This is the autobiographical account of Bill Hickman, Chief of the Destroying Angels, Head Danite, etc. After Mr. Beadle began to examine the history of the Mormon church; and while all the Mormon people spoke of Bill Hickman as a desperately bad man, and guilty of untold murders, he was struck by two curious and then unexplainable facts. The first was that while everybody, from Brigham Young down, united in calling Hickman a murderer, and while evidence could easily be collected of several of his crimes, not a single attempt has been made by priest or people to bring him to justice. The second point is that long after Hickman was known as a murderer, he was successively promoted to a number of offices; he was Sheriff and Representative of one county, Assessor and Collector of Taxes, and Marshal; and during all this time he was on terms of personal intimacy with Brigham Young.

Basically simply the story of Bill Hickman in his own words. There is a preface from his lawyer J.H. Beadle which is quite insightful. The issue is, was Mr. Hickman truthful in his account. I would recommend reading a companion book like Hiltons "Wild Bill" Hickman and the Mormon Frontier. It is good to get someone elses views based on their research. I am really glad to have been able to get a copy of this mans most important history in print. It is really a good read. I highly recommend it.

Living the real wild west.......2003-09-19

I really enjoyed reading this book though I did read it with a little grain of salt added. Seeing how Hickman wrote it himself I'm sure the truth and fact was sprinkled with a little sugar.

I was glad Beale didn't do much editing and left the manuscript mostly as Hickman wrote it. I could almost hear the screaming indians, hear the cries of wounded men, hear the horses being lead out of the coral...by thives. I could see the murdered men fall from the saddle, watch the hangings and sit in court watching justice....sort of being served.

If you enjoy non fiction western then this is the book to read, providing you can read a little between the lines.

There's no doubt living in those days of the untamed west was trying and difficult, all of the settlers and emigrants had to be a very tough and hardy bunch.

Great for beginner dog owners.......2003-03-26

This book is well indexed, as it may be easily read from cover to cover, or it may also be used strictly by section, allowing for quick and easy reference.
While the beginning portion gives great detailed physical description as well as AKA standards, I have found the vast majority of the book to provide very general information that can apply to just about any dog. While I have adopted an adult, most of the book talks to the prospective puppy owner/trainer. Thererfore, I do not feel that it addresses breed-specific problems that may exist in adult dogs adopted from unknown previous owners.

I read several other books on the breed in an effort to understand my dog, but nothing came close to explaining to me her weird personality quirks and why she has them. Then I read THIS book and I swear the light was shining and the angels were singing. Nina Ross and Pat Craige Trotter, from whom I actually got my dog, explain the elkhound in clear, exact detail. No other book can explain this wonderful, ancient breed like this one does. Now that I can "speak" Elkhound, I couldn't imagine ever having another breed!

I bought this for a pottery student of mine after she bought the teapot book. Both are great fodder for the potter's imagination, and for me, a wonderful set of examples that get me away from the idea that my own pottery has to be as "perfect" as a wedgwood teacup. The pitcher book will be the next to grace the shelves of my studio library.

We just opened the pottery area of our store this year. The learning curve is steep: setting up the studio, hiring teachers, choosing clay bodies and glazes, and wheels, repairing kilns and firing other peoples work! So, I have purchased a lot of pottery books recently! This one is very cool. It doesn't teach you how to make anything, but it is a great way to see a huge variety of possibilites. I just love looking through it. There are several cups in there that I want to try to build (when I get better skills). The Lark Ceramics books are excellent resource books-stock your library up with them. You won't be sorry.

I love this book! I found it at the library, and now I have to buy my own copy. It's got a variety of ideas for everyone- for example, for Winter Holidays- traditions for a Solstice Celebration, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa. And ideas for all ages from toddler/preschool age to graduation. And, most importantly, it explains why rituals are important in building a strong family- what the elements of a successful family tradtion are, and how you can create your own.

This book is exactly what you'd expect from a book purchased at a gift shop at the Grand Canyon, bland.

It is by no-means in-depth and spends more time describing the antiques that Colter decorated her buildings with than with her life. Colter was a fascinating woman and I would have liked to learn more about her than this book provided.

Being as how Colter isn't exactly someone you're likely to read more than one book about, I would recommend purchasing something with more pictures and information than this one, which is more just a basic outline.

fills an important gap.......2001-04-07

Although I agree with the reviewer who says that Mary Colter deserves a far better book, I still highly recommend this one, as at least it fills in a gap that's almost the same size as the canyon where Colter's buildings still stand today. More people should read it so that some will be inspired to write more!

Mary Colter facinating but often overlooked architect........1998-08-02

"Builder upon the Red Earth" is not the slick tome of expensive color photographs and analytical drawings that Mary Colter's unique contribution to Twentieth Century American Architecture deserves. However, this essentially biographical book is the only one in print showing pictures and telling the history of Mary Colters extrodinary talent.It is not clear if Mary Colter's obscurity is due to the fact that she was a woman practicing architecture in a time when the field was dominated by men or if the remote Southwestern locations of her most interesting works kept them hidden form view, but it is high time more people took a serious look at her work. Colter's projects, which are "built ruins" foreshadow the work of Western deconstructionist architects like Antoine Predoc or Tom Maine. Showing the work of Colter which is almost 80 years ahead of its time "Builder upon the Red Earth" should be in every young architects library.
