4 out of 5 stars A Handy Little Reference Manual.......1998-05-19

This guide is a quick reference for lots of interesting places to dive in Texas. It provides a nice table at the beginning of each entry giving depth, visibility, water conditions, ease of entry, nearest place to get tanks refilled and suggested dive ability.

Color pictures, both in and out of the water, are provided for practically every dive site listed.

On the strength of this guide, I'll be buying guides from the same publisher to other dive destinations.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide.......2005-12-19

This is an excellent introduction and travel guide to the southern states in and around the Mississippi delta region. It covers Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee along with information on towns and cities such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and many more.

I recently had the opportunity to travel through most of the region covered in the travel guide - before the hurricane in 2004. I drove my car (from Toronto) down through Louisville and into Tennessee, then on to Alabama, Mississippi, making a loop through New Orleans, going north through Louisiana to Baton Rouge and departing the delta into Texas at Shreveport, taking the interstate to Dallas. This whole delta region is a very unusual region. I was intrigued by the vast areas of swamps in southern Louisiana and the elevated interstate highways. These are constructed like continuous bridges elevated above the swamps. This region contains many beautiful southern farms and forests. I was a bit disappointed by New Orleans and think it is a bit over hyped as a tourist destination and it has a reputation of being a bit dangerous after dark. Having said that it does have its own charm, cooking, and unique culture, and it is probably the most interesting spot to visit in this area. It is a city that one does not want to skip.

The book is an excellent and a very well balanced guide. I was pleasantly surprised to use this book as a guide and resource. It has lots of photographs, maps, descriptions of things to see, places of interest, local culture including southern cooking, and more. The book has many things that communicate the unique lifestyle, history, and culture of the region and it makes for an excellent travel reference. All you need is this book and a book of state highways or download a Yahoo trip planner that gives driving instructions. I prefer the map book that are typically 8.5" x 11" that have one state map per page plus the overall intersate guide at the front.

The guide has the usual lists of hotels and restaurants, but I booked my rooms by the internet or just stayed a local places as I found them by car. Book your city hotels in advance. New Orleans and Memphis are sometimes very busy. In any case the restaurant guide is good.

Good buy and I highly recommend.

Covering Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, Lonely Planet provides 69 detailed maps; accommodation options from forest campsites to antebellum plantation mansions; plus history, museums, personalities of the Civil Rights movement, Mississippi blues profiles, clubs, and festivals. The South is a geographically large portion of the country, with terrain that ranges from sunny Gulf coast beaches to Cajun swamps to sugar-cane fields to Appalachian hardscrabble, and for first-time visitors it may feel like a foreign country. It's a good place to have a reliable travel guide, with all the necessary particulars (lodgings, transportation, tourist offices, and liquor laws), plus where to get your pork tenderloin, fried okra, and pecan pie feasts; your hickory-smoked barbecue, corn pone, or shellfish extravaganzas; and your Creole and Cajun comestibles. This guide covers all the bases. Along with comprehensive listings for sightseeing and nightlife, there are interesting sidebars on floating casinos, the etymology of redneck, and a little baseball background on Birmingham's Rickwood Field, plus an introduction to Louisiana's Daiquiri Drive-Thru, where you needn't leave your car to drink and drive. --Stephanie Gold

This is a story from the long-ago days of Colombian marijuana smuggling--long ago, because most of the pot now smoked in the United States is grown domestically, and the top narcotics import from Colombia is cocaine. Author Robert Sabbag tells the tale of Allen Long, who got involved in this unsavory business in the 1970s because he wanted to provide high-quality cannabis for his buddies and also for the sheer adventure of it. Some readers will find Long a disconcerting protagonist--he's a drug smuggler, after all--though it may appeal to advocates of drug legalization and readers of High Times. Sabbag essentially romanticizes Long's activities, such as when he writes about the "rather consoling absence of gunplay" that marked the business of marijuana smuggling in its primitive past. The storytelling is adequate, but parts of Loaded are plainly padded. Here's a bit of sample dialogue: "This is really great pot." "You like that?" "I don't think I've ever smoked anything better." A better and more hardheaded book on Colombian drug smuggling is Mark Bowden's Killing Pablo. --John Miller

