I didn't find this book as helpful as I hoped to. I found the information very general. I did value the suggestions regarding putting together a first aid kit for dogs as well as the information on dog foot pad care.

If you want a great book on getting started with backpacking with dogs, look no further. Charlene has written the definitive guide to packing with dogs. Don't listen to the naysayers! This is it when it comes to choosing a pack, planning a hike, and camping with dogs. I highly recommend this book -- it's the first and the best out there.

Not enough butter for the bread.......2003-03-14

This book has the basics just fine. But nothing on the more experienced side. If your trails require fording you find no help here. Tent training, protecting tent floor & inflatable sleeping mattress from dog's nails etc stuff are missing.

The best part of the book was dog's health checkup, signs of dehydration, paw hardening recipe etc.

Conclusion: If your hike lasts a day, the book is fine. If it lasts a week in the wilderness, your dogs will be in trouble unless you find some more information.

Exhaustive Reference on Orchids.......2003-12-04

A wonderful book printed over 30 years ago in 1965 is a favorite umong orchidphiles. Not even today's modern references with updated names compares to Hawkes tomb on orchids. Hawkes modern day work can be said to be comparable to the 1894 7th Ed. of B.S. Williams "The Orchid Growers Manual", which is even today a useful reference. While Hawkes Encyclopeadia of Cultivated Orchids is long out of print used copies are readily available and worth the cost.

Trolling Through the Orchid Species Wilderness.......2000-05-02

There are comparatively few books which could be said to provide a bench mark source for information across the range of New and Old World orchid species. Although A. D. Hawkes book was published in 1965, it remains one of the best references available to orchid collectors.

Although the entries for each species are brief, they do provide all essential information, including plant and flower descriptions, regional distribution, habitat requirements and synonyms.

There are photographs and line drawings of only a few of the species described in the text, but space limitations probably required such a decision if the work was to be contained in a single volume. There is of course Hawkes' companion volume of illustrated orchid species to supplement this encyclopaedia.

While events have overtaken some of the entries, due to taxonomical revisions or mere name changes, this book remains one of the best single volume sources of information on orchid species available to collectors.

I am surprised that it has not been revised, updated and re-issued, as there is nothing as comprehensive in this area currently available.

Good supplement to the Attacking Anxiety program .......2007-08-22

This review is in response to some criticism I have read about Lucinda Bassett and the book FROM PANIC TO POWER. There have been some comments on this page alleging that Lucinda Bassett is only in it for the money and that this book, and the Attacking Anxiety program, do not really offer any help to those dealing with anxiety and depression. As someone who went through the Attacking Anxiety program back in 1994 at age 18 and who is currently reviewing the program, as someone who has read the FROM PANIC TO POWER book (and who received a free autographed copy of LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS from Lucinda Bassett in gratitude for some online mentoring I had offered to others dealing with anxiety and depression), I feel qualified to address the issues of the effectiveness of Lucinda's work. Bottom line: it works. Or, rather, it helps a great deal. But one caveat -- detailed below.

Session 4 of the Attacking Anxiety program says that people who deal with anxiety often have unrealistic expectations. Our high expectations of ourselves, our friends, our lives, often cause an undo amount of anxiety and stress. We can lessen our anxiety by lessening our expectations. "Don't expect so much," Lucinda suggests. Lowering your expectations will make you more thankful for and aware of whatever little progress you make in your journey to recovery. The Attacking Anxiety program is advertised as offering you "complete recovery" from issues concerning anxiety and depression. In the version of the program that I have, it is not until session 15 (the last session) that Lucinda admits, "The truth of the matter is that it simply takes 15 weeks to go through the material in the program. There is no limit to the amount of time it takes you to get over anxiety." Eventually, she admits, "We don't know everything."

The great irony is that you sort of need to use Lucinda's advise against her own advertising slogans. I could paraphrase Lucinda's advise as, "Don't expect the Attacking Anxiety program or the book FROM PANIC TO POWER to live up to its inflated advertisement claims." If you go through the program expecting complete recovery from anxiety (with no relapses or "growth spurts"), if you read FROM PANIC TO POWER expecting a complete recovery, you will come away disappointed. The truth as I feel it now is that if you use the Attacking Anxiety program and FROM PANIC TO POWER as tools in what may be a lifelong recovery strategy and lifestyle, you will definitely see positive results. The advise I'd give to a seeker of recovery is that if you have the means you should get your hands on a copy of the Attacking Anxiety program. It is without a doubt the masterpiece of Lucinda Bassett's oeuvre. The book FROM PANIC TO POWER is in my opinion a mere supplement to the program.

