We have OTBP books for many of the states. If you want to experience the unusual, this book is it. Maybe it's a funky place to dine or a place to get to know the locals. There's a great deal to explore Off the Beaten Path.

This book is almost as good as a similar book on "out of the way" Florida places. I was raised in Fla. and have discovered some places that I had never heard of.

Untold history -- with a face.......2003-12-18

Tria Kerkvliet's much-needed account of Hawaii Filipino labor leader, Pablo Manlapit, helps to fill in a large gap in plantation labor history in Hawaii. Other accounts, e.g., Ronald Takaki's Pau Hana, minimize Manlapit's presence, or fail to probe deeply into the nuances of ethnic organizing, as in John Reinecke's otherwise informative, The Filipino Piecemeal Sugar Strike of 1924-1925. Beyond this historical corrective, Unbending Cane also gives us a view of how social activism takes a toll on family stability. This private view of a historical figure is enlightening, if also somewhat unsettling.

This book is essential for anyone interested in the history of Filipinos (or Asian Americans) in Hawaii (and U.S.) and/or the history of labor organizing in America.

Judith Coplon was young and pretty, and possibly a spy for the Soviet Union when she was arrested in 1949 for espionage. Due to FBI bungling, Coplon was arrested twice, indicted twice, tried twice-and set free both times. J. Edgar Hoover never wanted to prosecute her, FBI agents perjured themselves on the stand, and Coplon's lawyer, who specialized in bankruptcy, created a circus out of the courtroom. Utilizing recently declassified material, personal interviews with Coplon's husband and numerous FBI and KGB contacts, and Thomas Mitchell's firsthand account of the case as an FBI agent, the two authors started off on opposite ends-one thinking she was innocent and the other believing she was guilty-before discovering the truth about America's Mata Hari in bobby socks.

Marred by Ms. Mitchell's bias in favor of her subject.......2003-09-12

I gave this book to a Russian-born friend (he jumped from a Soviet ship to live in the West some thirty years ago), because his family name is the same as one of the spies named in the book. He gave them back because the author's bias in favor of Coplon had made him sick. He said: "For me, that woman help to kill my family". That was how I learnt that his grandfather had been the son of a small shopkeeper before the Russian Revolution and so, a member of an "enemy" class, and that was enough for him, his wife and several other relatives to perish in the Gulag, at the time when Judith Coplon was helping the regime who did it. I think he has a point. Just like Hitler's genocide was possible because "ordinary" germans were willing to perpetrate it, Stalin could kill more than thirty million people because "ordinary" Russians, and Americans like Judith Coplon, and other nationals were willing to ignore, condone or aprove it.

Marcia Mitchell cannot ignore the evidence that probes Coplon's guilt beyond any reasonable doubt, so she tells us that she was a spy, but she never tells us that she was a traitor to her country or that she was helping the murderous regime of Stalin. Her sympathy for Coplon makes her draw each nice aspect of her with the rosiest colours, to make her look like the sweet, innocent victim she pretend to be at the time of her trial, and she goes ever farther. It is laughable when she claims that Coplon was severely punished because she could not leave on holidays with her family for many years. I think that even if the FBI was not a saint, there was a failure of justice because she was not punished for her crime.

The book leaves you with a feeling that you want to learn more about the human side of the case, but you feel that it is always cut short when something may not be favourable to Coplon. For example: was her husband really so naive (if you can call him that way) to believe in her innocence for fifty years?, what does he says now that all the evidence has come to light?, does he still denies his wife actions like others deny the Holocaust?

As a man who lived through the generation myself; i found this book a disgrace to our times. Judith Coplon was innocent and prejudiced against because of her religion and gender. The book is severly baised. Judith Coplon was as guilty as the moon is made of cheese.

The Spy Who Seduced America.......2003-08-09

This is a great book, true, well written, and at times hilarious. It completes the story of Judith Coplon, a story which had many of us guessing, and which was subject to political slanting by both liberals and conservatives. And, strangely, although the liberals were more graceful, it turns out that conservatives were right. The book illustrates the tragedy brought to an innocent and lovely family by the criminal actions of a brilliant and idealistic daughter. There are several interesting discussion possibilities that the book brings to the fore.

Who Was the Real Judith Coplon?.......2002-10-04

The fascinating and true case of Judith Coplon, who was arrested and charged with spying for the Russians against the US right after World War II, is a story which continued to unfold over a long period of time. For 18 years, the case was on hold, then dropped by Ramsey Clark, but interesting revelations have come forth quite recently. The Mitchells have done a masterful job of detailing this saga of love and betrayal, of guilt and innocence--some of the facts of this case still have powerful implications for today. This dramatic tale would make a wonderful film.

While the box covers the basics of a table saw, I was expecting a broader section on the design of jigs for use with a table saw. The jigs provided, however, are the basic ones commonly used.

Ups and Downs.......2007-06-19

After reading all of the positive reviews, I was a bit disappointed after securing my copy of Mehler's Table Saw Book. Maybe my expectations were a little high, but I was left wanting more. I was hoping for something similar to Hylton's Woodworking with the Router.