          Book Description

Loaded is the true story of a career in the marijuana trade of the 70s, with all the wild ups and downs of the time. Lured equally by adventure and profit, young Allen Long was the first North American smuggler to bring a plane load of Colombian pot back to this country, and the first to capitalize on the growing demand for a steady supply of high quality bud. Longs business quickly grew, bringing him unimaginable riches and the wildest of high times. Sabbag captures, in a spectacular narrative, the thrills of a smugglers careerthe adrenaline and idealism, as well as the perplexities of doing business while perpetually stoned.

5 out of 5 stars Phoney Baloney? .......2007-09-06

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but that doesn't mean everyone has to like other people's opinions everytime. Robert Sabbag is Hot Property and by far one of the best journalist type writer working these days. His account of the "Mari-Jane" Trade is nothing short of spectacular. As much as certain segments of the population might want to criticize all things involving drugs, it is still quite obvious that these stories are highly (and I stress "highly") connected with american culture and also the world. This book is fun to read and captures a period of time where the individuals of this great country attempted and many more times than not, succeeded, in transporting large quantities of "Weed" via sea or air and then selling most of it at a large profit. The curse, of course, is that harder drugs were widely accepted later and consumed by societies around the world and of course, what at first began as a free enterprise later got ugly and I am not getting into it. For the earlier years of the smuggling "craze" Smokescreen does a fine job and Robert Sabbag either by first hand or second hand knowledge captures an entire period with a specially acute sense of humor. For that I give it a 5 star rating, anything less would be "uncivilized".

          5 out of 5 stars Smokescreen: A True Adventure.......2006-11-10

This was by far the best book I have ever read. Every time I picked it up I read at least three chapters. I felt like I was really there and that I had actually met the characters. The author gives great detail but in a way that does not at all bore you. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it!!!

          2 out of 5 stars Phoney baloney.......2005-09-25

Looks like Robert Sabbag couldn't let his sucess with Snowblind be. This book just sucks. I know Allen Long and his story is true, the smuggling, the four years as someones maid in prison but Robert Sabbag just got sloppy with this one. He tried to take a mediocre story and make it into something interesting; didn't work.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential reading if you like this genre..........2005-03-05

The author Robert Sabbag has this scene nailed down. I thought I had read, or maybe even lived it all. No sir. This book "jacks it up" to new levels of adreneline pumping. These characters had balls. Big ones. And it is really fun to read about people like that.

The opening, where a DC-3 is barely making it to the Columbian border at sunrise after a few days of flight is second to none. One of the best and tightest openings to any book I have ever read. Where is the movie???

          Thank you, Mr. Sabbag

          5 out of 5 stars Loaded.......2004-09-24

I guess they changed the title of this book at some point -- the copy I got from the library was called "Loaded, A Misadventure In the Marijuana Trade". At any rate, forget any tepid reviews by "professional" reviewers who somehow feel this story wasn't quite up to their literary standards. The book is just a flat out great read and had me laughing out loud many times. A hilarious but cautionary tale with a serious ending, the adventures of pot smuggler Allen Long are so far out there that you know they must be true. Any baby boomer who did time in the counter culture of the 60s and 70s, or who is familiar with the drug culture of that era will get a big kick out of this book, and I'd think many younger readers would enjoy it as well.

