Book Description
It's easy to pick the mob moll out of a crowd: she's brazenly platinum, sports a 10-carat diamond, and doesn't have a clue what her husband does for a living. Or so pop culture would have us believe. The truth is infinitely more complex. In this eye-opening expos of the women at the deadly heart of the Mafia, reporter Claire Longrigg uncovers a fascinating subculture of American females-and their strategies for survival. Some are irresistibly attracted to dangerous men-like Lana Zancocchio, daughter of the Bonanno family consigliere, who calls her terrifying father 'a real man,' and Gladys Berman, who is too psychologically brutalized to leave her casino mafioso husband. Others, like Camille Varacalli, take part in criminal activities alongside their men by helping to conceal their husbands' income, directing drug rings, and even running guns. Longrigg persuaded these women to break the omer ta , the code of silence, with astonishing results. Based on in-depth interviews with the mothers, daughters, wives, sisters, and girlfriends of notorious mobsters, No Questions Asked offers an unprecedented glimpse into a fiercely private and frightening world.

Interesting.......2007-01-04
I purchased this book for myself because I am fascinated by organized crime. This was a fairly interesting account of the woman's role in "modern" US mafia. I wish the information was more in-depth, but it was an enjoyable read none the less.
This book sucked hard.......2006-06-17
If you read this book -- you can thank the author for making you dumber.
If you spent money on this book -- you can thank the author for wasting your hard-earned cash.
If you enjoyed this book in any respect -- then you can thank the author for her talent in writing fiction.
Not only was this book chock full of crap, it didn't at all confer with the people involved to get the facts straight. This is all hearsay and press coverage that anyone could dig up googling the subject matter.
Now, if you believe what the press tells you -- then you're a real sucker.
NO QUESTIONS ASKED OF ME .......2006-05-15
The most accurate aspect of the book, insofar as it pertains to me, is the title, since Clare certainly did not ask any questions of me. From my perspective, it is little more than a smear-campaign and attempt to cash in on a popular topic.
VERY INTERESTING CLARE........2006-01-08
THE BOOK WAS GENERALLY GOOD, HOWEVER SOME OF THE FACTS ARE OFF. sHE SHOULD HAVE INTERVIEWED THE WOMEN BEFORE WRITING ABOUT THEM.
This was pretty entertaining. .......2005-02-05
I like books on the mafia. This was pretty good. Its a collection of many stories from mob wives or daughters. Most with bad endings. This was easy to read but the women in the stories are mostly all nuts like the one who married her first husbands killer. I really dont think men would like it though.

Nancy Bailey Has Done It Again!.......2005-02-09
Return to Manitou is an inspiring journal of triumph over injury, personal loss and unexpected changes. Nancy writes with total candor while maintaining her characteristic sense of humor and ability to share so realisically that she brings the reader right there with her. Her two Morgan horses are pivotal in her healing, as well as providing many new and ingenious "learning experiences" that that make this book a delightful, entertaining, thought-provoking read.
Highly recommended for all Clifford fans, present and future!

Book Description
This handsomely illustrated book presents more than seventy paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures by Edgar Degas (1834–1917) in Harvard University’s collections—one of the most important holdings of the artist’s work in the United States. In 1911, the Fogg Art Museum was the first museum to mount a one-man exhibition on Degas and was the only museum to do so during the artist’s lifetime. This book examines the history of Degas’s reception in the U.S., and in particular the pivotal role that Harvard played.
Marjorie Benedict Cohn offers a historical account of the formation of the prized collection of Degas’s works at the Fogg. Jean Sutherland Boggs provides an engaging personal recollection of her initial encounter in 1944 with Degas and his champion at the Fogg, associate director Paul J. Sachs, who inspired not only Boggs’s later work on Degas but also that of many other art historians, museum directors, and curators.

