Well organized but NO FACT CHECKING.......2003-12-13
While these books are always really well-organized by neighborhood, this new edition is riddled with errors. They still describe things in Lira even though they tell you Italy has converted to the Euro and information on many stores, sites and hotels is incorrect, especially hours. We went to many churches that were closed. Some stores no longer even exist. Also, lots of missing information, particularly on new hotels. Use this book for its useful maps and reviews, but check addresses and hours carefully before you go anywhere.

Book Description
The present work contains particulars of the great Napoleon not to be found in any other publication, and forms an interesting addition to the information generally known about him.
The writer of the Letters (whose name is said to have been Sewarton, and who had been a friend of the Empress Josephine in her happier, if less brilliant days) gives full accounts of the lives of nearly all Napoleon's Ministers and Generals, in addition to those of a great number of other characters, and an insight into the inner life of those who formed Napoleon's Court.
All sorts and conditions of men are dealt with - adherents who have come over from the Royalist camp, as well as those who have won their way upwards as soldiers, as did Napoleon himself. In fact, the work abounds with anecdotes of Napoleon, Talleyrand, Fouche, and a host of others, and astounding particulars are given of the mysterious disappearance of those persons who were unfortunate enough to incur the displeasure of Napoleon.

Almost no photos of live animals, difficult read.......2007-03-25
If you are interested in a book that shows the skill bones of dead animals then you will like this book. Personally, I was interested in seeing the ANIMALS of the holy land. And I was wanting color photos so I could SEE what those animals look like. What few pictures are included in this book are all in black and white. Sure there's a lot of taxonomical information, but it is very dry, and it is not really laid out in an intuitive fashion. I was looking for a list of species with photos (preferably color photos!) or drawings of both existant and extinct animals that live (or used to live) in the Holy Land. Information about their habitat, living habits, food requirements, and migration patterns (if any) would have been most helpful. Instead I got a book that talks about the differences between the skull bones of different creatures. I've thought about returning it, but I haven't read through a whole lot of it yet, I was so dissapointed with my first glimpse. Maybe it will get better as I dig deeper. I'm afraid not though. This experience underlines why I prefer to buy from a local bookseller rather than Amazon.com when I'm not familiar with the books I'm trying to decide between to begin with.

Excellent Book.......2007-07-09
I am a beginner in cardmaking and found this book very useful. However the book is not aimed entirely at the beginners. Anyone can draw inspiration from it. The cards are very beautiful and relatively easy to make. There are lots of useful information about the tools, basic techniques, choosing the right color, even selling your cards, personal trademark, which I liked very much.
Wish I Knew I was A British Book.......2007-01-13
The problem I had with this book was finding the supplies in it. The book is from England and most of the supplies are from companies over there. I finally found them on the internet but couldn't afford the shipping. Had to substitute every single thing so I didin't get the look I wanted on most of the cards.
Quick and Clever Handmade Cards.......2007-01-04
Very good ideas for the newcomer and a good reference for all
need lots of materials to make cards.......2006-03-26
I think that the book had lots of cute ideas but they all require lots of separate materials that I did not already have in my vast collection of cardmaking and scrapbooking supplies. You could use the basic ideas and modify them to make your own cards though.

Book Description
Recreating Eden deciphers the security code to the Garden of Eden and maps the way back to the blissful existence humanity enjoyed before The Fall. In addition to explaining the mechanics of what happened when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, this practical guide to personal and planetary ascension provides instruction for reversing their fatal decision.
Recreating Eden delivers the exciting news that it is time at last for humanity's return to the Garden, and how easily we can create a harmonious new world by opting out of the dangerous modus operandi we have been utilizing since the first humans defied their creator. Outlining a couldn't-be-simpler, personal strategy for unlocking the Garden gate, and showing how Eden will manifest on a large scale by the exponential effects of individuals doing the very simple thing that is necessary, Recreating Eden lights the path to the single greatest shift in human consciousness since Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. For readers of all spiritual orientations.

