                    5 out of 5 stars Loving Scotland!.......2002-06-10

Having just returned from my 2nd trip to Scotland, and this time touring the Highlands, this book was by far the most complete and comprehensive of any guide book I used. It gave phone numbers, things not to miss, and even included info on "things to do on Skye when it rains" (which it did almost daily). I appreciated the maps and the little historical notes they wrote. I would recommend this book to anyone going to The Highlands for their first - or tenth - time. The only other thing you will need is an English - Gaelic dictionary.

                                          Book Description

Mutt Matters is a book with insight and experience from someone who has trained dogs and helped others do so over the last twelve-plus years. All the common problems such as crate training or house breaking, barking, chewing, etc., are covered in the book. Also discussed is an area that many books or trainers do not like to handle, and that is aggression. Having specialized in law enforcement canine training for the last eight years, Aaron Ziegler is more than familiar with how canine aggression comes to surface and how and where it lies within the dog's natural instincts. As a trainer, he uses these natural instincts to mold dogs into partners law enforcement canine handlers can trust. By molding the dogs' prey, defense and fight drives, the dogs learn to apprehend criminals. These same drives are in all dogs, and sometimes the unsuspecting owner does something to either cross that line or unknowingly violates the rules.

                                          Book Description

For anyone who feels she can never have too many handbags, this book is for you. Crafters, sewers, and lovers of handbags and leather goods are invited to take a one-on-one course in handbag and accessory construction and design with this new title.

Written by three accomplished professors from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City, this book takes a fun approach to fashionable designs that are not only beautiful but also simple to create.

Learn to construct fabulous handbags as well as other related accessories including cell phone cases, eyeglass cases, a belt and belt bag, wallets, an agenda book cover, and a cosmetic case. All projects are made from garment weight leathers and can be created on a typical home sewing machine.

Numerous photos, step-by-step illustrations, and, best of all, insider's tips for constructing these pieces and customizing the patterns to your own personal style are included.

I'm disappointed in this book. The patterns supplied are much smaller than you would expect, making their appeal limited. Only half of the projects are actual handbags. All the projects use very lightweight garment leathers, which lack the structure a good bag needs. The instructions are okay, and the illustrations are generally helpful. The gallery section is just terrible; the examples shown are reminiscent of summer camp or slumber party projects in my opinion. It seems to be intended for cloth sewing hobbyists looking to make something simple in leather. Not for the serious leatherworkers. In all, I do not recommend this book, and would have returned it if the combined shipping costs would not have cost more than the book itself.

5 out of 5 stars FIT does another great job........2006-02-21

This book is essentially a guide to a student show but includes all of the patterns and contstruction techniques to make the items featured. Excellent instructions plus guidance on choosing suitable materials and where and how to obtain them. Includes all the patterns on tear out pages so that you can take them to the copier to enlarge them to the exact size of the samples. It even includes e-mail addresses for the people whose work is featured. Truly an excellent additon to the library of the aspiring handbag artist.

5 out of 5 stars Do things with your home sewing machine you never thought you could!.......2005-12-11

I own several books on making handbags, and this is hands down my favorite. Instead of using the book for its step by step patterns, I've used it as a resource book on how to create things with alternative materials. I've applied the techniques contained in this book to many alternative materials such as naugahide (sp?) and vinyl. What I really appreciated was the breakdown so the projects can be done on home sewing machines instead of by hand or with industrial machines. All of my bags are made from recycled materials and owning this reference has really helped me bring my work up to a whole new level. The project gallery at the end of the book is just as inspirational as the projects themselves. Enjoy!

                                          5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!!!!.......2005-08-25

This is a wonderful book. It is great for novice handbag designers to use as a learning tool...It's also great for expert designers to use for great inspiration. I would recommend it to anyone who loves handbags!

