    5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide!!.......2005-08-19

We were considering a trip through Yellowstone and Idaho when our family gave this book to us. We are definitely going to both and can hardly wait!

The book is written very well. The author manages to illustrate Idaho's rich history and must-see stops in such a way that it does not read like a typical, dull atlas or encyclopedia. The Ultimate Idaho Atlas and Travel Encyclopedia is enjoyable to read and easy to navigate. We highly recommend this book!

    5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information!.......2005-08-18

I recently returned from a motorcycle trip that included Idaho and wish I would have had this awesome book before I left. It would have been a wonderful guide for touring this beautiful state. Speaking of beautiful, the word also describes much of the photography in this book. No matter where your interests lie, The Ultimate Idaho Atlas and Travel Encyclopedia can help you locate it.

While many travel books read like an encyclopedia, this one does not. The style used by the author in this book has a way of grabbing and keeping your interest. Her sense of humor becomes apparent in many of the sidebar articles that provide a perspective of Idaho's landscape and people from the past and present.

If Idaho was for sale, this book could get it sold!

    Book Description

The story of a mother who loses her children to their father in Germany, when he refuses to return them and the German courts support him even though his actions were in defiance of British and German courts and the custody agreement. This is the story of one mother's fight for her sons' right to the love and care of both of their parents.

"Child abduction is a subject in which I have always been interested as a lawyer. To lose one's children must be torture for any parent. Even worse, imagine it from the child's point of view: snatched from the security of a familiar environment, often at an age when the breakdown of the family relationships is hard to understand. Catherine Meyer's story, so vividly told in her book, is one of the most moving and disturbing that I have read, Cherie Booth, wife of Tony Blair, British Prime Minister."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Loving the children, all of us.......1999-12-22

Catherine Meyer's book really hit home. There were tears as I read every page. The tragedy of Mrs. Meyer's children and her relationship is becoming more and more evident in our society. All parents and childcare workers should read this book. I too, live in this terrible situation with Mrs. Meyer and can feel her pain. It has been four years and we see little or no results. Prayer has been the only answer to this. My heart goes out to all children, mothers, fathers, and

grandparents who are alienated from each other. Blessings to all of you.

    5 out of 5 stars unbelievably unjust.......1999-06-25

If this horrible thing can happen to Catherine Meyer with little hope for resolution, think of how many others out there who are not as visible but are experiencing the same nightmare. The whole thing is tragic and wrong!

5 out of 5 stars A must read. Children and parents need to be protected........1999-06-21

As soon as I finished reading this book, I knew that I had to include it as part of my library for reference. I found some familiar phrases, thoughts and ideas within the covers. I am also a left behind parent. My daughter was unlawfully abducted from the United States to Austria in 1995. I think it is important to communicate the harsh reality of International Parental Child Abuction and the responses of various countries involved in this matter. I thought that the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction was explained clearly in the book. It is most noteworthy to be made aware that there are countries which demonstrate a pattern of non-compliance to its obligations of the Hague Convention. I applaud Catherine Meyer and the publisher for bringing awareness to this tragic problem that affects thousands of children and parents worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars A real page turner. Every parent should read this........1999-05-08

This is a heartrending and moving account of a mother's worst nightmare. To look to the law for justice and to have the system turn against you must be the most horrendous experience of all. Everyone should read this brilliant account in order to realize how unprotected one is as a parent and worse still, how unprotected children are today. This is an eye-opener. Who would ever suspect that in our democratic society that such a travesty of justice can still happen and affect so many families. When I started reading this book, I simply could not put it down.