Wow.......2007-07-10
Nothing has resonated more true to me than this book. It was everything I had been searching for in my journey. It eased my anxieties, gave me hope, as well as a better understanding of how the universe works. It was clearly a divinely inspired work. What a gift you have given to the world in this book! All I can say is Wow!
Recreating Eden The book that stepped up my life.......2007-03-21
Recreating Eden helped me to reduce criticism and the urge to fix every body and everything in my life. By reading Julie Hamrick's book I was enabled to rely more and more on God to enlarge my life and make my life easier. I have already had experience with these concepts through 12 step programs, the Secret Movie, and my church. This book takes working with God and making life easier to a new level. I mean that life has gotten a lot easier and more fun since reading Recreating Eden. Thank you so much Julie
Five Star Excellence!!!.......2007-03-20
I have just finished reading Recreating Eden and I truly loved every bit of it. Perhaps the most significant for me was the explanation of reverse polarity along with the diagrams. I have been a very happy student of the teachings of Abraham for several years now, and of course "The Law of Attraction" is well incorporated into my automatic thinking. However reading about reverse polarity and seeing the diagrams became such a light bulb time of connecting my dots. Julia's writing unleashes a powerfully informative journey into recreating our own eden. I wish I had this book when I was a new parent raising my son. Awareness Is.
My favorite new concept to ponder: "Unconditional Radience." Thank You, Julia.
Striking A Chord.......2006-10-15
'Recreating Eden' is a joy to read! Beautifully written, it is a must for anyone who is on the 'spiritual path'. Julia's own story will strike a chord for those who have had fleeting glimpses of a world 'beyond the veil'.
Lovely book, Julia. Loved it. Thank you.
Imelda Duffy, (Esme Conway), Author 'Into Angels', A spiritual journey for people who like to be entertained!
just finished reading Recreating Eden.......2006-09-11
"Recreating Eden is brilliant and full of sparkly shining light and thirst quenching common sense! It would be well required reading for all humans and we would truly be in Eden by embodying the qualities of our Original Self as outlined in this book! I love Julia's writing style. It has a place on my bookshelf between `A Course in Miracles Manual For Teachers` and `You Can Make It Heaven` Julia King