Allen Long was a man of immense ability, ambition and personal charm, as well as a natural leader... who also loved to smoke the best pot he could find. He probably would have been successful in any field but some people need to take the road less travelled. Long was the man responsible for Columbian marijuana coming to the US (millions of tons of it). I got the impression that he was as much a crusader for marijuana as he was in it for the money, at least in the beginning. The first part of the book is almost like a Cheech & Chong screenplay, with multi-million dollar deals and hair-raising scenarios being improvised by people who stay as stoned-out as possible at all times; but by the end the gangsters have moved in, the trade has turned to cocaine, and the intial hippie-capitalist spirit has vanished, to be replaced with cutthroat competition, greed and violence. Long never has the heart to become a gangster and is eventually squeezed out of the business by the more ruthless and hungry Latin Americans. It's a look at a particular part of era that hasn't often been told, and certainly never told in such a thoroughly entertaining manner. Thumbs up all the way.

Alot of information from choosing the right parrot, taking care of it, training, and health. Very helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Solid but Generic.......2000-01-19

There is very little to take issue with in this book-- but if you didn't know the title you might just as well think you were reading a book on Amazons, Greys, or any number of other parrots. The information is extremely generic with the exception of a few passages here and there. I really don't think this is the author's fault- and the info is useful- but if you want a really good feeling for what it's like to own a QUAKER- you should also buy Mattie Sue Athan's outstanding book. That said, the one thing I do object to here is this author's claim that any household with cats and Quakers should have the cats declawed. That may be fair to the birds but is an incredible injustice to the felines. If you can't keep them separate, you might be better off not having one or the other. Overall, a solid book but if I didn't already have a Quaker this book would not have shown me how amazing these birds are! They are incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the novice bird owner.......1999-03-06

When I first bought my Quaker, I didn't know the first thing about parrots. Fortunately for both of us he was so young he couldn't come home yet. I bought this book and read every page religiously. She gave me so much insight into what my bird would behave like, look like, eat, want, you name it. Her writing was easy to read and understand. She herself owns Quakers, so she is accustomed to their behavior, behavior problems, quirks, eating habits, likes, dislikes, etc. By the time I was done reading the book, I felt like the expert; from cage purchase to food selection to an attention schedule. My bird and I are a happy family now, and I still refer to my book when I need help. I highly recommend it to any Quaker Parrot owner.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for New or Prospective Quaker Owner.......1998-03-31

An experienced parrot owner and breeder myself, I found little to disagree with in this book. Ms. Higdon's writing is clear, informative, and easy to understand. She obviously knows her subject, and she writes well. Her sly but gentle sense of humor is evident and enjoyable. The information presented is accurate, up-to-date, and covers most of the things a new Quaker owner will need to know. She portrays the personality and characteristics of the Quaker quite well and makes several excellent points, such as the fact that talking ability should be a secondary rather than primary concern when choosing a parrot for a pet, that are seldom made in other books. The focus of this book is quite different from Theresa Jordan's handbook - it contains no information pertaining to breeding and may not be of interest to the breeder or experienced Quaker owner. If, however, you have newly acquired a Quaker or are considering getting one, I would highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Decent for youth and under-educated, but..........2003-12-30

Ms Rach seems to have tried a bit too hard to write a book for youth but seems to think you talk down to them.

A fine try and the book does have a good deal of specific information but the detail is in all the wrong places to be of much interest to me.

Better to buy THE AFRICAN GREY PARROT HANDBOOK, or KEEPING AFRICAN GREY PARROTS.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! I love this book!.......2001-06-21

This is the bestest book I ever readed in my whole life! Yeah, that's the ticket! I have one to sell, please buy it! PLEASE! Once I sell it, I will post my actual thoughts on this wonderful wack job... I mean expert of african greys.

The greatest advice in the entire world. Like, this book opened my eyes and made me think just like the bird does. Yeah, that's it! That's the ticket! I can speak African Grey now, because I read this wonderful book. Did I mention I am selling this book? Oy, chock full of information and history and will make you suicidal ... er I mean an expert!

