From San Diego’s Whaley House to Sonoma’s Valley of the Moon Saloon, California offers an amazing array of haunted sites. Enriched with historical background and generously illustrated, this fascinating, fun-to-read guide documents dozens of chill-inducing spots throughout the state, including hotels, bars, schools, historic buildings, and natural areas. Among the intriguing sites listed are the famous Winchester Mystery House, the infamous Red, White, and Blue Beach, and a host of lesser-known gems like the Easkoot House in Stinson Beach.

4 out of 5 stars A little light on info, but a fun read.......2006-12-21

I wasn't expecting a research manual, but it could have been a bit more detailed about the haunted locations. That gripe aside, it is a fun read for anyone including those with a passing interest in the paranormal.

    5 out of 5 stars It's almost like a field guide!.......2004-04-12

Since I live in the bay area, I'm pretty close to most of the places talked about in the book. It's a pretty fun weekend activity; my friends and I make a mini road trip of it. I've been to the majority of the places listed, and I have to admit that there have been a few times where I've had the ba-jezus scared out of me. Plus, it's a good way to connect with the state history. Unfortuatly, this book is definatly a lot more interesting to someone who lives in California or is planning on visiting. Otherwise, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves anything supernatural.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of FUN for Californians!.......2000-11-02

I collect books on hauntings, and a major problem I often find is that the telling of the "incident" or "occurence" can be either dry or so wordy you are bored to tears. This is not a problem with this book. The author attempts the bring the location alive with history and accounts of what (may have) taken place to cause the phenomena. However, it's greatest asset is also it's greatest flaw. As others have stated, some "ghost" stories have very little documentation of the actual hauntings, which is disappointing. Personally, I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it, especially if you are from Califonia. I used it to plan "haunted tours" with friends, and it provides information about each location (address, ph#, when and if it's open to the public) for those who want to experience it themselves. If you know the area(s), familiarity adds to the fun. If you are looking for an in depth study, I wouldn't say this book is for you. It's a fun, spooky, simple read, not an in depth study. But overall, I think people have been too hard on it, I've owned my copy since 1993, and reread it many times. It's pretty much what it claims to be. And really it's the only book I have read so far that is focused exclusively on (the entire) state of California.

2 out of 5 stars Lacks any real depth.......2000-09-10

This book was a dissapointment, but I love the subject of haunted houses, so I keep it around. Antoinette May concentrated more on the history of the actual buildings than on the hauntings themselves, and in one case (a story about Hollywood actress Thelma Todd) she treats the story like a who-done-it rather than account for any haunting. She goes on for six and a half pages about who killed Thelma Todd, and finishes up with ONE PARAGRAPH about building workers who say they've seen a ghost.

The story of the Red, White, and Blue beach is the only readable story in the book, and is the ONLY reason I give this book 2 stars, but even that could have backed with research or better pictures or SOMETHING, ANYTHING. The story was chilling, all the details the physics were picking up, and the fear they all felt, but again, I was left dissapointed with the story overall.

This is a light read, and if you have nothing better to do, and are in some tourist information about California, then by all means pick it up. If you are looking for depth and insight into hauntings and haunted houses, I suggest you look elseware.

4 out of 5 stars Expansive, if not a bit lacking in depth.......2000-08-13

While I do, to a degree agree with those who disliked this book, I find that for it's breadth of haunted locales in the Bay Area and California, it cannot be beat. It covers so many locations that it would be hard to cover with more depth. Also, the book focuses more on the HISTORY of the sites then the hauntings themselves. However, the story of Red, White and Blue beach made me have to visit!

A woman was recently found dead in her home after publishing tell-all accounts of life inside the mob. One might wonder if Fopiano has been running for cover himself.

This book would make an interesting and complementary addition to a collection including such books as Black Mass by O'Neill and Lehr. It discusses New England organized crime in particular and even touches on inside knowledge of the JFK assassination.

It is an o.k. but more valuable for its local historical flavor, even though some of the organized crime tapestry is not entirely accurate.

3 out of 5 stars One of the better TFH publications.......2005-03-02

One of the better TFH books, this one has actually been updated and has photos in it that don't look like they were taken in 1975! It's a small book that tries to cover basic care, breeding and common problems of quite a few of the more common species of captive kept reptiles, which means it can't get too in-depth on any one in particular.

