Book Description
Inca-Kola is the funny, absorbing account of Matthew Parris's fourth trip to Peru, on a bizarre holiday which takes him among bandits, prostitutes, peasants and riots. He and his three companions seem to head into trouble, not away from it, and he describes the troubles, curiosities and wonders they meet with the spell-binding fascination of a traveller relating adventures over the campfire.
`A backpacker's classic: atmospheric, touching, instructive and compulsively readable' The Times
Customer Reviews:
Tory Boy Backpacker.......2004-10-31
Inca Kola is considered by many to be one of the quintessential backpacker reads about this part of the world. It tells the story, narrated by Matthew Parris- former Conservative MP and current parliamentary sketchwriter for the Times - of a group of friends as they embark on an adventurous trip around Peru encompassing gruelling hikes in the northern mountains, hair raising bus rides and encounters with interesting local characters along the way.
The group does not cover large areas of Peru, but the areas they visit Parris describes with a vibrant and witty style. He is at his funniest when wryly describing everyday scenes- such as the traffic in Lima and the dialogue between his friends and Peruvians- such as when they wind up one of the group by telling a guide that he is impotent. There is much in the way of amusing incident along the way, although sometimes there is a sense that Parris tries too hard to eke an amusing anecdote out of an uneventful set of circumstances.
What sets this book back is Parris's frequently condescending style towards those he meets, as is often the case when a British Conservative MP travels into unfamiliar territory in order to make sense of the socioeconomic make up of the place. He belittles street hawkers, describing them as having 'no enthusiasm in commerce', as if he expects near starving beggars to go about their daily business with as much enthusiasm as Donald Trump. This trait is repeated throughout the book as he describes 'filthy Andean peasants' and paints a mocking picture of a little girl startled whilst urinating by a train emerging suddenly from a tunnel.
There are many unfortunate people in Peru, as with all Third World countries, and no doubt Parris was attempting to convey an accurate picture of the scenes he saw. But the superior, snobbish tone that comes through in many of the passages left me thinking that there must be observers with a different voice that could bring alive the facets of this fascinating country in a more sensitive, multi appreciative way.
Amazingly funny!.......2002-09-25
This book captures spirit that is backpacking across Peru. It is probably better if you have visited the country at least once before you read the book, just so you will understand the little things that Parris points out. However, if you have been in the country for any amount of time at all, this book will remind you of every experience you had there. A wonderfully written book!
A reader from Germany.......2001-06-22
If you never been in Peru, this book will put off!!
There are better books about Peru.......2001-06-11
After being in Peru, this book does not represents the country at all, from a non anglo-saxon point of view. It seemed to me that the writer went there with a closed mind, considering himself and his group superior to the rest. I found this book nothing but a pile of exagerated lies. Far from attracting me, it completely repels me
An absolute must!.......1999-11-02
This book has to be one of the best books written about life in Peru. If you never wanted to go there before - you will now!

Book Description
Wellington Rankin was arguably one of the most powerful Montana figures in the first half of the 20th century. Without him, it might be argued that the name of Jeannette Rankin, his older sister, might not be known to us today. He was instrumental in both her elections to congress. At one time he was the largest landowner in the United States with over one million acres under his ownership, though his stewardship of the many ranches he owned was often controversial. A brilliant, flamboyant attorney, Rankin was a champion of the underdog. Had he lived in the later part of the century, he would have been a nationally known attorney in the pattern of F. Lee Bailey and Gerry Spence. Though serving as the Montana State Attorney General, the U.S. Attorney for the state of Montana, and for years the powerful head of the Montana Republican Party, he was unable to get elected to the office he coveted most, the U.S. Senate.
Dave Walter, Research Historian for the Montana Historical Society states in his forward to the book, "To say that Wellington Rankin presents an enigman is to belabor the obvious. Possessing perhaps Montana's most adept political mindeverthem man failed to be elected time and time again. Awash in property and wealth, he reached his peak as a courtroom attorney who defended the downtrodden. A horseman of real repute, he proved unable or unwilling to sustain a quality ranching operation."
"Is there a home-grown Montanan who alive who does not have a 'Wellington Rankin story'? This volume sorts through the stories, sifts fact from fiction, and launches the unraveling of a persistent enigma."
Because Rankin kept few records, little has been written of him. Volney Steele spent more than ten years researching through what little information was available and interviewing family and friends. He has done an outstanding job of piecing together the life of this remarkable figure in Montana history.
