How to Know the Lichens (Pictured Key Nature Series)
ASIN: 0870814907 |
Book Description
A Rocky Mountain Lichen Primer is an introduction and field guide to lichens in the Rocky Mountain region. It features seventy-two color plates picturing the most common and conspicuous species to be found in the mountains and foothills of the Rockies. Many of these lichens are also common in other geographic areas, giving the book a broader utility for those interested in lichens elsewhere. In addition to the plates, A Rocky Mountain Lichen Primer contains a brief description of each species to assist in identification, along with a general introduction to lichens and their structure. The book is tailored to the novice, and includes a section on beginning a lichen collection.

Looks like a Junior High School science project.......2003-05-29
This book appears to have been slapped together with less than two weeks of work. I was constantly confused by discrepancies between the descriptions and the photographs. Lichens described as bright green, chartreuse, orange, red, etc., were all about the same dull shade of gray-brown in the pictures. This may be due to poor photography, poor reproduction, or the fact that the lichens pictured are old dessicated herbarium specimens rather than living lichens in their natural setting.
a handy backpack reference.......2000-02-24
This little book of pretty pictures of lichens is slightly larger than a Reader's Digest but not quite as thick, so it will fit into your backback but not into your pocket. It tells you what you want to know without getting too botanical and will add greatly to what you will see on your next hike, and the one after that, and the one after that, and the one after ----

Customer Reviews:
Not enough pictures about goldfish diseases.......2004-12-16
This book's just too general. The contents are just too basic. It doesn't contain too much info about goldfish diseases. I think the book contains info about general freshwater fishes rather than goldfishes. Also there're only a few pictures that shown the goldfish diseases. Some diseases written in the book don't even have pictures. I will say it's a book for a real beginner (knows nothing about freshwater fishes) rather than goldfish lovers.
This is the BEST Goldfish Book EVER!!!.......2002-11-13
If you want a Happy and Healthy Goldfish, BUY THIS BOOK. I've owned this book for a year and a half and I Love it to this day!!! This book is filled with Beautiful Color pictures, easy to understand concepts, and all the information you could ever want on Goldfish. This book has made me so knowledgeable that my friends call me "the Goldfish doctor".
Excellent, but not totally current.......2002-08-01
Aquarium technology has advanced quite a bit since this book was first written, so that portion of the book is only of limited use. However, the information on care and feeding of one's goldfish is excellent. Nonetheless, if you are going to get just one book on goldfish, I recommend The Essential Goldfish, by Maddy Hargrove, which is an updated version of this book..
Good first book.......2002-07-05
I just set up a small outdoor pond and was not really interested in Koi because of the cost and the fact that they can get big so goldfish seemed the logical choice.
Other than having one in a bowl when I was a kid, I didn't know anything about them. Now I know I will never put one in a bowl again and have learned all kinds of interesting things about these fascinating creatures. I am sure there are other books that may go into more detail on some topics but this book seems to cover just about everything. I don't think you will be disappointed. Clear, easy to read and understand. Good photos but I wish there were more - can't please everyone.
A good, informative book.......2002-05-08
This book has helped me gain an understanding of goldfish and how to take care of them. Written by Carlo DeVito with Gregory Skomal, it was released in 1996. The 156 pages consist of five chapters. The color photographs of the varieties of goldfish are nice. Several drawings are also included--one of these is a color drawing of a goldfish with its external features pointed out. Handy sidebars are interspersed throughout. Examples of topics discussed are the history of goldfish, the body and its structure, the senses, selecting goldfish, varieties, setup of the aquarium, plants, feeding, aquarium maintenance, breeding, diseases, and pondkeeping. There is an appendix, which is composed of an alphabetical listing of 80 well-known varieties of goldfish, and a bibliography. I find this to be a pleasing, useful publication and recommend it.