Book Description
When counseling breastfeeding families who ask How Weaning Happens, author Diane Bengson says, "Gradually, with love." She answers the many questions she's seen hundreds of families bring up through her years as a La Leche League Leader and wrapped her own as well as their personal experiences into her book How Weaning Happens. She covers social and cultural differences among the breastfeeding families, pressures to wean, natural weaning and various other reasons to wean. She also writes about the physical and emotional changes of mother and child in a nursing relationship. Weaning is the first complete book on the topic from LLLI, though the organization has a number of shorter publications on the subject.
Customer Reviews:
Book on Natural Weaning.......2007-09-24
I was looking for a book to help me with gentle suggestions for weaning. This book suggested natural weaning, where you wait until the child weans himself.
more about EBF than weaning.......2007-04-20
Although this book is supposed to be about weaning it is more geared to extended breast feeding. It is more based on child led weaning which correlates to the La Leche League principles. If you are looking for suggestions to wean cold turkey; this is not the book for you. This is more of an attachment parenting approach than anything. I would recommend this book but it takes a reader who has that mindset. There are many stories and quotes from mothers who have has the experience. It is wasy to read and informative. However, this is one of few books that even mention nursing past 12 months so it is more openminded in that perspective.
No help for for mother-led weaning.......2007-03-23
A La Leche League leader advised me to read this book in response to my request for advice. Everyone else I knew who had been through the weaning process had seen their children gradually lose interest. This was NOT the path my son was taking. Nursing seemed to be a crucial form of security, comfort and love for him. He was two and my husband and I were very uncomfortable with continuing to nurse, especially in public. Reading this book was very demoralizing. The author goes to great lengths to emphasize the emotional importance of nursing to children, and gives many examples of techniques mothers can use to encourage weaning without actually leading the process, none of which were helpful to me. She actually quotes one mother who says that deciding to wean her child was the worst decision she had ever made as a parent, and that it devastated her relationship with her child. Finally I realized that at two years of age, the vast majority of children have found other sources for security and comfort, so my son could too. And I had to face the fact that my feelings needed to count too. I decided to wean my son at two and a half cold turkey. He was warned well in advance and often. The first day, he was more clingy than he had ever been before, not allowing me to put him down without screaming inconsolably. My worst fears, which all sprang from this book, were haunting me. Then I discovered that he had a very high fever. I gave him some fever-reducing medicine and he was his old self again in half an hour. And he never even asked to nurse again.
Every child is unique. And so is every mother. This book has been highly appreciated by many who found it supportive of their decision to keep nursing. I found it highly insensitive and deeply UNsupportive of my decision to wean. I was especially troubled by the author's decision to share a story from a woman who went against her doctor's advice and resumed nursing after undergoing a medical procedure, thereby exposing herself to the risk of painful complications. As mothers, we give a tremendous amount of ourselves to others. But it is profoundly antifeminist to insist that we always remain self sacrificing. Each woman deserves to be supported when she has made her choices about nursing. These choices are very personal. The author should not presume to tell us nothing but horror stories about mother-lead weaning, as if this were a terrible mistake for everyone. I just want others to know that it was NOT a terrible mistake for me, and it might not be for you either. You know yourself and your child best.
Good book.......2007-01-12
While the book provides a few generic ideas for weaning, there is no specific advice on how to wean a nursing child. This book will give you a good idea of what a child-led weaning would look like. I read the book hoping for some ideas on how to wean my 2-year old, but after reading, I decided it would probably just give us both too much stress to try and wean. Now, he is still nursing and I am pregnant. So I can't really say we were at all successful. But it was a very informative read and I would recommend the book to anyone who nurses for longer than 18 months.
This book is about how a child will wean himself.......2006-05-31
This book is about how a child will eventually wean himself--NOT how you can wean your child. It provides support to a mother as she nurses her growing child--both to help the mother understand the child's needs and to help her "fend off" well-meaning onlookers who don't understand the mother's choice to let the child decide on when to wean.
Do not buy this book for help on how YOU can wean your child--you'll probably be disappointed. However, the book does give good advice on when you as a mother may want to set some boundaries regarding nursing your young child. This was one of the main benefits I received from the book.
I wanted to let my daughter nurse as long as she wanted and then let her wean when she decided to wean. We usually nursed at bedtime, nap time and other times of the day when she was in need of comfort and love. However, I began noticing the bedtime/naptime nursing sessions started to backfire on us. Instead of drifting off to a blissful sleep like she did when she was an infant, a few minutes of nursing was all she needed to regain her energy. She'd be up for another hour while I struggled to get her to sleep.
So, I instituted "nursing boundaries" at about 16 months. She was allowed to nurse whenever she wanted, just NOT at naptime and bedtime. My intent was not to wean her--the nursing boundaries were a loving way to help us avoid battles over bedtime. The result? Although given free access to nurse anytime except before sleep, my daughter decided to wean herself by 18 months. I offered, but she wasn't interested. Life was much too exciting by then to her to be slowed down by nursing.
Bottom line:
*Buy this book if you want to let your child wean himself.
*Don't buy this book if you want to stop nursing.
*Consider buying this book if you think you want to let your child nurse a while longer but are looking for some advice and alternate viewpoints on the subject, or you are thinking about weaning just because of a few problems caused by nursing (as in my bedtime struggles with my daughter).
Book Description
Throughout his life, German philosopher Karl Jaspers (1883–1969) recorded his experiences and reflections in diaries and correspondence. This comprehensive biography is the first to explore these extensive and candid private writings that illuminate not only Jaspers’ life and relationships but also the ideas he proposed in Way to Wisdom, The Question of German Guilt, and many other published works.
Suzanne Kirkbright provides a sensitive and intimate portrait of the philosopher whose work on truth, personal integrity, and the capacity for communication contrasted acutely with the erosion of such values in Germany in his lifetime. She describes how Jaspers’ Jewish wife, Gertrud, influenced his thinking, the loss in 1937 of his professorship at Heidelberg University, and his relationship with such celebrated colleagues as Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt. Kirkbright examines the unshakeable ethical content of Jaspers’ philosophy and demonstrates his unique and scrupulous personal adherence to the philosophical principles he espoused.
Customer Reviews:
It is possible to learn much about Jaspers from this work.......2007-02-22
I am not a real student of the work of Jaspers though I have read some of it especially his work on 'The Axial Age , that age in which Mankind in several different places seemed to simultaneously discover the higher moral life. Much of what I knew about Jaspers came from Hannah Arendt's chapter on him in her book 'Men in Dark Times'. There Arendt paints a picture of Jaspers as a person of highest integrity and fidelity to truth. She highly praises the humanity of her former teacher and thesis supervisor. They remained lifelong friends and were too connected by their respective relationships to Heidegger.
Kirkbright tells the story of the frail sickly Heidegger and his lifelong search for truth. She tells of the specially good marriage he had, and how wife Gertrude ( nee Mayer) contributed to his thought. Jaspers and his wife survived the war and he afterwards became a kind of moral spokesman to German society. The book does not go deeply into Jaspers' thought, nor does it analyze in depth many of the incidents and events in Jaspers' life. I for instance would have liked to know more about what Gertrude Mayer's marriage meant for her father, who was an Orthodox Jew. Kirkbright tells of how Jaspers after years of struggle achieved a position and recognition as thinker. The book tells the basic story of his life in a convincing and highly readable way.
And I am sure all those interested in Jaspers can learn much from it.
how to live in dignity ..........2005-08-18
Already as a child, German philosopher Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) suffered under bronchiktasis and an accompanying heart insufficiency, which was classified as incurable and life-shortening. the fear to die early pushed him to live concentrated and not to waste any time. Being exhausted very soon, throughout his life he was forced to work lying horizontal on a divan. His daily creative working periods (of reading and writing) had been very short, so he was obliged to budget his targets carefully. "A man will be, what he will be, via the things, he has chosen for his own affair..." was the way, he programmed himself. "The minimum of being self-determinate is associated with the joy to work. without that, everyone will get paralyzed. Therefore to save the joy of working is the main problem in the technical world. Assigned work mostly is a work, which separates being a human and being a worker. But the duties of a physician, teacher, minister etc. cannot not be technically rationalized, because they depend on vital existence ..." Jaspers noted in his tiny but important book "The Mental Situation Of Our Age". Beginning as psychiatrist (among other things with the fundamental work "PSYCHOLOGY of the WORLD VIEWS") he extended his horizon of views to a stable existence-philosophical theory, which at first united him with the academic colleague Martin Heidegger, then however, ethical standardizes taking seriously, had to lead him away from this Nazi-collaborator. Jaspers wrote after the end of WWII to the American Military Government in Germany: "Heidegger's kind of thinking appears to me unfreely, dictatorial, without any sense for communication. Nowadays it would (practiced at universities) have a fatal effect ...". Added to the lifelong illness of Jaspers was the threat by the Third Reich. Jaspers' woman was Jewess. The married couple during the Nazi-era always carried in their pockets cyanide-capsules, to be faster, if Gestapo would try to arrest them. "No longer able to continue the fight, suicide becomes more and more fascinating. It seems to be the last moral effort of autonomous humans. To end voluntary is like coming home to oneself... " Jaspers wrote in those dark days. "The rule of the apparatus favors humans, who live contemplativelessly without any leisure , bedeviled sleeplessly by their wishes of climbing up the social ladders. It is required to be skilful, slippery, oily. You have to become beloved, you must ingratiate on everyone with a clever fuss of persuading and captivating, you have to become zealous, indispensable, you have to be silent, insidious, you have to present a modest gesture, you have to work only to please your chief, you never are allowed to show any independence against a superior ...". Jaspers analyzed the Hitler-Germany and Martin Heidegger, the post war German society and "The Question of German Guilt" - but in the center he defined how to live with dignity - in any time...

