1 out of 5 stars do not rely on this book.......2007-08-30

Do not rely on this book. Despite the 2007 copyright, it is way, way out of date and will seriously harm your trip. It certainly harmed out trip.

    1) Prices are way off--not just by 10 or 20% but by hundreds of per cent. For example, things listed as $20 sometimes cost $50.

    2) The list of hotels is way out of date for every place we went. Some hotels had actually gone out of business years prior to 2007, which is this book's copyright. If you are considering a trip later than 2007, this problem will be still worse. This was true in Marmaris and Bergama and probably many other places.

    3) Maps were wrong. Not just inaccurate, but wrong. For example, the location in Marmaris of the ferry to Rhodes was wrong. This was disastrous for us, possibly causing us to miss the ferry. Also, the streets on the map were labelled with names while the actual street signs used numbers instead of names. This may have been due to a renaming of the streets prior to 2007, and the book's map should have reflected the what the signs say.

    4) Schedules were wrong. For example, the dolmuses to Troy do NOT leave every 20 minutes as the book says, but every hour, even during peak season.

    5) The index is quite incomplete. You should be able to look up a name of a museum, for example in the index and find it in seconds. However, with such an incomplete index, finding information in the book can be a lengthly project--difficult on a busy street corner.

I certainly hope they fix this book, but in its present state it should be avoided--there are other books on travelling in Turkey to use in the meantime.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing - Not Recommended.......2007-07-18

This is a review of the latest (2007) edition of this book.

This was a difficult review for me to write since I have been a fan of "Rough Guides" (and before that, "Real Guides") for some time. While it is a so-so catalog of sights, restaurants, and bars (although disorganized, as others have pointed out), the book is listless and oddly detached in its discussion of Turkey. A quick read of the "basics" can easily convince the reader that it is very difficult to obtain a coffee in Istanbul, the tap water is akin to sewage ("orange"), and a glass of wine? Forget it, the fundamentalists have taken over. Sounds like great fun, eh? Of course all the aforementioned observations are totally untrue. I found the book depressing and sour in tone, if not misleading. Indeed, the book addresses the reader as if he or she were planning a trip to a far off prison farm. For alternatives, try A Hedonist's Guide to Istanbul by Nick Hackworth or the Lonely Planet guide. Although not perfect, both will instill you with the excitement and awe that Turkey can (and does) inspire.

1 out of 5 stars The last Rough Guide I will buy.......2007-05-22

I found the Rough Guide to Turkey extremely frustrating. It is the most poorly organized travel book I have used. Even good information, if poorly organized, becomes useless. I found myself frequently having to piece together information from 3 or 4 different sections to decipher anything useful.
    Transportation information: useless.
Accommodation listing: mixed. Of two hotels marked with their highest recommendation, one was very good, the other the worst we stayed in. After that we stopped using the book's suggestions, and just asked other travelers.
    Historical information: good, concise, interesting.
Site and activity information: incomplete or incorrect.
We were traveling independently by public transportation for 9 days throughout northern and western Turkey. Whenever I saw another traveler with a different guide book, I begged to borrow it. My Rough Guide ended up in the trash can.

5 out of 5 stars The best guide book possible.......2003-05-20

The Rough Guide to Turkey is extremely comprehensive and fun. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in Turkey, not only to those who will be visiting.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, opinionated, and sensible.......2003-02-15

I used this book for a driving trip along the western and southern coasts, beginning in Istanbul, remaining west of Ankara, and concluding in Antalya.

I was impressed with this book. I found its lodging and restaurant recommendations quite useful and reliable, though they are not as low-budget as, say, Let's Go. However, Turkey is so inexpensive that even the budget-conscious need not stay or eat at the cheapest places. I like the fact that lodging recommendations are located on clear maps with numbers keyed to the text--this simple thing is often absent in guides to Turkey, and what a pain when you're constantly in new places! Nightlife is covered, as is the nearest post office and local travel agency for that last-minute flight back to Istanbul that you were sure you wouldn't need because you would be driving back yourself.

Contemporary, historical, and archaelogical information is surprisingly detailed and plentiful. When the authors do not like something, they can be stinging. While some might find this approach annoying (it is very English), I buy a travel book for its opinions, so long as these opinions are based on real knowledge.