Book Description
Presenting 60 quilt block designs that combine to make five distinctive quilts, this collection features techniques for various skill levels, a progressive approach that moves from easy to more complicated blocks, quiltmaking basics, a broad range of quilt designs that varies from casual to formal, and different quilt-making styles.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of great quilt blocks presented very well........2007-01-20
If you are a fan of antique quilts, country quilts, or Thimbleberries quilts, this book is for you, unless you already own the first five Thimbleberries block of the month series. For everyone else, this beautiful book is a superb collection of five quilts, containing 60 different blocks.
And it is a beautiful book. I have many quilt books - I wish they were all designed so well. The quilts, blocks, and instructions are laid out with clarity and simplicity. Images, both photos and diagrams, are large and uncluttered.
Each quilt is shown in a lovely country setting with an interesting description of the quilt and the blocks. Many quilt books stop there, but this book also includes a photograph of the entire quilt and a large photo of each quilt block. The fabric list also shows a photo of each suggested fabric. I love the photos.
The directions for each block are illustrated with handy diagrams that show block construction.
The quilts were designed to be non-intimidating, completed a block per month. And the quilt blocks get more complex further into the book. They serve as a fine quilting course, with a little help from a how to quilt book. There are quilt directions included, but a complete beginner may need more help.
The first quilt is called "Month by Month." Each block represents a different month of the year. I think a pillow made from the block for their birth month would be a thoughtful gift for just about anyone. The blocks would also be nice as slipcovers for living room throw pillows to change out each month or season.
Me, I like villages. I collect them, and fill my knick-knack shelves with little houses. The second quilt, "Thimbleberries Village," is perfect for me. With blocks like "Main Street Manor," and "Log Cabin Lane," that I can cap off with "Sunlight" and "Apple Orchard," how can I resist?
I have several friends and relatives who feed the birds (and squirrels) year-round. The third quilt, "Safe Haven," is full of birdhouses in a vertical style.
Next, you can stitch pieced blocks of tulips, bleeding heart, lilies, and daisies in the fourth quilt, "A Quilter's Garden." It's remarkable how these five quilts are so alike in style but differ in execution and design. The garden quilt is set on point, the birdhouse quilt blocks are vertical blocks, while the village quilt has an asymmetrical layout.
"Pansy Park," the fifth quilt, has blocks on point in a dramatic setting. The description calls it an important quilt and an heirloom quilt. The formal layout and lavish borders suit it very well.
For traditional-style quilters, this book deserves a place in your library. I enjoyed it thoroughly - great quilts presented very well.
A compendium of 60 of the most beloved and popular block quilt designs.......2006-02-10
Thimbleberries Big Book Of Quilt Blocks is a compendium of 60 of the most beloved and popular block quilt designs, each created for a different quilt-making style. The author, Lynette Jensen, is the founder of Thimbleberries Design Studio, which has brought about more than 850 Thimbleberries Quilt Clubs devoted to her original designs. Featuring color combinations that herald classic quilts, a range of projects from casual to formal, and streamlined techniques such as rotary-cutting and quick-piecing that save time while producing quality results, Thimbleberries Big Book Of Quilt Blocks is a collection of patterns, color diagrams and straightforward piecing instructions ideal for intermediate to experienced quilters.
Wonderful collection of some of the best patterns!.......2006-02-01
This book is a wonderful collection of some of Thimbleberries best patterns. The cutting instructions and assembly instructions are also very good.
Its value depends on what you're looking for.......2005-11-18
This book is a hard one to evaluate. If you're interested in a certain kind of quilting, it's a 5-star book without question. If you're looking for something different, it's somewhat disappointing.
Thimbleberries Big Book of Quilt Blocks shows you, step-by-step, how to make five quilts. They're all full size quilts: 62x78 inches, 88x96, 81x98, 92x112. However, they are all also *sampler* quilts; that is, you make 12 (or whatever) different blocks, using the same fabrics for each block, and then you sew them together into a larger quilt top. For example, the first quilt encourages you to make one quilt block for each month (which implies "make one each month," even though you could make 'em in one busy week I suppose).
The book does an excellent job of explaining the fabrics to use, and how much you'll need for the entire quilt. The "Pansy Park" quilt, for example, uses 1 1/8 yard of a small green leaf print for the whole quilt; that green is an accent in each of the blocks. (The quilt uses 18 other fabrics as well; plan to spend some time at the fabric store!) If you like to make a quilt that matches the picture, you'll appreciate how he book doesn't just say "small green leaf print;" it shows you a thumbnail image of the fabric. You can acquire a matching one (you can buy the Thimbleberries fabric, which is designed for RJR Fabrics) or pick something similar from your nearby quilting store.
Another thing I appreciate about the book is the thoroughness of the instructions. The construction of each block -- and there are LOTS of pretty blocks! -- is explained in detail. Each block is approached as a standalone project (including "at this point, the block should measure 14.5 inches square"), making it a good choice for those with limited time to work on a quilt. You _could_ get lost, but you'd have to work pretty hard to do so.
There are two downsides that keep me from loving this book. First is that it's all sampler quilts. I'm just not that fond of them, because it means a new setup for each block, and I don't personally care for the style. Of course, there's nothing to keep me from making an entire quilt using just one or two of the blocks they suggest (some of them are really gorgeous and the instructions are not intimidating, even for this "practicing beginner"), but I'd have to guess at the amount of fabric needed. I don't trust my math that much yet!
My second objection is to the fabric choices. All of the examples are in a very "country" style: little flowers on fabrics that, though not exactly calico, make me think of calico. They're mostly small-scale prints, too, with few designs suited for the big focus fabrics I prefer. ("Where can I fit that great purple bird fabric in THIS quilt?" I wonder.) And while there's a range of values, they aren't particularly bright. Obviously, I can pick my own colors... but the designs have lots of small squares and triangles. Few of them would work with my stash.
However, the last few paragraphs are entirely personal to my needs. Your idea of a great quilt is likely to be far different from mine. (Heck, I'm still proud of myself if my points line up right.) I don't expect you to agree with my taste. All I can do is give you my own look inside the book, and hope that its description is helpful.
If you like country sampler quilts, this book will be exactly what you'd hoped for -- it's a very well designed book, and probably a great one for someone who wants to try lots of different things.
Wonderful Buy and Gorgeous Book.......2005-11-08
I have been very pleased with my first time order thru Amazon books.
Such quick service. My books were delivered less than 5 days and one was here in 3 days ! This is a really nice book. Lots of good color pictures and step by step instructions. Thimbleberries always have such pretty quilt blocks. I'm hoping they will do this again with more BOM blocks/quilts in the future. Thanks again, Amazon staff.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for graduate coursework.......2007-05-15
This book was part of my graduate course on Managing Diversity & Conflict. I will not be selling this book as it is a keeper and well worth the read.
Excellent layout and easy to follow........2007-01-16
This book was for a class, but I recommend it for anyone who is having difficulty communicating with someone in their life.
Beyond the 8th Step.......2004-10-07
As a mediator, I enjoyed reading the application of the 8 steps as they apply to many types of relationships. I especially appreciated the Appendix "Frequent Problem Areas" addressing the "yes, but what if this happens", e.g., anger, stubborness on one side, resistance, etc. This book is for the more evolved who are open to peacemaking and ready to move beyond impasse in their conflicts.
Essential Life Skills Reference Book.......2001-03-24
This book teaches the reader a process towards better conflict management. It is not a hard process to learn; its not an easy process to use all the time, though. That being said, I recommend this book HIGHLY, especially to anyone who is looking for ways to make their home life, work life, or community life more enriching.
Dudley was a professor of mine in undergraduate. He's a great man, and this is a *great* book.
When you're ready for peace.......2000-08-16
When you're waaay past "Looking out for #1" or "Winning Through Intimidation," when you're more than a few miles down the road from "Getting to Yes," when strengthening and developing all of your relationships has become far more important to you than "winning" or getting your way or creatively persuading the other person to do your bidding....then perhaps you're ready for this book. That's right, when you're ready for peace, even if you're the one who'se going to have to change, here's a framework, a process. But not until you're ready.