I'll close with a note for the male reader and listener. Going through the Attacking Anxiety program and rereading FROM PANIC TO POWER, I can't help but notice that this is hands-down intended for a female audience. (I first became aware of Lucinda Bassett because of her appearance on Oprah, for example.) This is not to say that what Lucinda teaches won't help males. The material has helped me a great deal as the bare tools of recovery are without gender. But Lucinda Bassett herself mentions that statistically speaking far more women than men deal with anxiety and depression, and Lucinda and apparently most of her staff are female. It therefore is not surprising that much of the material is fashioned toward a female audience. Specifically, many of the stories in FROM PANIC TO POWER deal with issues that women more often than men will face (balancing the life of motherhood and career, etc.). And even in the Attacking Anxiety program, particularly in the group discussions that always take place after Lucinda's introductory monologues, a female perspective abounds. (On Lucinda's audio program Life Without Limits, a good portion of one of the tapes has Lucinda giving a pep talk about how sexy lingerie makes you feel better about yourself. You go, girl!) And sometimes the group discussion portions of the Attacking Anxiety program remind me of episodes of The View (which Lucinda has actually appeared on), and sometimes passages of FROM PANIC TO POWER read like excerpts from Better Homes and Gardens. I wish Lucinda would let a male member of her staff create at least a single-volume program about the issues facing men who are dealing with these issues.

So, to recap, FROM PANIC TO POWER is a good book overall. But it is not the end-all be-all of recovery from anxiety and/or depression. In my opinion it is but a supplement to the Attacking Anxiety program, and some of the stories will most likely be uninteresting to the male reader.

I think this book is very good for someone who have had a mild to moderate anxiety in their life like I am. Lucinda was absolutely right about the process of overcoming the anxiety and fear: recognize your anxiety, find a coping technique, and re-expose to the situation that creates that anxiety. I personally think that people who are still suffering from their anxieties are the ones who have not found their suitable coping techniques yet. This book gives you guidelines and ideas to overcoming the anxieties including changing your ways of thinking if they're starting to hurt you. After I finished reading it, I did gain a perspective on my dream and my way of thinking, which I was thankful for the writer.

However, there is one flaw in the book. I don't think this book stresses well enough on coping techniques if you experience anxiety in a particular situation. She told you some ideas, but never really shows you how. Just like another reviewer, I think she's keeping all the good stuff for her program, which is really expensive :)

Where do I begin with a Thriller of a Book where the Book is Great from First Page to the Last Page!! You will feel the Passion of the Author/Founder and stories of Indivduals who have walked in her Shoes!!!

The Author still has to practice positive coping techniques every day. She recommends this to her patients as well. What sets this book apart from other Authors subjects relating to Anxiety Disorder books on the market is ????

Lucinda was there and is doing well right now and as she explained "Some Anxiety is a Good Thing!!!" Most people are Misinformed including myself until reading this Book.

The Author and Founder of Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety explains different types of Anxiety Disorders ranging from very mild to extreme cases. Anxiety is the projecting of "wasted time equals wasted energy" Replacing this Time and Energy with Positive Thoughts over any situation. i.e. Talking in front of others in a Meeting/Presentation?? Another example is "should I take a Walk right now or wait until nobody is around, since my appearance might be questioned??

The Author responds to examples like these and many others throughout the Book and Advantages/Disadvantages for doing different things. There is also a Food Section describing the different types of foods to eat before sleep, or activities/events in general terms. "To Medicate or to not Medicate Section-That is the Question?" Some Doctors are too quick to Prescribe instead of using Foods/Diets/Exercise Plans alone and nothing else or with these plans resulting with reduced Medications.

The Book has a nice flow to its writting and the Author makes you feel like she is talking to you in the same room.