In sum, if you were to take only one travel book to Turkey, and if you wanted to cover major parts of the country, this Rough Guide would be ideal. Add a Blue Guide Turkey, a couple of really good atlases, and perhaps a book devoted to Istanbul, and you should be set.

        Book Description

        INTRODUCTION

Turkey is a country with a multiple identity, poised uneasily between East and West - though, despite the tourist brochure cliché, it is less a bridge between the two than a battleground, a buffer zone whose various parts have been invaded and settled from every direction since the beginning of recorded history. The country is now keen to be accepted on equal terms by the West: long the only NATO member in the Middle East region and a major recipient of US military aid, it is now also vigorously pursuing EU membership as a means of assuring future prosperity and democracy. But despite Turkish involvement with Europe dating back to the twelfth century, it is by no stretch of the imagination a thoroughly Western nation, and the contradictions - and fascinations - persist.

Turkey is a vast country - France would fit within its boundaries with plenty of room to spare - incorporating characteristics of Middle Eastern and Aegean, as well as Balkan and trans-Caucasian, countries. Mosques coexist with Orthodox churches; Roman theatres and temples crumble alongside ancient Hittite cities; and dervish ceremonies or gypsy festivals are as much a part of the social landscape as classical music concerts or delirious sports fans. The one constant in all this - and one of the things that makes Turkey such a rewarding place to travel - is the Turkish people, whose reputation for friendliness and hospitality is richly deserved; indeed you risk causing offence by refusing to partake of it, and any transaction can be the springboard for further acquaintance. Close to the bigger resorts or tourist attractions, much of this is undoubtedly mercenary, but in most of the country the warmth and generosity is genuine - all the more amazing when recent Turkish history has demonstrated that outsiders usually only bring trouble in their wake.

Politically, modern Turkey was a bold experiment, founded on the remaining Anatolian kernel of the Ottoman Empire, once among the world's largest, and longest-lasting, imperial states. The country arose from defeat after World War I, almost entirely the creation of a single man of demonic energy and vision - Kemal Atatürk. The Turkish War of Independence, fought against those victorious Allies intending to pursue imperialistic designs on Ottoman territory, has (with slightly stretched analogy - Turkey was never a colony) often been seen as the prototype for all Third World "wars of liberation". It led to an explicitly secular Republic, though one in which almost all of the inhabitants are at least nominally Muslim (predominantly Sunni).

Turkey's heritage as home to the caliphate and numerous dervish orders, plus contemporary Islamist movements, still often deflects its moral compass south and east rather than northwest. Turks, except for a small minority in the southeast, are not Arabs, and loathe being mistaken for them; despite a heavy lacing of Persian and Arabic words, the Turkish language alone, unrelated to any neighbouring one except Azeri, is sufficient to set its speakers apart. The population is, however, in spite of official efforts to enforce uniformity, remarkably heterogeneous ethnically. When the Ottoman Empire imploded early in the twentieth century, large numbers of Muslim Slavs, Kurds, Greeks, Albanians, Crimean Tatars, Azeris, Daghestanlis, Abkhazians and Circassians - to name only the most numerous non-Turkic groups - streamed into Anatolia, the safest refuge in an age of anti-Ottoman Nationalism. This process has continued in recent years from formerly Soviet or Eastern Bloc territories (including even a few Christian Turks or Gaugaz from Moldavia), so that the diversity of the people endures, constituting one of the surprises of travel in Turkey.

There are equally large disparities in levels of development and income. Istanbul boasts clubs as expensive and exclusive as any in New York or London, while town-centre shops are full of imported luxury goods, yet in the chronically backward eastern interior you'll encounter standards and modes of living scarcely changed from a century ago. Following a severe crash in early 2001, the Turkish economy languishes on the ropes and the country is heavily in debt, threatening the modernization process begun during the late nineteenth century. It's make-or-break time for a country aspiring to full EU membership: has Westernization struck deep roots in the culture, or does it extend no further than a mobile-phone- and credit-card-equipped urban élite?