      Book Description

Drawing on his experience in creating fictional bad guys, crime novelist Lawrence Block surveys the underside of American history through fifty of its most infamous characters. Some, like Jesse James, Bonnie Parker, and Joe Colombo, led a life of crime; others, like John Wilkes Booth and John White Webster, committed one notorious act. Some, like Pretty Boy Floyd or the elusive thief Railroad Bill, have become folk heroes, whether or not the real details of their lives matched the myths they inspired. Others, like Ed Gein and Ted Bundy, will be forever reviled. Block introduces each biography with a writer's eye for character and a good story. He begins the book with a short essay that considers how Americans have defined and regarded villains through history. The biographies, culled from the pages of the American National Biography and illustrated with archival photographs, describe each villain's background, exploits, and eventual fate--often with unexpected details. The convicted killer Nathan Leopold, for example, became the administrator of a leprosy hospital after his parole. The gangster Dutch Schultz was known not only for his bootlegging expertise but also for his cheap, ill-fitting clothes. The stagecoach bandit Black Bart fancied himself a poet (or, as he put it, "PO8"). And when outlaw Bill Doolin finally met his end, only a rusting buggy axle marked his grave. Ideal for readers of true crime, crime fiction, and history, Gangsters, Swindlers, Killers, and Thieves brings a fresh perspective to American's fascination with crime and its perpetrators.

It is easy to look up how to do something when I'm knitting and need a bit of help. I think it is a well-laid out book and is an invaluable resource for any knitter. This is an essential tool for the knitting bag!

This is a small but THICK book containing everything you need to know about knitting. It's the book I go to when I need to find out how to do something I don't understand in knitting. The one on crochet is just as good.

        5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-07-30

I bought this book because I am new to knitting and it really is everything I had hoped it would be! First off, the size is great - perfect for carrying around in your knitting bag 24/7. It has answered all of my questions so far and helped me when I've gotten stuck on a project. Also, much to my surprise, the instructions are often better than my "full size" knitting books. This book is great for anyone who is a novice knitter and would probably even be a valuable resource for someone who is more experienced.

This is an excellent tool for all parents, not only for those who have indiscipline problems at home. This material represents a strategic plan to develop correctly family relations. All parents, single moms/dads and tutors most have this book as a bible near to their bed. The content is more than just advices; it is a real and complete guide for the parents from all the world and nationalities.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Advise.......2007-06-27

Enjoyed reading this book. Lots of helpful hints and gives parents a new perspective on how unique every child is.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not great.......2007-06-12

If you watch the show on even a semi-regular basis then you probably don't need to buy this book. If not, then Nanny 911 is pretty good. Some of the advice seems to fall into the "intuitively obvious" category to me but, then again, there are some pretty stupid people out there replicating themselves...

Overall, it's a decent 101 lesson on communication and relating to children without spoiling them or invalidating their feelings. Basically, their wisdom boils down to respect and consistency. Again, fairly obvious stuff. Even so, I found several useful tips that I will defiantly keep in mind and apply.

              Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Nanny 911: Expert Advice for All Your Parenting Emergencies.......2007-06-08

This book is truly informative and should be read by everyone who has children, is associated with children or is thinking of having children. A lot of the advise is real and basic but unless you get it from the horse's mouth, you don't think about it - Common Sense. It's about teaching YOU how to work with children - train the trainer. I don't have children myself but have have nieces and nephews, and friends with little ones. After reading this I find that I'm able to help them out with issues they may be having with their kids. I've given this book to my brother-in-law who is a single dad, and I've also given it to two young couples who are expecting. A Must Read!

5 out of 5 stars A great parenting tool, and also great for Grandparents!.......2007-03-26

This is one of the best guides to parenting I have ever read, and I am a trained parenting teacher. What I like about this book is it is very tried and true information, practical suggestions, very quick and easy to read and laid out in a way that is easy to reference. The underlying beliefs are based in a firm understanding of what children need to feel happy and behave well, and they never lose sight of the need for a family to share time and love, and for each member to be self-disciplined. This book is primarily practical, NOT theoretical, and the practical approach makes it a very easy book to share. Parenting approaches can be very divisive, both between parents, grandparents, and other caregivers. This books gives simple, practical solutions that are easy for all family members to agree on and try, that are grounded in respect for every family member.

              Book Description

The painter Balthus, whose tenacity and cultivated taste for secrecy have enveloped him in an aura of forbidding mystery, wrote this memoir at the end of his long life.A man who for decades opted to "give expression to the world" rather than to "express" himself speaks for the first and only time about his life, family, work, his theory of art and how it intersects with history, literature, and spirituality.