Author Biography: Volney Steele, a retired physician, has lived in Bozeman, Montana for more than forty years. He has published several articles on frontier medicine, and is a passionate student and researcher of frontier history.

The Essential (and only) Rankin Book.......2004-06-03
How ridiculous it is to suggest that someone who did not live with a subject is unable to chronicle his or her life. Does this mean that no one can be the biographer of anyone who lived before their subject's time? One reason there are no other biographies of Wellington Rankin in print, is because Wellington and the Rankin family were extremely private people. All of Wellington's personal papers are currently under seal in the state's historical archives and unavailable to researchers. The author spent 10 years meticulously culling through what records were available and interviewing countless people who did live with, work with, and know Rankin. People who knew or knew of Rankin either loved him or hated him. The author's attempt and success at painting an honest picture of the man will no doubt inflame those on both sides. His goal was to dispel the myths of the man, both positive and negative, and he has done an excellent job. This book is not only an outstanding portrayal of a man of legendary stature in Montana; it also offers an excellent background on the politics of his time. Whether you loved or hated the man you will find something in this book to support your beliefs, or anger you. If you are unfamiliar with him, you will find an excellent recounting of one of the most fascinating characters, not only in Montana history, but also in U.S. history. If you love the history of the West, this is a must read.
Wellington Rankin: His Family, Life and Times by Volney Stee.......2003-09-30
How pathetic that someone who never met Wellington Rankin, and was neither born nor raised in Montana, can claim to be his biographer. Gleaned mainly from old newspapers, rumors and suposition, there is nothing insightfull here and nothing not generally known. The many who knew Wellington Rankin personally, and admired his wit, intelligence, charm and generosity are strangely absent in this book. The cheap gossip shows a lack of knowledge of Montana and Western history. Two examples: "He let his cattle run loose"...Montana had a free range policy, as did other cattle states, and still does. "He hired jail-birds"...Yes, cowboys do get drunk and land in jail. Tsk-Tsk. This book reminds one of a 7th grader's term paper. Dull facts, no substance but loads of footnotes.
Book Description
Cowboy, army guide, farmer, peace officer, and character in his own right, John P. Meadows arrived in New Mexico from Texas as a young man. During his life in the Southwest, he knew or worked for many well-known characters including: William Billy the Kid Bonney, Sheriff Pat Garrett, John Selman, Hugh Beckwith, Charlie Siringo, and Pat Coghlan. Meadows helped investigate the disappearance of Colonel Albert Jennings Fountain, and later bought part of downtown Tularosa, New Mexico, where he served a term as mayor.
The recollections gathered here and edited by John P. Wilson are based on Meadows's interviews with a reporter for the Alamogordo News, a partial transcript of his reminiscences given at the Lincoln State Monument, and a talk he gave by invitation at Roswell, New Mexico, to refute inaccuracies in the 1930 MGM movie Billy the Kid. Meadows's lucid presentation appeared in the Roswell, New Mexico, Daily Record where he spoke about Pat Garrett, Billy the Kid, and other experiences from the Southwest's frontier days.
I am not going to leave the country, and I am not going to reform, neither am I going to be taken alive again.Billy the Kid to John P. Meadows, May 1, 1881
A collection of John P. Meadows's interviews originally given to refute inaccuracies in the 1930 movie Billy the Kid. Also includes Meadows's memories of the Southwest's frontier days and the characters he knew.

Book Description
AS SEEN ON "THE VIEW"!
The real news of our lives is not in newspapers. We must chronicle our own adventures and achievements, our brilliant observations and our comic relief, our best friends and our greatest embarrassments. Visual Chronicles is all about YOU: your dreams, your memories, your daily routines, your greatest loves and your secret pet peeves. It's all about getting to know yourself better, savoring the wonderful ebb and flow of your everydays, and celebrating it all in visual mementos of your life journey.
Art journaling is fun, cathartic and EASY. Each chapter of Visual Chronicles quiets common fears such as "Nothing happens in my life." or "I'm just not artistic." with projects such as the "My Day Unfolds Journal", and "Experiments with Composition." Inside, you'll learn that journaling doesn't take big chunks of time--just bits and pieces here and there, whenever the spirit strikes. "Get Going" exercises offer instant ideas such as listening to the conversations you have with yourself or recognizing that meaningful ephemera is a part of each and every day. Soon, you'll see that inspiration awaits all around you: a midnight trip to the store, a favorite scarf, an unexpected phone call, junk email, your breakfast plate . . .