When Edgar Degas died in 1917, his heirs found crate after crate gathering dust in the rented rooms inhabited by the isolated old artist. The opened containers revealed one of the greatest personal art collections of all time: There were paintings, drawings, and prints by El Greco, Ingres, Delacroix, Daumier, Cassatt, Manet, van Gogh, Cézanne, and Degas himself, including the famous Bellelli Family, a work from his youth that Degas could never bear to part with. When his heirs auctioned off the collection in 1918, governments granted national museums special funds to make purchases, even though it was the height of World War I and money was tight. The museums, it turned out, were also aided by the war--on the day of the sale, cannon fire sent most bidders running for cover. The ones who remained got bargain prices. This gorgeous book is filled with color plates of many of the paintings, and its 14 thoughtful essays are invaluable to comprehending the tastes of a single artist, one with the eye and the wherewithal to put together such an amazing collection.

Customer Reviews:
I recommend this book in all my herb classes.......2002-11-13
For anyone new to herb gardening in USDA Zones 3-6, this book is a great start. Plant profiles for common culinary herbs, and a month-by-month guide to cultivation, make this a perfect reference for new 'herbies.' My only wish would be for some great photos of seedlings, mature plants, and harvesting, which would be especially helpful to folks who are new to herbs. Whenever anyone in one of my herb classes asks about a good book, this is the one that I recommend.
Excellent resource for cold region herb gardeners.......1998-11-11
I am new to herb gardening, and to the Midwest. This book has been an excellent resource. I've been herb gardening in Zone 3 for 3 years now.
The only drawback I can see is that I would like more specific information on each plant. But it has a lot of information about herbs that grow here, plus tips on gardening naturally. It also includes interesting factoids on herbs throughout history.
I highly recommend this to up and coming gardeners!
Book Description
A companion workbook to the enormously successful New York Times bestselling relationship book, Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples.
In 1988, Harville Hendrix in partnership with his wife, Helen LaKelly Hunt, published a terrifically successful relationship guide, Getting the Love You Want. The book introduced thousands to their Imago Relationship Therapy, a unique healing process for couples, prospective couples, and parents, and developed into an overnight sensation. For their part, Doctors Hendrix and Hunt managed to aid scores of couples in their plight for more loving, supportive, and deeply satisfying relationships. Now, more than a decade later, this companion book picks up where its predecessor left off, delving further into relationship therapy once again, to help transform relationships into lasting sources of love and companionship.
The Getting the Love You Want Workbook is designed for the hundreds of thousands of couples who have attended Imago workshops since Getting the Love You Want hit bookstands, as well as new and curious ones seeking a practical route back to intimacy and passionate friendship. The workbook contains a unique twelve-week course (The New Couples' Study Guide) designed to help work through the exercises published in Part III of Getting the Love You Want. Included are complete step-by-step instructions for transforming relationships into a lasting source of love and companionship.
For those of us struggling to maintain our most precious relationships, the Getting the Love You Want Workbook helps us grow aware of our individual, unconscious agenda while steering us towards a more harmonious link with our loved ones that will satisfy our deepest needs.
Customer Reviews:
a really usefull workbook.......2007-01-19
The philosophy of relationships that Dr. Haskill has developed is well researched and eye opening. The excersizes in the workbook are useful tools for willing couples to use to find a deeper understanding of themselves and better communication.
However, the workbook is not necessary if you buy the book "Getting the Love you want;" you can use your own notebook to do the sessions which comprise section 3 of the book, as well as the workbook.
I do highly recommend this item, for anyone who believes that the answer to trouble in a love relationship is not to abandon the loved one but to first resolve the issues that have surfaced. The author has really hit on something.
Fantastic Workbook for Couples.......2006-11-10
I have studied and practiced several models for couples counseling and this one by Hendrix is by far the best. Make sure to read the book as well.
excellent study guide for married couples.......2006-11-04
Harville Hendricks has provided a clear and easily followed outline for couples to follow as they work on their marriage. It teaches effective communication which is the foundation of a successful marriage. I heartily endorse this book.
Must have the book to go w/ this book........2006-10-04
I am only writing this to warn others you'll need the other book to be able to use this workbook. I don't have the other book so I have not been able to use any of the workbook.