Balthus was born Balthasar Klossowski in 1908 to Polish art historian Erich Klossowski and his wife, the painter Elisabeth Dorothea Spiro. The family lived in Germany, France, and Switzerland. In this memoir Balthus describes his childhood with his mother and her lover -- the poet Rainer Maria Rilke -- who became Balthus's own spiritual mentor. He evokes la vie de boheme in Paris during the 1920s, his friendships with Picasso, Derain, Artaud, Giacometti, Saint-Exupéry, René Char, Pierre Jean Jouve, and Albert Camus. He discusses his paintings, offers glimpses into his marriage, and expresses his passion for Chinese art and the Swiss chalets and Italian villas that he helped to restore. He recalls touching moments with his beloved daughter Harumi and the inspiration he drew from his cats. Also, in a kind of final lesson, Balthus shares his thoughts about painting and creation, denounces contemporary art as being illusory and deceitful, and talks candidly about his Catholic faith and how it inspired his work.

"We are most charmed by the memoir's ease of expression, as if Balthus were confiding in us, as individuals," writes Joyce Carol Oates in her introduction to Vanished Splendors. "We are brought into a startling intimacy with genius."

5 out of 5 stars A must read for thinkers of art.......2005-03-02

This Blathus memoir is absolutely beautiful. You feel as if Balthus is sitting right beside you sharing his most personal reflections. He shares not only about his approach to painting but also about many areas he considers to be blessings and difficulties for his life. An intimate and inspiring read. For any young artist or book collector of art this is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars The great Balthus in his own words.......2004-01-29

When it comes to twentieth century painters, Balthus is one of the most important and certainly one that stands out from the rest. He is enigmatic and people often misunderstand his paintings. Vanished Splendors is Balthus' memoirs that he was working on at the time of his death. In it he puts forth his philosophy on many subjects such as art, modern art, life, religion, family, love and history. He's known or met most of the important artisians of the last century. Picasso, Camus, Artaud, Monet and more. This is a quick read and gives insight into his world and how he painted (he often took years to finish one canvas). Very enjoyable and informative.

              Book Description

The scene outside Waco, Texas, on February 28, 1993 - when dozens of federal law enforcement agents in full combat gear stormed the Branch Davidian compound - could have been cast in England before the Quakers and Pilgrims fled to America, or in the colonies at Salem, or in the new Republic during the nineteenth century, when descendants of the Quakers and Pilgrims turned their suspicions on the early Mormons. The elements that these very American crusades had in common were, on one hand, a group of people with beliefs incomprehensible to the majority of the population, and on the other, police agencies whose operatives could not distinguish custom from law, idiosyncrasy from threat. The line between churches, which Americans believe should be protected from government interference, and cults, which most Americans hold in disdain, has nothing to do with the Constitution-the First Amendment in theory shields both-and everything to do with the prejudices of a nation that has grown fearful of the diversity that made it unique. The residents of Mt. Carmel were instantly convicted of sin and lawbreaking by the kind of gossip that unites remote hamlets and electronic villages alike.

This is the story the daily press didn't give us, the definitive book about what happened at Mt. Carmel, near Waco, Texas, examined from both sides-the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the FBI on one hand, and David Koresh and his followers on the other. Dick J. Reavis points out that the government had little reason to investigate Koresh and even less to raid the compound at Mt. Carmel. The government lied to the public about most of what happened - about who fired the first shots, about drug allegations, about child abuse. The FBI was duplicitous and negligent in gassing Mt. Cannel - and that alone could have started the fire that killed seventy-six people.

The press only made things worse. The feds said that Koresh and his cult held dangerous beliefs as well as dangerous guns, and the press passed on the charge without criticism or independent judgment. Its stories set up a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy in which the accusation - heresy - both predicted and justified the sect's demise, as if every Jeremiah were a Jim Jones, every Mt. Carmel inevitably a Jonestown.