Don't wait another second. Make creative journaling a part of your everyday life, busting through self-doubt, time clocks, piles of laundry, and every other roadblock along the way. With Visual Chronicles, you'll be inspired to tell your story the way only you can!
Rosie O'Donnell, The View, October 19, 2006:
"This is the only book you'll ever need, to learn how to scrapbook in a way that is uniquely yours."
RubberStamp Madness Magazine

Customer Reviews:
life changing book.......2007-09-20
Visual Chronicles is a must have book for any crafter or artist. Beginning artists will learn new skills and advanced artists will be re-energized. The authors are lighthearted and funny and the projects are easy to follow. Once you make your own personal palette, you will see everything in life differently. This book is an oasis in a desert of sepia toned craft books by authors who take themselves way too seriously. By the end of this book, you will be an artist and you'll have made two new best friends. Read this book! I can't wait for the next book by these talented sisters.
Good book for new art journalists.......2007-09-13
This was the first book I read when I learned there was such a thing as art journaling. I'm a photographer and not a painter, but I love to work with my hands and with paint and glue and expressing myself on paper. This book showed me from the start that I don't have to be a painter or art student to begin art journaling; it took all the intimidation away and gave me the practical tools and encouragement I needed to begin this new art form for me. The written style of the book is personal and conversational, and I've njoyed reading it, not to mention learning so much, from the first application of the glue stick up.
collage,/mixed media.......2007-09-04
this book was exactly what i was looking for. It explains in simple and easy to understand terms, how to go about jornaling on your collaged books, which can also extend to scrapbooking. An essential guide book for the beginner or advanced mixed media artist and scrapbooker. Definately reccomended
Must Have!.......2007-07-25
If you are new to Visual Journaling, this is a must have book. Wonderful directions for getting started and getting yourself to open up to this unique experience. Even if you don't think of yourself as artistic, this book will pull it out and you'll enjoy the journey.
staying creative in a decidedly uncreative world..........2007-07-25
I have every book on art journaling known to man. Quite a few on regular journaling, too. And a fair bit on paper arts. I might just have a small, tiny book *addiction*. That's neither here nor there.
What IS both here and there is that I lusted after this book before it came out. I think I may have actually scared some people at B&N with the crazy-eyed, wild-haired begging for them to hurry up and get it in. (I'd preordered it here, but it was taking just way too long. Yes, I know they ship the first day. That's beside the point. I'm not so good with instant gratification.)
So when it came in from Amazon, the first thing I did was toss aside the other filler books I bought to get the free shipping and flopped down on the floor with Visual Chronicles.
An hour later, when I came up for air, the first thing I did was prepaint some shoes. SHOES, people! Who woulda thunk of creating a literal *walking journal*? Evidently, Linda and Karen.
From that first set of shoes until now, I keep finding pieces of this book in things that I do, artwise. It's a revolutionary book in a very quiet way -- making you think about both the extraordinary and the everyday. Those little "Have No Fear" quotes (which one reviewer obviously didn't understand to be set-offs for tidbit tips) get repeated in my head when I'm stuck, or needing a dose of inspiration. And the projects, while not my typical style, have been something I've gone back to again and again. (The miniprompt book and the color glossary in particular.) And I definitely didn't find any of it to be condescending -- maybe because I really see the authors (through their writing here) as friends. Highly enthusiastic, you-can-do-it cheerleader friends, wanting to share a little bit of their creative spirits with everyone, rather than hoarding it all for themselves.
Like I said, I've got a shelf full of journaling books. Among those, there are probably a dozen that I refer back to again and again, and Visual Chronicles is one of those. I've never regretted buying it, or keeping it at the ready -- because that inspiration that's so freely given is priceless.

Riotte explains siting a pond, maintaining water quality, troubleshooting, stocking with fish, plus plenty of old-time fishing lore and scrumptious fresh fish recipes.
Customer Reviews:
Ponds.......2007-01-22
This was an excellent book for information on our pond. We will find it and the references inside very useful!