The first two chapters (Introduction to and Buying a Table Saw) can be completely skipped by anybody who already owns or is familiar with a table saw. I felt Mehler spent WAY too much time touting European saws. These pages would've been much more useful on topics more relevant to most of us. I also wasn't particularly impressed with the Crosscutting chapter.

On the bright side, the book does contain some valuable information. The chapter on Safety is excellent. Mehler also consists of some good tips on maintaining your table saw. I liked the chapter on cutting various joints. Lastly, the book includes very good color photos and black-and-white diagrams.

Pros: Cheap, good newbie information, alignment and maintenance tips
Cons: Too much pre-buying info, infatuation with Euro saws

Recommendation: If new to table saws, this book is great. However, for experienced woodworkers, I'd look elsewhere.

Getting Started...........2006-11-26

The Table Saw Book was a great book to read as I began to get into doing some basic woodworking. It was extremely clear and an easy read. However, I found the information very good and on a level that I could understand. I would recommend to anyone who is just getting started in woodworking to read this book first. You will find that you refer back to it time and again.

This book is simply excellent. I can't say enough about it. The one slight negative thing I could say is that the last chapter does not read as well as the rest of the book. Reading the last chapter you almost get the impression that it is written by a different person or that they felt they were rushed and didn't do as good as the rest of the book.

Overall though I just cannot believe how this book reads so well, easy, straight forward, no nonsense. I wish more books were like this.

As a middle school teacher who deals with 11yr olds all day I thought this was a great book. Very light reading, quick and easy but full of good stuff. Linda is "right on" when describing the Tween and gives lots of insightful, useful tips. I highly recommend this for both parents and anyone working with this age group - especially if you are "new" to this age group.

I guess I expected too much from this book. I couldn't get past the first 30 pages without feeling it was written for Jr. High Family and Health class. Think of it as the "light" version of parenting advice. If that's what you're looking for, here's your book. Examples (with a dose of sarcasm:)

Finally a book that touches on the questions parents of "tweenagers" struggle with daily and offers workable solutions to the problems of homework, sex, drugs, moodiness, peers, etc. Dr. Sonna knows her stuff and shares it in a highly readable and understandable way.

Kids are trying to grow up too fast, acting like teenagers when they're still in elementary school. This book has lots of good advice for keeping kids on a good track at school, and at home, along with tips for sleeping,safety, keeping them off of junk food, and "everything" else. This book takes as it's premise that you can beat the market. Efficient Market proponents will find it hilarious.

This book is worth it's purchase price for a detailed analysis of variations on the Dogs of the Dow strategy.

The section on growth investing is to the best of my knowledge complete hogwash, data mining at it's worst. But the DOD part I think provides some reasonable investment ideas.

I had to skip the first few chapters 'cause he kept talking about his personal life and blah blah. I finally get through that and it starts off w/ Kindergarten level investing. I read through a few more chapters and then I had to let it go. Not for me but not necessarily a bad book.

If you're like me and don't have time to pore over the Wall Street Journal every morning or stay online 10 hours a day watching the stock trends, this book is for you. It gives a simple, easy to follow, and "unemotional" system for picking top performing stocks. If the market is doing well, you will too. If it isn't, he describes when to get out. I made money with this system at a time when many of my friends were losing money on their stock "hunches."

Motley Fool rip-off.......2002-03-22

If you have any of the Motley Fools investment books, then this book is a waste of time and money. Robert Sheard, a former Motley fool employee, basically just takes the Motley Fools investment systems and puts a new cover on it, and sells it as a new book. He even re-uses the same jokes. Don't waste your money.

The hard informational content of this book could be presented on a single sheet of 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper. Then again, I'd be delighted to pay [money] for it if it showed me how to pick stocks with a 40% annual return. I don't know about you but I have hard time remaining unemotional when promised a 40% return!

Of course, the real question is: does it work? Well, I haven't risked any of my money trying it out. (Do you think I'm nuts?) But even the author admits his theory is based on only 10 years of data. Whoa! I'll be getting off the bus right here, thanks...

(For what it's worth, the author seems like a nice guy who really believes in his baby, so I take no joy in one-starring his book. I hope he gets his 40%.)

Fronting for companies like Nestle, McDonald's and Bayer is never easy. From the baby formula scandal that Nestle faced for giving away formula to mothers with no clean water sources, to Bayer with problematic pesticide and pharmaceutical products, to McDonald's building thier customer base from preschool on, Al Golin has mastered the art of building unearned public trust in companies that may or may not have earned it. This book could not come at a more appropriate time. In today's business environment corporations and marketers seemed to have lost perspective on the one key element that keeps them connected to stakeholders - trust. You hear a lot about "corporate reputation management" and "truthful marketing", but trust is the real bottom-line. Mr. Golin's book clearly outlines key, easy actions that any brand or corporation can incorporate.