1 out of 5 stars Now days, anybody can call themselves an "Expert".......2001-06-08

This woman is a wack job at best. This book should be titled "The Adventures of my African Grey Sinbad!" The book is based on her bird and what little knowledge she has. You can learn more by spending 30 minutes with the guy at Petco or Petsmart. Want a good book on Parrots? Look up Mattie S. Athan!

She gives tips in her book, then on the next page the tip goes against what she just said on the last page! For instance: Don't buy a galvanized cage for fear of poisoning. Next page tells you to let it play with a nut and bolt. HELLO! Galvanized! One page says they are creatures of routine and let it get one. The next page says don't let it get into routine. Now days anybody can get published. THe book is more about her bird who she loves so much but is nutz. Her bird is crazy, bottom line. If you buy this book, keep it in the bathroom :) Just ... incase.

            1 out of 5 stars Good for a story and that's it.!.......2000-05-20

The book is well written I can't deny that.. but the author seems too obsessed with her female Grey called Sinbad.. she doesn't even know that Sinbad is an Arabic name for males and not females. The photos indicate that the author is fond of cheap as most of the cages portrayed are offensively so. She even recommends that Birds be allowed to play with Screws and Bolts for toys.

            3 out of 5 stars good.......2000-02-07

4 out of 5 stars Arthur Freud has written an informative book that gives basic information about parrots as pets........2006-09-28

He starts off by explaining a bit about parrots in general, then goes on to talk about the history of parrot keeping. He goes from the wild caught birds that used to be kept as pets leading up to the hand fed birds, or at least domestically raised birds, that are now the only acceptable way of obtaining a parrot for a pet.

He gives information geared toward helping a prospective bird owner, decide which type of bird would be right for him or her, by giving general descriptions of habits, sizes & noise levels of some of the more commonly kept parrots. He has also provided good clear pictures of the birds that he profiled.

The chapter on housing provides good information on cages, perches, dishes, toys and food. The next chapter goes into more detail on the food requirements of parrots.

Throughout the book, Mr. Freud has several little side boxes where he goes into more detail on a certain aspect of what he has written about.

This book has excellent information and tips for someone just thinking about obtaining a first bird, but it also has information that current bird owners would find interesting.

1 out of 5 stars The WORST of all Barbie Book Series!.......2003-01-25

If you have any love of the English language, and are able to tell good photographs from bad ones, you will truly dislike all of the books by this woman that I have read, including Barbie Exclusives volumes 1, 2 and 3. The text is virtually unreadable, almost completely devoid of any real information, and is generally a painful experience. The photographs are almost equally bad, ranging from grainy yellowish shots, to lovely ones in which box-front glare almost obliterates any details of the doll inside. Truly, you can do much better than this series! Try the Collector's Encyclopedia of Barbie Doll Exclusives and More by J. Michael Augustyniak.

            Book Description

From artifacts to literature, music, and most recently, dance, Americans are fascinated by things Irish. Irish Gardens introduces an evocative portrait of 20 of the most beautiful gardens found on the Emerald Isle.

More than 220 color photos, paintings, and garden plans are utilized brilliantly to tell stories and to reveal design and planting secrets that combine to create a particular ambiance. Examples are historic sites such as Mount Stewart in County Down, wild romantic paradises such as Ilnacullen in Bantry Bay, and traditional walled vegetable gardens like Kinoith in Cork.

The stories behind the gardens inform as they entertain. Local color spices the history. Discover how herbs came to be imported from Tasmania, Japan, and China. Then follow these herbs to the Mallymaloe Cookery School in Kinoith, and (some say) the consequent revival of tasty cooking in Ireland. Anxious about a neighbor's lustful glances at your spouse? You might find inspiration in Belvedere's "Jealous Wall."

Irish Gardens illustrates, in grand manner, why Ireland well deserves its distinguished reputation as "the Garden of Europe."

We had the good fortune to first see Fitzgerald's book while staying at Glin Castle along the River Shannon (Olda Fitzgerald's residence). This garden is one of many spectacular pieces featured. Walking through the actual garden was a walk through a bit of heaven. The photos in the book will serve as a beautiful reminder of what all that rain in Ireland can do to a piece of well cared for earth.