Not Very Helpful.......2000-10-18
I found that this book would have been helpful for pond plants or if I needed a recipe to cook something I had raised in a pond, but I wanted information on keeping fish in a pond. Specifically I was interested in catfish, and silly me, I 'judged the book by its cover.' This book provides very little helpful infomation on raising pond fish as a hobby. If you're interested in spending several thousand dollars to commercially raise fish such as trout, then this book has something to offer. Otherwise don't bother.
A poetic account of country living........1998-05-12
This is a beautifully written book! It contains many whimsical anecdotes on the process of building a pond, also much practical information on plants, fish, frogs, turtles, and ducks. Having just built a pond, I found this book just the ticket. It doesn't have much about the actual digging and construction--that information is best obtained from your local Soil and Water Conservation Office. But I highly recommend this book if you're building a "real" pond (not one of those plastic pool things).
Bad Rodale Books revisited. Where's the meat?.......1998-03-17
Mostly touchy feely pointless antedotes. At most one page of useful information.
Book Description
To truly understand your intimate relationships, you must read this book! David Deida, internationally known for his work in personal growth and intimate relationships, shares the deep understandings and effective techniques that he has refined through his 20 years of consultation, research and spiritual practice. Learn how to keep your relationships growing--beyond the sexually neutralized roles so typical of today--and create a relationship that is spiritually erotic, sexually deep and passionately committed to love.
Customer Reviews:
A perfect introduction to some of the most advanced spiritual relationships work...aka the place to begin your Deida addiction.......2007-01-10
Intimate Communion provides an excellent introduction to the work of David Deida. Although written over a decade ago ago now, his work on spirituality, sex and relationships is really at the forefront of conscious relationships, far, far beyond your usual 'Men are from Mars, Women are From Venus' book (thank god for that, as a society, we've progressed well beyond that limited view of relationships and the work of David Deida, is clearly that next step).
Intimate Communion is an excellent starting point for understanding relationships as it goes into the discussion of Masculine and Feminine polarities in depth. That is, what they are, how they play out in relationships, when we're depolarised. There's a quick quiz to help you determine your natural polarity and then how you cover it up. Deida discussions how the masculine and feminine grows differently in relationships and you'll find yourself nodding in agreement constantly througout this section and the entire book.
There are many small insights throughout the book, e.g. how the feminine grows through praise, the masculine wants release, that when the feminine wants to talk about something she doesnt want her problem solved she wants to connect with you to enhance the relationship, that are simply worth more than the price of the book when you apply them into your life and relationships and they open up whole new areas of understanding and intimacy. Many of these the opposite sex simply has no idea about the perspective of the other sex and how fundamental (and obvious) they are to their life. When you understand these you will save many hours of suffering, frustration and internal questioning - why are men/women like this? You will be able to just smile with an inner knowing, even as your lover goes wild trying to collapse you. I cannot express to you how valuable many of these insights have been to me.
There are other insights, for instance, in his workshops he often gets women to pick the man they all prefer as being most conscious or the men to pick the most radiant woman, most of the time, they ALL pick the same person. This book begins the process of explaining why.
Deida's model is divided into three stage. Basically the first stage is co-dependent relationships, from there we evolve (as most of us have) into a '50-50' type relationship, where each partner is independent (successful in their own finances, career, spiritual practices, has done or is doing their healing, can be totally self sufficient, has their own life and wants but does not need a partner, etc.). This creates a healthy relationship of equality and yet a feeling that there's something missing. The next stage is to move back into your natural sexual essence and give the gift of that to your woman (and the world). Make no mistake, it is advanced work, and requires stability in the second stage (i.e. having done at least some of your healing) and yet many people are ready for it.
After this work I'd suggest women read 'Dear Lover' and Men 'The Way of the Superior Man', both are excellent books at the really at the top of the stack for relationships. I've given copies of both books away to men and women friends and they've always been delighted with the contents and wanted more. Further that there's the video he produced and his audio work (I'd recommend starting with Vol. 3 of his collection as it's the more advanced work). From that you get a much greater sense of what he's on about and some of the practical applications to relationship problems and his fine use of humor in his work. If you want a great read on his learning journey with his teacher, read Wild Nights. His enlightened sex manual gives specific tools and techniques (sometimes lacking in other volumes) to enhance your sexual experiences. Beyond that you need to do a workshop as although the tools in many of the books are great and the information provides a valuable perspective, the real benefit comes from experiencing the work related to your specific circumstances.