Turkey has been continuously inhabited and fought over for close on ten millennia, as the layer-cake arrangement of many archeological sites and the numerous fortified heights testify. The juxtaposed ancient monuments mirror the bewildering succession of states - Hittite, Urartian, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Armeno-Georgian - that held sway here before the twelfth century. There is also, of course, an overwhelming number of graceful Islamic monuments dating from the eleventh century onwards, as well as magnificent city bazaars, still holding their own despite the encroachments of chain stores and shopping malls. The country's modern architecture is less pleasing, the consequence both of government policy since 1950 and of returned overseas workers eager to invest their earnings in real estate - an ugliness manifest at the coastal resorts, where the beaches are rarely as good as the tourist-board hype. Indeed it's inland Turkey - Asiatic expanses of mountain, steppe, lake, even cloud forest - that may leave a more vivid memory, especially when accented by some crumbling kervansaray, mosque or castle.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for budget travelers.......2005-12-12

We travel extensively all over the world and have consistently found the Rough Guide series to be the most in-depth, accurate, an useful. The guide to Turkey is no exception. On our trip last year, we used the Rough Guide to find many exceptional and cheap restaurants, often eating for less than $5 a meal for two. When we did not use the book to locate a place to eat, we were disappointed with overpriced, unimpressive fare. Likewise, the hotel we selected in Instanbul using the Rough Guide was exactly as the book described: well located (half-mile from Aya Sofia), incredible value, friendly staff, free Turkish tea, nice free breakfast, and very friendly staff. Venturing out of Instanbul without a car I think would be difficult, as the book points out. I think that is a fair warning, and the authors of the book should not be criticized for cautioning travelers that public transport outside of the cities is somewhat lacking. Another benefit of the Rough Guide is that it often includes interesting sites a little off the beaten path that other travelers often miss and complete enough descriptions to help you appreciate them.

        1 out of 5 stars I won't buy Rough Guide again..........2004-01-24

This was my wife and my second visit to Turkey. We're budget travelers/backpackers. The first time (1 month), we used the Lonely Planet, which wasn't great either. This time (6 weeks) we tried the Rough Guide. What a mistake! Here are some of the problems we had:
        - Everything is written as if you have your own car. Lip service is paid to public/alternative forms of transport, but rarely is any useful information given.
        - The author(s) must have had their own car, or relied heavily on taxis, because walking even a kilometer seems anathemic: the book frequently suggests that you bargain hard for a taxi if arriving someplace at odd hours, despite the fact that the city center and hotels area kilometer or less away. This pattern is repeated with sites as well: the author's favorite phrase must be: "really only practiable if you have your own transport..." Even a moderately fit person could get to many places that were described this way, even if you only walk 1km/hour.
        - Consistent with the above, the author obviously zipped around on a $100+/day budget, because the budget accomidation options are poorly researched, often placed wrong on maps, or absent entirely.
        - No sense of the relative merit of sites is given. If you want to wander aimlessly, and, in my opinion, waste your time, this book is fine. However, Turkey is large enough that even with plenty of time one can only hope to cover a fraction of the worthwhile places to visit: hence, we need some indication of the better places to spend our time.
        - The overall tone of the book is seems to be geared towards a vacationer who wants to mix a little history with beach and booze. It seemed that the most important thing to note about a town was: where can you find liquor? What's the hip place? I would have liked to see more along the lines of interesting places to eat: for example, "this popular pastanesi is Antakya is visited for its..."
        - Lack of a map for towns that many travelers will need to visit. Fortunately, many tourist office will have a town plan, assuming you can catch them during business hours. But no map for Gaziantep?? Give me a break. (The town is a transport hub, and worth visiting anyway for the stunning -- newly unearthed -- mosaics in the museum; far better than the renowned ones in Antakya.)

These are the big problems, the other minor inaccuracies and inconsistencies were so frequent that I became accustomed to them. At least now I know what to expect from Rough Guides!

5 out of 5 stars Most Useful Guide to a Wonderful Country.......2004-01-18

This is the best single guidebook we've found for Turkey. We escort small groups to Turkey...and the Rough Guide is consistently the best single reference for general and historical information. Combined with the Blue Guide to Turkey, it's easy to plan your trip. As usual with the Rough Guides, it has a lot of information for many types of travelers without sacrificing cultural and historical details. Well organized, with good maps (much better than the Lonely Planet series). We've made 5 trips to Turkey now, and find something new from this book each time.