Gardens of Ireland depicts the lush beauty of other places that will take priority on my "must see" list if I'm lucky enough to return to Ireland. Enjoy!

            Book Description

Linda Dillow gracefully and succinctly motivates Christian women to reach for more than they are currently experiencing in their marriages. She includes creative suggestions on how to encourage your husband, live above your circumstances, and develop a plan whereby you can begin to become the woman, wife, and mother that you long to be. She describes a creative counterpart as being more than just a helper. She is a woman who, having chosen (or having found herself in) the vocation of wife and mother, decides to learn and grow in all the areas of this role and to work as though she were aiming for the presidency of a corporation. Also included is a Bible study and project guide, which work perfectly for personal study or small group interaction.

I am really enjoying this book. I can tell this will be the type of book I'd read over and over again. Linda Dillow is so "real" and uses so much scripture in her examples and applications to living the Christian woman's life.

            4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-07-25

I did enjoy this book, however I only gave 4/5 stars because it did not focus much on becoming the "Mother You Have Longed to Be." It did had many good points about being a "creative counterpart" in relation to being a wife.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing and Marriage changing..........2007-04-10

I have read many books on how to be a better wife and this is the only one that doesn't make me chaff! Linda puts it all together in a beautiful format that causes you to strife to be a better counterpart!

            5 out of 5 stars A gift from God.......2005-08-26

I stumbled upon this book completely by accident. Shortly before our wedding, I was helping my then-fiance pack up some items for storage. I found this book stashed in his bookcase. A family friend had given this book to his first wife in effort to help them work on their marriage and find Christ again. Unfortunately for both of them, she wasn't interested in leading a Christian life and their marriage ended. Thankfully, this book found it's way into my hands shortly before our wedding, and it provided me with excellent pool-side reading during our honeymoon. This book has been a blessing in my life and I re-read it every few months for renewed conviction and encouragement. Mrs. Dillow is a fantastic author; this book is an easy read that is honest and very practical. I give this book as a gift at every bridal shower I attend.

5 out of 5 stars Pick this one!.......2005-01-09

I have read nearly a dozen books on growing as a wife and/or mother in the past two years, and this is by far the best overall book I have come accross. Dillow writes in a very concise, purposeful and poignant way. Dillow consitently writes the best study questions I have seen in women's books. They are thoughtful, challenging and always very practical. Dillow is both practical and deeply theological.

Chapter 4, called "priority planner" provides the best organizational scheme for ordering your daily life and home that I have seen. I have always been very organized, but Dillows plan took my daily routine to another level - a much more peaceful and fruitful one. I especially recommend this book for moms with several small children who have very little time, or with women who are making home their full time job for the first time and need some help learning how to self manage their time 24-7.

I suggest grabbing your best friend or two and reading this book together, following the study guide in the back. Most of us need the accountability and friendship to process the deep and challenging things that Dillow presents in this classic book. This book would work very well as a curriculum for a church class. Our church also uses it for 1 - 1 mentorship.

            Book Description

This second volume of Cecil Beaton’s unexpurgated diaries, from 1965 to 1969, catches this prolific photographer, artist, writer and designer at the height of his powers and at the center of everything. And no wonder–as Oliver Smith, the set designer for My Fair Lady, said, he “had more energy than anyone I’ve ever known.” Hugo Vickers, the author of Beaton’s acclaimed biography, went back to the original manuscripts to find the unedited material in order to sidestep Beaton’s endless retouching and has added, as with the first volume of unexpurgated Beaton, fascinating notes that are as lively as the diary entries themselves.

