A very informative book about almost any plant you would find in Kern County. The habitat descriptions for each plant are always right on target. A must have book if you are going to be doing any botany work in Kern County, California.

I liked this unusual point of view on the world of organized crime - the experience of a family preparing to vanish from their lives into a Witness Protection Program. Details of the father's criminal involvement are secondary to the problems and fears of the wife and two teenage sons. Narration shifts between the voice of the older son and the father, a technique which works fairly well. Taylor must have conducted some pretty intensive interviews to get the subjects to talk in such detail about what they thought and how they coped during such a weird time in their lives.

I've sewn a lot starting with all my many cocktail and formal dresses as a teen, whole wardrobes, kid's clothes and I rate this book a deep bargain and one the home sewer who aspires to fine clothes ought to buy. Now.
Who should not buy it? If you are in love with your serger and have perfected 92 ways to avoid basting or marking fabric, forget it. If a wardrobe in a weekend is what you want, this would definitely set you on a different track that's not going that way. If you can't see the difference between a $30 skirt and a $300 skirt, let alone a $3,000 one, you probably won't care for half the stuff in this book. But if the idea of making your own couture quality clothes excites you, this is your book.
This is not for the uncertain beginner who wants to know everything, but a brave beginner could use it and learn a lot about finishing and fitting alongside standard pattern instructions. The intermediate and experienced sewer will get the most from it fastest. The basic theme is how couture differs from everything else. For instance--far fewer darts. For instance a lot more hand sewing, even of major seams. It is explicit in the areas it covers, exactly how to mount a collar, or exactly how long a basting stitch should be and when you should use a running stitch or backstitch. Which end of the thread from the spool goes in your hand-sewing needle. Now there's something most of us never even thought about,and it is a tiny thing, yet knowing the right way helps. There are a number of techiques that make usually difficult areas a lot easier.
The beauty of this book is a subtle one. Claire Shaeffer can write lucid instructions. It is not an easy thing to explain sewing steps that don't sound like jabberwocky, and she can.
Some will hate the old pictures, but those with designer instincts or artistic types will understand them as inspiration and examples to prime the creative spirits.
I've already improved my finish product with a couple of techniques. Wish I had this book 30 years ago.

Though ostensibly a how-to manual on wedding gown construction, this magnificent book teaches all about advanced dressmaking skills, and its principles can be applied to creating many other types of haute-couture-style gowns. The very thorough text details all aspects of fabrics and construction: the unique characteristics of each type of fashion fabric, including extensive information on manipulating lace; preparing the muslin mockup (a necessary first step to ensure a perfect fit); adjusting the bodice, sleeves, and skirt and joining them all together; adding ornamentation; and handling bustles and trains. The final chapter presents all the specifics of making four gowns of different styles. The novice and even the advanced sewer will learn much here, and perhaps best of all, pattern-drafting experience is not required--the author works her transformations on purchased patterns. If you're ambitious enough to make your own wedding gown, this book is absolutely essential, but even if you're hiring someone else to custom-make your gown, you'll find this an invaluable guide. I bought this in addition to Bridal Gowns:How to Make the Wedding Dress of Your Dreams. This book had some different ways of approaching the same topics in the other book so it was nice to have a different perspective. She goes into detail on fabrics and lace and how to use them, bustles, embellishents and takes you step by step through the making of several of the gowns you see in full color in the "gallery" in the front of the book. Also includes detailed construction techniques to give the dress a couture look inside and out. I would highly recommend this book!

If you have a strong interest in making bodices this is a good book to add to your collection.
For me, the only problem is the limmited amount of techniques being described.
Susan Khalje for me is someone who really knows what she's talking about, but she seems a little conservative. ( style wise )
Then again, i'm european and i have this problem with more books from the us.
But, i am glad i have bought it.
A MUST HAVE for all sewing enthusiasts.......2001-07-24
I bought this book never having heard of the author before. I was fairly "blown away" by the high quality of the information offered, the wonderful works shown and the fact that this author obviously cares about those who will use her book. She provides her readers with some of the best, complete and accurate information I have ever seen written in a book. The reader (in this case me) knows that she/he is being provided with information of the highest standard, the author doesn't withhold important facts and obviously loves what she does as seen in the quality work she produces. Sewing from the soul.
I don't do Bridal Sewing but am interested in Couture Sewing. This book is one of the finest on the subject. I highly recommend it.