Book Description
The personality of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)-a 19th-century combination of dropout, rebel, and genius-and the source of his enormous achievement continue to fascinate people as deeply as his vivid, wildly painted canvasses of sunflowers, peasants, and starry nights. In this first and only in-depth study of the relationship between van Gogh's psychological development and his art, Albert J. Lubin, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (Emeritus) at Stanford University and a practicing psychoanalyst, draws on the tremendous wealth of information available about van Gogh, to explore his personal conflicts in the context of the forces that molded him: familial, historical, cultural, religious, artistic, and literary. Dr. Lubin approaches van Gogh not as a mysterious mix of sick eccentric and martyred artist, but as a complete man who transformed his suffering into a phenomenal body of work. Lubin's daring psychological insights and art criticism allow us to better understand, and more fully appreciate, van Gogh's artistic triumph over his inner torment.
Customer Reviews:
A Gigglefest of Freudian Fallacies.......2004-06-11
Pure, unintentional, Freudian-style hilarity! This book is what happens when modern psychology ignores modern neuropathy. I was laughing until tears streamed down my face when I read the passage that states that Vincent's early work, (i.e. the Potato Eaters) was his superego rebelling against his mother's "Dutch cleanliness" and her refusal to allow the infant Vincent to smear feces on the walls of his nursery which then affected his pallete choice as an adult. Brown, yep. OK, I'm about to start laughing again . . . (whew!)
Vincent van Gogh was extraordinarily adept at introspection, and through reading his body of correspondence a student of psychology may glean an idea of van Gogh's state of agitation and alienation, and I recommend that a van Gogh scholar, or anyone with a genuine desire to better understand and empathize with van Gogh, read his correspondence instead of this book.
This book fails to lend any original - or even modern - insights, it is entirely too subjective, mired in neo-Freudian and occasionally, Jungian, conjecture, it lacks Gestalt, and works to distort and narrow the reader's perception of Vincent's gift as it related to his sustained neuropsychiatric state.
But, if you want to laugh (and laugh and laugh and laugh) at one scholar's attempt at deconstructing art and epileptiform neurological affect via Freud's ridiculous personality-based suppositions, read this book.
Once past the first chapter, really great book!.......2002-05-10
I really liked the perspective of looking at Van Gogh from a psychological view point. However, the first chapter is very dense with names of paintings and their deeper meaning. The author does much better in the subsequent chapters trying to discover Vincent the man.
A must read for anyone trying to understand Van Gogh!
The Only Van Gogh Biography I Can Recommend.......2001-12-11
Many biographies and abbreviated collections of Vincent's volumnous and passionate letters to his brother Theo have been published in recent years. The only one that I can recommend though is "Stranger on the Earth : A Psychological Biography of Vincent Van Gogh" by Albert J. Lubin, which provides a fascinating insight into Vincent's life and work. The author examines Vincent's fragile personality with a sensible balance of clinical observation and human compassion. The title "stranger on earth" is an apt description of how Vincent apparently felt about his life. I read this book cover to cover in a few days (a page-turner) and came away with an appreciative sense of Van Gogh as a complex personality driven alternately by great passion and great depression. A tragic yet very human story.
Outstanding!.......2001-06-18
Unlike most any biography out there, this book yeilds new insights to the man and his art.
Elegant, honorable, beautiful.......1999-09-28
The elegance with which he, Stone, makes manifest the life of this magnificent artist is breathtaking at times. This is not just the work to which all biographical material on Van Gogh is measured, but one of the biographical novels by which all other biographies and biographical novels should be. It is imposiible to not get sucked into the narrative and feel what it was like to be in the company of men who are poised, with their gifts, to change the way we look at the world and ourselves. Nor is it possible to not come away sympathisizing, or even feeling a kinship with the deeply troubled genius whose art bares witness to the human soul. Dissapointing.......2007-06-11
While the book covers the general topic, I was disappointed that it lacked even mention of numerous more historically well know ship figureheads. Being a ship modeler the book appeared from the description that it would give a wider view of figurehead history, but is seemed a bit thin on content. Images were poor which is understandable in some cases due to their age, but the book did not live up to my expectations.