Growth is potentially risky.......2005-02-19
This is, in part a response to the review by Abashed. As someone who has done both self-directed couple growth exercises and counselor directed exercises, I can say that the book probably needs to be used with a degree of caution. I certainly intend to buy and use a copy. BUT, I am aware that if, as we use the exercises, a potential problem starts to surface -- then it is time to seek a professional who is trained in Imago therapy.
For most couples, the exercises in this book are likely to be a source of growth and joy. But if you start to find something else please try to find assistance.
Any self-help book in the field of psychology has this potential pitfall. The growth process is seldom completely straight-forward.
Please note that I am not saying, "Don't buy this book." I believe that it may be a source of growth for many couples. I believe that Harville Hendrix has one of the best conceptual frameworks for relationship. What I am saying is that growth is risky, and that if you and your partner start to feel problems or less close, it may be time to seek professional assistance.
Good luck and good loving to all.
Book Description
Pornography, on or off the stage in an inflammatory issue, and one which is deeply linked to theatrical representation throughout history. But what happens to the notions of the pornographic when a female performer subverts the conventional models of pornographic representation by reclaiming the agency of her own body? Hardcore from the Heart presents a number of Annie Sprinkle's key performance texts and essays, and interviews with artists who have worked closely with her over the years, together with a critical introduction and commentaries.
Customer Reviews:
Not Just for Academics!.......2001-12-08
This book is a combination of pure Annie Sprinkle and the deconstruction of Sprinkle as provided by critical theorists. The academic sections can be heavy going if you're not used to that kind of writing, but this book is definitely worth getting, even if you end up skipping over the academic parts. The theory is like a frame around the artwork of Annie's life and like any good frame, takes up a small portion of the book, leaving the bulk of the pages for the actual art and information by and about Annie. Annie's art and life are just as vibrant and gorgeous whether you look at the frame or never notice it exists. The critique can help to set Annie's work into a larger context and it's worth reading, in my opinion, but if you love Annie Sprinkle but aren't into the post-modern scholarship thing, don't let that scare you away from "Hardcore from the Heart."
So what else is in this book? Well, there are great photos of Annie from important moments in her life, interviews with Annie and with others about Annie, a fantastic and respectful debate between Annie and an anti-porn feminist, biographical info about Annie and selections of Annie's work -- both scripts from her performances and work written by Annie. If you enjoy collecting and reading Annie Sprinkle's words, you need this book because it has things that don't appear in any other book by or about her. Overall, the book is a buffet of Annie Sprinkle, examining her from every imaginable angle, inside and out.
Edgy, fun and bravely funny.......2001-10-17
Annie Sprinkle has been delighting us at the intellectual and visceral levels for at least a decade with her cutting edge approach to sexual taboos. I love the humor and wisdom she brings to the world of sex, and the way she makes me thinkthinkthink about the IDEAS underlying my sex life. Great stuff from a brilliant sexual philosopher and an adventurous feminist. Brava!!
Book Description
The life and culture of Hapsburg Vienna before World War I--the city of Freud, Schoenberg, Klimt, and Wittgenstein, whose philosophy announced the birth of the modern era. An independent work...challenging, new, and useful. --New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
Kulturgeschichte of a remarkable cultural and intellectual watershed.......2006-04-15
This is a dazzlingly dense intellectual history of a time when there was an explosion of new ideas in both the arts and sciences. The place was Vienna, at the end of the Habsburg monarchy, where not only Sigmund Freud (psychlology) but also Loos (design), Schoenberg (music), Kochoscka (painting), and many others were establishing what we now call "modernism." It is also a philosophical tract of great depth, focusing on Wittgenstein. What is so remarkable is how commonplace their ideas and techniques have become in our everyday vocabulary - think "unconscious", but also "form follows function" - and how they all originated there, at the end of the 19C.
According to the authors, the starting point of the modernist movement is to be found in the deterioration of the Habsburg monarchy, spread as it was across a vast central european empire with dozens of languages and ethnic groups. To keep it all together in the face of rising nationalisms, the Habsburgs strove to maintain appearences of power and cohesion at all costs. This created a kind of living falsehood, in which issues were avoided by the use of code words and empty symbolic rituals.