1 out of 5 stars worse than no guide at all.......2003-11-18

We were in Istanbul recently and purchased this guide to help us get around. It was worse than useless. There wasn't enough information cautioning us against using the taxis (which are notorious for ripping off tourists), and the guide didn't offer much helpful advice on using the bus, except to say that it wasn't safe. After getting really ripped off by a cab driver, we figured out the bus system on our own and found it to be clean, safe, efficient, and reliable--obviously regular Turks use this, no problem. Much nicer, in fact, than taking the bus in most U.S. cities. To make things worse, the restaurant reviews were out of date--of 2 Chinese restaurants recommended by this guide, one had gone out of business some time ago, and the other, said to be "popular with the local Chinese community," seemed to be entirely staffed by non-Chinese Turks who served lousy food. I especially disliked the guide author's tendency to use Turkish words without translating them, especially when those words were not in the glossary in the back of the book and were not in the index either. Finally, the maps were not very good and difficult to find in the book.

5 out of 5 stars One of three competitors.......2000-08-19

Two other books Lonely Planet and Greek Island Hopping are aimed at the budget traveller visiting the smaller islands. This one and Lonely Planet also cover the whole of Crete. Greek Island Hopping has more detail about actual travelling and about the boats themselves and more maps, but only touches on the northern ports of Crete. I like all three. Greek Island Hopping wuuld be most useful if you want to find out how to get to a small island, or how to get off one.

        5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2000-05-30

This book does an amazingly good job of covering so many Greek islands so well. If it covers the island you're interested in (and it probably does), you'll be provided with plenty of accurate, interesting, helpful detail on any just about any specific area or village of the island which interests you. While agree the Athens part could be a bit beefed up (as we all invariably end up in Athens at some point or another for varying bits of time) the island sections far make up for it.

4 out of 5 stars nuts and bolts greek islands.......1999-12-27

Primarily geared towards the independent low-budgeter, the book is packed with accurate, practical detail and covers more remote island villages than other similar books. Reads like an encyclopedia and thus compliments other books (eg. the Facaros/Cadogan book and this are a great combination) Better than Let's Go or Lonely Planet for solely islands travel. Doesn't have a very good Athens portion. I'd suggest getting the Facaros book first and then if a return trip or looking for more minute and/or remote detail get this to compliment.

4 out of 5 stars Packed with information.......1999-11-21

It is geared toward students and those on a tighter budget. Although, the info is valuable to any budget. It is fairly similar to Let's Go and Lonely Planet. Nicer than Let's Go and probably in a dead heat with Lonely Planet. It reads like an encyclopedia and is packed with good information on just about everything, down to the smallest detail in many instances. The Athens section is inadequate.

            Book Description

Detailed account of Manson's life, including his attempt to break into the LA scene of the mid '60s, to his bizarre relationship with the Beach Boys, his obsession with The Beatles, his demo releases from prison which achieved quadruple platinum sales, the resultant lawsuit to ban his royalties, his influence on Guns n' Roses, and his links with ne-Nazi rock underground.

4 out of 5 stars A musical history of Manson.......2003-11-05

To some people, they might not like this book, but doing my term paper on Manson, it was very helpful because I was showing the relationship between Manson and music. If you are reading this book just for factual information, there is better information available; but if you are reading this book for what the attended purpose is for: to understand how Tommy Udo relates music to Manson's famous history.

One of the reasons why this book is so good is because Udo did not just write about Manson, he actually asked people their point of view of Manson. Some girl said that she thought Manson was cool and Udo asked her some questions back and you could totally see that she knew almost next to nothing about Manson. Udo takes many points of view in to consideration when he wrote this book. Overall it is a good book and I think you should buy the book ONLY if you are interested in reading about the relationship of Manson and music.

            2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2002-10-02

There are many more worthy books on the Manson case out there then this one. I patiently waited for publication, and was hugely disapointed in the whole book. It is an excellent music history but as far as anything on Manson goes it is just the same old same old...full of factual errors that even someone new to the case would spot...

Save your money and either borrow a friends copy (if they're unlucky enough to have purchased it) or borrow it from the library where I am sure no one will steal it as they have all the good books on Manson...

              Book Description

Jewelry making is one of the most popular craft trends, and its audience continues to grow. Few jewelry books on the market emphasize the importance of the design relationship between beads, wire, and jewelry findings—the “nuts and bolts” of any piece. This book will show not only how to design and build your own spectacular jewelry out of beads and wire but how to design and create your own findings as well.

Most jewelry making books are geared for the beginner and provide little information for intermediate to advanced jewelry makers. Making Designer Bead and Wire Jewelry contains illustrated how-to techniques, full-color project photos, project instructions, and numerous tips that enhance the styles and skills presented. Intermediate and advanced jewelry makers will learn new techniques for creating signature elements for their designs, while beginners will get a handle on honing their skills.