Another reviewer (elsewhere) made comment on his supposed teacher and the influence on his teachings. I don't consider this to be all that relevant. It's easy to tell from his extensive audio work his passion for his work, male-female relationships and his authenticity for genuinely assisting people to become more in their life and relationships.
As you get into the depth of Deida's work (and beyond this volume) you realise that there are very few people out there working at the same level. They're mostly working at what he calls the second stage (therapy) or '50-50' relationships. So most of the books on relationship are written from this perspective which most often leads to incremental improvement in relationships. I should point out Deida's work is not about healing, co-dependence, therapy or techniques like that, there are plenty of other books that cover those topics well enough.
If you're still unsure as to whether to buy this book, there is extensive writing on his website about his work and that should give you a flavour of what he's on about.
This is a first class introduction to a great body of work. I guarantee you'll learn insights about yourself and your partner and relating that are simply priceless in terms of the value generated by their practical application.
I hope you get as much out of it as I did. Thanks for reading my review.
An Engaging Introduction.......2006-01-18
Great philosophy here: an excellent guide to gender motivation and energy polarities. David Deida is brilliant, with a visual style of interpreting the realms of transpersonal psychology.
I've given this book 4 stars only due to poor editing - it becomes redundant after the first few chapters.
Saturate your mind with Deida's work at his `Blue Truth' site, or visit `Integral Naked', where you can watch some of his workshop videos and interviews for free!
intimate communion.......2005-08-04
This is a great book because it simply lays out the structure in men and women. The book helps the awareness of men and women change from confusion to understanding. Its appearent to me that in our culture both sexes has a misunderstanding in dealing with each other and even themselves. Me as a young man, this book has helped me to better understand myself and my counter parts.
Interesting but.......2003-06-11
This book gives us so much to think about, but there is still something missing. After each chapter I closed my eyes and thought through the lessons and how I could apply them to my own relationships. It really is insightful
Secrets of Sexual Attraction.......2003-06-01
It is rather interesting to compare this work written in 1995 to David Deida's work which appeared in 2002. This earlier work is rather revealing. Not only does Deida open up and share some secrets about his own relationship, he shows tremendous and at times breathtaking insight in regards to the female psyche. If anyone understands women, it is David Deida!
What this book ultimately reveals is a growing awareness of how men and women have both a male and female essence. The arc of polarity between the two is what counts in the realm of sexual satisfaction. If you have more masculine energy then you will attract a more feminine partner.
"For magnetic energy to flow, you need a north pole and a south pole. For sexual energy to flow, you need two poles too." ~David Deida
"Intimate Communion" not only explains why our relationships go through periods of dissatisfaction, but it reveals why we also go through intense moments of sheer ecstasy.
What makes a woman invite a man deeper into her world? Could it be as easy as the man listening to her and being fully present, strong and passionate? What are the qualities of an ideal woman? Yes, beauty does seem to be first, but intelligence is fifth on the list. It seems men want beauty and sex and women want presence and intelligence. Makes sense. What is a woman's deepest desire? It seems we women know what we want, but at times need to know why we are not attracting what we desire most.
Once you realize what attracts you to your opposite, you can start to work on areas to increase desire in your relationship. To find out which sexual essence you possess, there is a sexual essence quiz. This book also emphasizes the three main stages of Intimacy. Intimate Communion is the goal. This place where you are spontaneously loving or at least open as the sky. Where you see arguments as a place for self-improvement and welcome anger, extreme lust, the feminine sea of emotions and masculine possession.
Do women really want to be selfishly possessed? Or is it that the man realizes that when we say we want to be alone, we actually want the man to stay?
I still think there is time to just be by yourself or literally withdraw a bit from your partner and David seems to promote an absolute openness that might be exhausting for some individuals who enjoy their quiet space or a pout now and then. I see room for a woman being allowed to retreat, renew herself and then open again when she is ready. If a man is not sensitive to a woman's needs, then she should not be expected to remain so open that she continues to be wounded. I think when a woman is finally ready to return to the relationship, the most important thing a man can do is listen. I think we all just want to be understood.
David Deida seems mostly interested in helping his readers find their deepest gifts and literally become a magnet for their partner to be attracted to. The process to get to this point does contain risks.
After reading this book you will know:
Why men hate women giving them directions.
Why surrender can be erotic.
Why men have trouble committing to a relationship even when they are ?in love.?
Why the essential form of the feminine bad mood is the hurt of being unloved and the anger that results from feeling abandoned or rejected.