                                          Book Description

As readers and critics around the country agree, any new book by the renowned garden writer Elizabeth Lawrence is like finding a buried treasure. A Rock Garden in the South will not disappoint. Released posthumously, this book is not only a welcome addition to the Lawrence canon, but fills an important gap in the garden literature on the middle South.
Lawrence, in her usual exquisite prose, deals with the full range of rock gardening topics in this work. She addresses the unique problem of cultivating rock gardens in the South, where the growing season is prolonged and humidity and heat are not conducive to such planting. She describes her own experiences in making a rock garden, with excellent advice on placing stones, constructing steps, ordering plants, and making cuttings.
At the same time, what she writes about here is in large part of interest to gardeners everywhere and for gardens with or without rocks. As always, she thoroughly discusses the plants she has tried—recommending bulbs and other perennials of all sorts, annuals, and woody plants—with poetic descriptions of the plants themselves as well as specific and useful cultural advice. A Rock Garden in the South includes an encyclopedia of plants alphabetized by genus and species and divided into two parts: wood and non-woody plants.

In "A Rock Garden in the South" Ms. Lawrence returns to her greatest strength. I don't think anyone has ever understood rock gardens as well as Ms. Lawrence. And if you're concerned about water scarcity and drought, knowing about rock gardening is quite pragmatic.

Although the book was written some time ago, and released after her death, it was edited by Nancy Goodwin and Allen Lacy, so the contents are solid and up to date. The contents read somewhat like an annotated plant list, but Ms. Lawrence writes beautiful prose so it's not at all dry and boring. In fact, her writing is useful and entertaining.

Ms. Lawrence believed you could make a rock garden almost anywhere--even if you didn't have rocks. The key is to plant things that will grow in your area. Most of her writing in this book is useful for the middle South -- Zones 6-8 -- but if you look at a garden book showing the USDA growing zones you'll see they extend clear across the country.

The book contains a great deal of information about plants and their likes and dislikes. There are no photographs, this is solid text, however, if I want to know what something looks like I find a catalog from Wayside Gardens and poke around. Some of the more esoteric items may not be pictured in any garden catalog with photos, but sometimes it's worth the gamble to just try something on faith.

Several pages showing plant requirements (will it work in dry shade?), as well as sources for seed exchanges and nurseries are located in the back of the book.

I was given a copy of this book after attending a 20+ week parenting program that was designed and overseen by Dr. Webster-Stratton. The advice in the book is taken directly from program. At the time, my son was a very challenging, out-of-control six years old.

The information contained in the book proved to be invaluable in turning around my son's behavior and also in building positive interaction between us.

                                            I highly recommend this book.

As a psychologist currently in training at a Family Therapy agency, I have found this book invaluable for its clarity and accessibility. Its presentation is simple and pleasing (there are fun illustrations too!) but never simplistic. In addition, I know that everything the author recommends and explains has been scientifically and rigorously tested over many years on large groups of children. The book is divided into 3 parts you can dip into separately. Both the index and the table of contents are excellent, so you can easily and quickly consult it as needed. Its first part explains effective and efficient parenting techniques and their rationales. The second part focuses on how parents can deal with some of their own troubling feelings and behaviors related to parenting issues. The third part outlines coping techniques for 13 common behavior problems. The advice is thus easy to retrieve, and the author does a good job avoiding jargon and sticking to everyday language. In sum, an instructive and fun book that has been eminently useful for the parents I have worked with.

                                              Book Description

Lisa Germany's biography of Harwell Hamilton Harris (1903-1990) details the work of an architect who successfully merged the ideals of modern and California regionalist architecture. Harris was a sculptor who changed careers when he saw Wright's Hollyhock House and realized that an architect could make sculpture on a monumental scale that both functioned as a home and moved in and out of nature. Germany traces the development of Harris's life and career, assessing his place in American modernism, in the development of regionalist architecture, and in the interpretation of a modern California lifestyle that would gain admirers throughout the world. Her discussion opens a window into the complexities of modernism in America during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.