Here is Beaton around the world, always in the hot spots of the moment: during the “swinging sixties” in London, photographing the Queen, doing fashion shoots for British Vogue, and having lunch with Noël Coward and dinner with Cyril Connolly. He is in Morocco with the Rolling Stones; in the Greek islands for a cruise on Cécile de Rothschild’s yacht with his former lover, Garbo; in New York attending Truman Capote’s Black-and-White Ball; at work on Alan Jay Lerner and André Previn’s musical Coco with Katharine Hepburn and on La Traviata with Anna Moffo at the Met–he is even caught in the first big New York City blackout; he is at a dinner for President Lyndon Johnson and invited for tea and caviar with Jacqueline Onassis. He’s in Mougins to photograph Picasso, and then off to Monaco to see Princess Grace, among many other adventures.

The eccentric English aesthete Stephen Tennant called Beaton “a self-created genius.” Though he came out of the Edwardian era, Beaton was a modern polymath with a ferocious drive to be famous, and these diaries reflect his success at working with the most celebrated and creative figures. Reverential, testy, ebullient and acutely observed, they present us with the fascinating minutiae not only of one life but of the best part of a dazzling decade.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of celebrity life in the 60s.......2004-12-23

Cecil Beaton was a man of many talents - photographer, costume designer, set decorator - and you can now add to that list - a gifted writer. He apparently had a photographic memory and he recorded the details of his life in vivid detail, recalling not only physical descriptions but verbatim dialog as well. When he wasn't working, he was usually on extended vacations, traveling to exotic locales as the guest of the rich and famous. Although he is often suffering from poor health, he presses on and never fails to write in an entertaining fashion, branding everyone he comes in contact with his witty and bitchy style but nevertheless, offering an illuminating analysis of their character as well.

Among the celebrities dissed here are Greta Garbo - he and several others spent a two week cruise with her - but the unhappy Garbo was apparently determined to make everyone as miserable as she was. Truman Capote, a good friend of Beatons', enjoying immense success after the publication of "In Cold Blood," which contributes to his downward spiral with drugs. Most surprising is his assessment of Katharine Hepburn. The last pages of the page detail his tormented experiences on the set of the musical "Coco," starring Hepburn, who, in his opinion, wasn't concerned with anyone or anything but herself. Other celebrities getting wide attention is Mick Jagger, Picasso, Princess Grace, David Warner, Laurence Olivier and many many more.

If anything aside from the gossip, the diaries show how demanding and stressful the life of showbiz really is.

There's George Meany, Bronx-born, tough-as-nails president of the AFL-CIO, who expelled the Teamsters Union for its mob affiliations. And Eugene O'Neill, the great Irish American playwright whose face streamed with tears as he probed his tortured family memories to write Long Day's Journey into Night. Robert Emmet is there, the Irish rebel who fought for Ireland's freedom, was betrayed by a spy, and hung for treason at the age of 25, as is St. Brigid, a.k.a. Mary of the Gael--patron saint of students and dairy workers--who continued the work of St. Patrick in spreading Christianity throughout Ireland. The Irish 100 includes these plus 96 more Irish and Irish American individuals, all profiled by Tom Philbin in pithy 800-word biographical sketches.

With historic stalwarts such as Michael Collins and Charles Stewart Parnell, Joseph P. Kennedy and Margaret Sanger, Ulysses S. Grant and James K. Polk, plus Mother Jones, Henry Ford, Walt Disney, Joseph McCarthy and Cyrus McCormick, Philbin's collection features a remarkably interesting assortment of personalities and accomplishments. His book would be well worth the browse, even if that were all he aspired to achieve, but Philbin's goals are far more ambitious, and controversial, than that. He opted for the 100 most influential Irish of all time, and then ranked them, first to last. Talk about fodder for discourse and dissent! Jonathan Swift makes the list--but as number 50, well after Rachel Carson, who ranks 14. Samuel Beckett squeaks in at number 91, right after Frank McCourt, and more than 50 spots later than Ronald Reagan (ranked number 34). Toss this book into a circle of historians or Ireland enthusiasts, and discussion is sure to follow--just one more credit in Philbin's favor. Any book that sparks that much thought and debate is a rare success.