Each of these sections corresponds with a section of award-winning songs on the YOU COME TOO CD which is included with purchase of the book. Explore a new educational landscape where positive hip hop for kids paves the way for a visionary yet practical approach to helping kids learn and succeed. Book Description
Among the most popular and ubiquitous sculptures in nineteenth-century America were the ship's figurehead and the cigar-store Indian. The vast majority of these engaging human figures were created by shipcarvers-highly skilled artists celebrated for their masterful figureheads but who collectively made tens of thousands of shop figures as well, from fanciful representations of American Indians to firemen, baseball players, and fashionable women.
Shaped by nineteenth-century Anglo-American values, this artwork reflects the tenor of the times, including racial and gender stereotyping, America's emerging popular culture, and the birth of modern advertising techniques.
The Shipcarvers' Art is the first book to assess the artistry and history of these two closely related genres in a single volume. Richly illustrated and elegantly written, it reveals the intertwining of art, commerce, and shipcarving in nineteenth-century America. On March 22, 1856, for example, only four months after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Hiawatha was first published, the clipper Minehaha was launched at an East Boston shipyard. Its figurehead depicted a renowned English actress in her role as Hiawatha's wife, Minehaha. Central to the festivities surrounding the event were poet, actress, and shipbuilder--and a fictional image of the Native American.
Ralph Sessions not only highlights the work of shipcarvers throughout the eastern United States and Canada but also presents new information on carving workshops in New York City, America's key shipbuilding center from around 1820 until after the Civil War.
Just as they were vanishing from the bows of ships and city streets around the turn of the twentieth century, figureheads and shop figures began to experience renewed interest as museum pieces and collector's items. Representing a milestone in scholarship on the subject, The Shipcarvers' Art magnificently brings them alive once more for art lovers of the twenty-first century.