Add to this the rise of new bourgeois fortunes, whereby a new middle classe arose based on industries. They too constructed their own private worlds within their homes, mimicing the Habsburgs and ignoring issues - in particular sexuality - to the point that it generated a latent hysteria in its women and anxiety in the working men, whose children despised them as fakes. Their houses were studded with overly ornate decorations, which were designed to ape the lifestyles of aristocrats, and they lived by elaborate codes of conduct and narrow career choices.
Obviously, this explains the biases in Freud's theories towards explaining too much by "suppressed impulses" buried in the unconscious (read hysterical women), but the authors argue that the great innovator of the age was Karl Krause, an independent satirist who called for honesty in language and the way one chose to live one's life. All of the others, they claim, were direct followers of Krause, from Klimt - he rebelled against the formalism of the royal academy of art with his Secessionist movement - to Wittgenstein and his study of language structure and meaning; even the great physicist Ernst Mach was apparently a follower of Krause, as was Canetti. They all knew eachother and were interested, and even participated, in eachothers' disciplines. This was a total surprise to me.
This is a fascinating intellectual tour (in the first 120 pages) that is evoked in dense prose that I had to read more than once to fully comprehend. I was particulary interested in their explanation of how Loos was attempting to strip away all ornament in an attempt to concentrate on the actual function of the buildings he designed as well as the household objects his followers created. This led directly to Bauhaus and all the other modernist schools of design, which exploited the new materials coming available, such as aluminum and tubular steel, to re-invent furniture, homes, and office spaces in ways that are still ripe for exploration today. I never understood the context in which this movement arose until I read this book.
The remaining 200 pages place Wittgenstein's philosphy in this context. To be honest, this interested me a lot less, but it is a must for students of modern philosophy. This is where the structure of language was explored, which led to the structuralists and to a degree the existentialists. It follows him to England, which comes in for heavy criticsm by the authors. In a way, this reads like a separate book.
Highly recommended. It is an intellectual adventure that is truly first rate.
An unforgettable book about an unforgettable time and place.......2005-08-28
As someone with a strong interest in modern philosophy as well as modern classical music, art and literature, I received more honest pleasure and enlightenment from reading this book than from any other book in recent memory. It is not per se a book about Wittgenstein, but rather an in-depth analysis of the milieu and mind-set of Vienna and its cultural elite circa 1900. Before immersing yourself into this delightful book, it might be a good idea to review the history of Austria-Hungary, how it came to be, the key events surrounding it, the emporer Franz Josef, and the territories which made up the dual monarchy. It also helps if you have some acquaintance with the German language, since German terms are used liberally throughout, often without denoting what those terms mean in English. Not being familiar with German, I found this mildly annoying, but certainly not enough to dampen my enthusiasm for this book.
Some of the most interesting sections of the book concern Viennese social philosophers and the artists whose works were a commentary on the corruption of the "gilded age": Otto Weininger, Kokoschka, Klimt, Schoenberg, Fritz Mauthner, and of course the unforgettable Karl Krauss. There is also a lengthy section on the scientific work of Mach and Hertz, the development of Hertz's "model" theory and its influence on Wittgenstein's Tractatus, as well as a beautifully written synopsis of Schopenhaur's philosophy.