I believe everyone can get some benefit from this book.
I have Learned alot not to dwell, use time limits, and Positive Attitude Replacement benefiting from practicing the Techniques resulting with Great Success!!

Lucinda, Thank You for this Wonderful Book and I cannot wait to begin reading your Second book on "Life without Limits". The Author also has Audio Tapes on these books and Audios on the Techniques.

My Anxiety of Writting this Review is Conquered!!

This is a cognitive-behavioral approach. I think it can help people to examine their negative thinking and learn that their ingrained responses may be partly responsible for their symptoms. But if someone is suffering from really crippling anxiety they should know that drugs are available that will remove the worst of it (sometimes at the cost of their sex lives). But I doubt that drugs or behavior mod provides an enduring solution. Partly due to cost constraints and partly due to the belief that psychology is a form of engineering, many contemporary practitioners are reluctant to admit that life is scary and emotional problems are often too complex for textbook solutions. Only now, after a hundred years, has psychology proudly announced the "finding" that loving family relationships are good for your mental health. Duh!!!! Having people you love and trust is certainly therapeutic, as is talking about things with a therapist who is willing to go into some depth. I also think religious faith can be helpful to people who feel they are worthless for one reason or another. People with a fear of public speaking should consider Toastmasters or a similar organization, since public speaking is a really important skill.

Suffered for 30 years.......2007-04-24

If you have suffered for as long as I, you know that the threat of having anxiety/panic attacks is a real pain. This book opened my eyes to the common feelings of others suffering the same trials. I would recommend combining it with other books---by no means is it all-inclusive, but trust me: it's a great start. (I might recommend The Anxiety Cure by DuPont, et al, and Don't Panic by Ried Wilson. There are numerous choices available to help you find strategies)

I've had 30 YEARS of intermittent anxiety attacks, with the past year having been riddled with attacks. I have always been terrified of medicine, and sought cognitive therapy...but still felt as if I must be the only person alive with the particular thoughts and feelings I've had. As soon, as I read this book, I began to feel much more at ease. I felt okay about myself and my ability to overcome-and I am doing very well. If you think you're going over the edge and that you will never feel better, please read this book. We are not alone-and we don't have to be afraid of having another attack!

Well-written book; must-read for any broadcasting student.......2004-01-26

Arthur Singer's account of the life of Arthur Godfrey is truly a readable book. More importantly, the Singer book is one of the few fair and balanced looks at Godfrey's lengthy, yet ultimately forgotten career.
I can't say enough for Singer's style of writing. There's one passage in particular where he describes what it's like being in a radio studio, down to the smell of the equipment. As a broadcaster for nearly 20 years, he hit it on the head.
Also, Singer does a very good job of chronicling Godfrey's career through its ups and downs, but also, more importantly, through the transitional phases radio and television would make, in which Godfrey would wind up back again as primarily a radio personality in the 60s and early 70s, only to have him struggle to adapt into the later 70s and early 80s.
Even if you've never heard of Arthur Godfrey, if you're a student of broadcasting, this will be an important book to learn about the experiences of one of the world's first multi-media superstars. Long before Howard Stern, Arthur Godfrey was the king of all media.

It's About Time!.......2000-02-16

This book has most of the important facts about Godfrey's unique career. What a fascinating, if sometimes difficult, man. We who remember his shows, or who knew him (like myself, at age 18-19), have been waiting for years for this book. Mr. Singer could have dwelled on the scandals and tantrums and what not, but he chose to describe the broadcasting era and the man intelligently and fairly. Perhaps he could have expanded a little on some of the good things Godfrey did for many. It would have been nice to read the eventual fates of the various Little Godfreys. But Singer cleared up the false and terrible "antisemitisim" charges with common sense. No doubt Mr. Singer has enough good stuff left over for another volume on this important radio/TV/aviation pioneer!

Arthur Godfrey-The Adventures of an American Broadcaster.......2000-01-15

Arthur J. Singer has given us an interesting and complete biography of Arthur Godfrey,deftly weaving the history of broadcasting (both dradio and TV) with the life of Mr. Godfrey including his passions (flying, horses and at times, women), his need to control, his sincere patriotism and his slow demise. His charismatic personality enabled him to have a profound influence on his audiences. This book is highly readable, Mr. Godfrey is always interesting and the times are vividly recreated. I felt that I had a complete picture of the man, his successes and failures, but most of all, his monumental influence on the way the broadcasting industry evolved.

