We would have never made it in Boston without this little book! The maps alone, especially the subway map, were worth well over the price of the book. We took the book everywhere we went and had a blast. It offers great advice about what to see, what not to see, places to shop, places to stay, places to eat, and anything else you can imagine. I also liked that it gave information on day trips to surrounding areas. I would recomend this book to anyone visiting Boston for the first time. We were there for two days and were able to see everything we wanted to see!!

    Book Description

Fuelled by outrage at his arrest in December 1997 by MoD police, Milos Stankovic, a major in the Parachute Regiment of the British Army and the son of a Royalist Serb, decided to write his extraordinary story: a dramatic tale of life on the edge in war-ravaged Bosnia. His life was constantly at risk; nevertheless, he ran a 'Schindler's List' operation, smuggling families (Serb, Croat or Muslim) out of besieged Sarajevo. His arrest came as a thunderbolt. What lay behind it will be revealed in the book and will ignite an international controversy.

5 out of 5 stars My view of Trusted Mole.......2005-01-13

This book is by far, as Sunday Times put it, the best book to have come out of the Balkan War. I am a Serb myself, from Bosnia, and even though I do not approve of some Author's opinions and thoughts, I have to say that this book is most sincere that has ever been written on Yugoslav wars.
I like the book for there is no much preaching in it, no deep politics whatsoever, but true story and his perceptions. I think Mr.Stankovic is one of the very few people in this world that was able to describe and depict all the Balkan's hell due to his origins and background. To be honest, what I liked the best in this book were parts where the Author himself tries to perceive or understand something, which is quite normal or commonplace in Serbs' lives and culture, but fails for he grew up in the UK.
Nevertheless, the book is simply great! Well done, Milos Stankovic! Svaka cast!

    2 out of 5 stars Valuable, but..........2002-01-06

As General Mike Rose's interpreter, Stankovic had a front-row seat to key events in Bosnia. Those observations alone are worth getting the book. Alas, if only they formed even a scant majority of it.

Informed readers should be ready for some double-takes... and disappointments.

    1. Stankovic's grasp of the Bosnian situation is simplistic and at times woefully ignorant. He declares that there was no separate "Muslim" ethnicity in Bosnia until the Western media created it, showing his ignorance of a crucial factor behind the Bosnian wars: the 1974 Consitution and Muslims-as-consituent-nationality issue. He recounts "rescuing" Sarajevans by "slipping" them out in official vehicles, clueless that he and other well-meaning UN personnel were doing the belligerents' ethnic cleansing for them ...and strengthening the Bosnian Serb hand. Perhaps most shockingly, he takes as gospel the Serbs' good faith behind an early "offer" to yield territory later for a cease-fire today. ...Stankevic slams the international community for not jumping on this supposed perfect opportunity.

    2. .... His boss General Rose can do no wrong: even Rose's most naive and disastrous moves are depicted with something approaching hero worship. To Stankevic, it's unfailingly "us" (U.N., Britain, Rose) good, "them" (NATO, America, Wesley Clark) bad...Prepare for plenty of adolescent swagger and sneer.... Stankevic simply cannot separate himself from his subject. Any personal angle changes everything. He calls the thoughtful and respected U.S. ambassador John Menzies a "pro-Muslim fanatic," offering no reason for this intriguing characterisation except that Menzies apparently once questioned his judgement. Though he derides the idea that his Serb ancestry affected the performance of his duties, and indeed can criticise the Bosnian Serbs, he appears incapable of ever viewing the Muslim leadership with anything but cold suspicion or painting Izetbegovic et al in any but the most sinister colours.

    4. Okay, it's a sideshow, but I for one would like to know the rest of the story behind his arrest. His introduction leaves him in a jail cell from which we never see him released. Was he ever exonerated? Fined? Sentenced? We're never given the opportunity to judge whether his detainment made any sense. We're simply to take his word that it was a trumped-up load of bureaucratic hysteria.

So if you're a subject expert, buy the book. You'll be able to make sense of what Stankevic witnessed, even if he obviously can't. If you're new to the Bosnian conflict, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Another glorious failure.......2001-12-09

As someone who was in the balkans at the same time as "Mike Stanley" i saw the same hopeless situation that the UN was placed into without the wholehearted support of the world community. To say that the UN is hopelessly bearucratic is to simplify the entire situation. The UN and UNPROFOR could not take resolute action against any of the 3 sides under the mandate which had been issued by the security council. a lack of wilingness on the part of the major members of the UN especially the USA to bolster the the presence of the UN and the forces which were there to PROTECT UN personnel NOT the indigenous population and the fact that the USA wanted to arm the croat and bosnian goverments against the wishes of the UN. This book shows the futility of sending military forces into an enviroment and expecting them to act as saviours to a population which are hell bent on butchering their neighbours mostly with arms provided by the good old US of A.The most inportant point from this book was that the UN is not and has never been a military organisation due in part to the intransigence of the superpowers at the end of WW2.The UN was not to blame for the war in the Balkans and as much as some countries have tried to militarise it this book shows that this is not only practically impossible but fundamentally dangerous.'Trusted mole' talks about world politics from the perspective of the balkans and it shows just how thin is the veneer of civilisation when it comes down to it .