Inspirational.......2005-01-22
I have read every work of the late Karl Jaspers. I believe Ms. Kirkbright summarizes her approach in her introduction. She chooses a difficult path to explore. She must write about Jasper's life without focusing on his specific philosophy. She explains in the introduction that she will write about Jaspers seeking truth without going into detail about his idea of truth. Personally I can not put the book down, but I keep reading and reading. Too many academic snobs keep trying to kill the spirit of philosophy. Why is it wrong to look at Karl Jaspers through the lens of his family correspondence? I recommend this book to anyone who is interesting in learning about the man who wrote so much philosophy and began the long tradition known as existentialism. I do not recommend this book to anyone who is too pretentious to actually read a book!
A Flawed Biography.......2004-11-27
In general, I do not like to post negative reviews to the Amazon Web site. For Suzanne Kirkbright's work, I am making an exception. This is a very poorly written and narrated biography. Very briefly, I would like to itemize its most obvious flaws,
1. Writing. Ms Kirkbright writes in an English that is all but incomprehensible. The book reads like an inept translation. Here are the first two sentences of the book:
"In Oldenburg, where Karl Jaspers was born on 23 February 1883, the changing attitudes that shape the fabric of civilized society were all but sheltered from view. (footnote 1) During these years of Bismark's Germany, political life was in flux, for modernizing the regions in a federal, secular and unified nation appeared to exacerbate disagreement among political parties which--apart from the higher authority of Emperor Willhelm I--could have been scrutinizing Bismarck's policies of social and cultural integration. (footnote 2)"
Throughtout her book, Ms Kirkbright has trouble with standard English idioms and the use of prepositions. One has to wonder how this prose slipped passed the editorial staff at YUP.
2. Historical. Ms Kirkbright's rendering of the historical and cultural background of Jasper's place and time is substandard.
3. Narrative. This biography achieves no smooth narrative but skips around and does not build any kind of systematic portrait of anything--not the family, not Karl, not the political events.
4. Ideas. Mr Kirkbright seems to have little understanding of the ideas that circulate in Jaspers work. She seems to be culling them from secondary sources rather than from her own reading and understanding.
5. Research. Ms Kirkbright is working on a fascinating subject with many primary sources. However, she uses these sources in a very unskilled way. She has the tendency to footnote sentence after sentence, often with no serious goal.
6. Bibliographical. Her reference section is not up to contemporary scholarly standards. One rather humorous example is her reference to "The Complete Works of Plato"...in the Jowett translation. Hmmm...?
In conclusion, because of its awkwardness this book is hard to follow for a someone who simply wants to know a bit about Jaspers; for the scholar, it's probably worth a quick glance because of the value of Suzanne Kirkbright's source material.
All in all, this is a poor book that needs revision