              4 out of 5 stars A good guide.......2007-07-25

I bought this book as a gift for my mother. She has found it useful, easy to understand. It is full of photographs and illustrations of all the procedures and so it is very "user friendly".

              3 out of 5 stars Dressed-up beginner's book ...'Bead on a Wire' recommended instead........2007-06-08

I was disappointed with this book because it had the same info with less design ideas, as 'Bead on a Wire' by Sharilyn Miller. To be fair, if I had bought this book first, instead of vice-a-versa, I might not have felt as let down as I was; but, I don't think so...
All the wire designs seem to be based on one theme--the two, three or four 'Loop Eye' headpin, and how to string beads.
The book should have BEGINNER'S somewhere on the front cover. If you have already have a book listing the basic tools & techniques, you don't need this one.

              3 out of 5 stars nothing exicting.......2007-05-01

I enjoy reading beadwork books and have over 100 books. Most of them are Japanese, Korean and Chinese bead books, which mainly focus on stringing and are quite different from the beadwork in US. Then I was thinking to read more about wirework books and decided to get some from Amazon...

After reading the previous reviews, I thought this one might be good... But I must say that it is very disappointing... The instruction is OK and somewhat too simple and you can find similar info via internet...

The projects and the gallery are not exciting at all. (If you look closer at the pictures, the quality of some projects are really lousy.)... Many commercial online bead suppliers have much better design gallery... Another complaint is the instruction drawing. It seems there isn't a consistency to show the dominant hand and non-dominant hand ( which is important to use the tool , I think...)

If you are a very beginner, probably the best wirework book you should consider is "All wired up" by Mark Lareau. If you like step-by-step photography, I think "Getting Started Making Wire Jewelry and More " by Linda Chandler and Christine R. Ritchey is a good pick.

I would not purchase this book if I wasn't too lazy to check it out at a local Michael's.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2007-02-10

Very good for anyone wanting to work with wire but might have been a little afraid. I am a beginner and it is awesome in its details and drawings for making findings and jewelry. I like all the practical jewelry pieces shown as well and have already made some of them.

This book is a bit disappointing. It reads like a horoscope and lacks substance, findings from research, stories about actual children and useful advice.

                  5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2006-08-02

This book is the best of its kind, and the only one that sums up the stages of development. Thanks goodness it is back in print. There are a few slightly dated bits, but most of the work by Ilg and Ames is timeless. You MUST have this book while raising your children, if only to be aware of the alternating inner and outer periods of disequilbrium and how they manifest. This book helps you keep being the grownup, because it gives you such a good overview of child development.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Time-Tested Book (i.e. proven through generation after generation).......2006-05-20

I thought that I might not like this book, since my wise nutritionist (the only nutritionist I know locally who has a PhD and degrees from several top-notch universities) recommended it...a grandmother. For some reason, the age diffence bothered me. So, I purchased a used book from Amazon due to my skepticism. But, the book turned out to be time-tested afterall. The authors mentioned early on in the book that children's behavioral cycle can shift on the age time-line, but that the order of the cycles are quite stable. I'm assuming that it depends on whether a child is more or less advance than his/her peers and what environmental issues are involved (i.e. parents getting a divorce, moving to a new location, switching schools, etc...). I've found the cycles to be quite accurate so far.

I love the feeling of knowing what my kids are going through are a perfectly normal behavioral stages in their lives and that they will grow in and out of them. I feel calmer knowing rather than stressing over things that my kids do. My daughter is shy/reserved one year (i.e. won't volunteer during circle time or stand up when it's her turn for show and tell) and a major risk-taker who's outgoing the next (i.e. will run around the neighborhood ringing doorbells and phoning friends out to play). I guess God made us that way to balance us out (i.e. to prepare us to be more balanced adults. Otherwise, we'd be stuck either as super shy or as a major risk-taker if we are not allowed by our parents to try out both ends of the spectrum to get to that equilibrium.

5 out of 5 stars Long forgotten book.......2006-03-09

When my children were young, I often referred to the original printing of this book. Now with grandchildren, I have given a copy to my daughter. In reading through it, she has become more relaxed because she is experiencing stages and changes in her children that, according to the book, are very normal for each age. I am now going to order another one for myself!