Why you can attract the wrong partner if you are giving off the wrong energy.
Why is confidence, vision and guidance so sexy?
What is amazing is how aware you become of everything around you. After reading this book, even songs on the radio will have a completely new twist. You start realizing that what men are singing about is at times directly related to the top 6 things men want in a woman and what women are singing about is the top 6 things women want in a man. There are also men who sing what women want to hear and seem to have that deeper awareness of what women really want.
While I normally like to read all David Deida?s books while I'm snuggled up in my comfy bed, this might be a book you want to read twice. Once just to read the book and then once to study and make notes!
The more books you read by this author, the better your relationship becomes. Even if only one partner is reading the books, it can make a big difference in your relationship.
It is as if these principles seep into your very soul. Suddenly you realize all the things you could be doing to encourage a more fulfilling relationships and all the things you are doing that are destroying what you want the most.

A Must for All Golfers.......2007-08-23
I live in North Carolina, where Ross made his home--at least in the fall, winter, and spring. There's almost a holy reverence for the man around here but there's a lot of bluster and phoney-ness too. For example, there are plenty of clubs that say they have a Ross course when they have anything but. I remember a guy at a country club here telling me how fortunate they were to have an original Ross course. At the time, I didn't know any better and so I believed the dafty. I soon discovered that little of the original routing remained. Why? Because Trent Jones came in at some stage and pretty much blew the place to smithereens plus the large oak trees of which members are so fond had changed the original routing beyond recognition. And if you cut down those trees at that club, you're dead. Dead. The original course had a handful of trees.
The beauty of Brad Klein's book is that it demystifies Ross while providing those with Ross courses a blueprint for renovation or restoration. It's a coffee table tome but it's much more than pretty pictures on coated paper. It's a thoroughly-researched thesis from someone with an advanced degree. It's also very well written and even passionate. Klein also resists the temptation to go PC, sensibly preferring to place Ross within the context of his time and place. Ross wasn't the greatest golf course architect (that's HS Colt) but Ross was a brilliant router; he understood the value of a golf course that everyone from the weekend hacker to the scratch man or woman could enjoy. Modern golf course architects need to make their courses easier, not harder. Take a look at one of the few remaining relatively untouched Ross courses. Which living golf course architect could make it better, or, more importantly, more enjoyable? On the 'real' Ross courses I've played, apart from Pinehurst #2, you have to work very hard to bag a lot of big numbers.
Klein's book features details about the man and also discusses several of his courses. There's also a useful directory in the back. The book is also the story of one man's version of The American Dream. Ross arrived here pretty much penniless but managed to build a useful empire through hard work and some smart thinking. The book shows that Ross was a "Canny Scot" who knew how to promote himself and satisfy his clients. Nothing wrong with that. It's a happy story.
It might have been tempting for Klein to get all cuddly with the group that calls itself The Donald Ross Society. I've met some members of said conglomerate, including one of its officers, and they are all a bit full of themselves. Klein mentions the society but it's very much his book, his thoughts, and his ideas. I like books with opinions and character. The book is respectful without being gushy and authoritative without being pompous.
I hope that my buddy at the Donald Ross/Robert Trent Jones golf course that's currently under renovation reads Klein's book. He needs to. So too should anyone who is interested in golf course architecture and wants to know what a real Ross golf course looks like. Hint: it's rarely like Pinehurst #2.
Good Broad Perspective On Donald Ross.......2004-12-02
Whereas Bahto in the Evangelist of Golf is focused on the National more and how it came to define C.B. MacDonald, Brad Klein produces a broad overview of Donald Ross and is less focused on any one aspect of his life and career as a golf designer.
Donald Ross was the Henry Ford of golf design. Some 400 courses confirmed to his credit with, of course, Pinehurst being his crown achievement.
I think this is a solid overview of Donald Ross in general, but I was hoping to really appreciate "why" his courses were so special. We get to understand that for Donald Ross, his routings and greens were some of his strong points. However, the Ross hole and green diagrams along with the course plans only convey so much about this. Yes, they're great but the text I feel isn't in depth enough to really bring out what's buried in the diagrams, plans and pics. Instead, we are exposed to tid bits of some of the more popular courses he's produced. There's an attempt to explain Ross strategies and golf design philosophy in chapter 7, but it's high level and general. I also don't quite grasp why chapter 7 wasn't placed sooner in this book. Maybe I was expecting too much on this. Indeed, this is not a "Confidential Guide" of Ross courses as John Conley states in his earlier review.