5 out of 5 stars An insight into the day-to-day reality of the war in BiH.......2001-08-07

This book is quite simply brilliant. In painstaking detail, Stankovic relates his experiences during two tours in Bosnia as part of the British UN presence during the war.

This is no "advocacy" literary piece. There are no sentimental biases or hidden agendas - it's so refreshing to read something which just sticks to the facts and tells the story as it is. As an Australian of part Serbian heritage I totally understood the "mentality" that Stankovic tried to convey, he did it so well, but unfortunatly I think this "mentality" is so foreign to your average westerner that a lot of the true gems of this book would be lost on them. Nonetheless, Stankovic has attempted to articulate it, and once you understand this "mentality" that drives the people of the Balkans, you will start to see why this war happened. That is not to justify the horrors of the last ten years in any way, shape or form - but I feel that this innate understanding of the "mentality" is what is perhaps lacking from most books on the subject.

It's a great read. Stankovic has portrayed the nitty gritty reality of the war in Bosnia, and provides an insight into the lives of the "little people" and the behind-the-scenes players that we otherwise never hear about because it's not newsworthy enough, or won't fit into someone's colour-by-numbers view of what is going over there... Or quite simply does not suit whoever's agenda.

This book is an important read for anyone with a serious interest in recent Balkan history. After being falsely slapped with charges of espionage and his military career in tatters, Stankovic has written a probably the best and most important book on the Bosnian war. Put it at the top of your reading list.

    4 out of 5 stars spellbinding.......2001-06-25

This is the true story behind the true stories of the wars in bosnia. The Author was there for most of the major incidents, if you want to learn what a worthless and beauacratic organisation the UN is read this, Stankovic should be bemedaled and a general bynow, His descriptions of Sarajevo and surrounding areas was spot on and his description of the " little people " describing the ordinary people of the city and his journeys to the " dark side " remind me strongly of my time there. I have read most of the modern books detailing the Balkan conflict and I always assumed that martin Bell wrote the best one but now Bell is in second place. My one wish is that he writes the follow up and lets us all know who placed the spying charges against him and why and how did it all end. to summarise get the book now

          Book Description

One frosty winter morning, Jennifer Vogel opened the newspaper and read that her father had gone on the run. John Vogel, fifty-two, had been arrested for single-handedly counter-feiting nearly $20 million in U.S. currency -- the fourth-largest sum ever seized by federal agents -- and then released pending trial. Though Jennifer hadn't spoken to her father in more than four years, the police suspected he might turn up at her Minneapolis apartment. She examined the shadows outside her building, thought she spotted him at the grocery store and the bus stop. He had simply vanished.

Framed around the six months her father eluded authorities, Jennifer's memoir documents the police chase -- stakeouts, lie detector tests, even a segment on Unsolved Mysteries -- and vividly chronicles her tumultuous childhood while examining her father's legacy. A lifelong criminal who robbed banks, burned down buildings, scammed investors, and even plotted murder, John Vogel was also a hapless dreamer who wrote a novel, baked lemon meringue pies, and took his ten-year-old daughter to see Rocky in an empty theater on Christmas Eve. When it came time to pass his counterfeit bills, he spent them at Wal-Mart for political reasons.

Culling from memories, photo albums, public documents, and interviews with the handful of people who knew the real John Vogel, Jennifer has created an intensely moving psychological portrait of a charismatic, larger-than-life figure -- a father who loved her and whom, in spite of everything, she loved back.

4 out of 5 stars Shows the Duality of Man.......2004-05-07

A brilliant book that captures the essence that both good and evil exist in a single person. A criminal and con-artist who is an enemy to victims is a loving father and husband away from that life. It has the same complexity of character that Rikki Lee Travolta used to dissect the actor's life as both nepotistic and self-aggrandizing but counterbalanced with fear and insecurity in his book "My Fractured Life." Jennifer Vogel's dissection of the real man behind the conman is just as moving and equally as poignant. A highly recommended book.