Outstanding.......2007-07-29

I once heard that Lenin was a great admirer of Connolly, and having just finished Guerrilla Days In Ireland by Tom Barry I though it would be a good idea to learn a little more about the origins of the IRA by reading Connolly so I purchased this book. What I found was a writer far more accessible that the likes or Marx or Lenin who at times can be a little difficult to read for the layman. Connolly speaks the simple unadulterated truth and I have to agree with my fellow reviewer, Connolly has definitely removed a cloud of confusion in my mind on the conflict in Ireland.

On a personal note I am a former member of the Industrial Workers of the World, Connolly was also a member of the union and like any socialist worth his salt he was a union organizer, Connolly reiterated in my mind the importance of putting economic action before political action. Like any good student of Connolly I feel I must quote him...

"The enrollment of the workers in unions patterned closely after the structure of modern industries, and following the organic lines of industrial development, is par excellence, the swiftest, safest and most peaceful form of constructive work the socialist can engage in. It prepares within the framework of capitalist society the working forms of the Socialist Republic, and thus, while increasing the resisting power of the worker against present encroachments of the capitalist class, it familiarizes him with the idea that the union he is helping to build up is destined to supplant that class in the control of the industry in which he is employed.
The power of this idea to transform the dry detail work of trade union organization into the constructive work of revolutionary socialism and thus to make the unimaginative trade unionist a potent factor in the launching of a new system of society cannot be overestimated." (Socialism made easy)

This is one of those books where as I'm reading it I found myself tearing up little strips of paper book marking numerous pages to be reread and quoted, I find it easy now to understand why he is so influential.

A must for any student of modern Irish History........1998-08-03

I borrowed this book from a friend and had to obtain a copy for my own personal library.

The introduction is so moving that anyone interested in modern Irish History will not put it down.

A Great book by a former labor organizer & revolutionary.......1999-12-19

Not too many in America recognize the name of James Connolly, but before the 1916 Uprising in Dublin he was a labor organizer here in America with the IWW. This book is a collection of writings that provide some insight into the political thought of the day. You must begin this journey with the understanding that the use of the language is a little different from now.

Progressivism, James Connolly shows us, was a language and style of political action available to a wide range of individuals and groups. A diverse array of political and civic figures used it to present themselves as leaders of a communal response to the growing power of illicit interests and to the problems of urban-industrial life. As structural reforms weakened a ward-based party system that helped mute ethnic conflict, this new formula for political mobilization grew more powerful. Its most effective variation in Boston was an "ethnic progressivism" that depicted the city's public life as a clash between its immigrant majority--"the people"--and a wealthy Brahmin elite--"the interests." As this portrayal took hold, Bostonians came to view their city as a community permanently beset by ethnic strife.

In showing that the several reform visions that arose in Boston included not only the progressivism of the city's business leaders but also a series of ethnic progressivisms, Connolly offers a new approach to urban public life in the early twentieth century. He rejects the assumption that ethnic politics was machine politics and employs both institutional and rhetorical analysis to reconstruct the inner workings of neighborhood public life and the social narratives that bound the city together. The result is a deeply textured picture that differs sharply from the traditional view of machine-reform conflict.

"The Triumph of Ethnic Progressivism" is an excellent reappraisal of urban politics in the early part of the 20th century. Connolly provides an exhaustive analysis of voting patterns - sometimes on a block by block basis - throughout the city of Boston. Connolly's approach (as well as research) dramatically moves forward our knowledge of precinct behavior, as well as ethnic association with particular issues. What's best about Connolly's book is that he relies less on inference and assumption that many authors who tackle this material do. Connolly's argument is predicated upon empirical evidence, and that alone is a refreshing break from much modern political history. For a better understanding of the period before Connolly's book picks up, one should read both Stephan Thernstrom's "The Other Bostonians" and Oscar Handlin's "Boston's Immigrants." Gerard Gamm's "The Making of New Deal Democrats: Voter Realignment in Boston, 1920-1940" is an fine continuation after the period with which Connolly is concerned.
