for individuals who enjoy the art of Tasha Tudor as Mr. Davis and Mr. Paul pay homage to the great artist.

MISLEADING...NOT REALLY TASHA TUDOR'S DOLLHOUSE.......2000-07-09
I am surprised to find out that Tasha Tudor's actual dollhouse is not pictured in the book, because the title leads us to believe we will see the "real" thing. Instead we see a re-creation by Colonial Williamsburg. My understanding was that the blank pages and extra white space were to have had art by Tasha Tudor. Little Brown is quoted in the Tudor bibliography as planning 20 line drawings and 20 watercolors by Tudor. Did she refuse to do the drawings because she didn't approve of Harry Davis' writing the book? Aside from the furnishings being from Tasha, the house we really see is a recent replica and is misleading. I would rather see Tasha Tudor's real dollhouse not a newly made replica. I was disappointed with this book, especially knowing that Tasha did not want it published.

Author-illustrator Tasha Tudor is one of America's most recognized and beloved artists. Her many classic children's books--Pumpkin Moonshine, 1 Is One, and Corgiville Fair to name a few--have virtually raised generations of children, and all signs point to their continued popularity for generations to come. In The Art of Tasha Tudor, the artist's longtime business partner and friend, Harry Davis, presents a remarkable retrospective of her life and work, featuring 150 of her finest drawings and paintings, from books, fashion designs, holiday cards, and her personal sketchbooks. The beautiful tribute is not without controversy, however, if only in that Davis and Tudor apparently parted company on not the best of terms. However, for the innumerable devotees of Tasha Tudor's extraordinary lifestyle and art, the book is indeed a comprehensive treasure. Tracing Tudor's life from early years with her family through some difficult periods with her husband and children to the present, Davis includes many amusing, poignant, and cutting anecdotes that could only come from an intimate acquaintance. Throughout, of course, are Tudor's exquisite illustrations of small critters and adorable children, most often set against a rustic New England backdrop. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

Delightful!.......2007-08-21
I bought this book with a bit of trepidation given the controversy between Harry Davis and Tasha Tudor. I'm so glad I did. It is a beautiful book containing many, many illustrations on thick enough paper that I'm tempted to matte and hang a few. I thought Harry Davis was very respectful of Tasha Tudor--this wasn't a "tell-all" book at all. My only problem is that the book has whetted my appetite for all things Tudor and I'm having to fight down the impulse to order a list of old favorites.....for the children, of course.

Having been a fan of Tudor's work since I was a small child, I was delighted to find this book and read it cover to cover in just one day.
I found Mr. Davis's relationship with Tudor to be interesting and insightful into what Tasha is like as a person, day to day. It was obvious in the book that they have had their differences, but I found Mr. Davis still maintained a profound respect and awe for this prolific artist. His viewpoints have rounded out my view of Tasha Tudor, offering a real person, rather than just the idealized version of her that I had previously.
I hope that I can give my two young daughters at least of fraction of the magic Tudor has interwoven into her own life!
controversy should not be used in critiquing this book!.......2000-12-14
When I bought this book I had no idea of its supposed 'unauthorized' status due to a parting of the ways between Tasha Tudor and the author; her agent Harry Davis. I wasn't made aware of this until after I had read the book, enjoyed the artwork and deemed it a worthwhile purchase. In fact, I felt that I appreciated Tasha more after reading the biographical portions of this book because it made her seem more human than some of the other books published about her. I felt that Harry Miles did a very fair job. This book is NOT a scathing, gossipy smear of 'Dear Tasha'. It is a lovely overview of her work and the life that was being lived when that work was created.
A Better Book Exists.......2000-12-08
How can the jacket flap state that this book is to be the seminal book on Tashas's life and work when such a work already exists in the fine bibliography book, a work of true scholarship entitled Tasha Tudor, The Direction of Her Dreams by John and Jill Hare.
The Davis book is a disappointment with many illustrations taken from her newer books and works . I had hoped to see as yet unpublished works of Tasha's art from the past.....old Christmas cards etc....
More Gossip Than Art; A Crass Attempt to Cash In on Tudor.......2000-10-16
The jacket flap describes this book as "sure to become the seminal book on her (Tasha Tudor's) life and work". Hardly. The commentary on the images presented in this book are painfully brief and pedestrian at best; they add no new insight. Many of the images have been seen in many other books; those that are new aren't that interesting.
However, most disturbing is the text. Tasha Tudor is a woman known for cherishing her privacy. This book spends most of its time trying to destroy it, elaborating on information more suited to a scandal sheet than to a serious book examining Tasha Tudor's art. Vingettes about the author's involvement with Tudor are mean spirited in the extreme.
I'm sure Ms. Tudor, like all of us, has her moments, but in my opinion it is clear that this book was written by her former business partner as a form of revenge. If I could give this book zero stars I would. Please don't reward Mr. Davis' crass attempt to cash in on a former business relationship with a great illustrator.

Book Description
George Hudson, the eponymous Railway King, started his career with a stroke of luck, inheriting 27,000 pounds—a fortune in 1827—from a distant relative. He invested successfully in the North Midland Railway, then formed his own Midland Railway, raising 5 million pounds and bribing MPs along the way. But from his glory in 1845 he fell into disgrace, admitting corruption and selling land he did not own. He was eventually imprisoned in York Castle and died a broken man in 1871. His story provides an insight into 19th-century politics and industrial progress, full of moral dilemmas and also a testimony to the growth of the railways in Britain.