Information and inspiration!!.......2004-05-10
I own "Designer Techniques" and I am perplexed about the review that "lopuff" wrote. She can't get past the photos because they are a "bad re-visit to the '80's...can we say vests and big hair?" I can only assume she didn't look carefully at the photos--she makes them out to be some fashion disaster, when they are really modern, light-hearted and kind-of chic. The photos that illustrate the techniques (as well as the illustrations and text) are informative, and that's what counts here. And, as for the techniques themselves, "lopuff" may feel thse are nothing revolutionary but, if you have ever actually done a lot of sewing, you know how valuable RELIABLE techniques can be in saving time and effot. THAT is what is revolutionary about this book.
Accessible Couture Sewing.......2004-05-09
Finally, someone has written a book on sewing techniques for those of us who also like beautiful clothes. It's fun to see how exciting clothes can be made using techniques and materials accessible to any home sewer. He uses pictures of his own creations to demonstrate the success of his techniques. The instructions are detailed and thorough. He tackles hard techniques and shows you the steps you must go through to get results. I was tired of books that showed me easy techniques, with only so-so results. I find this a book that I use over and over again... and I have many sewing books. I believe this is a book written by someone who actually uses the techniques himself to create beautiful clothes.
can't get past the photos.......2002-09-02
The content is okay--how to do buttonholes and interfacing-- but nothing revolutionary...same as all the other "couture secrets" books (if you've read "The Entrepreneur's Guide to Sewn Product Manufacturing," you will know that these couture "secrets" are kind of a farce, since the designers by legal contract cannot reveal their so-called "secrets"). Although the book is published in the 90s, the photos and examples are like a bad revisit to the 80s...can we say vests and big hair? As a result, I couldn't see myself directly applying any of the techniques.

Mr. Kings grasp of the world of Designer Techniques is immesurable. This book is a treasure. Techniques are shown and techniques described in easy to follow instructions for the home sewer. The book has some real COOL TRICKS to incorporate into your next sewing project for garments and home dec. Mr. Kings life story is just as facinating as his "bag of tricks." This book covers a mirad of subjects from what tools and equiptment you should have in your sewing room, through pocket techniques and tasseled handbags. Don't get the wrong idea, this is not just high end couture sewing techniques, it is shortcut methods and sound advice for any sewer - a great reference. I especially like the descriptions and ACTUAL PHOTOGRAPHS of the different interfacings, and underlinings and cordings and piping, so that I can go into a store and point to what I want!!! If you have limited $$$ to spend on your sewing library, don't leave this one on the store shelf!

Compassionate, In-Depth And Packed With Great Tips.......2004-08-23
I read this book as a biological parent and a stepparent. I really appreciate the author's deep and compassionate understanding of the primitive connection between parents and their biological children in stepfamilies-a connection that can leave stepparents feeling like outsiders. Because the author honors this important bond between divorced parents and their kids, she does a beautiful job of explaining the incredibly complex nature of relationships in stepfamilies. I love the author's warm, personal approach and her ability to create empathy for all members of a stepfamily. She does a great job of helping stepparents view the world from their partners' and stepchildren's point of view. She also offers very helpful tips about how to bond with stepchildren, including sample conversations about difficult topics. The bonding tips include "Conversation Starters That Get Stepchildren Talking" and other creative ideas. This book is a gold mine for stepparents!

We are a treatment foster home and Suzen was our clinical specialist for almost a year. I have a step child that I was having problems with and Suzen suggested that we read her book and see if it would help. It helped me because I at times seemed like I was in competition with my step-son for his father's attention. It showed me new ways to deal with this and how to come to terms with it. It also helped me with the foster children in our home and really had a large impact on how I dealt with those children. I feel Suzen writes from the heart and some very good points in her book. I would recommend this book highly to any family which is dealing with difficult step-children. It is worth every penny.

A Charmed Couple: A Charming Book.......2001-09-06
A Charmed Couple introduced me to Walter and Matilda Gay, American expatriates in France in the late 19th and early 20th century. Walter Gay was a painter, primarily of interiors of chateaus and grand houses of France and America. Matilda was a society hostess and dedicated diarist. Both were unknown to me before I received this book as a gift (and a very fine gift it makes, too). The Gays were friends with important artists, writers and political figures, as well as English and French aristrocrats and many wealthy, international socialites. Quoting often from Matilda Gay's diary with its witty, observant and often acerbic comments on people she knew, author William Rieder gives brief, anecdotal accounts of the Gays' friendships with a diverse group that included writers Henry James and Edith Wharton, the artist John Singer Sargent, Robert and Mildred Bliss (who later created a beautiful home and garden at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C.), Henry Clay Frick and his daughter Helen (whose house is preserved as the Frick Collection in New York City). The text is interesting and witty, the reproductions of Walter Gay's paintings of beautiful rooms and views are delightful, and the book design is attractive. A Charmed Couple, as a whole, is a lovely, frothy concoction -- fun to read and to look at.

Mr. Rieder has fashioned a fascinating account, both artistically and sociologically, about a farily obscure artist and his wife. As world travellers they both entertained and were feted by John Singer Sargent, Edith Wharton, Henry James, Elsie de Woolfe, Henry Frick Clay and an entire bouquet of royalty. They seem to have helped define the great Golden Years before the First World War changed everything. Mr. Rieder has effortlessly captured this with both wit and insight. It's handsomely produced with many photographs and images of Gay's work. I've found it to be a perfect gift item.