                  1 out of 5 stars Not helpful.......2006-02-18

I returned this book. It is boring and seems very old fashioned. More like a textbook than a parent guide which was what I was looking for.

Henry James fictionalized her, John Singer Sargent painted her, Bernard Berenson advised her. But art collector extraordinaire Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924) was more than a rich socialite who lucked into friendships with the leading cultural figures of her day. Boston historian Douglass Shand-Tucci convincingly claims her as a pioneering multiculturalist--her famous museum in Fenway Court enshrined Asian art as well as that of the old masters--and a rebel who befriended Jews, homosexuals, and other outcasts from Victorian society. Shand-Tucci's highly colored, romantic prose aptly evokes his fiery, willful, egotistical subject.

                    Book Description

"The narrative is one long, messy, juicy gossip peppered with exclamations. . . . But gossip is an effective rhetoric for this life. . . . Gardner may have hoped, by burning her letters, to escape capture in yet another book plotted like a novel by Henry James. She might have liked this garrulous, sociable portrait of her time."
-- Diane Wood Middlebrook, New York Times Book Review (front page review)

"This intimate engrossing biography finally gives the creator of one of the world's great museums credit for her achievements. . . . The author's expertise in American cultural history greatly enriches his narrative."
                    -- The New Yorker

"It's the unauthorized story of the grandest of Boston's grand dames that any sentient person wants to read. The Art of Scandal has a delightful sense of the city that once was the Athens of America."
                    -- Alex Beam, Boston Globe

"He dares to paint in words the woman John Singer Sargent painted on canvas. . . . She is always engagingly human and brimming with life."
-- Daniel Aaron, The New Republic

"Gardner's heretofore fugitive life story is riveting because Shand-Tucci turns out to be erudite, witty, and wise. . . . Shand-Tucci describes her adventures, eccentricities, and resounding success as a muse, mentor, patron, and designer, shedding light on a singular woman and her influential role in the evolution of American culture."

When one has chance to visit Boston, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is a unique cultural institution that should not be missed. One of the nation's most eclectic and idiosyncratic private museums, it represents the personal vision of its namesake, Isabella Steward Gardner, a woman with the means and confidence to assemble an art collection of enormous breadth and exquisite quality. At the same time, her wealth and influence gave her the ability to live life on her terms, despite the steady drumbeat of ugly gossip.
Although I have a beautifully detailed volume on Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924) and her museum Fenway Court, in my library, it was an "authorized" book, and as such that was left out of the story. However, it is a "warts and all" book that Douglas Shand-Tucci has written despite being in sympathy with his fascinating subject. Gardner married into wealth and she used her husband's cash to collect art - and people. Despite her marriage into the Gardner family, who were influential Boston Brahmins, she carried on scandalous affairs and surrounded herself with gay artists and aesthetes. Many of these relationships were ambiguous at the time for homosexuality had to remain far beneath the surface in the 19th century. John Singer Sargent painted Mrs. Gardner and their relationship was used as the model for Eleanor Palfrey's novel "The Lady and the Painter."
The expatraite art historian Bernard Berenson advised her on her purchases, which included Vermeer's gem-like "The Concert" and Titan's great "Rape of Europa." She collected some of Sergeant's major works including the massive "El Jaleo" and he painted a famous portrait of her, as did Whistler and the Swedish artist Anders Zorn. She seemed to collect almost everything including Asian art, which she successfully mixed with the European paintings when she built Fenway Court, her Venician palace close by Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, which was constructed at the turn-of-the-century.
Shand-Tucci's book is carefully researched and despite the fact that Gardner burned her letters, he seems to have sorted out the tangled web of relationships between the patroness and her friends, lovers and in turn, their relations with each other. This is no small accomplishment, as Garnder knew almost everyone who was anyone in America and Europe. In addition to close relationships with Sargent and Berenson, she knew George Santayana, Richard Wagner, Edith Wharton, Charles Elliot Norton, Henri Matisse, Henry Adams, Henry James and William James.
"The Art of Scandal" recreates as era of elegance, taste and affluence, of the long, languid decades before the hell of "The Great War" when the leading families of Europe and America began to intermix, and the treasures of Europe made their ways to our homes and museums.