This would be a good book for someone to read BEFORE they purchase a reptile, it would help them decide (based on the descriptions of the lizards and the type of care and housing they require) which type was right for them.

The one thing that really bugs me about TFH publications is that they of course use every book as an advertising opportunity to promote their own products, which usually aren't worth diddly compared to other brands. Sure, the price is cheap.. and it really shows in the quality of their products (including most of their books).

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ms Olson has made a quilt admirer out of me.......2007-08-29

I'll just say it. I always thought quilting was a LOT of work for something that was pretty ho-hum when you finished. But this book is simply dazzling in the approach to quilting. Her works are innovative and beautifully executed, and her methods are clearly explained. I bought the book Art Quilts a Celebration (might have the title slightly off - but it is a collection of hundreds of art quilts from the 80's to present day. PBS offered it as a "thank you" in a membership drive) THIS book was far more inspiring to me. I am now ready to dip into the world of quilts, and I believe I'm going to love it, thanks to Ms. Olson.

4 out of 5 stars Colour explosion plus black and white.......2007-08-23

This book is really two books. First Barbara gives a history
of her journey into quilting, leading up to the moment she
found her own inimitable style. That is interesting, but of course
you are only going to read it once. The second, and major, part
of the book is a detailed look at the design and construction of
her particular flamboyant quilts. She uses a mass of colourful
petal or wave like pieces to make an abstract but organic shape.
Then she adds geometric elements in black and white, like checks
or spirals. The effect is an explosion of energy. Not for every
              home!

There are details of the construction, using drawings on freezer
paper or Totally Stable, and then templates. She illustrates in
meticulous detail how to construct both geometric and organic
spirals. It's unlikely that anyone would try to imitate her quilts
as they look like a life's worth of work in each. The quilting
itself is amazing, and I should think she must have access to a lot
of batiks and jewel shades of fabric. I don't know why, but the
images in her quilts say 'acid trip', 'Woodstock' and similar!

It's a very clearly laid out book, with a lot of excellent colour
              photos.

              5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-02-15

She does a great job of showing and explaining things for those of us wanting to express ourselves in an artistic way with fabric. Go for it and try some new things.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning fabric art.......2007-02-03

In trying to separate a rating for the book itself as opposed to the content/context of it, initially I can say this book is not really a how-to as much as a "how I discovered the artist within." Except, of course, for the brilliant description of the angled spirals that so often find their way to Barbara Olson's quilts. That said, there is good information on construction here but it is not for the beginner or the faint of heart. The book is more an example of what's ultimately possible when we quit hampering our creative muse and give full rein to the medium in which we work.

Olson's quilted art is not the homely homespun blanket you'd cuddle under by a fire. These pieces are a fire unto themselves. The book is worth owning just to have a glimpse of her work. As a beginning quilter, the photos and close up construction information stir my own creative needs to aspire to step outsite the box. (Also makes me long for a high-tech quilting machine, but that's another story.)

5 out of 5 stars Book showcases Unbelieveable talent and creativity.......2007-01-22

The book starts at the beginning, and you can travel with Barbara as she discovers and develops her own inner creativity and as a busy and practical Mom with several kids, made a great studio in her home, and shows how she turned Art Quilts into a self-sustaining career.
It lightly brushes over how she also uses it in some Interior Designs for her husband's Architectural firm (but alas, no pictures...), which I wish she elaborated on a bit more.[I would love to see how she incorporates her bold style of Textile Arts into homes and offices- but maybe that is being saved for another book?]
Art Quilting has brought out the creative side of herself and has totally changed her life around. She shows you how she did it, and almost step-by-step (short of smokin' a lot of weed-LOL) how artistic exercises, certain tapes and books helped develop her abilities from ho-hum to WOW! with extremely original and bold creative work. There are also a lot of advanced quilting techniques that are not covered anywhere else, such as multi-colored spirals.
For anyone getting into the Textile Arts, the book is worth buying just for the excellent creativity exercises. It is truly inspiring!