And this is only the barest overview of a stupendously rich and rewarding book, one which all thoughtful people should and must read. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
THOUGHT AS AN HISTORICAL COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT.......2005-08-06
PHILOSOPHY...PHILO-SOPHIA...THE LOVE OF TRUTH IS MOST DIFFICULT WHERE THOUGHT IS CONCERNED. BUT WAIT A MINUTE, DO WE NOT USE THOUGHT TO EXPRESS WHAT WE FEEL TO BE TRUE..PROVIDE A REASON FOR FEELING SUCH? AHHHH. THE PROBLEM..'WE' USE 'THOUGHT'. IS THE 'WE' DIFFERENT THAN 'THOUGHT'..IS THERE A LITTLE MAN/WOMAN SOMEWHERE IN THE BRAIN USING THIS TOOL CALLED THOUGHT? QUESTION THE PROCESS! I FEEL THAT WITTGENSTEIN FOUND LANGUAGE, THOUGHT TOO LIMITED TO COME UPON TRUTH. VIENNA WAS A HOTBED OF IDEATION WITHIN WHICH A PERSON SUCH AS A 'WITTGENSTEIN' COULD SEE WHERE THOUGHT WAS AND WAS NOT VALID. A WONDERFUL BOOK
Intellectual history, for better or for worse.......2002-04-24
This book is an attempt to situate Wittgenstein, particularly the Wittgenstein of the Tractatus, in the context of the larger modern 20th century Viennese cultural milieux. It emphasizes the importance of language and communication, or the lack thereof, in fin-de-siecle Viennese politics and society, and relates the interactions and mutual influences of Viennese cultural critics such as Karl Kraus upon the positive philosophy of Wittgenstein and the Vienna Circle. It is not intended as an introduction to Wittenstein's thought and should not be read as such. This book is written for students of cultural and/or philosophical history who want a sense of the cultural origins of early modern positivism in philosophy.
intellectual history??.......2002-01-13
okay i've been trained both in sociology and philosophy and would say the book brings the poorest of both worlds.. never believed in intellectual history in general, but this kind of book, with its judgements about Kierkeggardian or Wittgensteinian 'individualism' as a 'natural pathology' of early twentieth century continental bourgeoise society, does nothing but buttress the self-complacency of our now liberal societies. Therefore despite some 'interesting' anectodes and impressions from Habsburg Vienna, the philosophical depth of the book doesnt go above our usual journalistic wisdom. I dont understand how other reviewers found this book brilliant or anything like that. I think recommendable as passtime only.

Book Description
“Wittgenstein in Vienna” documents Wittgenstein’s life in the city: the places where he, his family and those with whom he was in contact lived, worked, entertained and were socialized. The book will be a source of enrichment to the cultural tourist in Vienna. Its authors are authorities on Wittgenstein’s philosophy especially in relation to Viennese culture and popular culture, in particular to the world of the coffee house and cabaret.

Book Description
Having visited Ireland regularly during the 1930s, Ludwig Wittgenstein resigned his Cambridge philosophy professorship in 1947 and moved there, living in a fishing village on the Atlantic coast and hotels in Dublin and the Wicklow Mountains. Although Wittgenstein spent some time out of the country, Ireland was effectively his base for three very productive years during which he worked on what would become one of his key books, the posthumously published Philosophical Investigations. Wittgenstein in Ireland represents the first sustained account of Wittgenstein's time in Ireland, placing it in its historical context. Wall pays a good deal of attention to the representation of the Irish landscape in which the Austrian philosopher found himself able to work; a large part of his writings were produced in the bleak landscapes of Ireland and Norway.
Customer Reviews:
Factual but Ineffectual.......2001-10-19
While the author presents many of the facts of Wittgenstein's visits to Ireland (many of them culled from Monk's bio), he makes little effort to DO anything with them. Wittgenstein's fascination with both Norway and Ireland as places of solitude for him to accomplish "real work" is a significant influence on his philosophy. It is a shame that a book of such promise fails to deliver. (But, as with the other review, still necessary for the completist).
NOT SURE EXACTLY WHO THIS IS FOR.......2001-02-19
but the idea appealed to me so I bought it. The author (not a philosopher) went to Ireland and essentially followed Wittgenstein's (50 year old)footsteps while there. He took a lot of pictures to help you see the views that Wittgenstein saw but most of his biographical information comes from Monks DUTY OF GENIUS and Rhees RECOLLECTIONS OF WITTGENSTEIN. He comes across a few people who remember the strange English philosopher but no stories that make this worth its price. An insane Wittgenstein completist like myself probably couldn't resist buying this, but perhaps you should.