1 out of 5 stars why oh why?.......2003-12-16

when i set out to write a research paper about Isabella Stewart Gardner, i decided to read her biographies. i opted to read them in chronological order, starting with Morris Carter's published in 1925. i was having a ball learning about such an interesting woman, until i got to the Shand-Tucci biography. this book confused me so much, not only because of it's writing style, but also because of it's content. Mr. Shand-Tucci presents information completely opposite to the info in Morris Carter and Louise Hall Tharp's biographies. these differences were so extreme that i ended up writing my research paper about them. no joke. three thousand words later, and i still feel i could write more on the faults of this book.

Just a side note, i talked to a friend who works at the Gardner Museum, and they stopped selling this biography in the museum shop because its allegations against Mrs. Gardner are so farfetched. if you want to read a good biography of Isabella Stewart Gardner, i highly recommend "Mrs. Jack" by Louise Hall Tharp.

1 out of 5 stars The sentences that never end..........2003-08-22

I am an avid reader and I find the subject of Bella Gardner fascinating, and I was incredibly excited to find yet another book about her amazing life! Yet, little did I know that it would take me almost three weeks to slog through this terribly written piece! With little organization and darting from one thought to another, it is barely held together. But, dear reader, the worst is yet to come. Let me give you an example of just one of the "typical" sentences that make up the writing found within, and remember this is just one sentence: "Perhaps her most vivid counsel ever as muse and mentor, into which central venue of Isabella Gardner's life first James and then Crawford and now Sargent have conducted us, that advice reflects the fact that just as it has been argued of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's friendship with Arthur Hallam that although their relationship lasted a mere four years, those "four years probably [were] the equal in psychic importance to the other seventy-nine of Tennyson's life," so with act one of Gardner's and Crawford's affair, which lasted barely two years."
Now I realize how incredibly terrifying this is, and believe me, I have left punctuation, wording and phrasing exactly as they are found in the book. This is but one of three hundred pages of such dismal phrasing. Get the point...

                    1 out of 5 stars Ugh again.......2002-06-18

Just returned from a trip to Boston...during a dinner party in Cambridge, the following was overheard:

Harvard professor: "...my wife was reading a book about I.S. Gardner, but said it was so bad, she couldn't go on..."

It sounded familiar, and then I recalled this awful book. Sure enough, it was the same.

1 out of 5 stars Feigned eloquence and inflated ego torture the reader.......2002-04-11

When you have to spend 10 minutes rereading a sentence to fully understand it's intent, a problem exists. Shand I fear purposefully writes in this manner because he is assuming himself to be eloquent, quite the contrary. Apart from extremely convoluted sentences, he has a habit of phrasing things in the negative thereby obscuring what could have been a VERY READABLE sentence in the affirmative. The use of exclamation points reached its limit surely in the first few chapters.

Furthermore, Shand has an extremely annoying habit of inserting himself into the biography which is completely inappropriate. For instance in a discussion of Gardener in the role of a muse, Shand inserts commentary on his own author/muse relationship.

                      Book Description

A Garden of Memories-A Written Remembrance is a wonderful book which enables family and friends to share fond memories of their loved one. The book contains beautiful artwork and insightful quotes with plenty of room to write personal thoughts. A Garden of Memories-A Written Remembrance could be displayed at a wake, funeral or memorial ceremony allowing guests to enter a favorite memory of the deceased person. Many times it is difficult for people to express themselves to the family yet wish to share a remembrance of the loved one with them. Without a book like this, the story, memory or thought could be lost forever. This provides an excellent opportunity to do just that. The book also has a place for photographs and keepsakes. This is a very caring, thoughtful and timely gift for the bereaved.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book which can help to ease pain and sorrow........1999-06-16

The memories of your deceased loved-one will bring great joy and laughter and at times sadness. This book helps to capture these moments in time, to be read again and again. It will be a valuable source of healing for those who are left here to remember. Although flowers are nice, this book allows for lasting memories which will not fade. This can be passed down to younger generations so they, too, can feel a connection to the family's past.

                              Book Description

In Normandy, over 100 000 combatants from 14 different nations lie in 28 War-cemeteries on land given by France in perpetuity. These are incomparable enclaves of remembrance. They symbolize both presence and absence : the ever present cost in human lives, the absence of all those for whom so many still grieve. An all-inclusive guide, Gardens of Remembrance describes the origin of each War Cemetery, its surroundings, characteristics and geographical situation. The reader will find in this guide the story of those whose lives were taken from them, often before the age of twenty. An indispensable work for those who seek to find, remember or ponder where feelings rather than words, pass on the message forever present among the Fallen.