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Primer in Creating Topiary.......2000-05-20

This book rates five stars for its thorough and visually appealing discussion of how to create topiary. I was so thrilled when I received it - it was exactly what I wanted. Not only does it cover the different shapes of topiary, but an excellent discussion of the various plants that may be used, their pluses and minuses, the tools to use, techniques - just everything you would need to know.

The book also includes a great review of the historical uses of topiary in different periods and countries. Best of all, there are fabulous color pictures of topiary gardens and the different topiary types. After reading and consulting this book, I feel certain I can tackle some topiary projects. In case you couldn't tell, I love this book.

1 out of 5 stars This book was of no use to us.......2007-02-01

We made the changes that were suggested, but found no effect on our child's behavior (which is only mildly hyperactive).

It appears some people have success with this, and that's great. Note however: it is VERY difficult to follow this diet in a family where only one child might need it.

Personally, I believe that following your kid around and critiquing every morsel of food that goes into his mouth, drives everyone crazy.

It may have been written 25 years ago but my son was a totally different child within a week of following the Feingold Diet! It's been weeks now and even he is willing to follow the diet because he says he likes the way he feels. I am so glad I will not have to put my 5 year old child on drugs that will alter his personality. This is a must read for anyone looking for a way to fix the problem and the long term affects of hyperactivity. Doping your child may be the easy way out but doesn't address the cause. This may not help all cases but it's worth a try.

Dr Feingold's theory is that bad behaviour and/or learning disabilities in otherwise bright children is caused by artifical colors and flavors. Although it may seem too simplistic, it is the answer IF you, as a parent, are willing to alter your lifestyle by reading ingredient labels and preparing food that is normal, natural and healthy. A child cannot do this on their own! But you will save your child's future and maybe your own sanity. A must buy!

Dr. Feingold's book saved my sanity in 1985 through this book! My daughter who was absolutely unable to follow directions, or listen for more than one minute is just the beginning of descibing her challanging behavior before applying this book to her life! She was so hyperactive it meant a day of running around in circles, running up a wall, jumping off of furniture, absolutely "crazy" actions constantly. Our lives with her were sheer he--: trying to go out in public, attend religious events, visit friends/relatives, go to the park or groucery store meant an exhausting, unpleasant experience! I had taken her to a nutrionist, allergist, & psychiatrist to find an anwer and help. No specialist was able to help. I bought this book figuring that we were running out of hope; let's try it. I read this book and began following Dr. Feingold's methods exactly as he writes. Within four days my daughter's behavior changed into a normal functioning small child. My mother came to visit us on the fourth day of the Feingold Diet and was upset thinking that I had heavily medicated my daughter because her behavior was totally normal for a child her age!!!!! I explained what I did: exliminating all foods and starting fresh from scratch and slowly reintroducing foods. My daughter has NEVER been medicated for hyperactivity or any behavior disorder. We only fed her what was well tolerated. THIS BOOK IS A MIRACLE TO OUR LIVES!!!!!!! From 1985 to today has been a wonderful experience with my daughter!!!!!! She has been very successful in school (including college), sports, popular, and a pleasure to be around!!!!! This is the complete truth. I hope that other parents will take the time to get the book for the child who is "uncontrollabe, hyperactive, or unfocused" and follow it! The initial few weeks are difficult but it is worth every ounce of energy utilized!!!!! Please, for your sanity and your child's acceptance get and practice Dr. Feingold's methods to your child's life; it works!!!!

I came across this book a few months ago while researching about hyperactive children. My son is 5 years old and he started showing signs of adhd when he was 3. He has had trouble staying in daycares due to his behavior problems and just recently started school and began seeing even more problems. Tried natural drugs and nothing worked till I read this book and changed his diet like this book says. I can not begin to tell you how much this has changed my son. I only wish I would of come across this a few years ago. If you are thinking about putting your child on prescription medicine then please try this first. I would recommend it to anyone!!

                            Book Description

The first biography to explore the troubled life of one of America's most prolific, and visionary artists.

Few American painters have lived so intimately with nature as Walter Anderson, and few have lived as adventurously as he did, on the edge of society, a voluntary exile from "the sordid thing most people call reality."