Philbin speaks freely in his introduction about the impossible task he set himself, and how the criterion of influence brought certain names to the fore, while effacing other individuals of greater fame but arguably lesser lasting effect. And whether you agree with every selection, omission, and ranking, it's hard to dispute that Philbin's Irish compendium is intellectually and emotionally engaging, a scholarly work that incites contemplation, education, and interest. --Stephanie Gold

            5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book!.......2007-03-05

I read it in less than a day and thought it was wonderful! Makes me proud/scared to be Irish! LOL

5 out of 5 stars Super for Irish American heritage.......2002-07-25

As an Irish-American, I found this book to be both informative and entertaining.
The previous review should be removed from Amazon as an affront to all Americans of Irish ancestry. To deny a person their ethnicity simply because their parents or grandparents were forced to leave their homeland due to economic hardship is surely a cruel and unnecessary evil. Just because I have lived my life in St. Olaf doesn't make my Irishness any less valid than Andrea Corr's.

1 out of 5 stars Excoriation of an Abomination.......2002-07-23

Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful. This book is an abomination. The writing throughout is amateurish. The selection is dubious, with such figures as Brian Boru and James Connolly omitted. The book contains laughable inaccuracies. On the diet of a typical Irishman at the time of the famine: "And how many potatoes, on the average, did he eat per day? About fourteen pounds[!]". No wonder there was a potato famine - the natives' appetites were insatiable! On George Bernard Shaw's longevity: "He had become a vegetarian in 1881 after reading a book by Shelley called _A Vindication of Natural Diet_ (1913)" Shaw may have been more prescient than most, but surely the ability to see into the future was beyond even him. On Yeats confusing birthplace: "Yeats was born in Sandymount, a seaside suburb of Dublin, County Sligo". Those among my readers not fortunate enough to be Irish will need of course to be informed that there is no such place. Perhaps it exists only in Yeat's faery escapes? My favorite blunder is the following: "Important American writers of this century, such as James Joyce [!]....". Now, it is quite one thing to list Americans with a modicum of Irish blood in their veins as Irish, but even I am baffled as to how Joyce could be considered an American. And while I am on the point, any book that purports to select a list of famous Irish would do well to define what it means to be Irish. I would humbly suggest that spending some portion of one's life in the country would be considered a necessary, if minimal, qualification. Such undeniably important personages as Walt Disney, Ulysses S. Grant, and Ronald Reagan undoubtedly deserve recognition in scholarly works, but this book is undoubtedly not one, and they are undeniably American. Of course, so is the author, and there lies the rub. An Irish American is no more Irish than a Danish pastry is from Denmark. The author would have done well to have kept that in mind.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, if Controversial, Overview of Irish.......2000-08-08

Any compilation such as this is bound to create controversy and dispute but I found it a valuable introductory overview of notable Irishmen and women through the ages. The rankings, of course, are always open to question--personally I can't quarrel with them much although there are some inaccuracies (e.g., that the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were hanged--they were shot). Nonetheless, this is an interesting, informative way to introduce readers (especially younger ones) to their Irish heritage without overwhelming them with details.

            2 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment!.......2000-04-15

First of all, how a book of the most influential Irish of all time could be written without including the Ard Ri,Brian Boru is beyond me. St.Patrick was listed as number one and he wasn't even Irish! Michael Collins should have been first if you leave out King Brian. The Kennedey's were of course listed again...I don't care where their ancestors came from....The Kennedeys are NOT IRISH! Margaret Sanger making the top 10 was an abomination and is a smack in the face to all Irish Catholics. As a brief biological sketch of famous Irish people and those of possible Irish descent...it's not a bad book. However, the ranking system left much to be desired! Mindless fluff for Americans who think they're Irish and wannabees to read while they drink green beer and eat corned beef and cabbage on Saint Patrick's Day!