Drawing on interviews with survivors of Koresh's movement (which dates back to 1935, long before Koresh was born), on published accounts, on trial transcripts, on esoteric religious tracts and audiotapes that tell us who Koresh was and why people followed him, and most of all on secret documents that the government has not released to the public yet, Reavis has uncovered the real story from beginning to end, including the trial that followed. It is a story about the very American, nineteenth-century roots of Koresh's theology, and it includes previously unpublished biographical details. Reavis quotes from Koresh himself at great length to create an extraordinary portrait of a movement, an assault, and an avoidable tragedy.

3 out of 5 stars You think you know, but you have no idea.......2004-12-03

Before reading this book, I was only aware of the vague details of the Waco incident. I knew who, I knew when, I knew where, and I had a synopsis of what happened. I found the entire happening rather disturbing and creepy. Yet, upon seeing this book I thought to myself, this might be interesting, and it truly was. The Ashes of Waco: An Investigation opened up the entire event to a new level. I feel it was a good book for me to start with. It was fairly short, only about 300 pages, and it was easy writing. Therefore, it was easy for me to follow and I now know at least more than the basics.
Throughout the book it was revealed that the other was moderately biased against the government, but I found the bias to be rather enlightening. It was good to read the other side of the story as opposed to just hearing what the government had to say about the entire situation. This book addressed many debatable issues involving Waco, and I thought it was an enjoyable read. This is the kind of book for beginners on this subject, like me, who are interested in finding out what people besides the government have to say.

1 out of 5 stars Koresh Had Enough Illegal Weapons For Kosovo's Next Revolution!!!.......2004-07-28

It is always amusing for me to come across yet another attempt at 'Rewriting Koresh History'. The author conveniently overlooks THE FACT that David Koresh used women and innocent children as 'Human Shields' from the proper authorities. He also neglects to mention that keeping children locked up for 51 days without any decent food, running water , heat or electricity was CHILD ABUSE on a Grand Scale.I also thought his profile of Marc Breault was most misleading when Mr. Beault accomplished more in saving Koresh's followers than anybody else involved in this scenario. I do believe that this book should be sold in the 'Fiction 'section of any bookstore.

5 out of 5 stars The Ashes of Waco............2003-12-14

Out of all the books I've read on the Waco Incident(and I've read quite a few), The Ashes of Waco has to be the most informative, in-depth book on the subject. I think, mostly being, because Dick Reavis stuck with the story long after all the others gave up on it after the fire occurred. He also gives an honest look at both sides of the coin and that's what makes good journalism. That, in turn, makes a great book.
The Ashes of Waco is a compelling read that you'll definitely get into and finish til the end.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the Waco tragedy..........2003-04-30

This book tells the story of the Waco tragedy in an easy to read manner. While it is my belief that the author intended to prevent a completly even-handed portrait of the event, it seems evident that he leans more to the side of the Davidians who were inside the compound. Regardless, both sides of the story are presented, and the reader comes away from the book with a greater insight into what occurred and why. Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars great book, good research & fairly interesting reading........2002-11-05

This book was one of several that I have read on the topic of the attack on the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas. The author does a good job of telling the story and pointing out the discrepancies between what the Goverment says VS what really happened. My only complaint were the several detours into Davidian beliefs and views of their impending deaths at the hands of the Government. While all of this surely played a crucial role, the book devotes too many pages to religious beliefs instead of more detailed information about the actual assault and murders committed by the US Government.

                                Book Description

This is a collection of eleven plays, written and devised by second and third year pupils using the Cambridge Latin Course. The language and background draw on Unit 1 of the Cambridge Latin Course, although students of other texts will be able to read and enjoy the collection. Unusual vocabulary is explained and there is also a consolidated vocabulary that includes macrons for pronunciation guidance. The casts of the eleven plays call for four to twenty-three characters with speaking parts of various lengths. The book also presents a vivid picture of Pompei's fiery end, referring not only to Pliny's ancient reports, but also to newspaper and artistic reports from more recent eruptions. This collection of playlets makes a stimulating supplement to beginners' courses, including, but certainly not limited to the Cambridge Latin Course. Pupils' amusement and involvement will help the teacher who finds the use of oral Latin increasingly helpful.