          5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down!.......2004-04-05

Gorgeously written, highly compelling. Jennifer Vogel is a deeply complex woman who understood her deeply complex father in a mystical way. This book is riveting. I read it cover to cover in one sitting. One of the best memoirs I've ever read, right up there with ANGELA'S ASHES and CHANGE ME INTO ZEUS' DAUGHTER.

          5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2004-03-09

What I thought would be a kind of cute, whimsical tale about a lovable rogue and his gifted but troubled daughter turned out to be the most compelling story I've ever read about the complex and often conflicted relationships between parents and children. The author is an extremely talented writer who is not the least bit afraid of exploring those internal areas that are sometimes better off ignored. I laud her for sharing so much of herself and her family, and only hope that writing this book was as cathartic for her as reading it was for me. It is rare that a book has such a profound effect on me, but this one blew me away.

5 out of 5 stars A Moving, Interesting and Highly Recommended Debut.......2004-03-07

Jennifer Vogel's dad was not like other dads. Sure he loved Jennifer and her siblings, remembered birthdays, took them fishing and on vacations. But John Vogel was a criminal, a conman and a crook. In FLIM-FLAM MAN Jennifer Vogel shares the story of her complicated relationship with her father --- his life of crime and secrecy, his affection for her and his bloody death at the end of a police chase almost a decade ago.

Estranged from her father for years when he died, Vogel's guilt and sadness fuel this memoir. And so does her love for him and her understanding of his outlaw ways. She tries to get closer to him by examining his childhood (his father was absent and his mother emotionally distant) and his other relationships. Still, this is not a family history in the traditional sense. Vogel gives the reader sketches, impressions of her family more so than details and facts. The result is emotional, fascinating and quite personal.

Vogel's parents divorced when she was a child. Her mother, left to raise three children alone, was the disciplinarian. Her father's mystique grew. The children spent summers with him, driving in his fancy Cadillacs, spending time at his cabin, entertaining guests and having fun. But over the years Vogel pieced together truths about her father. Her mother told her early on that he was delinquent in his child support. To Vogel, his gifts and personality seemed to make up for this somehow. Yet how was she to balance out his other crimes such as arson? And how was she to make sense of the fact that her father had served prison time as a young man for a violent crime? Or what about his justification to rob a corporate retail chain for sociopolitical reasons by creating and passing counterfeit money? Or the armed bank robberies? How could his rap sheet sum up the creative and eccentric man she knew and loved?

It is not just Vogel's father's faults that are laid bare. Jennifer Vogel exposes herself as well. Despite his shortcomings, or perhaps because of them, Vogel felt a propinquity with her father's life of crime; she understood the need to subvert the system and had a distrust of authority. She eventually channels those tendencies in a way her father was never able to, and as she grew up she steered clear of the choices and mistakes her father made.

Moving between childhood scenes and 1995, the year her father was on the run from the FBI and Federal Marshals, Vogel tells the tale of her family with honesty and even humor. At first glance this appears to be a family unlike most, but she proves they share much in common with families across America. FLIM-FLAM MAN is the poignant story of a challenging father-daughter relationship. It is also about the struggle for the American dream: in John Vogel there was a not uncommon sense of alienation coupled with the not uncommon sense of entitlement. Here we read about a man who makes disastrous and dangerous choices his entire life, yet is also a loving and charming father. It is easy to understand why Vogel is so conflicted about him.

This is not exactly a book about forgiveness or recovery or anything quite as simple as that. Jennifer Vogel's short book is emotionally complicated but a joy to read. Both the joy and the complication seems a fitting tribute to the man presented in its pages: a loving and lovable father, and a career criminal. FLIM-FLAM MAN is a moving, interesting and highly recommended debut.

I just read the book and have to admit that I was very pleasantly surprised. I bought it on a whim and was expecting a romaticized, self-absorbed account of the author's experience. Instead, I found the book to tell an honest, well-balanced account of her life, her father's story, and its implications. It's rare that someone in Jennifer's shoes happens to be a great writer; usually, ghost writers have to write for people who have such a story to tell. That Jennifer is so well equipped to tell her story makes this book a pleasure to read.

I purchased this manual only to find out that the element 2 test expired in July of 2007. I subsequently purchased "The ARRL HAM RADIO LICENSE MANUAL" which contains the question pool beginning July 1,2006.
              This is an excellent manual.

If you want to actually know why the answers are what they are on the test, instead of just taking practice test after practice test and trying to memorize answers, then you NEED this book. I wasn't satisfied just taking the practice tests online and memorizing answers, so I bought this book - learned the information - and almost got a perfect score on the FCC's technicians class test. Most people I know, who didn't buy any books, barely passed. What kind of a score do you want?