Welcome addition to the canon.......2005-04-22
I collect figures. I have read the books that are used for reference. I have seen the exhibit that was chaperoned by Mr. Sessions (Sandwich,MA., NYC,NY & Baltimore,MD). I am a student of the art he describes! I was impressed by his scholarship, his easy east coast art scene style of writing, his photography/graphics, his hommage to Ms. Sanburn, Mr. Pendergast & Mr. Fried (I knew him). This is not a picture atlas. This is not a coffee table book. I would have liked to seen/read more especially regarding the social relevance of color race &c.(the folly of the time theirs & ours) but this is another matter! I RECOMMEND this book to all who treasure american sculpture. The vulgar artist is finally getting his place(WELL DONE Mr Sessions! What is next?).

Book Description
Figureheads — those magnificent carvings that once adorned the prows of early sailing vessels — are the focus of this intriguing coloring book. Twenty-seven illustrations of these splendid embellishments depict the figure of a sailor ("Jolly Jack Tar"), the warrior chief "Tecumseh," Eurydice, a Scottish soldier of the Blackwatch regiment, and many others.
Book Description
This is the story of the carved wooden bow decorations that once, when sea traffic took place exclusively in wooden ships and under sail, adorned almost every stem. As a result of an inclusive international documentation project of the Deutschen Schiffahrtsmuseums, nautical historians Hans Jurgen Hansen and Clas Broder Hansen present this work. Some 100 illustrations show the variety of figurehead types.
Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures, little information.......2007-02-01
This small (i.e., thin) book was a bit disappointing. It does have some very nice photos, but I was disappointed in the lack of textual content. For some of the images there was little or no useful information. If you are just interested in seeing pictures of a variety of old figure heads the book is fine. As someone interested in the history of ship bow figures I found the limited amount of detailed content disappointing.

A Book Mostly of the Time of Sail.......2006-04-12
There was a time before ships became totally functional constructions of steel when individuality brought a soul to the vessel. And often at the bow of the ship was a bit of art that helped to define that soul.
This book is on the art and the history of figureheads and other carvings that decorated and personalized ships of the time. It is a magnificant set of photographs and descriptions that give the history of decorations applied to vessels of all kinds. It begins with drawings found of ships in times as far back as the fourth century BC and continues through the present as although the ships they graced are gone, their figureheads remain in museums, monuments in cemetaries, and otherwise preserved.
It's easy to imagine the sailing ships of yore with their figureheads as it is impossible to imagine one on the Jahre Viking, a 1,503 foot long oil tanker, or on the modern ships of the navies of the world.

Book Description
"When early seafarers first set sail...bold, larger-than-life symbolic images of power and defiance were mounted on the front of ships, in the hope that the `spirit of the ship' could vanquish evil and protect sailors from harm--thus the rich tradition of carving figureheads was born. Now...today's woodcarvers can recapture some of that old-time glory in 15 exciting projects....With full-color photos, plenty of practical advice and troubleshooting tips, and clear illustrations, even new carvers will be able to produce colorful, adventurous pieces."--Chip Chats. "A fun book to have in your library."--Carver's News.

carving figureheads & other nautical designs.......2002-09-07
I am quite torn on this book. It has some good ideas, and the project sections in the beginning of the book are very complete. However, the second half of the book is a different story. As you are rushed through the carvings, critical details and views are left out, some of the directions become unclear and confusing due to a poor flow in writing and bad use of verbiage, and the authors even contradict themselves on their woodcarving techniques. If you are a beginning woodcarver, be wary, you might end up a bit lost. Even though the book is a bit lacking, it may still be worth it as a reference book if you are interested in nautical carving.