Walter Inglis Anderson (1903-1965) is only now finding his place in American painting, partly because he spent much of his life in a small Mississippi town, more intent upon "natural forms" than upon his own place in the annals of painting. Afflicted with mental illness that baffled some of America's leading psychiatrists, alienated for long periods from his wife and children, he led a life of passion and adventure. In pursuit of nature, he rowed frequently to a wilderness island in the Gulf of Mexico; biked and walked thousands of miles across the American landscape; roamed through China during the Maoist revolution; and secluded himself in a cottage where he produced an astonishing abundance of watercolors and drawings, ceramics, wood carvings, and a mural of thanksgiving for the gifts of nature.

Though indifferent to fame, Anderson was acknowledged, after his death, as the South's greatest painter. John Russell of the New York Times spoke of the "quietly excellent power" that makes his watercolors "among the best of their date," and others compared his vision to that of VanGogh and Georgia O'Keeffe.

This compelling, prize-winning biography explores the painting, writing, and uneasy life of a major artist, a fiercely individualistic painter who -despite adversity and hardship- considered himself "Fortune's Favorite Child."

"The makers of great American watercolors -- Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, John Marin, Charles Demuth-- are a select few. Anderson is worthy of inclusion in that company... Here's this Mississippian whose light-struck pictures throb, as do [Van Gogh's], with furious, methodical ecstasy, and are as American as can be. Art poured from Anderson as it does from such unstoppable producers as Red Grooms and Frank Stella. Anderson was a natural."

It is the centennial of the birth of one of America's visionary artists, whose fame continues to expand beyond his Mississippi home. Walter Anderson has never before had a full biography, but now University Press of Mississippi has brought out _Fortune's Favorite Child: The Uneasy Life of Walter Anderson_ by Christopher Maurer. It will be treasured by those who love Anderson's vision shown in his thousands of prints and watercolors, as well as his murals. It is certainly true that Anderson had an uneasy life as detailed here in full, but also an extraordinarily productive one. The biography cannot explain the idiosyncratic genius which inhabits his pictures; nothing can do that. But it does allow us to appreciate the way in which a talented man could triumph over enormous difficulties, not the least of which was a serious mental illness which prevented normal or reliable work habits or relationships with others.

Anderson was born in 1903, in the garden district of New Orleans, one of the big cities he would return to repeatedly, although his sphere of expression was almost always wilderness or rural areas. He was schooled in art in New York and Philadelphia, and during some of the time he was at school, his family set up a fledgling business in Ocean Springs. Shearwater Pottery, set on land acquired by his mother and financed by his father, was a real family endeavor, with his brothers throwing and designing pots, mother decorating them and worrying over aesthetics, and father balancing the books and promoting the business. Once Anderson returned, he took part in the effort, decorating plates and designing figurines. Shearwater was to become a mainstay in his life, and a financial anchor; he never made much money from it, but he didn't need much money for his unconventional way of living, and he was singularly uninterested in profiting from his artwork. He had an unconventional marriage with many separations and general unhappiness. Nonetheless, his wife knew better than others how to appreciate him, even in the beginning: "He isn't just gifted or talented. He really is an artist, a genius," she wrote to one of his psychiatrists. His attacks on others, and upon himself (with cutting and burning), fueled by delusions and paranoia, would land him into one psychiatric ward after another. He took long trips by bicycle all over the country, and even spent time in China to study murals there, always sleeping rough and traveling with no luxuries. His most famous excursions were of course his trips to Horn Island, the eight miles to which he would row with his watercolors and scanty supplies, spending weeks at a time, away from all humans and rejoicing in the neighbor animals he found.

Anderson died of cancer in 1965, during a hospitalization for a lung tumor, a hospitalization he smilingly admitted was the first one of his own volition. Only afterwards did his family start gathering up the huge amount of notes, sketches, and watercolors with which he had been consumed for a lifetime. But even they had no idea what they would find in the padlocked door of a little room that had been added to his cottage at Shearwater Pottery. When they pried open the door, they discovered that all the walls and the ceiling had been crammed with brilliant murals of sunrise, sunset, nighttime, and all the cranes, fish, pelicans, and other creatures that had been subjects of such intense lifetime study. It was just one more instance of his relentless motion to depict and to participate in nature for his own sake, realizing nature through art. The discovery of the room, now part of the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs, is the close of this satisfying, moving, and well-illustrated biography.