At any rate, I think the strengths of this book lie within the quality production, tremendously thorough research (especially when it comes to how Ross did things), very good photographs (especially when it comes to before and after course pictures), and the historical perspective.
The Pinehurst section is very interesting from a background and historical perspective, but you won't learn much about why the course is great.
The renovation / restoration segment is also very informative. Some great pictures illustrate what can happen when proper care is given to a renovation / restoration effort.
There's a nice comprehensive compilation list of Ross's courses, but unfortunately it won't help you figure out which one's you can play. Maybe in the next revision, Klein can indicate which courses are public vs. private. Even tracking back some of the courses within the book won't help either, as you're never too sure which one's are public or private.
Overall, I'd recommend this volume in a heartbeat. Just don't have grand expectations about understanding what makes such and such a Ross course so great. Rather, view this work as a very good and thorough review of what was involved in being Ross the person, family man, hard working course designer, and creator of many great golf courses.
A golf legend comes alive.......2001-12-28
Brad Klein has done a superb job in this lavishly illustrarted story of Donald Ross, long recognized as one the original "founding fathers" of the golden era of golf architecture. While it shows dozens of courses in detail,it is much more than a picture book, since it tells the story of Ross right from his earliest days in Scotland. Klein weaves a very readable and interesting picture of the life and accomplishments of Donald Ross.
The book is well named since it a wonderful journey of discovery. There are all kinds of new insights for even the Ross fans who thought they read everything about DJR. But it will hold the interest of any reader who loves to read about a rich, full life told well. About a man who left Scotland for America without enough money to buy his second meal but who worked so hard he became one of the best paid individuals in all of sports.
And it is about a man who never forgot the meaning of family and his employees.
Brad Klein's book is throughly researched, well written and shows a genuine love for golf and for one of the men who made it great. Mr Klein is on his way to join that list.

A Painstaking Much Awaited Masterpiece.......2001-10-13
There is little doubt of the time and effort it took to reasearch this phenominal book on one of Golf's Great Heroes.
Author Brad Klein gives the reader a inside view of not only who Donald Ross was, what he represents to the game of Golf today, as well as a revealing throwback to an age gone by.
Aerial photos, course diagrams, and other pertinent data show the reader just how much the game's playing grounds have changed, and the effort to hold on to their design critieria as was intended by this soft spoken man from the North of Scotland.
I would highly suggest this book to all who love the game of Golf itself, as well as the courses of Donald Ross; and for those who love golf courses, in general.
Discovering Bradley Klein's Ross.......2001-09-03
In "Discovering Donald Ross," Bradley S. Klein has written a book which can be thumbed through and enjoyed as visual entertainment by the casual golfer/reader or closely studied by the ardent student of the old game. Left on the coffee table or the night stand to be used to fill precious spare minutes with golf-related dreaming, the photos and captions alone will captivate and enlighten the reader. Dr. Klein has revealed himself as a talented photo-journalist, equally comfortable telling the story of Donald Ross with pictures or with words. Be prepared to be educated while being entertained. Using wise delineation of chapter headings, Klein walks us through Ross' childhood, family life, and career to the ultimate reason for the book: the author's knowledge of and desire for preservation of classical, especially Donald Ross, golf courses. Anyone who has the blessing of playing one of Klein's cited courses will understand his devotion. Lovers of biography will be fascinated by Klein's stories of Ross' background and personality. History buffs will learn through clearly written text and old black-and-white photos the problems encountered in golf course constuction as well as the societal and economic limitations that Ross faced. Those who get caught up in beautifully photographed golf landscapes will be captivated by the visual journey from windswept Scottish links where Ross was weaned to America's varying terrain where Ross was to be so successful. Klein's book, like a Ross course, represents a value and pleasure for the user, whether casually approached or closely scrutinized.

Book Description
Few kings more than David I deserve the reputation as “maker” of his kingdom. Although he is overshadowed in popular memory by his descendant, the later “saviour” of Scotland, Robert Bruce, it was David who laid the foundations of the medieval Scottish monarchy and set in motion the changes that created the kingdom that vied with England for mastery of the British Isles. In a reign spanning nearly three decades (1124–53), David moved his kingdom from the periphery towards the heart of medieval European civilization.