"Now You're Talking" (NYT) is a great resource for anyone seeking a Technician class license -- the first step in the hobby of Amateur Radio. In simple, straightforward language, you'll learn all you need to know in order to pass the FCC's 35-question Technician class examination. The entire FCC question pool, along with correct answers and text references, is included, so there'll be no surprises when you walk into the examination room. As an added plus, you'll find references to many other resources that provide valuable information about the Amateur Radio Service and assistance in becoming a ham.

After a thorough study of NYT, I completed a computer-based review of Technician class exam questions using the "Ham University" CD available through the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) just prior to taking the exam. As a result, I maxxed the exam and received my Technician class license a few days later.

A caution--make sure you are using the current, 5th edition of NYT to prepare for your exam. In addition, the current question pool is due to expire on June 30, 2006, so you'll want to complete your Technician class exam before then or wait until the 6th edition of NYT is published.

Easy reading for this type of topic. A very helpful and needed companion to Gordon West's Technician Class book. You won't be sorry that you bought it.

I passed the Technician's exam only missing 1 of 35 questions with this book. The book is also an excellent source for reference. The complete question set for the Technician's exam is presented with references to page numbers explaining the answers. Other books focus on "memorizing" the test questions. This book promotes understanding the subject matter while studying for the exam. Must have book for all preparing for the Amateur Technician's License Exam.

                  Book Description

Whether it is chosen or thrust upon you, change brings both opportunities and turmoil. Since first published 25 years ago, Transitions has helped hundreds of thousands of readers cope with these issues by providing an elegantly simple yet profoundly insightful roadmap of the transition process. With the understanding born of both personal and professional experience, William Bridges takes readers step by step through the three stages of any transition: The Ending, The Neutral Zone, and, in time, The New Beginning. Bridges explains how each stage can be understood and embraced, leading to meaningful and productive movement into a hopeful future. With a new introduction highlighting how the advice in the book continues to apply and is perhaps even more relevant today, and a new chapter devoted to change in the workplace, Transitions will remain the essential guide for coping with the one constant in life: change.

                  5 out of 5 stars Transitions.......2007-10-12

This is an excellent book for anyone going through a significant change in their life. It accurately describes the feelings and confusion you may be having and talks about how to proceed to a successful completion of the change process. Very encouraging and optomistic.

5 out of 5 stars Bridging a unfathomable Gap in our life from work to retirement.......2007-07-17

It is now almost fifteen years since I entered into the challenging world of retirement. In no time at all, I found myself emulating the comment of another retiree to the effect that he was busier in retirement than he ever had been! At one of my retirement dinner ceremonies, a young lady came up to me and said, "Thank you for all that you have done and I think that you will find this book quite interesting!" I read the book in the next few days and its wisdom and humor have been with me ever since. It has so much to give to us beyond retirement!
Since that time I would say that I have easily given away to my "retiring friends" at least forty copies of this book. Each time I have echoed the words of the original giver with the additional request to let me know what their reactions were. The unanimous sentiment was that the book provided so many helpful insights and now they are giving it away as well.
I would only emphasize one point that is made in the book, we need to plan ahead for this event of retirement. It is not something we just step into having closed the door to our office.

Bill Bridges does a great job of helping folks though the major transitions in life - job changes, marriage/divorce/death, having a child. I've used this book as a foundation for helping people who are out of work deal with the uncertainty and feelings of loss so they are in a better position to find and get that new job. This is a gift book for all your friends who are facing a transition.

                  5 out of 5 stars Very insightful........2007-02-13

On behalf of the millions of us facing major life changes such as retirement or the loss of a parent or spouse, I found this book to be timely and very helpful in explaining the 'transition' to a different life paradigm. And what a relief to know that the 'transition' can happen before the change. I am recommending it to my fellow "boomer" friends!

                          1 out of 5 stars Terribly Disappointing.......2007-09-14

This is one of the worst books i have ever read. The same quotes from the Sandman series are used over and over again and the author's personal experiences cloud any real information. "Intelligent" and "scholarly" are the last words I would use to describe this book; it reads like a high school student's analysis. I was excited to see a book-length examination of both the Sandman series and the ideas of Joseph Campbell, both of which I am extremely interested in, but this was disappointing beyond words.

4 out of 5 stars Neil Gainman's The Sandman and Joseph Campbell: In Search of the MOdern Myth.......2007-01-18

If you are looking for another story told by Neil Gaiman - This is NOT it - this is a very well written book by stephen Rauch about the philisopical and contexual aspects of myth. The book just happens to use the Sandman sieres as its primary backdrop for its discussion. All and all a very interesting book to which i would recommend, and one not be an avid fan or very knowledgable about The Sandman sieres to enjoy. Just make sure to consider it a book primarily about myth and philosophy as opposed to a book about the Sandman sieres.
